Morning all. Been a week of weeks already Wife got up Tuesday morning to feed the outside cats and noticed a piece of chrome broke off the front of the truck. Got me up I see where the front grill been broke I call police they come make a report. I turn the truck around and notice its not running well at all and break need replacing soon light comes on well I glue the piece back on with gorilla glue and then notice a piece of wire and also the end of the one of the spark plug wires on the ground they also cut into one of the wire harnesses so not feeling safe to drive it had them come and get it. Will have it back Friday They rented me a 2014 Dodge Ram Pick-up I do not like lol they didn't learn there lesson back in the 50's - 60's with push button for transmission they know have a turn knob to put it in gear. ( I know its electronics but electronics break down)
Any way not much planned for today. My store at the flea market is full lol I even have some back stock seeing I don't have room to put it out. Need to work on some of it also that's not out so can get it out in time also. Need to get some parts in HO as need couplers, 1 set of trucks so far for cheap car and wheel sets. I have a bunch coming in which will be good parts supply I think so we will see.
Well dinning car has come and gone so time to get down into the den to clean up some of the mess down there.

Good evening all,
Busy day at work. Bathroom not done, won't be until Friday now. Long story. I think the reason there is less crossover between NASCAR and open wheel is that the cars are so different. Even when Indy went to mostly rear engine racers, they still had dirt cars that were sort of similar to NASCAR (Heavy front engine rear wheel drive machines.). The absolute worse decision ever made in racing history (my opinion) was dropping dirt cars from the Champ car series. That greatly reduced opportunities for American drivers to move up the open wheel ladder. Open wheel became the province of the road course people, which meant overseas people. One of the reasons Tony Stewart was good in NASCAR after doing well in open wheel was the sprint and midget racing he did and he was in Indy car during that brief section of time when drivers had that chance to do so. Most of the recent open wheel "crossovers" (including said sparkle pony) had no midget or sprint car experience. I hope everyone has a good day.

OH MY!!!! Just sobering up from Willy Nelson concert. No, busy Mayor day from early on till now. My new intern was here for first day. Had to get her setup and then we lunched with a former County Commissioner [still a political ally].

Jon is right. Willy came on, played continuously until we left an hour and a half later [9:40 PM] and was still going strong when we left the parking lot [speakers].

Doug M., quite a story about your commute. Hard for us here in Southern California to imagine what it's like to commute in Chicago or New York. Here the automobile is king but I think that will change when they get some of the new light rail lines finished. We already have several and one under construction that will come near me. My son is looking forward to when he can ride the train to work. Now he has a killer drive every day.
Cooler weather this week is a welcome event. Even got a little drizzle this morning which gave me an excuse to wash the dirt off my car.
Some time ago, I wrote an article for Lines South Magazine about a train I rode as a kid. In the most recent issue I see a photograph of that same train standing in the station in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1947. Wish they could have used that photo with the article. Anyway, I am grateful for the photo. It means a lot to me.
Grandson has another orchestra recital tonight at the high school. My youngest son will represent us. I would like to go but we were given a pass by the grandson who knows how hard it is for us to go at present. The seats (folding chairs) are incredibly uncomfortable for older people. BTW, he is doing very well with his studies. He took a college entrance exam right after mother's day and did well according to him. I know he crammed hard for it. He is aiming for science and mathmatics and is quite good at it. Math was not my best subject.
Doctor appointment tomorrow for my wife with our regular doctor. Another one the following week with the neurologist. Probably a dental appointment soon too. Lots of appointments lately.

Aloha. The weather was fine enough this morning for me to forgo my jacket. I had a horribly long commute home yesterday - on 3 different trains which is a new record for me, although over 25 years, I've certainly had my share of delays. Here's the story:It began when our 4:45 train died after pulling out of Clybourn station where the UP north and northwest lines diverge. This is the first station out of Chicago. We sat for an hour whilst the engineer tried to get the F40 to move forward. Of course we were before the cross-over so sat like a plug in a bottle for most of the rush hour trains. It was interesting to hear the radio chatter from the conductor, engineer and dispatcher in Omaha. What a bad day for them! The F40 could move in reverse so it pushed up back into Clybourn where we hurriedly boarded a train on the opposite (usually inbound) track like it was the last train out of Paris before the Germans arrived.Usually there's about 1,000 folks on a ten car train. So that's double the usual now on the train. This train became a local slowly moving homeward. This took another hour. Outside the Barrington station, we stopped because another F40 on a train already in the station died, blocking the outbound track as well as another train now stuck halfway into the small yard beyond the station. This took another hour or so. Finally it was decided that we would push the dead train in Barrington beyond the station, and we were allowed off - we all trooped down past the station beyond the barbed wire guarding against crossing the tracks, and crossed the 'live' tracks (which I'd never ever done), then trooped back to board another train on the usually-inbound tracks (remember this is the former C&NW and runs 'opposite.') This train left only to stop again for a while because the CN tried to run some freights across their crossing line just beyond the station during all this. Meanwhile apparently, our original train deadheaded back to Chicago where a UP switcher took the F40 to Metra's yard. Then the second train I had been on was used to push the other dead train further up the line past the cross-over so the yard could be cleared. A few inbounds were annulled because they usually used the equipment that would be turned at the end of rush hour. Now it started to rain...This third train had our original set of passengers, the passengers from the second train, and their own passengers. We toddled northwestwards and I finally got home 4 1/2 hours late. And the kicker is this morning, Metra distributed a pre-planned survey on how they were doing on my inbound commute. Bad timing for them, even if it wasn't anyone's fault. The most interesting part was listening to the radio as I was jammed next to the conductor and you could hear most of the dispatchers, engineers and conductors on the same channel trying to figure this all out - moving trains around, trying to restart the F40, troubleshoot the other F40, stop the CN freights, etc. Folks blame Metra but the UP - which runs 'my' lines - did a decent job...

