Good evening all,

Wow. Miss a day, miss a lot.  It was another beautiful sunny day in SE Indiana.  Last night Lucas and I mowed the yard.  We watched "Close to Home" and "Numb3rs".  Got up early this morning and did the trimming outside and swept the house inside.  Did some quick errands and got cleaned to go to "Spamalot", which was very funny and well done.  Stopped at Denny's for dinner.  Watched some Indy qualifying on line and listened to some more on the radio.  The "Evil Empire" (Penske) sat on the pole...again and only Scheckter broke up the Team Red and Team Green monopoly.  Zeke, I hope life gets better for you as you have had it rough.  Doug and Roy, good luck with the teen years.  Thankfully Lucas is 17 and so I am almost done with them.  Lisa-N-NC, that was a good story about Avalon, and I hope your eyes get better.  To those in the Missouri area, I hope the flooding eases soon.  I sent the dining car early to "Points East" this morning, but I had too much to do to post.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

John, LOL, I have a great image in my mind of that Pinto.
Zeke, glad you are still with us. What a nice Chevy. I am sorry for your losses.

The bride wants me to find someplace to print doubles of 232 photos she's chosen - ouch!

Well, crowd is now dispursing. Big Smile [:D]  Wife works to get this dinner done and when her folks get here she just quits and I have to raise my voice to get her back in line.  If not, the meal will never get ready.  She thinks she is a kid and stops and starts playing.  No joke.  Once the meal is served, she seems to get her mind back.  Happens everytime.  Meal turned out a great success.  Rain came [storms went around us on all sides] and I cooked under the garage.  Pork was great.  Hot dogs were too [ate 3].  Strawberry [fresh] shortcake was too.  Lots of sweet ice tea.

Now watching the Tudors on Showtime.

Hope all the Moms have a great Mothers Day.

Later.

We had one h*** of a storm roll through around 4:30 this afternoon.  Rain in sheets blowing horizontal first from one direction than the direct opposit, almost constant lightning, and then, to top it off, hail the size of nickels.  Needless to say I stood at the open door, was at work, listening for a tornado.  When the weather alert radio went off I thought for sure it was a tornado warning but it was only a severe storm alert for a stationary storm cell dirctly over Watkinsville.  When I closed the store at 7 there were still piles of hail laying around.

Guess tomorrow's paper'll show any damage that occured, since UGA graduation was today I'm sure that'll be the headline no matter what.  Goes with living near a college town, nothing matters in the world except the college.

Wouldn't you know it, I was all set to get some honey do's done and then get to some serious work on the layout.  I finished the first set of things and then I get called in for an emergency.  Oh well, now I have to try to get some MD shopping done.  Was going to go to the mall, but it looks like WalMart is my last option.  At least she is still out of town, so I can do some shopping tonight.  Think I will dine out.  I have to hang around to make sure the X-ray looks good on this guy and then I am out of here.

Zeke, that is a nice looking 55.  Take good care of it.  It is good to hear that someone who has been through so much has managed to keep a good outlook  on things.  I learned a long time ago that no matter how much I have had to go through, somewhere, someone has gone through worse.  I think it is that way for all of us.  Just have to keep your chin up and face each day.  Glad you are doing well.  And glad you have become a part of this forum.

Roy and others, if your kids go through a defensive driving course, you should be able to get a discount on your insurance.  They are also great for teaching how to really drive and avoid accidents.

Chief, It is good to see you and Dewey, Lisa, and the rest here.  Hope everyone has a great night and that the women are blessed this Mother's day

Evening guys,

Dewey, I was wondering why they new handle, but you answered before I got to the end of the posts.  Next question, why are you taking down the shelf layout?

Doug M., I laughed when I read your post about the car.  Back quite a few years, when my daughters were teenagers, I bought a Ford Pinto to use the power train in a kit car SS100.  I parked it in the drive way for a while until I tore it apart.  My daughters asked me to park it somewhere else as the kids were making comments about it. Smile [:)]Smile [:)]

Lisa, Happy Mother's day.

Ran trains a while on thursday evening and again yesterday when my new MTH A-5 arrived via UPS.  Neat little engine, with really nice slow speed operation.  Will start at 2 MPH and will keep running at 1 MPH when slowed down from a higher speed.

