Evening All!

Still disgusting outside! Ugh..... Marty, I wish I would have got my pool up and running this year!

Dennis - So sorry about your dog.

Rich - Great sounding car show location! Hemis and GEVO-12s together. Lots of horsepower! Big Smile

Buckeye - Great checklist. Awesome idea!

Brent - You have a few great vacation ideas. Mine are all late teens, so I know it can be tricky to plan family vacations. We're looking to go California this November. I like it because there's something for everybody there. We'll stay in Anaheim as in the past, and do Disneyland, Hollywood/Warner Bros and the Hop On/Hop Off bus tour throughout greater L.A. San Diego was a nice day trip. We took the Pacific Surfliner from Anaheim to San Diego and did the zoo and Midway. Seeing the old Santa Fe station was a nice bonus for me. Mackinac Island is beautiful, but for my two cents, that is something better suited for you and the Mrs. Niagara Falls is nice, but it can quickly become a tourist trap if you're not careful. Make sure you "bundle" the attractions to save a few bucks. I'll still vote for Cali. I'm sure Don, Dennis, DougDG and Ray can offer further advice.

Have a good one and prayers,

Rob

Good evening all,

Should have stayed home today (will tomorrow) but had a lot to do and got most of it done.  Weather hot.  Junior high team lost to county rivals in first match between them 4-1.  Kids played really well; just got beat.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

First off Dennis so sorry about your pup.  I know what they mean to a lot of people.  Mine has gotten me through some hard times.  They are the best.

Another hot day here.  Schools are doing early dismisals.  Looks like this is the last real pool day of the year looking at the long range forecast.  Pool will most likely be closed a week from Saturday.

Train wise not much brewing.  I'll be at the LHS this weekend again helping out.  It's fun to be on the otherside of the counter and see what were like from that point of view.  LOL

Everybody stay cool and dry.

Brent.... I have been going to Mackinac Island since high school. My daughter worked on the island, too. The history of the straits is fascinating. Of course you need to take a short trip north to the Soo Locks where I have spent a couple of winters working in the cold and wind. Fly to Detroit and then to Pelston,MI. There is a shuttle that takes you to the docks. My grandsons were 4 and 8 last year when we were at the Grand. The 4 year old, now 5, earlier this summer asked his mom when they were going back to Mackinac Island. She was stunned. He was impressed by the horses, the game yard, the hallways, the chess set, ice cream, bike rides, carriage ride, fudge, skipping stones, etc. Of course the boat ride to the island is unique. They really treat the kids to a good time. Buy a kite and fly it off of Mission Point. Of course we drove north from Cbus and stopped to see the 1225 in Owasso, MI.

MartyE....Cbus is also very hot. They cancelled Cbus schools for the day. My wife taught in Cbus for 25 years and never had a day cancelled for heat even though she was in an antique building of red brick. I was like working in an oven. Which LHS are you working?

Fife....I looked up Pergoo on the web. Do you mean "Pergo"? Specifically the Soundblock Foam, 2 mm thick.

Dennis...I have found the L girder benchwork the easiest to build and with the foam on the top, the easiest to drill a hole for accessories, switches, lights, etc. When I do again, I will put the buss wiring all in the front with feeders to the back. For years I couldn't figure out how to strip the tiny 22 ga wires or less for a connection.  I now melt the insulation, solder and shrink wrap. I am going to add a self adjusting wire stripper to inventory of tools. (Suggestions welcome.) When I had to tear the layout apart, the drywall screws were great and I saved all my lumber.

Kevin…Glad you liked the list. Add to the list: a better system of keeping track of the wiring.

Banks…Lake Erie Walleye is good, but Walleye caught in a Canadian lake and then used for shore lunch is the best.  Best salmon is in Alaska. I have the tool storage problem, too. I have been looking at Menards.

Buckeye - Yep, that's the stuff.

