Morning to All,
Put on a fresh pot and washed out all of the grime and grounds at the bottom of the pot. Been super busy at work. Monday was interviews for Building Supervisor. Hope they get someone hired this week. We have to do background checks, reference checks, etc. before we hire. It is a pain but in today's society it is a must. Yesterday I ran around like crazy to two meetings, one in Hagerstown, MD in the PM. Did not get home until late. Got to get going. I'll check in and catch up on all of the posts later.
Take care,
Mitch

Seems the pot needs cleaning all too often.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a cold 24 degrees. Sun is coming up. Clear skies. Going up to 50, today with some sunshine.
Today, I am driving up to Cambridge, for groceries.. Yuk job. Gas prices are staying at $3.09 a gallon. Gas companies must be happy. Food prices have come down. I wonder why ?
No time for trains today. Wish there was. Maybe tomorrow.
Dining Car has arrived and is serving breakfast. Later.
Y'all have a great Wednesday.

Got home late last night to a cold house. Furnace wouldn't stay running. I'm new to furnaces, but starting to learn about them now, that's for sure. The control board has a LED that blinks based on conditions. My 7 year old trane starts the flume fan like normal, the igniter starts to glow, the gas valve opens and all 4 burners light, and then the big house fan starts to blow. So all parts work. The vacuum switch reads 24-28 volts when all of this runs, but randomly, the voltage will drop at that switch, killing power and restarting the sequence all over again. I can't tell if its the flume fan that is stopping first, cutting vacuum to the hose that goes to the vaccum switch, shutting everything down OR if the vacuum swich is failing regardless of a constant vacuum, causing the fan to stop. Maybe I need to hardwire the flume fan to always run, and see what the switch does.
I got it to run all last night though. It went from only running a couple of seconds, to a half an hour, to all night. I took time to clean everything out really well (this was in my woodshop, so you can guess how dirty it was). It's hard to replace a piece that hasn't hard failed...
Anyone have any ideas?
Good morning all,
IIABSDISEI with temps in the 50s today. Helio! Helio!! Helio!!! Wow, I can not believe he actually won "Dancing with the Stars"! I was relieved when Marie was voted off, but I thought Mel B. would win for sure. When he gives up the racing career, he could be a professional dancer. I was not going to stay up to watch (and I probably should not have and I am definitely paying for it today), but it was worth watching. I did get one task done on the layout last night and I set a personal best for a 15 minute jog at the YMCA (in addition to the weight routine). Tmcc man, prayers and thoughts are being sent to your family. Mitch, thanks for cleaning out the coffee pot. I had the usual fare for breakfast this morning, but bran muffins were being made when I left and I will have some tomorrow. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

Mornin' boys. Mornin' grumpy old men. Sunny and 36 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Wish I was experiencing anjdevil's balmy temps. Still dealing with a stiff and sore lower neck area, and the cold ain't helping.
Wes - If you're in an older house, a service contract would be a good idea. I know my yearly policy has paid for itself 10 fold in the past dozen years.
mitchie - Any good train displays this month up in G'burg?
tmcc - Best regards to you and your family. That also goes out to everyone else with friends/family in need.
Good Morning All,
sunny and 20 going to 40. week end going down hill temp wise. Chief; were you trying to make instant grits? that Might explain the bad smell. Well off to Lowes and Kroger got to get bath. faucet it just needs a new cartridge but I can't get the nut off. turned so hard the nut began to squish. I have lots of tools but nothing seems to fit this thing. Then off to K. to get milk for the gr.kids and ice cream for me and Brutus. I have started my search for a F3 power truck calling on people who my be able to help. Regards,,,,,,,Sir James
sir james I wrote:Wes, clean the flame senser. looks like a little metal rod. fine sand paper and then wipe clean.
I had the flame sensor out yesterday just looking at it. It is in front of the left most gas tunnel. It didn't look new, but didn't look bad either. I will clean it up just in case. I guess it could have build up on it. It's cycling normally now, or course. It has run well since 2 am. Since all I really did was clean up everything well, I didn't really fix anything. Although last week there was enough sawdust on the burners to keep 3 of the 4 from firing until I blew them off with an air compressor. I sure am glad that the shop is gone.
Thanks,Wes

I have an RUUD furnace that did the same things. It would go into pre-stage (fan runs to purge the air), try to ignight, (igniterglows red), and it would shut down.
It has a flame sensor that periodically needs cleaning/replacing. It is a 12 ga (about) 'L' shaped silver wire with a ceramic coated base, that extends into the area where the gas gets ignighted. You can clean this with steel wool. You can also try replacing it. ($10 part).
Good luck,
Edit: Sorry Sir James, I didn't see your post...I concure!
'Morning from a cold and grey Chicago where I am feeling better even though I have a day full of meetings. Wes, do you have a programmable thermostat- if so, try swapping the batteries. That's what was causing my brothers furnace to go haywire last evening. I spent an enjoyable hour last evening after all my after-work meetings watching old train home movies in color on YouTube - boy, I sure wish I was able to ride some of them in their heyday.Have any of you good memories of a train ride? Long ago or more recently?Apart from my commute into Chicago - I've now travelled ... let's see 92 miles round trip, 200 days a year, 18 years ... 331,221 miles - ha!, and a few trips into NYC and Boston on Penn Central in my yout', I've not had the pre-Amtrak experience. Hmm, forgot to add my CTA rides - 22 miles, twice a month, carry the one...

Chief - You still haven't explained to me the need for Southerners to serve Mac and Cheese on Thanksgiving. I have asked several Northerners and all them start laughing.
TMCC - Sorry to hear about your Grandmother.
Doug - Those home movies on UTube are great!! I hope more are added.
Chuck - Road trip?

Buckeye, That youtube link was awesome. Did you happen to notice, guess it was maybe 2/3's or 3/4 thru it, what appeared to be an EM-1 with a coal drag ? Just seeing all those F series with what appeared to be quite new paint, some of those shots must have been of relatively new equipment. I never saw anything on the division where I worked that looked anywhere near that nice in the mid 60's.
Thanks

Doug - The station with the tower is the Mount Royal Station in Baltimore, where I as a kid arrived to see my grandparents. Notice the depressed parking lot and the train shed. That big E unit diesel is what I remember as a kid. Is the green steamer in the movie the George Washington? I thought it was a Southern, but look at the name on the tender.
Fifedog - You need to take a look at this video because much of it might be the places that you photograph. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyoOTgqM76Q
fifedog and et. al. - I guess we now know why we should be recording our trains on video and digital because fifty years from now they might be saying, WOW!
This one has something for everyone, including our fans of the Erie and UP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnrHMCyRUQY&feature=user
Notice the stainless steel behind the steamer.

Never heard of that. I think there are a lot of Yankees living in the Asheville area [we call 'em Carpetbaggers] and must have come from them. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, ham, greens, butterbeans, cranberry sause and mashed potatoes [added due to SIL and his family]. My family always had eastern NC pork bar-be-que and slaw for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. No Mac and Cheese. Now I have learned some yoyo's [way up Nawth] eat Chinese for New Years.

Asheville was a nice town, but a little too poor for most Northern tastes. We are more used to rich cities, such as Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo and Gary. I only saw one house in Asheville that I would consider living in, if I had to live in the South.
BTW, you are again wrong about the Chinese for New Years. No one eats Chinese for New Years, we eat it on Christmas Eve. Watch the movie again!!!