The weather is warming up quite considerably out here. The daily highs are regularly hitting the upper-70s. Before long, it will be in the 90s. Today was uneventful which is a good thing. I grilled pork tenderloin for dinner and it was fantastic.

Well we made it through the Graduation. I don't know when I have seen so many people. But it was really managed well. There were two ceremonies, the first was for the entire university, then a second one for each school. There were 10635 graduates this weekend. (Found out Fullerton is the largest university in the Cal State University system.)
The first ceremony had a processional of all the graduates, and fortunately there was not a lot of individual awards, a few speakers and that was it. Then the crowd was released to find their way to the individual schools. Again a few speeches and then the individual procession. Chris is in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. I couldn't believe how big the Biology Dept was, must have been close to 500 people. Chemistry was rather large as well. Then the Physics Dept, maybe 15 grads. And then the Geology Dept, about 30 grads. I was surprised to find out that the Geology Dept at the Fullerton Campus is the largest in the state.
After the ceremonies were complete the Geology Dept had a small reception afterward. Got to meet a few of the Prof's, and a tour of the Dept.
So we ended up avoided all the traffic by the time we left.
We ended up hosting a lunch for our little group, at the Elephant Bar. Then home.
Spent Sunday recovering and a low key day.
All in ALL a good day ! Everyone seemed to enjoy and had a good time.
ONLY 2 MORE DAYS WITH THE CAGE !!!!!!

When those fans see open wheel cars racing side by side at over 220 MPH, they may get a deeper appreciation for what open wheel drivers do. The 500 has traditionally drawn stars from all over the world with all sorts of backgrounds. The Allisons ran Indy back in the60s or 70s as well as some others. F-1 champions drove here as well, and will do so in this race. Indy is not an easy place to drive. For example, today in practice, Mr. Busch, meet Mr. Wall. Mr. Wall meet Mr. Busch. By the way, IMS developed the SAFER barrier, and Indycar was using the HANS device years before NASCAR (one thing that totally ticks me off about stock car commentators!). I think if Kurt keeps it out of trouble, he could contend for a top 5. What scares me more about this race is the closeness of the speeds. There could easily be a 33 car freight train, and that could be disastrous if someone up front has a wiggle that goes wrong. We shall see. Woke up this morning to a Beautifull cover of May Gray which translates to higher humidity and much cooler temps. All the fires, except two, are 100% contained and in the mop up stages. Now if only we could get some rain to eliminate the blowing ash that will be making a mess of things when the wind blows.
The last of our company left early yesterday morning. The BetterHalf and I were dead tired so it was a vegatative state alll day. The museum on Friday had some gremlins all afternoon, think I may have fried a sound board in one of my RK 4-6-0's. If so this will be the second one in that same loco running on the same track.
Made out the check for our earthquake insurance, sending out today. For what it costs I'm surprised so many don't carry it.

Aloha. What a pleasant weekend! It was decent enough weather for the youngest to begrudgingly learn to mow the lawn. I picked up a few train books at a bookstore that was closing. The youngest and I even figured out how to launch an old model rocket he had that promptly landed on someone's roof about a quarter mile away. Oh well. Congrats on your son's hire, HudsonJohn! Condolences on the loss of your young cat, Brent. That is a kind gesture you were thinking about - picking up their meal - but if I was them, I wouldn't expect it - kids get sick, it happens - it wasn't your fault.

It didn't agree with his stomach... which leads me to my next question. If you are out and your child gets sick (we were at a Japanese steak house and were seated with a family we did not know), do you offer to pick up their bill?
