Kev if your transfoormers are plugged in and working they are OK.

Cold here too, a lite dusting of snow turned the roads to ice before they could be salted. Accidents galore last night. No train news till next Saturday. We will be running the very long train of flats w/military loads and then try for a 150 car freight train.

Good evening all,

Busy day.  Picked up truck, went to eye doctor, got plates for Encore, had somebody do a camera view of our sewer line, checked on paint for the shed, took chair that broke to furniture store to get it repaired, and watched Grimm and Emerald City.  Was thinking of going to some train shows tomorrow, but may stay home and rest or do some mini-marathon training.   I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Evening all!

65 today. Warmer tomorrow. Day was a waste, got pulled into some unplanned meetings which ran 3 hours.

Argh - scooters, small motorcycles, ATVs, etc., are equipped with master cylinders that for some really stupid reason are equipped with a plastic sight glass/fluid level window. Brake fluid eats the window. So it leaks like I have found on my sons scooter. Found lots of YouTube, online stuff, and sites selling replacement windows. Who is the idiot that puts a window that gets eaten by brake fluid on a brake fluid reservoir? Apparently there are a LOT of them.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny and a don't-feel-that-cold 27 along the Patterson Creek cut-off.  Spent yesterday evening binging on Hell on Wheels.  Looks like I'm going to the local bootery to get some steel-toes.  Reason being, work called and said they need me in the shop starting Tuesday (mainly as a third hand).  Made my happy.  Wifey happy, too...

Morning all.

Sounds like good news Fife, but to be honest as haven't really been keeping up on this forum, what shop.

Haven't been doing much other than selling excess on the bay. Been rearanging some items and deciding whats a keep and whats a go. Trying to get down to sets, Not all being actual sets, Some I have made up. ( 25 shelves equal 25 sets lol ) I need to put some items up on shelves that I have emptied. That may be my job for today.

Going round and round with Wal-mart trying to get a freezer from them. the first one got cancled for some reason the second one is in Merritta, GA. and is playing ring around the rosy between shipping depots there.

About to cancle this one as it was suppose to be here yesterday and I called about it and they say "can you give us 3 more days" I said " do I have a choice" I probably wouldn't be so mad, but this is the second one they where to get to me. I can goto Augusta, and get the same one at Best Buy today.

Oh well life goes on.

Hope all have a good weekend

Good morning,

Not real bad here. 31 heading to 47 with full sun.

Going to do spaghetti sauce in the crock-pot for tonight then just chill the day away. The back has been acting up since I hauled those 6 bags of salt to the basement the other day.

Sounds good FIFE, will keep you thinking doing some work. Yes

Roy, I can help you. Just "give up" on that scooter and I will take it and you can have mine. It only needs a little work and does not have those pesky master cylinders. It just has cables.

What do you think??

Morning.  Yanks sent cold air.  Warming next week.

Got some around town things to do.

SRO officer in high school incident resigned.  Mixed comments.  Most wanted him to stay.  Can't tell whole story.  Another officer [Sgt.] got state-wide award last night in big ceremony.  Youth Underage Drinking Prevention award.  Given by MADD.

Have a good weekend.

Afternoon all!

50's today and much cooler than expected. No warm up til Monday. So much for "winter" being over here.

Kev - LOL. I have enough on my hands. The good news about the chinese scooter is they are not an environmental problem - they just rot away into dust!

The cool erratic weather is keeping me from getting the scooter done.

Fife - Red Wing is the official "booter" of BNSF. Have to get the high tops to meet rules (lessens ankle twists) - I have a pair from previous work there. Remember - never step or walk on the rail head and stay 12 ft from the rails when not crossing them!

Good evening all,

Rested today.  Did start prepping lawn mower for this year.  One year I hope to mow the yard first before the neighbors do just to freak them out.  Watched US women lose to England 1-0.  Went to Mass to free up the Sunday.  Wife agreed to cut hair today as well.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' boys.  Sunny and 15 along the Patterson Creek cut-off.  I think we're going to church this AM, then I will probably watch the race after 2.  Painted yesterday, and will try to get some more in today.  Dug out my hard hat and cleaned it up as well.  It has a nice leather head-band.

