Buckeye,

               Glad you're alright.

Kev,

I've got a similar freezing problem.  That's what I get for keeping the Extra Gold in the garage next to my other tools.Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Morning, 20 and a fresh snow covering the Jersey Shore.

It has been a busy weekend! My son and I picked up a 1973, Economy Power King 1614 Tractor Saturday. That was an all day affair, for it was 3 hours each way into Delaware. As we were loading the tractor, my son tells me that he thinks that a tire is leaking on the trailer. So we stopped at a local Tractor Supply to get a new tire with rim and they were out of that size. So we stopped at the nearest gas station, filled the tire, a slow leak down about 10 lbs. We stopped every 1/2 hour or so to keep an eye on it. We made it back without an incident. Anyway the tractor runs great.

Kev: I went thru the planning and construction of a new house once.  I did a lot myself and working 2 jobs and building the house was enough. Now after 25 years it is time to remodel and update the house.

I have been burning more wood than usual also. My furnace only sees to run to make hot water and it is 72 inside right now.

Mike: I wish your daughter the best and a speedy recovery.

Ryan: Like me you have a mix of brands. I really like the postwar trains but I do have a lot of modern. i have Lionel TMCC, but the owner of a LHS is working on me to switch to MTH DCS. To me there is no perfect system and when I get to my new layout I will probably set it up conventional and gradually switch over to DCS.

Fife: It could be worse. When my daughter got married and moved out she moved across the street. Now the new house that is being built is about a  mile away. Come to think of it it is a stones throw from AF53's #1 daughter. Ray and my kids all live in the same town and they are within 10 minutes from our houses.

AF53, Your sister Linda could not believe that you put a camera on your engine. Doray asked me when I am doing it!

Thoughts and Prayers to the growing list for all in need.

Have a great day!

John

Aloha. Grey and snowy this am. Just like yesterday. Spent all day watching the college boy's final home hockey game for the year. Then watched the Big Game... Bride was apologetic she forgot about it and we didn't have any snacks. But I told her we have beer so everything is just great.

Buckeye, glad you are OK. I still remember suddenly waking up in my Nova -- full of screaming co-eds, whilst sliding down I-80 sideways in a Pennsy blizzard. One of whom was 'driving'. After slamming into a snowbank at the bottom of the hill, I remember thinking now we're really in trouble. Then miraculously a wrecker showed up, pulled us out and wouldn't take any cash. I drove the rest of the way back to Illinois.

Sounds like my Scout experience was similar to others. One year, 'camping' consisted of being dropped off at an abandoned slag dumping site in northwestern Connecticut, with a sleeping bag, a canned ham and a .22. No adults. That weekend was like Lord of the Flies.  Can't you imagine doing that today?

Bob, thanks for the Marx tower explanation. Nice pickup of the Marx 'State 'o Maine' car.

Good morning. It's 49° with 87% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a fair chance of rain. The high will be 68°.

Nothing in particular planned for today. I might be able to get in some uninterrupted layout time today. Then again someday pigs will fly. Yesterday I had time to run a train around the layout a few times after I shut the computer down last night but not much else. By that time I was wiped. Looks like I have some older freight cars and bits and pieces headed my way. I'm also working on picking up a used loco or two. 70's and 80's era stuff. Looks like the projects will be picking up again. Good thing too. I need something to keep my mind off recent events. The more the better. Who am I trying to kid! It's just fantasy project work and I'm trying to bury myself and my feelings in it. I said good-bye to my mother a long time ago when she still knew who I was but it's still hard to take. I miss her so much.

Temp is 20, more pesky snow falls. Everything gets clean and dry and then here it comes again. Granny says the furnace blower is too loud so I reminded her to be glad she can hear it running. I wanted to buy a new one last summer but she gave me a thumbs down and since this one is working I had no cards to back my play. Now new regulations has caused the price to almost double on a new one. OK I'm Done, must be I'm tired of winter. ....S.J.

 Good morning,

The lights are back on at the Superdome and Fife will be getting some overtime to protect the locals from themselves during the celebration. All is well.  Whistling

Not much going on today. I need some electrical supplies for the added lights above the table and a new saw blade for the miter saw and my circular saw. So I guess I will take a ride to Menard’s.

Ryan, you’re right about that black or chock cherry wood. Not much burn value and a lot of sap in it.

Jack I promise I will practice on keeping my beer in a liquid state. Laugh

You guys have a good day. Yes

more snow today, just an inch or two.  wish it would just SNOW and be done. this inch here and there is anoying.

Ryan.....I am disappointed in you too.  "Annoying" is looking out the window at the crack of dawn, discover that the forecast was correct, that there were two feet of snow dumped on you overnight, and you suddenly realize you forgot to get gas for the snowblower.  And then the wife declares "Ryan, I sure am glad I have you to take care of these things."  Now THAT is annoying.  Scary too. WOW kind of chilly out there today, 14 degrees at 4:00PM Surprise

.......Chief, You want to know what cold is???  Hmm   It is when you take a ride on the Gator around the perimeter of only eight acres and your beer freezes up before your done! That my friend is cold. Bang Head  Bang Head  Not as bad as nose hairs freezing up but right there. I do love the nip,,,,,,, till I get cold.  Tongue Tied Fire is cooking in the fireplace now. Wink.......