This weekend I needed to inject some Great Stuff spray foam into my garage wall.  Then I took it downstairs to the layout, and started filling in the gaps along my river banks.  Didn't turn out bad, and I kinda liked the randomness of how the foam dried.  **Don't wear a good shirt....

Hello there,

crashed last night without posting. Spent yesterday farming and working on dead tree removal. Got hay to bale today.

ChiefEagles

Walleye, you lucky guy, Banks.

Chief SIL was the lucky one. He caught a bunch while vacationing in Erie with family this summer.

Buckeye. .....in nearly 30 years in the field I never found a stripper I liked better than a "T" stripper by Ideal. There are 2 sizes one from 10 to 18 AWG and one  from 14 to 26 Awg. I did a lot of shopping for a tool cabinet. Lowe's HD and Harbor Freight didn't come close to the on sale price I paid.

Best get on with the day.

You bet Buckeye. If or better when I have wiring issues I will just pull my hair out cause it is a mess under there. Laugh

Good afternoon,

Another hot and humid one today then 5 days of rain if they are right so I cut all the grass,,, so let it rain! Storm Storm

Got my teeth cleaned yesterday. Boy do I miss my old guy, he did what you needed. This new guy is always trying to drum up business and do things I don't need. Angry "Oh that crown is old better replace it." NO It don't hurt and all the rest of the teeth are older, what do you want to do replace them to?  Huh?

Brent,

I agree with Fife on this one.  Been trying to get back there.

Dennis,

Sorry to hear about your dog.  Went through the same thing in January of 2017.  Picked up a new friend 6 weeks later.

Marty,

Which LHS are you working in the area?

Been crazy busy with work and dealing with a 2018 Mustang GT (and a horrible dealership) in the little free time that I've had.

Tomorrow will be brake line replacement on an 89 Probe GT.

Evening all!

Was traveling the last couple of days. Had to outrun Hurricane Gordon on the way home yesterday/today.

Will take me a day or so to recover from the trip.

Poured rain today, more rain on tap for rest of the week. Attributed to Gordon low pressure.

Hey Guys,

Yep, I'm still around.  Time has just been escaping me, by the time I get in for the evening, have sit down, and before you know it I'm out.

Went to the figure 8 races last weekend, been working on our cars doing some polishing, and cleaning.  Spent quite a bit of time in the train room.  Seems the more I do, the more I find.  But that is OK.

Roy, Glad you made it home safe, definitely seems like you had a great time.

Jim, Hope the issues with the dealership gets resolved easily.  I've been fortunate so far, been having really good luck with the ones I deal with.  (Lots and lots of luck)

Mike, You've got to spend lots of hours a week involved with all the soccer activity.  That's a lot of running around on the field.

Kev, I can relate to your dental experience.  One dentist I went said I needed about $15k in work than another $4k in 5 years.  Went to a different dentist, everything I need can be done for less than $4k total!!  Pays to shop around!

Buckeye, Sorry I haven't responded to your list, have a couple of things I've been wanting to do some checking into first.  You haven't started building yet, right?

Fife, How much of that foam spray did you use?  If I tried that I probably wouldn't be able to get in  the room.  Anyone remember InstaPak?

Well that's about all I'm good for tonight, will be more frequent.

Take Care all and be Safe!

Good morning.  The heat is breaking today and looks cool and rainy for the weekend.

Got some really good news yesterday.  My pup Luna who means the world to me had some bumps on her snout.  Turn out they are benign so that is a load off my mind.

Jim.  I spend my Saturdays at Imperial Trains just as a helping hand.  Keeps me busy while being around the hobby.  Regis is a good guy and it's fun.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Stay dry Roy.  They say we will get some remnants of the storm on Sunday.

dbaker - I used the rest of the can.  I attacked the layout with a plan; river banks and scenery fill.  The trigger spout that you screw on top controls the foam flow, so you can be neat about it.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes using foam risers for their trackwork, as it will add sloping terrain likity-split.

