Mornin' boys. I gotta cut my grass before the rain...starting to look like little house on the prairie around here.
mitchelr - Okay, I figured out your break-stops to and from WVA. Heading west, stop off at the PARK-N-DINE in Hancock. Then jump across the river on 522 and see what's up in the CSX yard (turn left before you get across bridge).
Probably need gas and a carwash, so jump off of 68 in Cumberland and head west on 40 to the edge of town and you can fill-er-up at the Narrows...
Heading east for home you can stop off at Oakland, lots of restaurants and the beautifully restored B&O station.
Then your choice of Martinsburg or Hagerstown CRACKER BARRELL, which are both conveniently located around the corner from rail.
Only too glad to help.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a sunny 56 degrees. Going up to 78 today with sunshine. A little cooler.
Today, we have some company coming around noon. I will do some work on our car and then relax the rest of the day. Dug up the garden area and will put in the plants next week. Ground is getting dry and hard. A night rain wouldn't hurt.
All Aboard for the Dining Car. Time for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Saturday.
Chuck
Morning All,
Just a quick note this AM. I'll be heading to cut grass and run errands before we leave for WVU and the big graduation.
Yesterday was a bit calmer at school. Not nearly as many discipline issues and problems although they did deliver 13 pallets of furniture, etc. We had to have our operations folks pick it up and take it to the warehouse until our construction is finished. Still not sure who screwed up and had stuff delivered before we were ready. I know it it wasn't me or my staff.
I'll check back in on Monday.
Take care,
Mitch

Yum, love Bar-B-Q, Laz. Have another beer for me, my cupboard is bare. We ate at Fudruckers and had a shake, which was great. Went to pick up daughter's dress for my sister's wedding in August. They wanted us to pick up all the dresses for my brother's daughters as well, but we aren't paying for his too!!! Then to Best Buy, where my lovely wife picked out a new digital camera for her trips in June. First for a family reunion for a week and then she is going TDY to Washington and will be allowed a few hours each day for sightseeing, maybe... Of course, they didn' have the camera in the color case she wanted, so we came home and ordered it, free shipping and should show up next week. BTW, her lab work all came back and her heart and kidneys are good and no clots on doppler ultrasound, no congestive heart failure, BP okay, thyroid okay.... Dunno what it is. So, they are putting her on a water pill (diuretic) and potassium to protect her heart from the water pill. Hope it works fast.
John Baker - sad to say, but I smoked cigarettes for a couple years. I don't know what I was thinking. I only smoked when I was drinking, so, in those days, daily between the hours of 5 and o'sleep, except on weekends, when I started a little earlier! Then I met my wife and quit. Since I quit, I can't stand the smell of it. For one thing, it makes the beer taste wrong!
Miss Lisa, if I forget, just want to say Happy Mothers' Day, and same to any others on the pot and those wives and mothers of all you guys, too. God bless you all.
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
HI GIZ,

All is good with the world.

Evening all!
Back from hiatus and it seems not a minute too soon. Looks like another fun weekend defending the mighty bowtie from the dreaded F word. Help me out here, Kieth!
Happy belated Birthday, Chuck!....and many, many more!
Ran the trains for a few minutes this afternoon...just to make sure I hadn't forgotten how to use TMCC in the past 3 weeks. Much like riding a bicycle I'd say. No collisions too so I'm getting better! Discovered a nasty electrical continuity problem in one Altas switch though. I wonder if pumping 18V constant through them accelerates the failure rate? It certainly isn't an uncommon Atlas problem but this is the first I've encountered in 2 years. Luckily nothing is ballasted down in these areas yet.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Sure glad mine are grown and gone. Youngest gets mad when Mom calls and asks if Carter has eaten. We accuse her of starving the kid. He is skinny but is growing taller [like his Dad]. At first she was feeding him only a few ozs because the Dr. said so. We told her to feed him all he wanted. "But the Dr. said so." She is learning.
Planted some squash plants after dark tonight [can see by equipment/tractor/boat shed lights]. Suppose to have big chance of T Showers. Sky is clear!!!!!!
Good night all. Hope all have a great weekend. [Dennis, wife is going to Youngest's Wed morning and not coming back until Sunday. will get some train stuff done then. Always works.]

