Hello all

Made it off the mountain on Wednesday. Some entertainment going down, but not too bad. I ended up being up over 24 hrs Wed. due to the fact that I took a dead computer back for the boss to fix (ended up being more than just a power supply). Hard to get to sleep at the house during the day.

Got up Thurs after crashing out a while and cleaned the bathroom. After another week w/ 5 guys using it (6 w/ me) it was getting a bit 'fuzzy'. Almost to the point where you need to go into 'helicopter mode' where you just come in to a hoverSurprise

Will take my friend's Dawoo head to the machine shop today and see if it is salvageable. Then pay rent after the cactus wren takes a dump in my account.

Good morning. Shoulders STILL hurt from Wensday.

Other than work, nothing much going on this evening. Will likely work on the 2020 more or get something for the layout done.

Hello all

TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cloudy 30 this AM. Freezing rain /mix predicted for the Seafood Buffet this PM. That will probably put a hurting on attendance. We'll see. Last week was only 580.

Not much else going on. Went and got a ton of coal last evening. Need to get that in the basement tomorrow. Also I need to go get a new hot water heater and put it in. Maybe Sunday after Mass.

SS fund is calling. May be back tonight.

Prayers for those in need

Good Mornin' Y'all From Crystal Clear And Mid 20s Taxachusetts,

Weather misforecasters are in their glory.  Winter storm warnings non-stop.  With snow approaching from points West, and expected accumulations 6" to 8" North and West of Boston up to 12" in NH and Maine, they would have us believing the sky is falling.

This is New England!!  It is Winter!! Snow is normal!!  Cold is normal!!  If this were Alaska, the weather people would be forecasting "a dusting."  With all of the AWD and 4WD vehicles now on the roads, and with FWD cars making up most of the rest (except for JimmyT and V8Dennis), why all the fuss?  We've got traction control, stability control, and tires that are far superior to just what was available a decade ago.

Enough already!!  BTW......since the storm arrives late tomorrow afternoon, the grocery stores will be chaos with folks stocking up on enough food and Beer to last until July 4.  Contrary to old school theory, beer does have a shelf life, even when kept refrigerated post purchase.  Question is, what do these folks do with all of this overpurchased stuff they went overboard buying just two weeks ago?

This being said, in front of my better half I will just agree with the "stay at home" warnings insofar as they will get me what I want from the wifey......agreement that we should stay safe and warm at home this weekend instead of gallavanting up to Maine and New Hampshire.  Snowblowing, shovelling, and running trains. Smile, Wink & Grin

Later, gang.

Between the weather (our 30" snowfall two weeks ago and the two snow events since then) and family matters previously discussed, I neglected to mention that Pam and I ventured South to Taunton MA. for canine obedience trials a couple of weeks back.  Pam entered Maximus in two advanced trials, finished in fourth place the first day and in first place the second day to earn their "Advanced" title.  This was his third obedience title!! Yeah

Expert is the next level !!!!! Thumbs UpDrinks

It is really difficuly for me to keep up with all of the goings-on here on the POT.  We are averaging 38 posts a day and I feel uncomfortable not keeping up, especially on important matters such as health, family, and life's challenges.

Dennis......how on earth you are keeping all of the balls in the air, juggling family and work, is beyond me.  I was glad to read that your "herd" is hale and hearty and that your new blassed additions are adjusting to you.Thumbs UpWhistling

Spanky.........my prayers continue for your little Tyler as he continues to move forward and resume a child's life, one that has all of the medical challenges in the rear view mirror. Thumbs UpAngel

BOC........how do you get that white blood count back up?  Hope you are gaining back a few lbs. and that your pants are fitting a bit snugger. Thumbs UpAngel

HudsonJohn......prayers continue for your Mom.  It sounds like everything is moving in the right direction with her treatments now coming every three weeks instead of weekly.  Thumbs UpAngel

Jeffrey........methinks you swapped out blood and urine samples to escape a smack down from your Doc.Thumbs UpAngel

RaySP......I hope that the elderly (90+) woman from your church group is doing OK.  Was thinking of her during this week's family matters here.  Then there is your buddy's wife in the nursing home. It is of little consolation as we get up here in years that we find ourselves more and more surrounded by this stuff and get to thinking about our own mortality. Angel

RT.........hope you are feeling better.  Not much coming from you the past few days.  How is the layout coming along? Angel

MikeC.....I was glad to read your daughter continues to make progress post op.  Hope she is taking it slow and steady.  Surgery and anesthesia can knock the snot out of you energy-wise for months, something the younger sometimes don't realize. Thumbs UpAngel

