About time you got that portal done.  Had one done some time ago.  Those crazy big holes in the wall are not good. Wink [;)]  Hey, where are my decals?  Can't get a thing out of that New England Yank. Laugh [(-D]  Good to have a good friend like Jim.

Long day for me.  Buddy is coming to fish this AM.  Then get ready for long flight to Bosie.  Mountain Time there and arriving at 10:45 PM.  That is 12:45 AM my time. Shock [:O]  Another hour to get to hotel room.  Ambien CR and Do Not Disturb sign on the door.  Better get moving and down another cup of coffee before buddy get here.

Have a great day.

Good morning from New England!

70 degrees yesterday. 60 today. Expecting a foot of snow tomorrow! Winter's last gasp? I sure hope so!

Look ma, I'm fixing my own trains!! Well as the Chief reported last night, I took my Polar Express Berk apart and  replaced the old smoke unit "stuff" with pink fiberglass insulation. I also removed the wicking sleeve from the heating element. It was completely black and crispy. I was hoping for an improvement, but what I got was way beyond my expectations! The locomotive literally smoked up the entire room! I was concerned that the smoke alarm would go off! I need to shoot some video of that!  This was a 15-20 minute project that payed huge dividends.

The Chief is the one responsible for showing me how to work on trains. He sat with me one night and helped me get a derelict old post war steamer back up and running. It reminds me of that old proverb - give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. Sincere thanks, Frank!

Making a tunnel portal tonight for someone we all know and love. I'm loving all these little projects. Keeps the hobby interesting.

Have a nice day, all!

Bill, That sounds like a pretty close call !  Glad noone was hurt.

CSXT - Good Luck with the interview !

Dennis - You would be proud of us.  Chris and I had a consoltation regarding the degree of amputation that would be required for our guests, who have ventured out on our UP excursion.  As it turned out we did not have to amputate the femur, just the feet.  So were on the way.  (We are adding  ramps to the passenger loading areas so as to be in compliance and provide assistance for our passengers.)  And there were only 8 passengers that had to go thru this ordeal.  Unbelievably they were all lined up waiting, fortunately the recovery time was immediate, and they were the first ones to board the train.  Seems like a small benefit, given the price they had to pay for riding in the Observation Deck.  Unfortunatly the only antsthisia that was available was some JD and Coke.  (Chris had the Coke, I had the JD to help steady the Dremel tool - We didn't have a scaple.)

Surprisingly enough the other passengers don't realize the fantastic deal they got.  A lifetime pass on our UP, (Just like the RR employees used to have.)  It seems that someone had spilt a considerable amount of Super Glue in the seats. One poor lad didn't realize the dasterdly deed that had been performed, and had sat down on the toilet in one of the suites, and HE left the door open.  And, he is visable from the platform.  For now we are not going to take any action to address the situation, but wait and see if any complaints materialize.

great CSXect hope it works out for you .

not much happening my co worker today told me he didn't think I could move that quick when a tree came loose from the excavator and rolled towards me as I was cutting it. (let go of chain saw and jump back quick lol) chain saw was still running and in the tree when it was done tree rolled only about 3 feet but still enough to do damage if I didn't move quick. (Guess who was at controls of excavator Question [?] not the person with chain saw in hand Oops [oops])

Evening all.  Another busy day.  Shade cloth on greenhouse, watered greenhouse, repotted big tomato plants [got to get reeds from pond tomorrow AM to stake them up so tall], ate lunch with oldest [in Raleigh], got pete moss and special soil [from Lowes], fixed wife's raised [outlined with big skinny chunks of old monument] herb bed, grilled burgers before wife got home, washed wife's car and my truck.  US Airways has a new screwed up system.  Took two phone calls to get boarding passes printed.  Sounds like CTT's new system when we went to that.  Bugs everywhere. Wink [;)]  Jimbo Apitz called my cell while I was washing truck.  "Peeing" in his pants. Laugh [(-D]  He had reworked the Polar Express smoke unit [like several of us have done] and it smoked him out of the train room. Laugh [(-D]  Got early fishing trip to pond tomorrow AM with buddy [that can not saw trees] and then off to airport for long flight to Bosie.  Long day tomorrow.  Even longer next Monday flying back [got big seats for that one].

Microwave popcorn time.

Got my new cable modem this afternoon at the Charter office up the street.  Also picked up a booklet on their DVR system.  Hooked up the modem - no internet.  Messed around for awhile, then called - uh, didn't I know theyhave to update my MAC in their database?  Oh, but I need to wait and call back in an hour, 'cause their computer is updating itself or something.  Talked with the kids and ran up and got the DVR box (swapped for the old cable box).  After make up some substitute curse words and breathing a pound of dust, I got it all hooked up and working - just waiting for the tv guide to update - and I'm back online.  Time to put the kids to bed, so ttfn.  PS - I had a sliderule when I was a kid, but they came out with cheap calculators pretty soon thereafter and we all jumped on that wagon.  I think my dad still has one.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

John- I still have my sliderule around, it was a good conversation piece on my bookcase when I was still working as an engineer.  Last time I tried I could still multiply and divide but it's difficult to see the lines anymore.

