RT,

What are the specifics on that 6119 caboose compared to the normal version?  I've got one around here somewhere, and I'm curious now.

evening all not much happening around here back finally feeling better. yesterday a.m. before I went to work I thru a bid on a trains set

But if you look carefully it has a special work caboose

It the version only made in early 1966 it alone is worth more than I paid for whole set and shipping. So I made a good scoop there most over look that caboose but I have found 2 this way in the last 8 years the last one the red shell wouldn't stay on as tab was broke but I still sold it for a fair price. The rest of the stuff is either in good condition to good at best. The engine was customized with a # 9 decal on the nose lol will see how all this works out once I get it in I will decide whats a keep ( the caboose for sure ) and whats a sell.

Have OT tomorrow so a long day tomorrow need to remember to bring my pain and inflammatory pills to take in the afternoon.

won some other items the other night also that I will do some work with as most where weaver including the diesel but its not the drive train version so will see what I will do with it its a nice Burlington SD-40-2 Probably put tmcc in it as it will be a nice addition to my collection. It had QSI board ( proto 1) but that died and was removed it has Williams electronic 6 amp sound board ( hello E-bay I don't like those boards) it has electro couplers but think by MTH so my question is there any difference really in Lionel electro couplers and MTH electro coupler. So can I run them off of Lionel's tmcc board is what I'm asking as I know nothing about MTH electronics.

Temp is 35

The slush this morning kept jamming in the blower chute but it was just too heavy for us to move any other way. I should have sprayed it with silicone before I started. My # 2 son is a painter for a local Dodge dealer, good paint is expensive. If you want cheap you will get get cheap. I spent the afternoon goofing off so I will be ready with banilla for the thingy crew. We had a good chat last night...S.J.

Ray,

I agree with Jack about finding a good bodyshop.  I've seen too many cheap resprays to suggest otherwise.  As soon as I read your post, the 93 Probe at the local yard came to mind.  It is the victim of a cheap respray, and between the poor masking, flaking bright orange paint revealing the original Steel Blue Frost beneath, and massive amount of orange peel texture, I feel sorry for it.  A good respray won't be cheap, but you are paying for the painter's experience/skill.

Good to see you Roy. Smile

Stopped off at the DMV and got my stickers for the wife's car and my bike. I was in and out in 5 min because they were not giving driving test today due to the weather? Hmm

I have been playing out in the snow and BOY,, did I get the Gator stuck in the east ravine. Embarrassed Sure glad I put that winch on her. I had to tie off to two different trees before it got up to where it could pull itself out on it's own.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Laz, like you and Ryan I to have been a scrap yard rat. I worked for Speicher & Gaylords auto wreckers in 1971 and 1972 and in 1996 I partnered with Bill Speicher and Russ Bennett to open up Speicher's truck parts. I have had plenty of time behind the cutting torch. I never had clean fingernails back then. Laugh

V8 Vega, with your experience in restoring cars, where would you suggest I get my 96 Honda Accord repainted?  I'm leary of those one day places or places like the former Earl Sheib.

Ray

Ray........let me open with this admission of fact.  I am pretty anal when it comes to the condition and appearance of the cars I drive.  So right out of the box I have a bias toward the better paint job.

The (former) Earl Scheib and the present Maaco (discount) paint shops are not what I would pick unless I did not excessively care about the finished product (up close).  You get what you pay for.  You spend a little ($300-$500) and that is what you get with one of their advertised paint specials.  It comes down to labor to them.  Any needed or additional body work is usually at your discretion and is ala carte.  They don't do a whole lot of panel and paint prep with their less expensive packages and not enough finish/buffing work after the car is painted to bring up the shine.  And their masking is hit and miss in spots.

I used Maaco (once) back in the early 1970s when I was trying to make one of my $50 "beaters" look halfway decent for a short period of time.  The finish wasn't great out of the box, had dulled appreciably within 6 months, and was falling/chipping off in quarter sized pieces within a year.  Both my son-in-law and his father used Maaco on their cars for some minor collision repairs in the past five years.   And it shows, even my wife can see the difference.  You sight down the side of the car and the finish is dull, especially up against an undamaged panel that was left alone.  And the paint is chipping away on the edges of the hatch of my SIL's SUV.  Then the SIL and his father ask me how I keep my cars looking so good.  Protect the paint and use a better collision shop, but expect to pay for "better."

Your trusted collision/body shop would be my first recommendation for a quality job, but expect to pay $2,000 and up for the whole car repaint......at least that is what I paid when I had my Camaro repainted (no dents or scrapes to be repaired).  But the paint and finish looked factory fresh from the get go, held up very well, and looked new for another 6 years (despite the fact the car was not garaged) until I sold the car.

OEM automobile dealerships also do a credible job also but are usually the high-priced spread.  But they should be able to replicate the quality of the finished product like your collision guy would deliver..