Ryan........you need to borrow HudsonJohn's cat Chester and his dog Mack to hunt down and chase off that big cat or bear.  Once they have it trapped up in a tree, you can dispatch the wifey with some artilley to finish it off, drag it back to the house, and make you a nice rug for the train room.WhistlingLaugh

DougM......I mandated that the son order some more Lou Malnati's pizzas because he ate up all of mine.  Should have him arrested for felony theft. Smile, Wink & Grin

FIFE........re completing your taxes, after dodging that higher tax bracket, I am curious how much voluntary and additional $$$$ you plan to donate to the U.S. Treasury.  I am pondering the same question.Laugh

SubmmBob........it really is funny reading about your snowfall, expressed in feet instead of inches.  We are wimps!!!  Wink

Banks........I would be interested in your approach to a new hot water tank.  I have been mulling over going electric/tankless/on demand.  The expense of heating hot water for me is draining the wallet 24/7/365.  I have a 40 gallon Amtrol Boiler Mate Classic Series.  It is set up as its own zone on my oil-burning furnace.  For the six months ending each October where the furnace is just heating hot water, I go through about 180 gallons of fuel oil.  That's about $800 just to heat hot water for six months, or $4.38 per day!!!!  The Amtrol was expensive but came highly recommended by my plumber and my heating oil guy for a number of reasons.  First was the lifetime warranty on the tank and liner (my 4th hot water tank in 25 years).  The second was the self-contained internal insulation factor where the idle tank only loses 2 degrees per hour in my unheated basement during the Winter.  I keep the thermostat set at 134 degrees which is 14 lower than recommended for the dishwasher water temps, but the dishwasher has an electric heating element to make up the difference. The recovery rate is fast because the furnace with it's high BTU output is heating the water.  Boiler set to 180 degrees.   I know what the real problem is........"someone" in the house uses too much hot water, taking long 15+ minute showers, shaving in there, and who knows what else.  And it ain't the dog or my son or me.  May be the person whose shower drain coughed up two fistfuls of blonde hair yesterday.  I don't need CSI to reach any conclusions here.  Bang Head

JimmyT......I was going to warn you against changing out your differential gears to lower ratios.  Then I realized I faced the same decision many moons ago when I had the motor rebuilt in my 1969 Corvette.  I stuck with Chevy 3:55s.  The higher highway rpm and associated racket, albeit a tad high, was somewhat tolerable.  Then again, I did a lot of highway driving with road trips all over the place whereas you seem to confine your driving to local cruising..  With the 3:55s I could still smoke the P245 tires into oblivion from a stoplight, hit 140+ top end, and still top 19 mpg highway which for the early 1970s was considered economical, especially for a "muscle" car.

DougM and KEV........a lot of coverage on the Weather Channel right now with the Chicago snows.  Lake Shore Drive looks unaffected.  They even appear to have the snow cleared from the bike/running paths along the lake front.  BTW.......I am really enjoying youse guyz' layout progress pictures and videos.Thumbs Up

KEV........if you can pull him away from the fireplace, send George the cat out to join forces with John's Chester and Mack to help Ryan eradicate some of the large predators lurking in his woods.  Could it be that your wife is inheriting your "new" truck soon while you inherit the oil leak in hers? Whistling

Mitch.........IMHO, now is the perfect time to make "the move" as you are doing.  The interest rates will never be lower in our lifetimes!Thumbs Up  Now if the U.S. Congress and Senate will just keep their fingers off the mortgage interest tax deduction......  Ryan.....get moving on your empire expansion plans!!!!!

Jon.......was glad to see on the news that the Ioway snows will help mitigate some of your precipitation shortfall.Thumbs Up

Chief.....I have not been reading any updates from you regarding your new exercise regime and diet? WhistlingLaugh

Brutus......a four day weekend for you?  Does this mean you will be back down in your lower level wrapping things up?  I didn't think so.  WhistlingLaugh

V8Dennis........57/39 is NOT cold.  Glad to hear that things with the Del Sol are moving forward.  You need to take a road trip soon. Thumbs Up

8N......sounds like you got 12" of what I am getting.  I would not feel comfortable leaving my car at work.  The snowplows will bury your car and create 4 X the work digging it out. Surprise

JoeyD......t-minus 2 days until your post-marathon paralysis on Sunday.  Hope you are in a condition to at least study for your final exam.  You may have to crawl to your car to get there.  Then you just have one more class to wrap things up!!!! Thumbs Up Smile, Wink & Grin

