Sunny and high 40's today.

RI52 - My Cobalt is on 18" cast aluminium wheels.  Both front wheels seem to leak.  Since an aluminium casting is just a collection of voids held together by a lattice work of aluminium, I do suspect the wheels to be part of the problem.  I did have a screw in the right wheel, which I've plugged.  I've checked the left front a couple of times for FOD and found nothing.  I think the next move is to switch the wheels front fro back and see if the problem moves.  Then again, the tires are getting close to the end of their life.  I think I'll end up with some new ones later this year.

I am not very mechanically inclined from a hands-on standpoint.  So when I make an observation it is based on my own very limited experience.  (nice disclaimer, isn't it?). Smile, Wink & Grin

My wife's left rear tire started leaking this past Fall on her 9 year old rims. This particular rim however was a  new-in-box oem replacement due to an accident my wife had two years back...... she was t-boned just driving down the road.  So this particular rim was only 2 years old!

The leak was slow but steady, but the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) kept talking to her (warning light on dash).  The tire needed air every few weeks.  Took it in to my mechanic and he performed the soapy water approach and the leak was discovered where the sidewall of the tire intersected the rim (bead?).  He deflated the tire and reinflated it.  No go, still leaked.  So he took the tire off the rim and used a power tool to polish off any residue on the entire rim edge.  Remounted the tire and the leak was gonzo.  That was 5 months ago.  No problems since.

I also have the mechanic use my tire gauge because I have three of them with each measuring the exact same psi.  Two are digital and one is analog.  The analog one was a gift from my father in law (car maniac), and this one is glass and brass, and you can easily see 1 psi increments.  I don't trust the tire gauge at my mechanic's because his measures about 2 psi low......showed him all three of mine meauring my tire pressure for his reference.  He laughed and didn't charge me for the leak fix!

Another thing I noticed as it pertains to the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring systems on cars).  They work, sort of.

The one on my car has a display on the DIC (drivers' information control).  The actual (alleged) psi of each tire is displayed on the DIC when you pull up that info.  The yellow TPMS light on the dash will come on if any one of the tires falls below a factory set threshhold......then you can check the DIC to see which tire or tires are off.  However, the TPMS never accurately measures the tire pressure that my gauge does.  Each TPMS-monitored tire pressure can be off by as much as 2-3 psi!!!!  Either plus or minus!!!!  I suppose this is because the TPMS sensors mounted on a wheels takes a real beating.

I read that the batteries in these TPMS sensors are only good for about 7 years.  Then the TPMS sensors have to be replaced because the batteries in them are not replaceable.  My sensors cost $155 EACH.  Well, that can be the cost of an entire set of new tires plus an alignment!!!!

I believe TPMS are now mandatory on all new cars.  I suppose that is to make cars safer, especially for folks who don't visually check their tires and see one is low, don't ever gauge-check their tires for the proper psi, don't adjust their tire pressures until something bad or expensive occurs, and can't feel a difference in the way their car is driving until it is near disaster.

I must admit, however, that I'd still rather have a monitor tell me something is amiss or going South before running into trouble out in the middle of nowhere at O-dark thirty during the Winter with my wife, dog, or grandchildren in the car.

Jack

PS:  The younger guys on the forum can't appreciate the fact that we "seasoned" guys used to get by just fine without all of these idiot-proofing devices on cars.  Just imagine how much more reasonable the cost of a new (or pre-owned) car might be without all of these add-ons.  Or how much cheaper they would be to own and operate.

We got a WHOPPING 1/2 inch of snow last night   As much as I am sick of winter, i would like a good 1 plus foot snow storm just as a good excuse to shack up for a day or two

Today is an easy day. I have a project to work on and a few chores to do. Then I will relax and wait for Spring. This weather can go away as far as I am concerned.  Lunch and a nap, for sure.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Good morning.

Slept well last night. Work again tonight, but still nice to have some after this dry spell. We have been getting some snow squals lately, nothing that's really accumulating on the roads, so I'm not worried.

Konnichiwa,

The workday is just about over so I now have a few minutes to post.  I had a few meetings today and the usual paperwork so nothing exciting happened.  The weather forecast is calling for 6-10 inches of snow overnight; I sure hope they’re right.