Ah Doug buddy...I also have a handle on the car thing here. We obtained a decent 2003 Taurus for our daughter. Her best friend immeidately dubbed it the "loser cruiser". I like it! We figured body panels for it would be very cheap!
Sir James - when I traveled to France regularly on business just a few years back (ugh 8 trips in one year) - 1 US$ bought you 1.3 euros. Now it is reversed (1 US$ buys you 0.74 euros - ow!) - so going to France is very expensive now.

Oh Boy! the Ford Chevy fight! At least we are not arguing over Lionel and, what was that other company? Just kidding. WE have to take it all in stride.
Actually got some wiring done on the layout. My 4yo kept asking, "Daddy, when are we going to work on the layout?", so off we went. I am on call and while the wife and kids are in Alabama at the MIL's, should there be no cases, I will be getting some wiring done this weekend.
Please pass along Happy Mother's Day to the wives and certainly to Mrs. Lisa.

Fife has really driven a course. As long as it is within Maryland, PA, VA or DC. That is as far he has ever gotten away from home. Can't go any farther as he does not have a passport [he thinks all other states are foreign countries ]
Well, MIL and family coming tomorrow for a cook out. Our Mother's Day celebration for Pam's family. Off down east on Sunday to my Mom's.
Later.

$3.5K for a week! When I first met my Wife we took a trip to the South of France. Now I watched to many Bond films and Persuaders re-runs as a kid(Well there was only 3 TV channels here then, thats my excuse LOL). I always wanted to go to Monaco, Nice and Cannes. I had got my dream car about a year before (81'DeLorean) and decided to take the DMC for a "spin down to monte". We went Motorail (your car is put on the train )from Calais to Avaigon (Hamper from Harrods as there is no dining car on the overnight sleeper service). We drove to Nice and stayed 4 days in a lovely hotel in Villefranche Sur Mer we had dinner at the cafe that got trashed in the film Ronin. Had lunch at Louis XV at the Hotel de Paris in Monaco. Got to drive the D on the same route as the F1 cars take. Checked out the casino. Then went to Cannes and stayed at the Radisson SAS for 5 days. Went to the Carlton for dinner on the balcony and had the valet guys fighting over the DMC's keys! Cruised the promanade des anglais etc. etc.
That whole trip cost less than $2.5K
How about a 86' or 87' Fiero GT Doug? Now thats a cool car, well it is if you drive it here in the UK not sure what the 'creds like in the States hopefuly not the same as 86' Ford Capri.....

