Jim...The brake light filiment is burned out in your bulb. The running light filiment is working. That's why you see the lights on. Have someone hold the brake pedal down as you look at it. You probably already knew this.

Lee, sorry to hear of your job woes and good luck on the new job search.

Brent, That is the price you pay for driving a BMW, parts are out of this world, cost wise.  Have a friend who is a BMW fanatic, belongs to their owners club & goes to the plant every year. He also buys and restores older ones.  Does a lot of shopping around for parts.

RT, hope the interview works out for you.  BTW, one of my daughters and her family used to live in Severville, just outside of Gatlinburg.

One more thing, got my YORK MEET flyer and sent for my badge.  Don't forget to send for yours if you are going.  September 15 deadline.  Are we going to get together again this fall?  I think the Chief should declare a city holiday and join us there.  Less than two months away October 18-20 & TCA openhouse on the 17th.

Good choice, Don. I can just see the conversation, 'Honey, we're going to celebrate our anniversary this year with an exotic vacation to York, Pennsylvania.'

Cleared up: sunny, hazy and humid now. Just got back from going over to the Art Institute for a noon lecture on arms and armor - they have a neat collection. This sounds so cultural.

Speaking of Fords, we had an old Escort that seemed to have an undiagnosed electrical problem as a 'class'. We got to counting how many Escorts we'd see driving around with blown headlights and taillights. Can't tell you how many I replaced.

Doug,
I thought of that too... Smile [:)] I did go out for lunch today and put some 93 in her, running a bit better, but still not 100%, so stopped at Advance and picked up some Bosch Fusion IR plugs... now if I can just figure out where they go in the engine... probably have to remove the shroud, so that should be fun.  So far it has only cost me $62.00 (minus gas, but that is an every week expense), so we will see.  I'm hearing a knock from the struts as well, so probably get those replaced soon too... I know I'll need brakes well... but I can't see any of this cause the insane vibration/shaking... maybe the plugs and gas as Chuck said... one can only hope.

Finding dyno could be a problem... not familiar with the area...

Good Afternoon -

Finally got the soundboard on.  Chief you didn't say how "itchy" that stuff is.  Took 4 sheets, then had a 3 foot square section, and bought another sheet to finish it up.  So next step is to put a covering on.  I'm going to cheat and use indoor/outdoor carpeting.  I want to get back to operating and this is the fastest way.  Anyway, I will try my hand at landscaping it in the future a section at a time.

I had purchased a pair of AC4000's last December.  Power unit and dummy. (Avatar).  The light kit is optional for the dummy.  The engines arrived in May but no sound kit.  Been talking to the supplier since then, every couple of weeks different story; not available - came in, have to sort out, all mixed up - will take care of it immediately - in the mail - don't have any not available yet.  Finally checked on the MTH website, hmmmm they are available and according to the find it at a number of stores.  So finally found it!  Will be ordereing it from PA.

EVERYTHING is in PA !!

Speaking of which, would go to York, but OUR anniversary.  So can't do that, (York).  Maybe in 2008 or 2009.

Well back to work, hope all have a great day.

Off to the doctor's for my annual physical. That's always fun. At least he's a Three Stooges fan.

Last night I put the final touches on another refinished table and one of my train room stools. I spray painted the stool's legs with Krylon black. The stained the seat with Minwax. Coated all with Minwax Polycryllic. Looks great. One done, 3 to go. Spray painting the stool only took all of 5 minutes!

Chief, are you going to eat that beaver after you shoot it? Enquiring minds want to know!

Afternoon.  Spent all morning doing reports and emailing them.  Takes time to scan documents [receipts], do expense sheet and event report with pictures [to download].  This time it was X 2.  Now watering as none done while I was gone.  Did get .25 inches of rain so that helped save things.  100+ yesterday and already 100+ now.  No work on layout today. Sad [:(]  Maybe late this afternoon.  Got to go to Lowes and get gift certificate for Oldest.  Her birthday is tomorrow.  Doing lunch with her and Frankie.  Need to go to DR. and get her to cut out bad place on left hand [just like the one I had to have removed on right hand] as it has come back and growing fast.  Need to check the pond and stay awhile and shoot beavers.  Later.

Brent....At an idle, there is no load on the engine. It will appear smooth. Under a load, the spark advance will kick in. This may be the problem. Or an old spark plug could be fouling out under a load. The octane of your gas could cause a bad knock. If it should run on higher octane, then your valves will suffer. You say it is an AWD ?? Chances are, it is not your transmission or transfer case to the front wheels. This would have a tendency to vibrate all the time. Same with the differentials. It really sounds like a power problem.