Jack – Six-mile runs are part of the training plan.  I have had a few double-digit runs and hit 17 once during this training plan.  I plan to run 18 next week and then taper the running until the marathon.  I won’t break any records but I’ll finish just fine.  Once you can run 18 or 20 miles, you don’t need to run any farther during the training; it’s all mental at that point.

I’ll pray for all of us in need.

Sayonara,

Joe

I put the 2018 I got recently on the track today.  It too cycled the e-unit and wanted to move, but would not run.  I pulled the motor out to see what I had and found that it was suprisingly clean, compared to the outside of the locomotive.  I doused it well with contact cleaner, polished the commiutator, wire brushed the wheels & pickup rollers, and put fresh lube where it should be.  After a couple of test runs with the motor only on the track to get the e-unit cleaned to work reliably, it is running smoothly.  While I had the motor on the track, I eased it up to the string of 8 cars that were on the track.  It pushed them with no trouble.  The smoke uint still works, too.  I think it is a pellet type smoke unit.  Guess I'll look around for a kit to convert it to fluid, so it will use the same supplies as the rest of my fleet.  Standardization is a good thing.

I gave the shell a bath with warm water and dish soap, and it is looking OK.  One corner on the cow catcher is tweaked and the back corner under the cab is also bent.  Looks like this one might have had a flight off of a table at some point.  The paint is chipped and worn, but not too badly.  I think I'll leave it as is.  It has a certain petina to it that comes from a history of use.  I don't really want to loose that to a re-paint.  I'll get it back together tomorrow night and start in on the tender.  Besides being dirty, the tender will need re-wiring - both power leads are broken off of the trucks.

All for now.

Jeffrey, no doubt who your nephew's favorite uncle is now.  It is great that you guys are enjoying the trains together.  This is the stuff that memories are made of.  Congratulations on the new tractor!  I hope it makes life easier for you.

V8, congas on finding the new couch.  I'm not a rag picker put I saved a nice wagon from the trash man a while back too.  It has pneumatic tires even.  It wound up in my train room with lots of train boxes piled up on it.  Need to put some air in the tires if I ever use it.

My pot belly is telling me that I need to diet some more.  Walk more too.

later,

Thanks Jack.  Many years ago in a land far far way, I was paid to break horses, so the rock cliff was just a love tap.  Cowboy

Isn't it ironic that the worst car wreck I had occured outside of Columbus?  Back in the early 1980s.

I was driving on one of the interstates at night on my way back to my hotel after a long day at work and a business dinner.  I was travelling in the right lane and saw a car way back in my rear view mirror, really ripping in the left lane.  The driver apparently decided to make a 45 degree right maneuver across the center and right lanes to make an exit and caught the left front of my rental car.  I popped the right guard rail at a rather direct angle.  55mph to zero, pow!!!  The driver skipped.  The rental car was a total.  Since the front doors were sprung and wouldn't open I crawled out the (now gone) driver's side window to exit the vehicle.

I was shaken up but all things considered was relatively unhurt.  Fortunately, a Ohio State trooper pulled up a couple of minutes later, jumped out, and ran over to see if I was OK.  Then he observed "You had your seat belt on, didn't you."  "Yes, how did you know?"  He just pointed at my rental car.......the entire front end was adjusted back toward the firewall by about 3 feet! Surprise

I dodged a bullet on that one with just a black eye and a bruised knee.  Down the road, surgery removed a bone chip the size of a thumbnail from the knee.  My Dad took all of the credit for my good fortune, first by reminding me about how he had told me about seat belts......."If it only works once in your lifetime....." and then remarking that I must have inherited his hard head. Laugh

Mike - prayers for your daughter!  Kev - glad you didn't leak any brains and hope you feel better.  Jeffrey - sounds like a good tractor, congrats on the new equipment and the train fun you had.  Thanks for the kind thoughts, but my back was pretty much better today.  I took Chewy to the vet and she got eye drops to heal an ulcer - not sure what caused it.  She is sure a good dog.  TARDIS is ready and we have banilla, but no lemon - need to go hook up with John again!  Let's go!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

A quick visit:

SJ: Good luck at the doc's tomorrow.