Went to Super Shoes and got myself a comfy pair of CAROLINA boots.  Then Wifey and I went to PATRICK'S in east Cumberland for dinner.  Good food and service, with nice view of trains in the foreground, skyline in the backdrop.

Mornin' all.

Don't look like I'll get much done outside today, one of those kinda gray drizzly days. At least March ain't coming in like a Lion here like in Truckee. http://tahoetopia.com/webcam/downtown-truckee  Lots of that white stuff falling from the sky.

Guess it will be a good day to clean up the train room and do a little re-arrangement.

Fife, Have fun with the new job, sounds like it could be fun.

Time to go refill the coffee mug.

Prayers for all.

Later !

Hope you all are doing well. It's a little cool here in southeast Florida around 72 this morning. Hope the people out in California get to rebuild if neccessary, as they had some bad weahter.

Seems like I get a cold or flu or something this week, have been feeling a bit sick. Was in the hospital on wednesday for a few hours.

Hopefully I will feel better in a few days.

Good evening all,

Turned up the wick.  Blistered thru the first hour at a 4.5 MPH pace and then settled down to walking 6.5 miles at a 3.808 pace.  Total average for the 11 miles was 4.07 MPH.  I just need to get the distance up to 13.1 and I am ready for the Mini.  Before that I watched Man City add to Sunderland's misery with a 2-0 win and the NASCAR race was still going when I came home from my training.   Interesting how one car dominates the race then gets a penalty on the last pit stop that takes him out of contention.....Hmmmm....  Just saying.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Evening all!

Rained (really drizzle) lightly all night and day today. Good soaking stuff. To continue until tomorrow morning.

Watched th NASCAR race (pretty boring). I am not completely on board with the new format. It's fine that at the end of 60 and 120 laps they score the top 10, but why the yellow flag? Seems they should just keep going. The flag provides a planned opportunity to take a pit stop and blows the pit strategies normally needed for a full race.

Good Evening all,

Had a productive week, got the El Camino up and road worthy again.  Replaced the battery, alternator (2x, the first one had a bad bearing), changed the oil.  So itrs ready to go.

Got the framing in the train room done for the new shelves.  Actually got the shelves up today.  They seem really sturdy.  The room may fall, but the shelves should remain.

AND, reclaimed the yard and flower beds.  Cleared all the weeds, and that was a task!  FIFE, have a question, What is the proper care and feeding for Flamingos?  Chris went to NC and decided that I need flamingos as a souviner ???

The race wasn't very exciting today, had a tough time staying interested in it.  Oh well!

Monday, back to Dr. Mark's to work on his layout.  Have to add some diodes to the DZ2500 motors on most of his switches.

Looking forward to the warmer weather this week.

Take care and be safe!

Mornin' boys.  Partly sunny and 29 along the Patterson Creek cut-off.  S'posed to take Wifey to Oakland today; Lowe's too.

Agree that when one team "stinks up the show", it makes for a boring specticle, but that's always been the case.  NASCAR reeped this from building too many cookie-cutter mile-and-a-half tracks.  Rockingham used to be a good race to watch after Daytona.  Now it looks like Vegas is getting a second date.  Yawn...  Races are too long.  Yawn...  Red flags to favor stage conclusion.  Yawn...

dbaker - Ahhh, the proper care of your new pair of plastic pink flamingos.  They need to be proudly placed in a prominant setting, where all of your neighbors can appreciate their unique beauty.  Never situate them in a non-conspicuous corner of the yard or garden.  In your environment, they should be anchored down (1 bag of Sakrete should do), to ensure they don't migrate to the next block during the windy season.  You are a lucky man to have such a thoughtful son.

dougnotta - I've been in good mood since getting that call, to be sure.  It might affect going to YORK, but that's ok.  When 1309 comes out to play, I hope some of my fellow Coffee Pot mates will come to Cumberland, and I can host them at the new Fifey mountain estate.

