Good Evening

Raining here now, and the temperature dropped a bit. We are on a severe thunderstorm watch here though.

After getting groceries we spent the day putzing in our garden getting some stuff planted and talking to neighbours.

Hope everyone has a good evening

Happy Belated Birthday to Chuck!!!Happy B-Day Happy B-Day

Good evening all,

Busy day.  Dental visit and oil change both took much longer than anticipated.  Did some much needed yard work.   Made some needed phone calls on matters relating to the house.  Now have 3 medical visits scheduled on June 8th.   Opening day at track for oval practice.   Younger daughter having trip from h--- to DC today.  Left this morning and still not there.   I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' boys.  Partly cloudy and 64 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Both fifepup and middle princess vehicles are in the shop, at the worst time for me; too much fifebus.  Oh well...

lionroar 88 - ...with great fear and trepidation. Yes.

Buckeye - About an hour to my west.  Potomac Eagle less than 10 minutes to my east, and Cumberland a half hour to the north.  And a century ago, the Twin Mountain and Potomac would have been 15 minutes to my south.

rt - Hawk's Nest is on my "coal bucket" list, but is definitely an overnight trip.

Christina is not a happy little girl. The walking boot goes up over her knee, making walking very difficult for her, and it is heavy for a 3yo. She is milking this for all it is worth, plus a bunch! I'm going to let her go a few days to see if she gets to walking, but if she isn't walking unassisted by Thursday the Dr is getting a call.

Prayers for Christina to get well.

A couple of days ago (May 10th) was the 146th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory summit, Utah.  A friend of mine posted some pictures on Train Orders.Com of the 100th anniversary back in 1969.  I was there for that one and around Ogden and Salt Lake City where a lot of special train events were going on.  Even got a cab ride in a steam engine with a buddy of mine who knew the engineer.  Even John Wayne was there promoting his new movie "True Grit".  He arrived on a special train from the East but only rode it for a short time.

The 150th anniversay is supposed to be  a big deal but hope the Union Pacific gets their steam engines back in service by then including the recently moved Big Boy which had been in Pomona, California.  Last I heard, things were not going well with the new steam team over there.

Good Afternoon,

Finished the garage re-vamp, now working on the "Weight Room", exercise equipment, house computer, and lots of storage, books, files, cd's, software, etc.. Another 2 or 3 day project.  Eventually will get back out to the train room.

Have a perplexing issue going out there I'm not looking forward to resolving.  Been reading on another forum about engine batteries and BCR's.  Gets confusing to me.  Lots of questions and comments about using the BCR vs Rechargeable batteries, I think I'm opting for the battery.  Don't see the payback on the BCR, would be probably 15 to 20 years for a break-even.  Lots of time for a engines boards to fail.  Then whether to go with the original or some aftermarket.  Similar question there, aftermarket represents about a $3-7 savings.  But, when you consider what a engine costs, could be penny wise and dollar foolish.  Then the biggest dilema of all, most people say the original batteries will last 5-7 years, which is definetly in the range of most of mine.  The DCS has a feature which measures the battery and reports is condition as "HI, OK, or LOW",  I can't seem to get a continuous reading, one time its Low, then next time its High, and once in a while it can't find the engine! Bang Head  Other indicators are the sound AFTER removing power from the track, or ability to adjust volume.  Then throw on top of that track condition and that of the pick-up rollers, or even wheels (for the ground contact).  The easiest solution of course is to just replace the !@#$ batteries.  Been beating this issue for 3 weeks still haven't come up with a conclusion.

Started Physical Therapy last Friday, really went well!  Leg and foot really felt good.  Have an appointment with a Poditarist tomorrow, then start regulary PT 2x a week.  When I had the accident the safety shoe (boot) had steel toes, well the steel bent back and broke all my toes at the first joint.  The toenails have been growing out and the damage is clearing up, (white line).  No problem except the great toe, a new toe nail is coming thru and pushing the old one off to the side, causing ingrown affect.  Which of course will lead to an infection.  Which I REALLY don't want to happen on that leg while its trying to heal, could be disastrous!  So see what the Dr says, probably remove the old nail.Crying

Hudson John  Happy B-Day  Hope you have a Great One.

Ray, Not the best news regarding the UP Steam Crew, hope they get it resolved!

Take care All!  And Stay Healthy !!

Busy day at work.  Daughter finally got to DC and got her luggage.   Interesting evening as we listened to mariachi style music while we dined out.   Watched Flash and Izombie.  Nothing settled on either show.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Just got back from a week in Michigan.  Went to a memorial service for my wife's uncle on Friday, we spent Friday afternoon with her mom and took my mom out to lunch on Mother's day.  Glad to be be back.

We stopped by and had dinner with our oldest son and his wife on Sunday.  They handed me a bag with a Marx 90 degree crossing, a couple of 027 switches, two work cabooses, and a 636255 flat car - without its load - that they had obtained in the city wide runnage sale that was held last Saturday.  Knowing them, they did not spend much on them - they are what you could call 'thrifty'.

About all for now.

Off to Charleston SC for Wifey's Niece's wedding.  Back Sat. night.  Oldest Daughter babysitting and staying here.  Returning the favor since I babysat for her the other week.

Another Train accident.  Seems they are hitting vehicles, derailing and hitting persons all the time now.

Fife, you notice Buckeye said he fished there.  Didn't say he caught there.

Good day,  Sun is out but it is a cool 46. They are calling for 65 later. I got to get some grass cutting done but wow is it wet and with this cool weather it is not drying out.