Kev, Economy could have made them for Case. This one has hydraulics and a 3 point hitch. It has a 14 HP Kohler Engine and the trans is the same one that was used in the Crosley, I believe a BW T90 or 91. Some came with a tandem transmission. This one is a candidate to have a front end loader installed. I may just build one.

Have a Good Night!

It has been a busy weekend! My son and I picked up a 1973, Economy Power King 1614 Tractor Saturday. That was an all day affair, for it was 3 hours each way into Delaware. As we were loading the tractor, my son tells me that he thinks that a tire is leaking on the trailer. So we stopped at a local Tractor Supply to get a new tire with rim and they were out of that size. So we stopped at the nearest gas station, filled the tire, a slow leak down about 10 lbs. We stopped every 1/2 hour or so to keep an eye on it. We made it back without an incident. Anyway the tractor runs great.

John,

That 1973, Economy Power King 1614 Tractor looks a lot like a Case tractor my brother had back about then. I wonder if they made them for Case??

Top left and second row.

Jeffery, good to hear you are getting a tractor upgrade too, My Huskeyvarney is a hand operated hydrostatic tranny too. I like it just fine. What is the model that your dad got?

Darn crud is kicking me again,,,,,,,on ,,,off,,on,off. WTH??

Night boys.

It's been a busy day and I'm wiped. Ran some trains for my great nephew today. He used my Digitrax Zephyr to change out motive power from a lashup of geeps and a slug to a trio of F units with minimal coaching from me. Well, time to pack it in. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening all.  Busy day.  The fairly new Cisco wireless router acted up.  Had to call Cisco and got the nicest lady in the Philippines [yes, spoke perfect English with a little northern accent].  She sent into my wireless through my laptop and did new upgrades.  Fixed it.  By then time to get ready to go to the Dr. about this cold.  New meds.  Then County Commissioners and then, Town Board tonight.

Good evening all,

Chuck, you definitely need to reaim the cannon as SE Indiana got another 1-2 inches of the white stuff today.  Made for a sloppy mess all day.  No cavities as check up went well.  Did some errands for the "saucy wench" and tried to get some other items done as well.  Only a four day work week this week.  Looks like daughter will have one procedure done on Wednesday and another on Thursday.  Could be an interesting week.  TBIL and I can pull double shifts until Brutus is better.  I hope everyone has a  good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Kev: OUCH!!! I felt that nail.

Jack: Mom has a reprieve. She goes for Chemo Wednesday and she does not have to see the radiation Doc until a week from Tuesday. On the way home I will take her to her favorite dinner for lunch.

SPMan, Ray, Prayers for you and that Oxy machine.

Jeffrey: Congrats on the new tractor. I still use my 1990 John Deere. Patche dthe mower deck countless times and rebuilt the spindles.

Jake: Get well soon.

I'm feeling pretty good now when compared to how I felt this morning. Still kind of tired, but mostly end-of-day-out-of-school kind of tired. Looking to get home, relax, and maybe do more decaling (yes, I've been doing a lot of that recently, and will be doing plenty more Stick out tongue)

It's been a busy day. Went to my fathers place for breakfast this morning. Then brought my great nephew here to see the layout in action. Boy when I turned on the room lights he thought he'd died and gone to heaven! His eyes got almost as big as his face. I showed him how to work the Zephyr and he picked it up real quick. He got to run a long train being pulled by three geeps and a slug then I showed him how to switch them off and put a trio of F units without touching the locos. After running the F units for a while for a while it was time to take him back to his mother. From there I went to town and got a couple of pizzas. I haven't yet had a chance to eat a piece of either one yet. As soon as I got back my father called and said he was coming to pick me up to go look at a new yard tractor. He needed to see how well it fits me before he buys it. Well I stuck the pizzas in the fridge and we went and looked. It's a large Murray-Ohio, 46" cut, 20hp Briggs and Stratton, hydrostatic tranny. With the exception of the parking brake which is set with the left foot, a plus for me, it's all hand controlled. With the left hand advance the drive lever forward or backward for forward and reverse. The further it's pushed the faster the tractor goes. Steering is by steering wheel. I would have nixed steering levers real quick and he knows it. I'm sure I'll have to make a slight modification so it can backed up with the blades engaged. I told him I like it and he bought it on the spot. We loaded it onto his pickup and brought it home and I put it in the shed. It's already been made clear to the others that I'm the primary operator. They'll have to live with the little MTD Yardman. Now why did he get this new one? Well the old Peerless is going away. After 15+ years the engine is still good but the rest of it is pretty much worn out and we can't get the parts we need to fix it any longer. The mowing deck is rusting out and the tranny is singing it's death song. He saw late in the season last year that I was having a hard time with the Yardman. Most of it's controls are set up for the right foot. That doesn't work well for me. Driving it in forward was hard enough, reverse was extremely difficult. This new one has the physical size and weight of the old Peerless so adjusting to it is no problem. Well enough about that. I now have some time to myself and I hear a pizza calling from the fridge.