Jake.......don't do what the rest of us have done.  Overlift now just to see what we can do and then visit the orthopedic surgeon later for a rotator cuff injury consultation.  Good luck on the work with your 2020.  My buddy's 671 and his trains (in boxes) have taken up permanent residence here because he has no place to store them nor a layout to run them.  I keep the 671 exercised for him, don't even charge him a storage or train "day care" fee.  SurpriseWink

I have cleaned the drifts on the lane and did the sidewalks. Done. Doug, how much did you get?  Hmm

Car dealer just called. The wife’s car needs new valve covers and gaskets,, GM upgrade that they don’t tell you about or back up so it is a $400.00 job with an oil change. Bang Head Well I guess it could have been worse. It least now she can run off some of those $800.00 tires I just had put on it. Tongue Tied

I found the Tardis last night and we had a good ride. Smile

John, I tried to PM Bo but when you go to his profile there is no option for that? Confused

Good morning. It's 51° with 92% humidity and there's a slight possibility of rain. The high will be 62°.

Today will involve a little more work on the layout I think. I also intend to look at the broken truck I took out of the FP7 last night. Apart from the broken off retaining tabs there's nothing wrong with it mechanically. Maybe I can drill into what's left of the tabs and glue in something to do the job the tabs did. What do I have to lose? A broken truck? Some time? Hey, free time was made to waste. Besides which, this could be fun.

Temp is 27, snow started about 0730 but seems to be moving through here pretty fast. Looks like a quick 2 inches. Daughter has a cold so she stayed home from work which means granny did not have to go out this morning. She is already busy cleaning, oh how she loves to clean. No need for either of us to travel out today...Friday has arrived again, the next one will be in March, enjoy....S.J.

Good morning all,  Sunny weather is back, thankfully and it is cool and pleasant today.  Went out for dinner last night with the family.  Nice break from cooking.

Jack, our 90 year old friend/stroke victim, has been moved now to a rehablitation hospital and is getting three hours of theraphy per day.  She is paralysed on the right side but is able to speak a little better now per her family.  Still no visitors allowed yet. They have connected a feeding tube directly to her abdomen so they eleimanted the necessity to go through the nostril.  Glad she got rid of that.  Must be awful.  Our other friend is still in the assisted living/nursing facility.  We need to visit her.  It is difficult to talk to her on the phone because her voice is so weak.  Saw her husband at the drug store yesterday.  He looks bad.  Under a lot of stress and had just had a tooth pulled  to top it off.  He said he spent one night with one of his son's near the ocean which was very good for him.

Jack, I agree about hearing more about these kinds of problems the older we get.  We have to make a decision to keep our long term care health insurance or to drop it.  It is very expensive but the cost of long term care is very high too.  So we are between a rock and a hard place.  My wife's part is more expensive than mine because she is a little older than me.  Neither one of us have any relatives except our two sons living near us.  The rest are all on the East Coast.  The amount of money we have already plowed into this insurance feels like flushing it down the toilet if we let it lapse.  It has no cash value either.  The time to cancel it was several years ago.  Now with our age, it seems more probable that we might need it.  The deadline for renewal is just a few weeks from now.  If I had put the money that we paid into this in an investment, I would probably be ahead of the game now but hindsight is 20/20.  I am waiting for my next doctor visit to help make this decision. Prayers for your aunt and grandkids.

later,

Ray

Hello all

Well we received a go on the cylinder from my friend's Daewoo from the machine shop. They are going to surface it and clean it. My friend is chasing down the head set w/ bolts and a timing belt. Prob. will start re-assembly next time I am down from the mountain. For less than $150 in parts and a couple of pizzas he should be back on the road. I worry about him riding his motorcycle all the time.

Weather is looking better for the weekend. We had snow in town here Wed. and Thurs. May get a chance to paint the bicycle frame this weekend.

Got a new bathmat from Target last night. Old one went into the trash after I picked it up with the end of the broomstickIck! We are no longer it "helicopter" mode for the time beingWink

Time to pay rent. The cactus wren (AZ state bird) took a dump on schedule.

Seems we may have got good news on the wife’s car.  Yes They called to say it was done so I went to the bank and got the $400.00. When I got to the dealer they told me that the camshaft seals were leaking too. So they replaced those. The neat thing about it is they think those will be covered under the engine warranty but the valve cover gaskets are not. But to replace the camshaft seals you have to change the valve cover gaskets so they would then be covered.  Whistling  So if it goes through it will all be covered.  Whistling If not well I have to pay but it will be $100.00 less than they quoted me in the first place. All I had to pay for so far was an oil change. Smile

If this works and Katie's car has not hit the 5 year mark yet we are going to do same to it. Smile, Wink & Grin I got to call in her VIN to see.