Mornin' Fellas

Been rather chilly around here as of late, 'sposed to warm up through Thursday and possible nasty stuff this weekend. Hope to get out on the new bike today and tomorrow. TheQ has dinner meetings Wed and Thur so no ride time. Need to get my TSA dues in and look at schedule with TheQ to see about York... although I doubt I'll make it for the entire day, I do hope to get there to see everyone.

Not much else going on, so better run.

Fife - going from building O-Gauge to 1 Gauge? Nice! And yes, keep me posted on 1309's show schedule. I want to bring the family out for a trip this year!

Overcast, 50s today and tomorrow.

I'm not a race car fan, boring as a baseball game unless your there in person. If it's been a hot race(I do kinda check now and then) I'll drop in for the last few minutes. No train news till the weekend where our club host has one very very long loop of track, they are gonna see how many freight cars they can succesfully run. The layout fills the basement but it's just one loop winding all over the room.

Good morning from overcast and rainy 52°F Southern Ohio,

I am going to be working night shift for at least the next couple of weeks so I'll be going in at 6pm and getting off at 7 am.  Bleh.  It was a busy but satisfying weekend.  Friday I led the Stations of the Cross and Divine Mercy Chaplet at the Elementary School and will continue this during Lent.  Saturday was a Retreat with the people who are joining the Church this Easter, and in the evening helped with another retreat that the High School kids are participating in, then Sunday after Masses went to a surprise thank you party for one of the priests in our county who is retiring.  The county is served by 4 priests in 7 parishes and he may not be replaced.  Did some cleaning after the kids and bride went to school.  Now I'm going to try and get a nap before they get home or it will be a real long nightshift.

Chief – I saw that El Camino!  It is sooo cool.  Much better than the HHR GM tried.

Don – You will learn to love the flamingos.  They don't eat much and are entertaining

Fife – I've got a pair of Carolinas at work and I like them.

Mike – Good idea about getting the mower prepped.

Kev – That scooter is awesome looking

May God bless

Jim

Morning all. Had a great treat this morning as the NS freight went by (I'm about a football field legnth from the track) I watched as was surprise to see 3 engines ( normally 2 sometimes just one) so knew it was a long one. It didn't have a etd instead it had a beautiful Green/white/green extended vision caboose.

Dang wish I had my camera with me. That would of been a beautiful shot to get.

Not much going on here today. Have to take car in for normal check up.

Hope all have a good day

Ah NASCAR... wish they would go back to letting teams use REAL cars and not these cookie-cutter pieces of junk. Would love to see Challengers, Mustangs, and Camaros zipping around the tracks again... would make the Camry look VERY out-of-place. We would also be able to see what manufacturers actually build awesome race cars!

Now back to reality... the rules changes have ruined NASCAR for me, can't stand watching any longer. Too many idiot drivers taking too many idiotic risks and taking out 1/3 of the field... where is the fun in that?

Aloha. Warm and grey today. Entering Chicago's third month without 'trace-able' snow. Yay!

Fife, too bad about the photos. I'm trying to remember the last time I got photos 'printed' at Walgreens or someplace. It's been years.
Kev, I'm glad that tornado missed you.
Chief, that's a cool looking scooter.
Roy, I've always wondered why you're not supposed to step on the railhead at all - is it to keep from twisting your ankle?
SJ, '...as boring as baseball.' - be still, my heart!
Brent, I too wish NASCAR would go back to racing 'real' cars. Sure, take out the interior, put in the HANS device to be safe...

I have been under the weather. Ick!

Today I'm in Lafayette, Indiana where the Monon, Wabash and NYC used to cross paths.  I rode the Wabash as a student and the NYC with my Mom to Cincinnati where we would board the B&O National Limited. I never rode the Monon, but I vidvidly remember it running down the streets of Lafayette.  So you look in your rear view mirror.................