Note - wear rubber surgical gloves.

Good Morning from a foggy 70°F Southern Ohio,

The weather report is calling for rain later today and into the weekend.  Grass cutting may be iffy.  That could be Ok because then I may be able to do some work in the train room.  I am going to rebuild the outside frostless faucets.

Fife - Thanks for the tip of the spray foam on the layout.  I had planned on digging into the foam top for a pond and ditch or two, I may work in a small hill or two.

Kev & Don - At my last cleaning the dentist said I need to remove and replace an old filling because it is stained.  It is not bothering me so I’m not messing with it.  My bride had a similar issue but had her filling replaced and has had nothing but trouble with that tooth since then and will probably end up losing it, meaning more $$$$ and for what.  Good thing funeral directors don’t try to drum up business that is not needed.

May God bless

Great Day To All !

Finished with the surgeries, I hope. The port install and the hernia repair both went great. But having to spend almost a week flat on your back sucks. Tried using a tablet to stay in touch but just couldn't handle the tablet with one hand and type(actually hunt and peck) with the other. Had my first immunotherapy yesterday, so far no issues but I really did not expect to see any till after a few more infusions giving it a chance to build up in the system and start interacting with my immune system. Just hope and pray that by mid October I'll be released from light duty, otherwise I won't be able to do the Halloween layout in the garage

Lionel scores again, the LionChief+ Halloween Mikado that I had ordered and received a couple of weeks prior to my hospital time didn't operate as written in the owner's manual. After no response to my e-mails I found a work around and discovered that apparently they didn't update to a new manual for the LionChief+ with Bluetooth.

I remember going to the figure 8 races decades in the past where they would have the boats on trailers and the cars had to pull them around the course. Loose your boat and trailer and you were DQ'd.

Fife, If you want to keep any of foam structures from adhereing to the your base, lay down a sheet of parchment paper. The foam will mold to it but won't adhere. The 3railers used the Pergo underlayment when our layout was initially built, adhered with vinyl wallpaper paste.

Later all.

Glad to be up right again !

Aloha. Raining again and the heat broke - maybe for good - high only 65 today - it was 94 yesterday. Marty - that's good news about Luna... Doug, glad you are done with surgeries. Fife, that's a nifty use of spray foam. Brent, for years, we've taken the now much older kids to the beach at Hilton Head in SC for vacation - earlier in the season though to avoid hurricanes. We'd go to the beach in the morning and the pool in the afternoon! Kev, hope you are staying dry. The Fox (river) is high and its very soggy downtown.

Good morning, Rain all night and like Doug said cooling off.
Doug, The Fox and IL rivers are both full from all the rain up north. We have only had about an 1’ up to yesterday. Don’t know what we got over night yet but only heard the sump pump kick in once so far. We are good to go here up on the top of the North Bluff!
DougDG, good news on the surgeries. Heal up friend!  Yes
Don, Banks, I used to go to BobJo’s speedway in Sycamore Illinois and watch the figure 8 races years ago. I think they still have them. They could get dicey. Surprise

Dennis - condolances for your fuzzy buddy.

Great Stuff foam - I used that on my Polar Express layout.  Original scenery was wadded up newspaper covered with paper towel soaked in plaster of paris.  Since this is a portable layout, that didn't last long.  Ended up blocking the scenery contours with misclaneous pieces of styrafoam, and covering it with Great Stuff, then laying plaster cloth on top.  That has lasted about 5 years now.  Needs a little touch up before my scheduled showings this fall, though.

Figure eight racing - I only saw one figure eight race.  Was in the mid to late 70's at Spartain Speedway in Mason, Mi.  That is/was a paved track.  Thought the people who entered the race were daft.

We are up at our 'other place'.  Finally got the internet hooked up and running there today.  So far, so good.

My nephew and his family were up on Labor Day.  Cooked a spegetti dinner for them, with meatballs and grilled chicken.  My grand nephew caught his first fish that evening - a little bluegill about 5" long.