Jeffrey, thanks for sharing your feelings about your mom.  Missing a mother is perfectly natural but it still hurts.  Time will heal.

Saw the first half of the Super Bowl.  Did watch the half time show with Beyonce'.  Switched over to the Music Man musical on movie channel after that.  More my speed.  Sounds like the niners made it a game at least in the second half.  That must be their strategy, wait until the other team kicks your butt and then start playing.  Didn't work this time though.

Jack, yes the weather gets rough here sometimes.  I even had to wear a jacket this morning for my walk.

Still a little apprehensive about the new portable oxygen concentrator my provider switched me to.  It delivers pulse doses of oxygen only and is not continuos flow.  The question is weather or not it will be OK to use when I sleep.  It depends on your breathing to dispense oxygen each time you breath in.  I don't know if my breath is strong enough when I sleep to activate this thing.  The only way to be sure is to have an oxymeter test I suppose to record your breathing at night.  I have a continuous flow machine that I use in the house.  The portable is only for travel.  Need to talk to my doctor about this.

Have a good week,

Ray

Kev, listen to Brent.  Just don't follow in his footsteps.  Saw a leg and arm off while falling from a tall ladder. Wink

Okay Chief, Why did you have to go and say thay??  Tongue Tied

So I am adding a light fixture above the layout addition and standing on the table with my head in between the upstairs floor joists pulling romex wire and I lift my head and feel a piercing feeling in the top of my head.  Surprise  Yeah right,,,,,, a nail is jabbing me in the head.  Bang Head  Bang Head  I was lucky that I was moving slowly and only minimal brain damage accrued.   Dunce

Well that job is out of the way. I picked up new saw blades for the jig, miter, and circular saws this morning. Let see how that goes. Whistling Black Eye

Good Afternoon From Windy Cape Ann,

We too got hit late last week with a taste of Spring (60s) but things have returned to normal, albeit a tad under the normal low 30s temps this time of year. We too got the wind gusts to 60mph last Thursday and Friday; but I don't seem to have any shingles laying around in the yard.  Have not yet had a chance to scope things out in the sunlight.

I still can't figure out why so many here continue having forum issues......lost posts, signing on, font size, etc.  Now it is with pop-ups.  Maybe it is because I am still running ancient software.........IE 7 and Windows XP home.  Instead of upgrading, perhaps youse guyz should be downgrading. Smile, Wink & Grin

Brutus.......was sorry to hear that your wifey's hours got cut back 20% for the foreseeable future.  It is never a good time. Angel

RT.......if you did get hacked, I didn't get anything suspicious though my wife DOES think your emails to me re 726 and 736 Hudsons for auction/sale are a bad influence on me. Whistling

Buckeye........I am so glad that your unintended visit last week to that rock wall did not cause you any injury. Thumbs Up

HudsonJohn.......congratulations on your daughter Michelle's breaking ground and getting in the foundation on her/their new home.  So much for your retirement!! WhistlingLaugh

Rich.......if you run into any snags with your "D paperwork" this coming weekend, let me know.  I can help with the embellishment honest statements of fact.  When I get done with it, you may have a new and unexpected positive cash flow from all of this. Whistling  Angel for your friend's Mom.