Image result for lafayette railroad running streets

Purdue University, my alma mater is west across the river.  The mechanical engineering school used to have a building where they tested steam locomotives. http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/purduetoday/didyouknow/2015/Q1/did-you-know-purdue-locomotive-testing-plant.html One of my professors was ex-Sante Fe. A kid in the dorm on weekends worked as a grade crossing guard for one of the railroads.  He manually lowered the gates and stood in the roadway with his lantern and stop sign.  The old Monon shops are still standing.  A steam engine still did switching duties in 1955.

I was born in Lafayette, and as a child throughly enjoyed Columbian Park & Zoo. The handcar ride was my favorite as I made the miniture hand car speed along the tracks.

And now you know how I got the train bug. Smile, Wink & Grin

Evening all!

80 today and windy as all get-out. Sun came out some since it is so warm and humid possible storms late tonight when the next cold front rumbles through.

RT - like you I missed a chance for a caboose a couple of years ago at a BNSF crossing. White caboose rolls bu with "Railroad Police" on it. Cool!

Doug - the rail head is slick and typically greasy. From the lecture I got it is a cause of a lot of injuries, falls, etc. The high tops help but as Don can tell you, even with those you can break an ankle.

Buckeye - great photo! As much as I wanted I never got to ride a real train back in the day. Folks were going to put me on the train from Houston to Cleveland when I was 12 to see my grandmother and relatives in Akron for the summer, but when my old man found out there would be a mid-night train change in St Louis (or KC), he put me on an airplane direct flight instead. He had been though the mid-west rail stations in recent years and decided a train station late at night in those days of rail travel decline was not a good place for a 12 yr old on his own. Today I would have to agree but I sure wanted that trip. The airplane trip was fun - in those days not many kids traveled alone on an airplane - mostly business folks - the stewardesses took good care of me!

Dennis - slot cars on the patio sounds like fun!

Phish/Don/Chief - El Cams and Flamingos!

Good Evening,

Spent the day at Dr. Marks, replacing switch motors or installing the diode fix for the "non-derailing" function.

Thanks for the advice regarding the Flamingos (or is it Flamingese?)  I was going to put them out yesterday, but Kay didn't want them to get wet in the rain. Bang Head  So they set in the family room.  Our city is crazy whenever a new business moves in they are required to put up some kind of a water display near the property.  One company had a waterfall, someone had put some Flamingos in it.  The city removed it within a few days, and posted no tresspassing and no littering or modifications to the waterfall.  So the next week more Flamingos appeared but they were cemented into the bottom of the waterfall, and had chains tying them down.  They lasted about a month.

Chief, I think I will keep my El Camino.  The color? UGH!  The rear body work? UGH  Loos like the body has been shortened also, and the tailgate mods?  NO.  (Did like the youtube video.)

RT, does your phone take pictures?  I always forget to use mine, so fully understand.

Doug, I WISH I had only twisted my ankle!  A five foot drop with the heel coming down on the railhead is what caused my issue.  But they are very slippery and do not have "flat" tops.  Most switches are remotely or automatically controlled, and it would be easy to get your foot caught between the rails.

Nascar using "real" cars?  That hasn't been the case for 40-50 years.  I don't think you could find a "real" part ANYWHERE on the cars today.

Buckeye, that would be so awesome to see a train like that come down main street.  Couldn't even imagine what the response would be if it happened here.

With all the talk there has been about slot cars, I sure would like to have that capability integrated into my layout.  You know that if any kids had the choice the trains would probably loose.  We had a slot car track at the base I was at in Viet Nam.  I actually was the track champion for a couple of months.  There would be racing everynight, and then a "round robin" type event once a month.  It was fun burned up a lot of hours.

Roy, You were right, he was thinking I was going to due that diode mod at no cost.  He wasn't too happy when he found out that wasn't the case.  So he tried calling Dennis and Steve, and didn't get very far.  Tried to explain that the switches work fine, except when a derailment caused a short.  I've got to convince him that derailments are to be avoided, not part of the "thrill".  Oh well..

Take care all and be safe!