Spent most of the day today working on the landscaping around the pond, pulling weeds pruning out deadwood and planting some new perannuals.  A couple of things have been given a reprive for a few weeks but if they don't improve, they will be history and replaced by something else.

Take care all,

thanks ...makes me feel good to know i am part of something......

my life changed dramaitcally after i got out of the service....felt like i had no meaning, or purpose. I was all alone. Wife divorced me while i was in iraq, parents died, grandperants died, watched my brother die in iraq, son was killed last june, and i lost most of the use of a leg. Took a round in the chest, had 2 heart attacks since then ( diflibulator installed). but im alive. But i would say id go again in a heart beat if asked.

I love my country, i love being alive, we have so much to be thankfull for. Alot of people take little things for granted ...but being overseas and coming back definatly makes you look at life a whole lot differant.

But everything is going a lot better know. Life looks good. i got a new hobby and i sure have met alot of nice ppl here and just hope to continue that...

all is good in the sunshine state....what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger...i think!

i hope everyone is having a great afternoon!

Dewey, hope you're feeling better - that is an interesting story about the mill and railway.
Roy, a defensive driving course sounds interesting for the daughter. I wonder if Chicagoland Motor Speedway has such a thing.
Chief, I think the Teeter is Harris Teeter, right? I remember visiting those supermarkets on our annual trek to South Carolina. We're having pork on the grill too tonight --
Beautiful day here - ferried the daughter and boyfriend around - then measured some rotted wood I need to replace on the bay window, untangled and recoiled the hoses and cleaned out the kiddie pool; lost to the middle boy in a quick game of basketball; now the bride wants to go over a year's worth of digital photos to print "some" - uh oh. Going back in the basement - maybe I can catch a quick nap to the sound of running trolleys.

My mountain handle only Chief. Everytime I have to re-login up here with this different e-mail adress because "someone under that name is already on"[my Greensboro handle which is simply my name].

Also fast-moving thunder storms here causing the lightning alarm on the golf course to honk often. But only scant rain.

Have a good weekend---sounds like you have a busy schedule.

Afternoon all!

All geared up for the big M day tomorrow. CArds bought and signed. Flowers hidden and staged for deployment.

Made a visit to the Age of Steam museum here in Dallas this morning to discuss setting up the club's portable layout for a kids day event they do here in June. Should be a fun event. We are going to have to look into renting a tent however. Spent a bit of time looking at the equipment. Although bot as large as some RR museums, they have some interesting stuff - Big Boy, DD40X, GG1, SF Doodlebug. Some items paint is suffering, but they rotate the painting to keep up with it. Many pieces have a nice fresh coat - particularly a F3 in SF warbonnet that is magnificent!

The wife's M day present is to go to a local food festival tonight and Chris Daughtry (SP?) of American Idol is singing. She and the daughter wanted to see him real bad. Guess where I stand on that issue Wink [;)]Evil [}:)]Zzz [zzz].

Doug - I always heard Bill Culliton was a really nice guy - that certainly proves it.

Dewey - Hope your recovery goes well!

My wife signed my daughter up for a defensive driving school being held at Texas Motor Speedway tomorrow - so I get to spend the afternoon there. They will practice learning to handle spins, skids, and maneuvers at speed. Should be interesting. Will probably bake in the sun myself - hope they have some shade for this.

80's here today and sunny.

Have a great evening all and a great Mother's Day tomorrow.

Regards, Roy

Afternoon.  Went for haircut and Mother's Day shopping.  Came home to wife, "Drive my to the Teeter."  In the car, "Oh, lets go by Macy's and I need to run in and exchange something."  Went to Macy's, she shopped and then to Belks and she shopped.  Finally back from Teeter.  Now got to fire the grill and cook pork loin.  Refire and cook hot dogs later.  Make a big jug of sweet ice tea.  Screwed up my day.  Then she calls her Mom and moves the event from 6 PM to 4:30.  Going to Mom's tomorrow and now have to rush back as Alison and Carter were coming to spend the night but changed and coming tomorrow only.  Enough with her ~^*# family.  She goes to Alison and Carter's Wednesday morning and not coming back until Sunday.  How long does she have to hold that Grandson?????