I am disappointed in you.  An experienced and ingenious person such as yourself should not have these problems. The beer in in your hand should never freeze up if you are drinking fast enough.  The the extras in the mini 6-pack-sized cooler should not freeze up either since the cooler wards off the cold temperature extremes. Now go back out and practice until you get it right.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Good morning.

Not feeling good this morning. But this time it feels as if I might have a stomach bug or something similar. It doesn't feel like it's anything serious, but I still don't feel great.

Finally have work tonight. Had one heck of a dry period recently. Will be nice to have more money in my pocket.

Konbanwa,

We had a lazy Super Bowl Monday out here.  I took off work today to stay home and watch the game.  It came on at 8:30 AM.  Although I wanted the 49ers to win, I was still pleased with the game’s excitement.  The game ended about 1:00 PM and I didn’t do much else the rest of the day either.

Good joke RT.  The benchwork progress is coming along nicely.

Kev – I think your superelevation plan is a good idea.

Hello all

Well we are in the clouds and got a little dusting of snow. Since we were closed up for a bit I decided to look more into our plumbing issue. We have two sinks in the movable part of the building. The lower sink fills up an under sink sump which has a float system that automatically pumps it out. Down in the non-movable part of the building is another sump connected to the flexible line.

A few weeks ago the under sink unit started leaking and we also found out that the float switch was bad. A week after repairs I found the pump running constantly and more water on the floor. Shut down the system again. Tonight I took apart the lower sump, which to my knowledge has not been apart in 20 yearsIndifferent Wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been since we don't $#!+ above the twist. Lower sump switch and pump were flooded out and shorted and looks to have been that way for some time. Apparently the upper pump has been trying to push water thru like 75' of line and then thru the lower sump. Looks like our mechanic will be going to Grainger this week.

DougDG - I have seen several V8 Corvair cars but never a van yet. Was in a Greenbrier (window van) or a panel van? If it was a panel that's a bit of a rare bird like mine. Less than 50,000 ever built.  Greenbrier production continued until 1965 w/ almost 58,000 units. Next in line is the Rampside w/ 18,000 and the rarest of the forward control Corvairs the Loadside w/ less than 3000 units built.

Hello all

Another quiet night collecting photons, as least the ones that make it thru anyways. We have a system moving thru w/ a lot of cloudcover, no snow though.

DJ - great news about Tyler! That kid deserves a medal!

Buckeye - hope you are ok. I used to have similar fun on Nevada roads getting caught in a sudden snowstorm. Pickup truck w/ 33 X 12.50's (they came w/ the truck) was not a good combo in the winter. Fortunately in Nevada, unless you happen to hit a road sign they put up every few miles,  it wasn't a big deal. Lock the hubs, check your shorts, and get back on the road.

RT - ah the driving of the first spike!

Kev - we have Gila woodpeckers here in AZ. They have quite a bit a character. They love to pound on stovepipes and water heater stacks. Apparently it's some kind of territorial thing, the bigger the noise the bigger sounding the bird. But wow they don't do anyways near that kind of damage!

DougM - the switchman's tower lights up. Three sides are lithograph and one side has red plastic behind a window cutout. They came in several variations both pre and post war.

Did some research and found front shocks for the Corvair hardtop. Most vendors don't even have a listing. The lower mount has a large built in spacer, but it turns out to be the same as early 60's Cadillacs. This way I can get them in town for only $20 apiece rather than mail ordering them at much higher prices. I'm pretty sure these are the original shocks, yep, that means they are 48 years oldIndifferent And yes they are done. Also ordered front sway bar bushings so this will hopefully take care of a somewhat annoying rattle that also came w/ the car.

Found a Marx 7" State of Maine boxcar on the bay for real cheap. My dad's family is from Maine so I've been wanting one of these. Something for the 999 to drag around besides it's caboose.

Since I now have a working transformer up here I will work on a few train related projects. I think I'm going to install the circuit breaker I just got into a project box w/ volt and amp gauges and maybe an indicator light. My local electronics shop has some really nice surplus Simpson gauges that I've been needing an excuse to useBig Smile Then I can hook this in series w/ any of the older transformers I use.

Good evening all,

Great halftime show by Beyonce!!!  Fifedog, it is Baltimore's game to lose.  Spent the day cleaning the house.  Commercials are so-so so far.  At least the Princess was not so prominent and she kept her clothes on for once.  Posting now during the power outage.  Wonder if it is a ratings ploy since the game is a blowout.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

I'm rooting for Ravens. Usually I just choose a team to root for and hope they win.

As far as halftime, I'll watch once they have Aerosmith or Bon Jovi performing, my opinion though.