If I had a collectible car (I do) and/or I was going to hang on to a vehicle for a very long time (say 5 more years or more), I would spend the money with my known and trusted collision guy.  That is what I do because I keep and drive my cars to the grave or end of their financially practical and useful life.  The newest car in my fleet is pushing 7 years old.

Hi all!

Still running in stealth mode and little time to post/keep up.

Hope all are well.

I am on track to make it to York in April, but that is still a month and a half away and things seem to change rapidly here.

Have a great day all!

Good morning all,

Went to visit our friend in the extended care home yesterday.  First time we have seen her since she was moved over there.  We had a nice visit and her husband showed up too before we left.  It's a small place and they only care for three patients but seems well run, clean and comfortable.  A nurse came while we were there and checked her vital signs.

No further word yet on our other stroke victim friend.

Running my trains almost daily now with warmer weather here making it comfortable in the garage.  Ran my MTH proto 1 Santa Fe F units yesterday.  They still run good but now and then give out a loud buzzing noise until they get warmed up.  Some kind of electronic grimlin I guess.  I have Lionel, MTH and Williams.  Best runners by far are the Williams.

V8 Vega, with your experience in restoring cars, where would you suggest I get my 96 Honda Accord repainted?  I'm leary of those one day places or places like the former Earl Sheib.

Hi RYAN,

WOW small world.  I use to work a couple of summers in a scrap yard in Hazleton back in the 70s.  Best job I ever had.  Lots o fun running the shear, baler, crane with electro magnet, chicken, loader, and of course cutting steel with a torch.  Loved it and kept me in shape for college football season.  Had a ball picking junk.

We are being hammered again this morning with the storm that was predicted 1-3", when I got up this morning we were at 9" and the snow has picked up again!  Supposed to be done in about one more hour, this really has been a blessing as we desperately need the precip plus this snow is very wet and heavy.  Thank goodness for an ATV w/blade.  May try for pics later, time to go push snow .... again Thumbs Up

The coupler conversions on all the FP7's are done. The front and rear couplers (all center shank Kadee's) are spot-on with the Kadee coupler height gauge. Now I can relax for a while.

Morning all from the lake.  Was not going to do this but CBS nrws just showed a place in IL with a guy blowing snow in his drive.  I thought of KEV and felt a lot of joy.  Especially since he lives so far from.the mainroad.  Well, sunny and 60 here today.

Chief......we N'awtheners are a resilient and hearty bunch who relish in the beauty and serenity of each season.  KEV probably made quick work of the snow with his plow Yesand snowblower, built a fire, cracked open a beer or 6, played with his trains (only one pile up), and took occasional breaks to shoot at varmints, clean up motor oil off his garage floor, peruse grandbaby name booksand just plain goof off

S'utheners WISH they had the weather variability we have and take sunny 60 degree weather for granted, whining and moaning every time they get only a tad of foul weather, at which point they fall apart. WhistlingLaugh

Thanks Jack Smile

Hi Guys,

Beautiful day on the North Bluff.

Cloudy 32 degrees with very light snow. Kind of like Jon,, a bit disappointed in the big storm Rocky,,, only left us about 4"to 5" of the white stuff and we need all the wet we can get. It just keeps missing us. DougM is getting much more. I only had to make one pass on the lane yesterday but I did get up today at 4:30 AM and made a pass up the lane to make sure there were no drifts so the wife could go to work,,Whistling then I went back to bed.. Zzz

Chief, It warms my heart that I can make you feel joy.. Jack just about nailed it as to what I did but no snowblower work; I just shoveled it off the walk. Jack also forgot to mention that after the snow the wife and I took a long Gator ride all through the woods to enjoy the beauty of the freshly fallen snow.

Jim after thinking about that 4:10 gear, I had forgot you have a OD gear in that trans so you may be better off than I thought.

This is for you Chief.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Rainy Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Folks in the colder locales West and North of me today will see another significant snow event (up to 12") while the Atlantic coastline (me) will only see rain, continuing 40 degree temps, and a lot of snow melt.

I read about the drought conditions Roy and Jon continue to struggle with into 2013 and wish we (up my way) could loan them some of our precipitation. Our reservoirs are full and at the rate we have been going the ground water aquifers are probably loaded as well.  Excess freshwater from snow and rain just runs off into the brooks, rivers, and streams and eventually winds up wasted when it all reaches the ocean.

Maybe I am expecting too much.  But the local "care and rehabilitation" center my son-in-law's terminally ill Aunt was moved to this past Monday (from home) disappoints me.  The family had no choice.  Their home was no longer a viable option moving forward.  Family members were overwhelmed.  And even with daily home health care offerings and social services assistance, Auntie needed 24/7 care, something they simply could not provide.

The "care and rehabilitation" center's (sales and marketing) web site covers all of the bases:  extensive health care and social services offered, awards, the results of mandatory oversight reviews, and the like.  What one reads does not necessarily match up with what one observes first hand during a visit. This is not the place I would want to reside.