I'm ill the rest of the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings Lisa and Happy Mother's Day!

Coming to you from here at Banner Elk in the North Carolina Mountains. Very sorry to hear of your eye problems and hope it doesn't affect doing more of the great scenery work you have pictured here on the Forum for our viewing pleasure.

I am up here at our mountain cottage  recuperating from bone graft surgery all around my upper jawbone---been losing loose teeth like peas from a pod. Since my misery index is already high, I am continuing to disassembleSigh [sigh] my high, 5-track, twin shelf layout [7'-6" & 9' H.]. My old knees and feet already sore from standing on step ladders.

Thanks for the story on the Mill and community of Avalon. The Mayodan/Madison area presents you with some great modeling sites along the N&W Ry. You might recall me saying that after the Civil War my great grandfather bought Judge Settle's place and lived about six miles east from the Mill at Mayodan down hwy 135 and River Road at Mulberry Island farm. In 1912, several years after he and great grandma died, my grandfather and his five sons sold out and loaded their household stuff, farm equipment, livestock [and grandma] on the Atlantic & Yadkin Ry at the Madison Depot for shipment to a smaller 180 acre farm at Summerfield where I grew up as a Depression/WWII farm "mule" [I still believe that having and raising many young'uns was cheaper farm labor than buying mules in those days].

Until the flood took out the Dan River Bridge about 1940, the A&Y Ry handled much tobacco, terra cotta pipe, raw cotton, fabric and brick on the Madison branch, variously both inbound and outbound. It was also the best passenger connection to N & W for central N.C folks traveling to the upper midwest. I visited my maternal grandparents in Ohio "grits country" [Dennison/New Cumberstown] via the N&W to Roanoke/Columbus often during the late '30s early '40s.

I really enjoyed your story of the Mill at Avalon. If my memory serves correctly, Mr. Ruffin and his experience with the Mill at Avalon were written up in the book: "The Men and the Mills".  During the early to mid 20th century some of the Ruffin family men became superintendents at Dan River Mills in Danville and Erwin Mills near Durham. [I actually got on the ferry and visited Avalon on Catalina a couple of times in 1949 while attending Navy Electrical School at San Diego].

Take care and good luck with the eyes!

Best regards,

Dewey

Howdy Y'all!  Well, the wife and kids are off to MIL's and so far, not called in.  I got to watch the program "Trains and Locomotives" on RFD.  Was a great show on the anniversary of the FT.  I am now watching Clint Eastwood in one of the more forgettable roles...Firefox.  It's over now, so time to get to the honey do list.  Plan is work around the house this morning, head to the mall to get Mother's Day gift, and then, tonight it layout work night.

Hope y'all have a great day.  The whole area looks like fog, but is really smoke from all the fires.  Visibility is poor at best.

Good morning from a sunny but cool Crystal Lake where it is 59 and not supposed to push much into the sixties today or tomorrow. I got a plan for Mothers day for the bride - after services, go to breakfast, then home to give her gifts, then out to dinner that night - maybe Benagins. I have 'decreed' it is a stay-at-home-with-Mom-all-day day.

Nick, I always admired the Fieros - they didn't weather well here - even with their plastic bodies - there's not that many around here anymore. Boy, Europe sure is expensive. The bride wants to go there for our twentieth anniversary in a few years - not sure about that -- it'll be right as the daughter enters college. We were fortunate to take a Rick Steves tour of Rome years ago - that sure was fun.

Roy, I have to remember 'loser cruiser' and look for something like that - right now, I can't afford another car - and the bride owns the mini-van with the other young'uns so when she gets her license this fall, I'll make her a deal - if she gets up at dawn to drive me to the train and pick me up at night, she could take the beloved '86 Hyundai Accent without wheel-covers to school - that all assumes she can get a parking pass which I doubt...

Zeke, my first car was a '73 Charger - a great car - that gets greater as the years pass! I remember spending much time with the Mopar parts book and under the hood.

Bill Culliton very kindly sent me a care package of trolley parts to kitbash - so I will hopefully spend some time on that today.

Those Indians are sure playing great. Hopefully my Sox will continue to heat up - the Bulls are sure cooked.
