Good morning from a sunny and cold Chicago. Supposed to warm up this weekend - hope so. The lawn looks dead. Of course a year's worth of kids running on it will mash it flat. I'd rather have that than a good looking lawn - too bad for the neighbors. Great to hear about Julia. This is our very own water-filled gravel pit our town has been grappling with what to do with it for the past five years - allegedly the cleanest water in this part of the state.

Stock it with fish.  Seed the banks [or turff it].  Put in a dock.  Get boats with trolling motors.  Rent them out.  If there is any shallow water that slopes slightly, make a sand swim beach with picnic shelters.  Yanks! have no vision.

Doug,
Along with what Chief said (bar the comment about our vision), I would take the area in the upper right corner, smooth it out, and put in a baseball and softball field, pavilion, etc... lots to do with a lake and some empty land...

What's wrong with Barney? http://www.barneyfife.com/

Re our town's Vulcan Lakes - named after the gravel company and used to have rail access and a little tank engine on a stele in front of the property; the city got it on a handshake agreement in exchange for letting the company mine their way through a through street that used to run north of the property. It is very deep and full of fish - all posted no fishing unfortunately. They would love to do as everyone suggests (except for power boats) but can't figure out how to pay for it without giving it up to a taxing district or developer. The latest scheme is to work out some sort of minimal access and charge a whopping usage fee. Unfortunately, the handshake didn't include finishing off the area - so the water is eroding all the perimeter which is deep and steep and expensive allegedly to shore up. This was a big deal in yesterday's mayoral election. The saga continues - I pass it every day.

Hey guys, please don't forget about my request for a Divco CTT truck, if you see one, I would like to buy it (if under say $30.00).  If Bob Keller has his, perhaps one of you could draw his attention, while another swipes the truckEvil [}:)] Just kidding, please don't call me for bail, I want one, but on the up and up.  Hope you "Yorkies" have fun and please think about all the rest of us who can neither go to york, nor see photos from there.

Evening all,

Jim, great about Julia.  She will up into a heartbreaker!

Beautiful today, warm sunny and clear.  Cut grass today, third or fourth time.  I am amazed at the difference in the Ohio Weather.  In Southern Ohio we're easily two weeks ahead of the folks in midstate like Buckeye.  I've got blossems on the apple trees and already harvested a couple meals of asperagas.

Hope you guys have a good time at York.  Maybe in a couple of years I can go.  Not much on the train front for the past few days.  Classes start up this weekend and alread have assignmentsSigh [sigh].  I am awaiting the loading platform and operating car I got on ebay.  Seller has shipped so it should be any day.

All tack care and safe travels

Greetings,

Just returned from the tour of MTH and the Tony Lash layout.

Chief, Be sure to check page 118 of the 2007, Volume 2 MTH catalog.  Inside info! Smile [:)]

Jim, Good to see Julia is doing so well.

Doug, You will want to check out the trollies in the new MTH catalog.  Several new ones.

York starts tomorrow.  Will be looking for Dennis's Divco.

Dead Dead [xx(]  Dug larype all day.  Planted it back at the pond.  Put up two treat poles to mark the boat launch and one for tying up.  Went to Transportation meeting.  I even missed lunch.  Wife had home made spaghetti waiting.  Now for some trains.  Did not get garden beds shoveled.  Tomorrow I guess. Disapprove [V]  Had put some of the greenhouse plants under the tractor shed to condition them before planting.  A cucumber plant had drooped.  Looked and it was brused by little squirrel foot prints.  Time to SHOOT squirrels again.

Doug M., we use grants to get our parks done.  Your town should find a state and maybe federal grant or two.

Chief, pretty soon you can teach Carter to take care of the squirrels with you Wink [;)]

Dennis and Dr. John and Buckeye, thanks for the advice, you guys have wisdom.

Got an offsite team meeting today.  Ate at Maggie O'Briens near Union Station - about 1/4 mile walk from the office.  I had the Reuben sandwich and a Dt Pepsi - $12!  It was okay, but I prefer regular Reubens with 1000 Island dressing and this had other stuff on it.  Got some horseradish on the side, not as good as my uncle makes up in Maclean IL, but it helped the sandwich a lot.  No rain, so I got the lawn mowed.  Varmints are sneaking up on me again.  Need to get some mole traps.  I thought about poison, but some neighbors around here have cats that roam outside and I don't want to take innocent pets out.  Thanks for all the great emails guys.  I need ot get on my desktop more often so I can download and forward stuff myself.