You guys with long term health care insurance policies.....hang on to them.  Auntie didn't have any.  Please say a prayer for my SIL's Aunt.  Her world just got a little bit darker for the moment.  Angel

On Tuesday I offered to do some legwork (literally) and help the SIL and his dad (Auntie's brother) map out another viable strategy/location for Auntie but have heard nothing back yet.  But I will understand and respect if they choose to keep this and all of the related matters mostly on the private side.  Life is what happens when you are busy doing other things.

Later, gang.

Jack

Laz, Good morning.  I get up your way to East Earl to the Shady Maple Buffet once a month or so, been to Barry's a good bit. Actually, I think I am confusing you with Millersville.

I have to do my registration for York. Never been there yet. been meaning to.

assuming I get it done, we'll meet up there.

Ryan

And BTW, I have never met Sid. but I have a funny story about his mother and Aunt.  I own a scrap yard. its PA law, that you must provide valid photo ID to sell scrap metal.  His mother and Aunt came in and didn't have there ID with them.

So she says to me, well I'm Sid Breams Mother........   do I really need ID?

and not even thinking (they are a very religous family) I said I don't give a ------------- who you are you need ID!   And the word I used wasnt the one that sounds like the things beaver s make.

Aloha. Well, I survived last night. Ended class early and was able to dig out the van - keeping a shovel in the back helps... then clear most of the driveway - well, just enough to get the usual 2 foot wall'o snow at the end by the plows. Wasn't too bad. I could even catch the TARDIS last night!

Jack, thanks for the headlamp cover cleaning link. Even if it fades, it's better than it is now. I love that I can access everything in this old van. I enjoy following Maximus' achievements on FB

Nice shout-out to our Mike C on another thread by Roger Carp about his 'Cheap Classics' articles. I've saved a few of them before getting to 'know' Mike on the Pot.

JimFish, Great to hear from you. Hope the grands are doing well.

Joe, I think one of McD's gifts is to make everything taste the same no matter where in the world you happen to visit one. I enjoyed the world's busiest which was allegedly in Hong Kong.  Other francises like  KFC and Pizza Hut can have some really weird and wonderful local variants on their offerings. I recall salad-dressing-pizza and not-quite-chicken...

Good morning. It's 41° with 94% humidity. Mostly cloudy now clearing to partly cloudy later. The high will be 65°.

Today I'm working on the FP7's. The work is easy but a bit time consuming. I'm cutting factory coupler mount off the rear of the shell and removing a predetermined amount of plastic along with it. I'm then mounting a Kadee #242 draft gear box with a #148 coupler in that location. I've already done two this morning. That leaves two more yet to be done. Below are before and after photos from the same loco. The top one is before the conversion, the bottom one obviously is after.

The only tricky part is cutting the right amount off the Kadee coupler box so it clears the rear truck. A self tapping screw is then used to hold the box and coupler in place. And yes, I know Kadee calls for a #34 coupler for the rear of the Atlas/Roco FP7 but doesn't tell you how to get rid of the flop. I'm putting a center shank coupler at the proper height and doing away with the flop.

The only other plans for today are to clean up the layout a bit more.

I woke up to a gray, rainy day; however, it was sunny by the time the workday ended.  I am not doing any physical training this week to ensure my body receives adequate rest although I feel fine.  I may go for a short run with the two older kids this Saturday.  I just found out about a 5K Zombie mud run taking place on one of the Navy bases in April.  That should be fun.

Thanks again for the marathon congrats.  I know running a marathon may seem like a daunting task to most people (it did to me once too), but it is surprising how many people could actually run one with proper training and effort.  I saw people finish this marathon who were mentally challenged, blind, and even wearing a prosthetic leg.  Seeing those folks during the race was very inspirational for me.  Maybe we can get the TCA to hold a marathon during York. Surprise

Jack – The Bronx Bombers don’t have to move too fast to beat those bums from Boston.   And I’m feeling fine and have no more soreness.  I appreciate your lack of concern. Wink

Ryan – Fortunately, the Japanese enjoy McDonald’s very much and there are plenty of them here.  I think McDonald’s is great in the States, but somehow the Japanese make it even better.  I just found out there is a Krispy Kreme closer to where I live – that is going to kill my waistline.

Laz – Yeah, it took me over 20 minutes to cross the starting line so I know how she felt.  The plus side to all those people being there is you never feel alone.  I think I will try to run all the major marathons in the world; that means I have five left to do: Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, and New York.

JohnLaugh I was hoping it would have.

Ray – I’m happy we’re not picking up Damon again.  We don’t need any more age.

Jim SP – It’s nice to see you again.  I’m glad you’re doing well.

I hope everyone stays safe in all the snowstorms.  I’ll be praying for all of us in need.

Sayonara,

Joe