How are you removing the acoustic ceiling stuff if you are talking about the spray-on vermiculite junk that was used in the late 70's? Luckily I have just one ceiling with it. A buddy of mine used an old hand pump fly/bug sprayer (who remembers those, eh?) with water in it to loosen it up and then he scrapped it off. Pretty messy no matter witch way you go.

Yep, nothing new one super BIG mess, but it is easy as long as you keep the stuff wet.  Got some painters plastic, 400' x 12'  for around $15 I think, just spread that on the floor and jump in.  Then roll it all up and to the trash.  At least it isn't asbestos.  Back to work no time for partys, ugh

Buckeye, Are you one of the few still around that can still use a slide rule?  Last time I looked at mine I found the old eyes had trouble with seeing the fine lines.

Don, what do you use to get the wallpaper off the walls (anticipating the bride asking me to do this in a few weeks)

Doug, Already got a lot of good advice.  Not too much different from what I've been doing found these things out in the process...  (My first time at this...)

1. If the wallpaper is washable, then typically two layers.  If your carefull you can pull the top layer off.  I was able to do entire strips that way, working it from a corner then rolling it in my hands and pulling evenly.

2. Pick up a wallpaper "scorer", it fits well in the palm of your hand and has two rolls of teeth, run it over the adhesive layer that is left.  Vertically, horizontally, or figure 8's.  (Idea is to let the water spray penetrate to the glue.)

3. I first used a steamer, and it was ok, but didn't seem to provide any real big advantage.  I then used a garden sprayer, and well saturated two or three strips.  You can also get a wall paper scraper that fits in your palm.  I have found this to be a lot better than the putty knife.  I have a tendancy with the knife to lean one way or the other creating a gouge.  With the wall paper scraper I was able to apply direct pressure, and could remove a 4" x 12 or 18" long strip at a time.

Have fun, just finsihed all our wall paper removal, now just two accoustic ceilings to pull down.  Then texture and paint.

Gee, its taken me 22 years to get around to this, maybe the incentive of the train room had something to do with the current motivation ??

Laz,

Good to see you were paying attention and clearly demonstrating the "KNACK!"

You get an "A" today, an "A+" if you remembered to celebrate at 1.59 EDT.

If you missed it, 1:59 CDT is in just a few minutes.

I would stay and chat but the dancing girls are about ready to jump out of the PI....3 - 2 - 1 -PI!

Afternoon all,

Thank you for the kind words about my dog.  Sue the Golden Retriever made it through the night, acting better and is eating.  I though for sure we'd be going to the vet to put her down this morning.  Who knows, she does not appear to be suffering so I will wait.  Here is a picture from earlier this winter

I spent the yesterday in the yard watching petting Sue and doing much needed yard work.  Today I was at church working on a circulating pump for the heating system.  Got it apart, trashed inpeller, coupler, and seals.  Parts on order ~$100, sure beats a replacement at ~$450.

I've removed a bunch of wallpaper even to old stuff with horse glue, and warm water with some vinegar in a spray bottle, and a paper tiger to abraide the surface works fantastic.  I won't go so far as to say it's fun, but it does work good.

I may go training before I study, like Stephen Covey says, first things firstWhistling [:-^]

Doug,

I've always used plain old hot water in a spray bottle with excellent results. Even with vinyl wall coverings. I peel off the top layer, (which is very easy)  then spray the walls with the hot water. The paper comes right off with a putty knife! Try it, you'll like it . . .

Mornin' boys.  88 is posting some rather nice things today.  Since it was our first meeting, I was on my best behavior.  He brought some nice engines with him to stretch out.  I was surprised how much tech MTH puts in their RUGGED RAILS products (nice detail, lots of cab-chat,bi-directional lighting).  Brent's Lionel 0-8-0 C&O steamer was a gorgeous model, I just didn't have the TMCC to make it sing.  The star of the show was the 681.  Really ate up my steep grades with train in tow.  All-in-all a good time.

ATSJer - love them boots.

Wow, those times are never easy for anyone.  It sounds as if people are really hurting because of the events in the chuch.  I've been in a couple of very difficult situations in churches and they really do tend to tear at your very core, simply because you care so much.

And yeah, working in the "marketplace" is easier for me simply because I go in expecting things to happen, and rarely do I allow myself to "trust" non-church employers in the same way that I do church employers.  That being said, I'd never change a thing.  My prayers are with you and yours.