That guy I got the motor from last Saturday replied and said he would be sending me the spreader bar for the Marx CP engine frame so I can mount the 1666 motor in it. I installed the 391 e-unit into the 1666 motor and it seems to be good. For now I will pull a Lionel tender and cars with it but you can pick up those tin Marx cars cheap so I may look for some of those for it.

Wife thinks I need to dress up a bit for the interview this afternoon for a part time driving job for a dental Lab.  Hard for me to be anything but casual Kev. I hate dressing up for anything. I had to laugh when they asked me for my resume. I am way over qualified for a driving job but I will give it to them if they want it. At this point it is just a lesson of my history anyhow.

The grand-son Jordan came out of his surgery yesterday okay. They installed the tubes in his ears and had to remove his Adenoids while they were in there because of infection. Hope this cures his ear problems. Lexi gets her tonsils out on the 29th. No end it seem.

Well have a good day. Best be moving on.

Good afternoon,

Been working on my pool for the last couple of days.  I have spent at least $200 on it so far trying to get a good chemical balance.  Either that or drain it in which case cannot refill because of drought.

TV all day is nothing but news of the Amtrak wreck in Philadelphia.  Finally got the official word from NTSB that the train was traveling 106 MPH on a curve with a 50MPH limit.  No word from engineer yet but I'd hate to be in his shoes.  Investigation will go on for some time.

Dinner out tonight with our church group at 5:00PM.  Too early for me.  I won't even be hungry that early.

Happy birthday Hudson JohHappy B-Day

Good evening all,

All sorts of news today, mostly bad.  Amtrak wreck is a tragedy for sure.  Helio got some air time today the hard way.   Scrimmaged with high school kids tonight.  I did not do well, but there is some potential among the younger kids.   Work was very quiet today, which was very needed.   Gravel has been laid in alley and behind barn.  Very nice.  Will mow tomorrow night with either 21 inch or 30 inch, whichever works best.   I hope everyone has a good day and prayers for all affected by Amtrak wreck.  Arrow had a good season end tonight.

Evenin' All,

Belated Happy B-Day Hudson John.

Visited the cardiac specialist today, will see my cardiologist on monday. Will need to make a decision on having an ICD implanted, the BetterHalf says why wait it's a "go" but heaven knows what this thing will cost. Hhmm, can you say "goodbye train budget for a long time". Sigh

Talk about feeling like an idiot, I know "here's your sign". Last friday someone left a note that one of the new CAB1L's was not working. So we diligently check it out sure enuff not working. Monday I call Lionel for a RMA# and the customer service rep asks some questions that I can answer in the affirmative except the last one. Did you check the channel selection ? Ooops, Ashamed  How does somebody "accidently" change the channel ???? Grumpy  Back in service.

Later all.

Good Evening,

Wow a lot to comment on, see if I can remember it all.

Kev, Good luck on the interview, the question you left remaining to ask is do you have a suit that will fit?  When I get up to full speed, I think I would like to take on a position as a volunteer at the VA, I was there earlier today and talking to a shuttle driver, it sounds like something I would like to do.  This guy was a young guy and out of work, he was doing it till he can find a job.  Said he was tired of sitting at home feeling sorry for himself.  Also, hope your Grand Children do well with their procedures.

Ray,  I can't figure out how that engineer could be going that fast and not realize it!  Doesn't make sense unless he was asleep at the wheel.  Your right wouldn't want to be in his shoes!!  And, for them to break the news so soon, his goose is cooked.  I've been pretty lucky with our pool, I have a guy who maintains the chemicals for $40/mth.  For awhile I didn't think it was worth it, but I was never able to find the time to do it.  The pool always looks great, and no algae issues.  I asked him to check the hardness and it was great, water hasn't been changed in over 10 years.  Saw in the paper that can't add more than 3 inches of water a week, that's a lot for us, we usually average between 1 to 2.

Doug,  Wow, that sounds like a significant procedure!  Hope everything goes well.  Regarding the budget the trains are getting to expensive anyway.  Thought you were going to say the Cab1 needed a battery. Tongue Tied

Had a great day today!  Had an appointment at the VA Podiatry, they clipped the nails, and checked the problem toe.  Then told me if you use Vicks Vapor Rub on your toenails, then cover them with a sock (small one) while you sleep, you will be surprised how soft the nail becomes.  Will prevent ingrown problems etc..  Then they asked me if I had "diabetic shoes"?  Never heard of them, so they prescribed them.  Went to the Prostetic Dept, and they called up on the web various manufacturers, and asked me to pick a style.  Did so, will receive in 2-3 weeks, $130 pair, my cost $0.  Can't beat that!  And, can get 1 pair every year.  Then had a Therapy appt this pm, that went really well, lots of stretching, exercises, and even massage.  Really felt great when I left.  Do have to admit it was a little awkward, the Therapist was massaging my foot and stretching it.  I was on a bench and she was at the end of it holding my foot and pulling it against her chest, I'm not sure who had the better experience but it went on for at least 15 minutes, she really did a good job. Oops

Cleaning "office, exercise, computer room" now into "spring cleaning"  think I will finish all the shreading tonight.  Don't need tax returns etc back to 84.

Hope everyone has a great day and STAY HEALTHY!

Don

Interesting evening.  My wife called me at work this afternoon with the news that there was a bird trapped in the chimney.

Got home and sure enough, chirping coming from the fireplace area.  Turns out that the bird was trapped behind the window trim where the weights run up and down.  Ended up taking the trim off of the window and found a young starling in the open area.  Took it outside and started putting the trim back on.  Then my wife points out another, slightly older starling perching on the back of one of our chairs.  Opend the front door and hearded that one outside too.  Near as we can figure, the second bird was behind the window trim as well.  Got a can of expanding spray foam and plugged up the hole where the birds probably got into the area behind the window trim.

All for now.