Yeah, now I'm worried that the OSB may have to be replaced due to all the rain!  That will just really... shouldn't have waited to do the roof on Sunday... oh well.

Car is acting up again... replaced the drive shaft and it is doing the exact same thing it was doing before... $1,000.00 for a drive shaft... I'm a bit ticked off... I didn't think it was the drive shaft, just didn't make sense.  The car feels like it is going to shake apart when I accelerate, not while cruising... so you tell me... a drive shaft only vibrates when accelerating?

Banged Head [banghead]

Brent....A drive shaft should NEVER vibrate. They are balanced at the factory. Weights are welded on them. If it still vibrates after a new drive shaft, then it is something else in the drive train. Could even be the engine is missing on acceleration and not in cruising. This even could be the transmission. Good luck.

Chuck

Chuck, that is what I thought.  My point is the car is doing the exact same thing with the new drive shaft that it was doing with old one, so it wasn't the drive shaft and I dished out $1,000.00 for that 'repair'.  I was thinking about the timing.  BMW recommends high octane gas in the car, and I've been running 87, so maybe I should put a tank of high-test through it... also 110,000 miles and still running on original plugs... maybe I should go ahead and replace them as well...

When I gun the engine in park or neutral the car just purrs like a finely tuned kitty cat, so I don't think it is the engine, but could be since it isn't under stress.  I'm leaning toward AWD or tranny... both repairs I hate to think about...

I really want to get this solved because I don't want to trade it in... would like to get 2 or 3 more years out of it...

Good morning everyone,

Ford= Fixed or repaired daily

It's been a rainy week here. No sunshine here at all. My parents ae looking at new houses, and I went with my mom to look yesterday, and they are nice. I ws amazed by how nice they look.

88 - I think your OSB should be okay but let it dry out before you put the roofing on it.  You'll know if I'm wrong, because it will be coming apart or otherwise sagging and look bad after it dries out.  Good luck and watch out for black mold!

Check the motor mounts and transmission mounts.  They are probably rubber in a metal frame.  Look for cracks in the rubber or loose mounts.  The harmonic balancer will also cause vibration on acceleration.  You may want to see about a refund for the trans shaft.

Good luck

Kurt,

A drive shaft should vibrate all the time except maybe when braking, sounds like a lame excuse from the dealership.   If the problem happens on accelaration then it is ignition timing or computer controlled spark issue.   Transmisssion would not happen all the time mainly an occasional knock or bump, however if Ford left out some mounting screws or bracket that could be differant.

$1000.00 for a drive shaft? Hope it was gold plated for that kind of money.  A drive shaft for a front wheel drive only costs about $375.00 installed, price is down here in south Florida a.k.a. rip off city.

Go to an outside mechanic for another opion, don't go to Pep Boys or Firestone as I have had bad experiances with both in the past, as I feel Ford is cleaning out your wallet.

Doug, the F22 is huge and quite remarkable.  I got to sit in one....fantastic!  One of my friends was a chief engineer on the project at Lockheed.  The rear stabilizers are bigger than the delta wings on a Mig 29.  Like I said, it is huge.  I also got to see it in demonstration and got a lot of goodies while on my visit.  I hope that you get to see it soon.

Happy Birthday to Pam and Lisa!!!!  Lisa, Town and Country Hobbies has flatcars for $15.  They also have some with loads for a little more.  They have a web site that also includes some great pewter figures.

Jon, glad to see you stopping in.  Always enjoyed the photos of your layout.  Look forward to the next one.

Chief, hope you get to treat Miss Pam real well today.

Getting ready to head in.  One of the senior guys is celebrating his 50th birthday today, so I will stop and pick up a gift certificate and card.

FIL and his bride are here to watch the kids as regular sitter is on vacation.  This may free some time up so I can actually get to the trains....if SWMBO allows it.

Have a blessed day,

Dennis

Good morning from a grey and foggy Chicago where gasoline prices are the highest in the country, it is expected to rain again later tonight, and I'm still scaring people off with my red 'evil eye.' I don't mind the weather though this must be what it's like to live in Portland.

Roy, the Illinois Railway Museum was flooded in all the wrong places - the webcams look awful. No equipment loss though. It caused them to cancel their Thomas days over the weekend and take just a huge income hit. The Chicago Air and Water show was cancelled on Sunday. The pilots couldn't tell the difference between lake and sky. Rats. I wanted to see the F-22. The anti-radon work a few years back had the unexpected benefit of making the basement super-dry so I'm OK, but I'm not sure how to check the sump now that it is in a sealed pit. I am having a guy come look at the roof tomorrow. It's looking rather beat-up.

Tonight's my late night - last class of the summer. Hope I get a few more students in my fall class. Happy B-Day [bday] to Lisa!!