OH YEAH!  Hey, I got my new Lionel Halloween car today (preordered): Graves Mortuary Formaldehyde Tank Car!  VERY nice in orange and black.  I sorta wish I had bought more of them.  Don't know if I could sneak it past my wife right now, esp as I'm going to pre-order the Hogwarts Express and then tell her about that -- Sequence is KEY!  I'm learning as I go, boys!  Mischief [:-,]

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Made it to York PA, interesting !  Went on the MTH and Lash tour today.  Hooked up with John Fullerton.  I was quite impressed with MTH's testing activities, EVERY new engine received goes an visual inspection AND functional testing prior to shipment to the dealers.  Surprised !

The repair/warranty area test stations all had a oval track to test engines on as well.  Much better than just applying power and seeing if they ran or not.  (Chief one test station was even working on switches.)  Tour was quite a bit more than I expected, areas included warehouse, receiving inspection, photo lab, resource library, engineering lab, and more.  Served a pretty good lunch as well.  Lost out on door prize for the farthest traveled to some guy from Oceanside Ca.  Grumpy [|(]  Did receive new 2007 vol 2 catalog, some folk may find page 118 interesting.

Didn't realize Tony Lash's layout was in DC, didn't help that bus driver got lost, but a very impressive layout, gave me a couple of ideas for mine.  Maybe I will start with a trestle and build from there.  After all its only a little time.

Need to go and revise my shopping list for tomorrow,

Don

Jim F - About those mole traps - We've had a problem here and I've been using something called "ROZOL".....rat poison pellets -picked it up from our local farm supply store.  Just poke a few holes down into the tunnels and pour a few pellets in then compress the tunnel.  Pets, etc. won't get to it there - just those darn moles or voles too!  Works like a charm!

Good morning all,

It is cloudy, rainy, and cooler in SE Indiana with temps in the 50s today.  Took it easy last night and did some chores around the house.  Did watch "Lost", which was another good episode.  What do you think, Jimtrumpie (sp?) ?  Any of the guys at York see any of the new Tinplate from MTH?  They are usually good about getting the catalogs on the website, but they are slow this time.  I spent most of the day cleaning out files and getting the cubicle ready for the next person.  Last day here is tomorrow, and start the new job on Monday.  It will be different.  The dining car has left for "Points East".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good(?) morning from New England.

Julia continues to improve. Thanks again to all of you for your prayers.

I discovered something I'd like to share with you all. 91% isopropyl alcohol WILL remove the original black paint off of a Lionel post war steamer. And very easily I might add! I stumbled across this little gem of information quite by accident. I was using some to wipe away some acrylic paint I was using to touch up my 2037. Well, it also started removing the original paint!!! As Curly would say, Nyaaaaaa!!

Life is a learning process!

Have a great day!

I am SO envious of you guys going to York.  BUT, now isn't my time.  With a toddler on the prowl and a wife changing jobs and us on the move again--well, you see.  Anyway, all of you at York have a great time and bring back lots of good stories and info for us holding down the fort here online. I rarely post on the coffee pot, but I read it regularly.

I have always wanted to see tony lash's layout.  I lived in the DC metro and could never track his layout down.  I tried finding his business, tracking him down personally, but could never do it.  I guess I'll have to take the tour at York to see his layout.  I heard he spent a fortune on trees alone.  I saw the TM video that showcases his and other MTH layouts.

Travel safely and Godspeed.

Dan

PS You Pittsburgh guys--how about a show and tell tour of some of your layouts this summer? I'm from there and know western PA has tons of good layouts.

Anyone buy/make the reserve on that mammoth layout for sale on ebay based in Pittsburgh?

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a clear, sunny 40 degrees. Going up to 70 today with mostly sunshine. The next 4 days are looking good.

Today, I am taking it easy. May get some company from wife's niece, and her 4 year old son.  I might spend some time outside, working on the winter cleanup.  Looks like I will be cutting grass this weekend. At least, it's better than shoveling snow.  Love the summer.

Well, the Dining Car is here and ready for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Thursday,