KEV........hope you are nearly over the hump with your cold symptoms.  I use Afrin nasal spray.  About as effective clearing up stuffed up noses as using Drano; and each use lasts for about 12 hours. Thumbs Up on the layout expansion progress video!  RIP for your Cherry tree......along with the pics of the tree damage and the ones of your pet Pleated woodpecker, looks like a scene out of Jurrasic Park......thing is almost as big as a Teradactyl.  Stick out tongue

8n..........re your leaky tire, my money is on either a rim leak (do you have alloys?) or a puncture (nail or screw) because the air loss is not continuous or constant.  A bad valve stem would be continuous.  Re air loss because of the colder temps, don't think it is that.  You would lose only 1psi for every 10 degrees colder it is/was from when you last checked the tires.  The psi comes back up about 2 psi when you are driving for 20-30 minutes, or 1 psi for every 10 degree increase in ambient temp.

SJ.......wait until you get a quote on a new furnace.  Be sitting down when you read it.  May be in the 5 digits!!! SurpriseBang Head

BOC.....souds like da code is movin' on. Thumbs Up

Chief........was glad to read that you finally got the heat pump issues in the BOX squared away.  Condolences however on the bill. Bang Head

JimmyT.........did you check pre-purchase to see if your new 13.2 inch rear rotors will fit with your wheels? Surprise

Hope JON is acclimating himself to the Ioway Winter. Whistling

Ryan.......so when do we get our autographed copies of your video?  Wonder if you will get nominated for an academy award:  "best comedic actor in a documentary." Laugh

JoeyD........six mile runs are not going to prepare your for the marathon unless you plan on taking a good dose of amphetamines and pain killers before your run. Surprise

Prarietype........re that dead and smoking Alco 200 motor, back in the early 1960s your symptom on my slot cars usually turned out to be a bad winding somewhere on one of the armature poles.  Had to scrap the motor and either replace it or rewind the existing one.  Bang Head

KEN  (krapug).........where have you been hiding?

Adios Muchachos.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Crystal Clear and 20s Taxachusetts,

My apologies for being mostly MIA since last Wednesday.  Life interfered, leaving me a zillion posts behind.  I missed a lot of important stuff, so I need to play catch up.

DJ...........I can hardly contain my joy over your positive news on little Tyler.  Over the past too many months you and your family have managed to scale a most daunting and formidable mountain and take on all that was thrown at you.  Tyler is one very brave little boy with parents who had no quit in them.  The DOC's report this past week could not have been more welcome news.  Thumbs UpBowAngel

Jeffrey......I was touched by your tribute to your Mom.  I hear you when you say that you miss her so much.  I hope that your Dad is doing OK.  Time eventually heals a lot of sorrowful wounds but never erases the fond memories.  Not a day goes by that I don't think of my folks (RIP). Angel

Right about now Brent and Susan may be a proud Dad and Mom for the second time.  Prayers that all is going smoothly for them.  Brent, as for being color blind, make sure you don't accidentally run a red light on your journey homeward bound with the precious cargo.  As Fife said, "Smooth sailing!!"   Angel

AF Ray.........I was glad to hear that all looks positive on your family's medical fronts.  That is a lot to hit you all at once.  You and your family have my continued prayers.  Angel

HudsonJohn......I suppose your Mom is a bit lit up that her treatment has to continue a little while longer.  I hope she is not too discouraged by this.  If necessary, on your way to and fro, take her to an outlet mall on the way back home.....it will take her mind off of things. Prayers continue.  Angel

MikeC.......I hope that this morning brings good news on your daughter.  GB issues are no fun.  Angel

RaySP........I was glad to hear your wife's eye procedure went well and hope that she's seeing a lot better this morning. Angel

SJ........I was glad to read that your recent visit to the skin Doc was once again successful.  What a lot of the younger folks here don't understand is that us older more "mature" guys grew up as kids spending a lot of time in the sun without the benefit of SPF anything.  And I don't mean Sunday Photo Fun. Smile, Wink & GrinAngel

Gotta start reading to see what else has been going on here.

Jack

Rock, she is ALWAYS on me about making sure theres gas for the tractor and gas for the generator, etc,  one time i recall dumping gas from the lawn mower just to have enough to plow the driveway open to go get more gas to finish plowing the driveway  to this day I have not heard the end of it.

Hudson, I always bought what I liked, but now that i can run them,  as far as steamers are concerned, I really am taking a liking to MTH