I worked on the broken Atlas truck this morning. I ground off what was left of the retainer tabs that would have held it onto the frame. I left the location rough so that glue can hold to it. I put the truck in place in the GP40 frame then super glued a piece of ns rail to it in the location where one of the retaining tabs were. It's now enough to keep the truck in place. The next item on the list for the GP40 is to replace the motor. The one in it runs but sounds like it's grinding itself to pieces.

Your post about Sandra's vehicle made me thing of GM's wonderful 3800 V6 that has the plastic intake plenum that distorts by design and creates oil and Dexcool shakes.Angry  Had that happen to several family members.

Jack,

I've talked to several Mustang owners and two speed shops, and they all tell me to just go 4.10 and be done with it.  I'll probably go with shop #1 since they quoted me $550 out the door, while shop #2 quoted $330 for parts and 2.5 - 4+ hours at $100/hour.  If I swap the entire axle for a new 3.73 axle myself, I'm looking at $1,425 for the axle.Indifferent

I need to clean the layout off, but I need to make shelves first.  That will need to wait until spring since I can't fit the table saw in the garage right now.Whistling

.........after a month long fiasco, our wall paper sorta arived, they failed to mention they were priced / order as single rolls and shipped and advertised as double rolls, so we have half of it.   looks like another three weeks for the rest.........

A husband and wife wallpapering together.....hmmmmmm.  A perfect setting for a made for TV murder mystery.  Sounds like you got a three week stay of execution, and more time for important stuff to play with your trains. Thumbs UpSmile, Wink & Grin

Jim........what kind of RPM do you run at 65mph now?  What would you be running @65mph with each of the ratios you are thinking about?  Good thing to know before you decide.  Speed shops will know that stuff.

Aloha. Nice grey day - got maybe 3 inches of snow. Not too bad. The youngest was very sick yesterday - slept all day between getting sick. He's more himself today but not going to school. I'll drop over later to pick up his homework for the weekend. Nice TARDIS ride last night. Hope to tinker more with the layout this weekend.

Jack, I'm sorry you can't get natural gas instead of the fuel oil. My 2 cents - don't get a tankless water system - my neighbors have them - one is very knowledgable about plumbing but boy, are they ever fiddly. There is always something wrong with them. And the water isn't as hot as you get from a tank.  We got the biggest tank we could afford when I last replaced it - figuring with three kids and a bride who love loooong showers -- and went on a budget plan with our nat. gas provider and it's worked out.

Ray,  I would renew the insurance. I have friends who have and do not have it - the ones who have it and need it are happy - the ones who need it and cancelled it are miserable.

Jack,

With the 3.31, I think 65 MPH is somewhere around 1800 RPM.  3.73 would be 2034 RPM while 4.10 would be 2235 RPM based on the charts on the vendor's site.  The most important thing to me is that I get someone that knows what they're doing and stands behind their work at a fair price.

Ohayƍ,

I just finished breakfast with the youngest child.  It’s sunny and brisk this morning, which will make today’s drive to Tokyo more enjoyable.  We’re spending two nights in Tokyo so it will be easier for me to get to and from the marathon tomorrow.  We’re planning to leave in a few hours so I should get going.

Lionel’s New RTR Catalog: Wow, I am very happy with these offerings.  I was excited to see all the remote operated trains available; I believe this is a very smart decision by Lionel.   However, the Subway Series set definitely appeals to me, as does the Yankees passenger set.  My oldest brother would definitely enjoy the Phillies train.  I think I need to start my Christmas list early this year as I have many wants from this catalog.  Oh, the Peanuts psychiatric stand with Lucy is cool too.

Laz – Thanks.  I may even pay a visit to Barry’s while I’m in PA; I believe that’s about a 90-minute drive from my parent’s house.

Jack – I’ll take the subway or local train back to the hotel after the marathon; hopefully I won’t need any assistance.  I finished the last paper for this class last night.  I can now enjoy a week off from school before starting the final class.  Then I’ll be out in VT in June for a short residency and graduation.

Kev - I wish I wasn’t able to open my sunroof already.  I’m not ready for winter to end.  That’s great news about the car.

SP Ray – Based on the info you provided, you should stick with the long-term insurance.  If you don’t keep it and need long-term care, the care will eat away any savings you both have.  The other option you could face is the care you receive will be provided by the State – not the best.

Sayonara,

Joe

Don't you just HATE when things turn out like this?  Now you have $400 in cash to spend on your trains expansion wife.Whistling