The blood tests from last week say my blood sugar levels are higher than normal now.  Goody, goody. Been fighting low blood sugar for a couple of years.  Now, I'm poking a finger twice a day and taking data so we can figure out what is going on.

Upcoming plans?  Yup, got lots.  Family reunion next Sunday, re-arrange the basement, wressle the eliptical out of the trunc and into the basement, a few odds and ends in the travel trailer, replace the tires on the garden tractor cart, change the oil on the Wheel Horse - got to find some Shell Rotella for that - and I'm sure that there are other things are going to pop up as well.

All for now.

Good Evening,

What a frustrating day, started off good, went to the dermatolgist and had pretty good results.  Only issue was some areas on my head that had to be zapped do to excessive sunlight.

Then we've been have trouble with the cable system (FiOS), primarily pixalation.  Loooong story short have spent 2 or 3 weeks reprogramming set box, then it was replaced.  That created more problems, technican sent out, he replaced it again.  New problems were resolved, but still have pixalation.  NOW a different box in the house not working at all.  So they are coming back tomorrow.

Buckeye, sorry to be so long in responding to your layout list, but some thoughts.

- As I do have DCS & Legacy, I used the "star" pattern for wire routing.  It isn't that difficult and don't use that much more wiring.  I've never wired using the "closed loop" method.  Biggest issue I see is with the control systems and having a high frequency signal being transmitted, the signals can have a canceling affect on themselves.  Or distorted signal.

- I typically use 14awg as primary distribution, and 16awg for feeders to tracks. (essentially blocks).  All lighting and accessories usually 18awg.

- Wire strippers, I really like these.  I have one pair I've had since the service, they are easy to use and verry reliable.  I have 2 one for 12-18awg, and another for 18-26awg.  Little expensive on the front end but well worth IMO.

Speaking of wiring, found a great wire holder somewhere, I think in CTT.  With some scrap pvc, cut a 3/8 or so line the length of the pipe.  Then cut the pipe in 1 1/2 or 2" sections.  Then drill a hole 90 deg to the line to accommodate the mounting screw, say a #8 or #10.  Then on the opposite side of the line drill a hole large enough for a screwdriver shaft to fit through to install the screw.  Works really well.

- No question dry wall screws are great.  The ones I prefer have the phillip/hex head.  They totally eliminate stripping all those stripped screw heads and bits.

Got to go and see what I can think of next to git rid of the pixilation.  (Checked all coax fittings, cable has been in place over 10 years and well protected.  Signal strength measured by technican and said its excellant.  Next thing is to check on the coax splitters.  Don't know why one of them would suddenly develop a problem.

Kev, Really enjoyed the link to the Fig 8's, the school busses were cool.  (I use to watch them in Rockford).

Take care all and be safe!

Don

Morning all

Rain is headed this way for Saturday and Sunday.  Glad I didn't close the pool because next week we go back to the mid 80s.

Lots of relief with Luna.  That has been on my mind for 2 weeks.

Trainwise not much happening.  Looking forward to York and just relaxing.

Just checkin in.

The 90s have broke, we have a sunny day in the 70s. A trip to the mall later this morning will probably be our last visit to Sears closing at the end of the month. For small gauges of wire I strip them with a Bic. Wait a few seconds and then pull the coating off.

Morning all!

We got a real frog floater yesterday...overran all my drainage and fixes...had an inch of water in about a third of the garage - but the fixes worked to have it drain out quickly where in the past I had to sqeegee the water out. More of the same on tap for today. The pool is full!

Still recovering from the trip. I do not travel well anymore...ugh....

DonB - spoke with El Camino Mike yesterday as he had yet to deposit my check for the wiring harness. The ECM harness he sent me is a little rough but usuable, only missing one connector. Will probably rewrap it. There are some folks selling OEM harness wrapping tape on-line.