Lisa, enjoyed the story, but hoping the news about your eyes is incorrect. I would make arrangements to see a specialist at one of the main centers up that way. Thanks for your concern. The fires are a little east of here. We have sent down lots of men and equipment. The storm off the coast is causing lots of issues.
Roy, glad you made it back. I have a 2yo daughter, so in about 14 years, I have a lot to look forward to? I am hoping to be retired by then.
Good Afternoon....
Just taking a break from working in the yard.
Tom..Nope...no new trains for my Birthday. I'll have to wait for Christmas.
Lisa...I guess Jim deleted the story. It was a good one. I hope your eyes get better.
OK....back to work.
Morning all!
Back from Wash DC and doing my part to keep Democracy alive!
Chuck - a belated to you! Apparently I missed the festivities and the short lived life story posting? The good news is you are long lived!
Lucked out and got a big chair for the trip home from DC last night. That is very rare. The flight before me, the line for First Class, Executive Platnum, and Platnum passengers was nearly half the plane! All the flights were full, so how I got the upgrade is beyond me. If you can't be born rich at least be born lucky (at least every once in a while - huh?).
Takin it easy today.
Lisa - Neat story - thanks for sharing!. My wife and I have the same eye condition caused by a 13 yr old son and a 15 (soon to be 16) yr old daughter! Oh the drama!
My wife picked her up from school yesterday and she was outside the building crying. She was crying so much in class her teacher excused her. The "boyfriend" again. Oh the drama (did I say that already?).
Have a great day all!
Lisa,That was a heck of a story! Good read! Glad you haven't given up hope for us and abandoned us! Sorry to hear about your eyes! I hope there is something they can do for you!?!
CHUCK - Belated wishes. Somehow, I missed Jim's story - did it get deleted??
CHIEF - Beautiful flowers!
Doug M - Hope that package was for you! Have a very
Dennis - been watching the fire news - Hope the weather changes soon!
Don - Terrible news about the fires out your way. As a little aside -and a railroad story concerning a place named AVALON........
In the late 1800's, businessmen in Winston-Salem (home of Wake Forest Univ.) feared that the city was going to be bypassed by the railroad, leaving their town to lanquish. Industrialists such as RJ Reynolds (tobacco) and JW Hanes (textiles) asked another businessman named Col. Fries (pronounced freeze), to find a solution. That solution was building a 122 mile rail link across the mountains to Roanoke, Va. to connect with the N&W. Fries started the venture around 1887 with $41,000 with a final cost of just over $2 million.
Looking for ways to generate more freight for the railroad after it's completion in 1892, Col. Fries built a cotton mill in Mayodan (my hometown) which opened in 1896. He built another mill about 3 mi. up the Mayo river in 1899.
A man named W.C. Ruffin became the superintendent of Mayo Mill. Years before, he had taken his bride to Catalina on their honeymoon and was very taken with the town of Avalon. He suggested the new town that centered around the mill above Mayodan be named AVALON. Unfortunately, the mill burned down on June 15,1911. Col. Fries decided not to rebuild but to add on to the mill in Mayodan. The entire town was moved, house by house, building by building, on log wagons pulled by horses and mules over the next 2 yrs. After the mill burned, the men would walk the three miles of tracks to the mill in Mayodan until they moved. It was always dark when they returned and the wives would watch anxiously for the lanterns to appear as they were afraid the men would be hit by a passing train.
The only thing left of Avalon now is the canal and the old power house. It has been restored and operates today generating electricity that is sold to a major power company.
Lisa
PS - Lisa has been slack - tyring to deal with this eye problem - Drs Drs Drs - they have decided that it is NOT allergies - and have diagnosed me with ocular rosacea.- i.e. seemingly permanent red. swollen watery eyes.
Mornin' guys!Where's Lisa been? Not much going here... called Lionel last night about the 0-8-0 and they are shipping a new Trainsounds board... this better work...Been on the phone with a lot of contractors about work the wife wants done on the new house... I wish we could just MOVE IN!
Morning all, hope everyone is doing well and that you are prepared for Mother's Day. Our fires are spreading, so far the storm off the coast is not giving us the much needed water, but it is giving the firefighters much unwanted wind. Seems Florida is now in the mix and lots of acres ablaze. Don, they are fortunate that Pendleton is close by. That is about the best method for getting the folks out.
The plan this weekend is for me to get some wiring done on the layout. If all goes well, I just need to drop some feeders and make the runs back to home plate. Once that is done, a layer of paint on the pink foam and I can start scenery. Before long, I will be caught up with the Chief.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Morning. Getting ready for noon meeting. Thought you all might be interested in some greenhouse pictures [especially John F].
Got the MTH dummy I made really smoking. Chat later
Good morning from a much, much cooler but sunny Chicago where I think I am getting a trolley for my birthday next week - a big box came from FedEx yesterday... I am looking forward to having lunch today with a fellow who was in my wedding whom I haven't seen much since then - do you have one of those friendships where you just pick up where you left off?
I enjoy every single one of your posts, Jim!
