Good morning all,

Buckeye, glad you were not injured in your car adventure.  I pulled a stunt once up in New Hampshire when we were there on vacation.  While driving at night, I had to make a right hand turn on some dark road.  I saw something I thought was the road but it turned out to be just a place for highway materials to be parked.  Fortunately, I was able to stop before I hit the side of a cut in the hill.

Chief, I had the same problem with getting my grandson a layout.  His mother did not want an O gauge layout due to small space available so they finally settled on an HO layout.  The O gauge stuff I gave him gets run now at Christmas around the tree if at all.  "You can lead a horse to water etc" . Like the idea of your new floor mats.  Good place to put wiring to get from one table to another.  BTW, I see you are a fan of diet ginger ale.  I like it too since I discovered some around Christmas.

V8. what rain?  We did not get any over here on the East side of L.A. unless it was in the mountains.  Maybe it evaporated before it hit the ground.

later,

Ray

Got the breakfast thing taken care of this morning. Had a crowd of eight. I showed my great nephew another one of my locos. An FP7. He was absolutely nuts about it. From there I went grocery shopping. Now I'm home feeling a bit worse for the wear.

Bo, here is why you don’t want Pleated Woodpeckers around.

Pleated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers. Length 16.5" Wingspan 29" Crow sized species found in mature forest, where it searches for it’s favorite food-carpenter ants-by excavating large rectangular holes within hours. Surprise This Choke Cherry tree is a goner.

We've got some big woodpeckers around here. One of them like the utility pole in front of my fathers house. Not for anything in it but what's attached to it. A metal plate that supports the yard/security light. It pecks on the plate to toughen up it's beak. Sounds like a MAC 11 machine gun! I had a smaller one pecking on the 2x4's supporting the corrugated steel sheets of my over-roof. I shot a few times with a super soaker filled with hot water. It didn't like that and quit coming around.

Jeff, dampers and draft controls are fine, its just been COLD!!!  And I am out i the cold most of the day, and just can't seem to get warm this time of year.

At least in the summer time, I can put a fan on the coffee table and sit on the sofa in my birthday suit and cool off with a few Beer

This stupid flue thing has went from  my head to my stomach to my rear bowel area.   hope thats gonna be the end of it

KEV  Holly CRAP!!   never saw that before.  we have peckers here but they just make 4" oval  holes maybe 2" deep here and there or just "peck patches" , nothing like you have there

you think that tree will come back?   unfortianatly, those cherries are not  good wood stove materials

I cut one down last year, it turned into this powdered dust before it even seasoned

Good evening all,

Great halftime show by Beyonce!!!  Fifedog, it is Baltimore's game to lose.  Spent the day cleaning the house.  Commercials are so-so so far.  At least the Princess was not so prominent and she kept her clothes on for once.  Posting now during the power outage.  Wonder if it is a ratings ploy since the game is a blowout.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

I'm rooting for Ravens. Usually I just choose a team to root for and hope they win.

As far as halftime, I'll watch once they have Aerosmith or Bon Jovi performing, my opinion though.

Hello all

Another quiet night collecting photons, as least the ones that make it thru anyways. We have a system moving thru w/ a lot of cloudcover, no snow though.

DJ - great news about Tyler! That kid deserves a medal!

Buckeye - hope you are ok. I used to have similar fun on Nevada roads getting caught in a sudden snowstorm. Pickup truck w/ 33 X 12.50's (they came w/ the truck) was not a good combo in the winter. Fortunately in Nevada, unless you happen to hit a road sign they put up every few miles,  it wasn't a big deal. Lock the hubs, check your shorts, and get back on the road.

RT - ah the driving of the first spike!

Kev - we have Gila woodpeckers here in AZ. They have quite a bit a character. They love to pound on stovepipes and water heater stacks. Apparently it's some kind of territorial thing, the bigger the noise the bigger sounding the bird. But wow they don't do anyways near that kind of damage!

DougM - the switchman's tower lights up. Three sides are lithograph and one side has red plastic behind a window cutout. They came in several variations both pre and post war.

Did some research and found front shocks for the Corvair hardtop. Most vendors don't even have a listing. The lower mount has a large built in spacer, but it turns out to be the same as early 60's Cadillacs. This way I can get them in town for only $20 apiece rather than mail ordering them at much higher prices. I'm pretty sure these are the original shocks, yep, that means they are 48 years oldIndifferent And yes they are done. Also ordered front sway bar bushings so this will hopefully take care of a somewhat annoying rattle that also came w/ the car.

Found a Marx 7" State of Maine boxcar on the bay for real cheap. My dad's family is from Maine so I've been wanting one of these. Something for the 999 to drag around besides it's caboose.

Since I now have a working transformer up here I will work on a few train related projects. I think I'm going to install the circuit breaker I just got into a project box w/ volt and amp gauges and maybe an indicator light. My local electronics shop has some really nice surplus Simpson gauges that I've been needing an excuse to useBig Smile Then I can hook this in series w/ any of the older transformers I use.

Hello all

Well we are in the clouds and got a little dusting of snow. Since we were closed up for a bit I decided to look more into our plumbing issue. We have two sinks in the movable part of the building. The lower sink fills up an under sink sump which has a float system that automatically pumps it out. Down in the non-movable part of the building is another sump connected to the flexible line.

A few weeks ago the under sink unit started leaking and we also found out that the float switch was bad. A week after repairs I found the pump running constantly and more water on the floor. Shut down the system again. Tonight I took apart the lower sump, which to my knowledge has not been apart in 20 yearsIndifferent Wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been since we don't $#!+ above the twist. Lower sump switch and pump were flooded out and shorted and looks to have been that way for some time. Apparently the upper pump has been trying to push water thru like 75' of line and then thru the lower sump. Looks like our mechanic will be going to Grainger this week.

DougDG - I have seen several V8 Corvair cars but never a van yet. Was in a Greenbrier (window van) or a panel van? If it was a panel that's a bit of a rare bird like mine. Less than 50,000 ever built.  Greenbrier production continued until 1965 w/ almost 58,000 units. Next in line is the Rampside w/ 18,000 and the rarest of the forward control Corvairs the Loadside w/ less than 3000 units built.

Konbanwa,

We had a lazy Super Bowl Monday out here.  I took off work today to stay home and watch the game.  It came on at 8:30 AM.  Although I wanted the 49ers to win, I was still pleased with the game’s excitement.  The game ended about 1:00 PM and I didn’t do much else the rest of the day either.

Good joke RT.  The benchwork progress is coming along nicely.

Kev – I think your superelevation plan is a good idea.

Joe

Good morning.

Not feeling good this morning. But this time it feels as if I might have a stomach bug or something similar. It doesn't feel like it's anything serious, but I still don't feel great.

Finally have work tonight. Had one heck of a dry period recently. Will be nice to have more money in my pocket.
