Aloha. TGIF the 13th. I've taken the day off to celebrate my bride's birthday.  Dennis, my son's birthday is tomorrow too - something else he shares with your son (though he's turning 18 - sigh). Happy birthday to them both! Then my anniversary is next week. Expensive month! Smile  Sad story here overnight - big stable fire killed 15 horses just a town away.

Nice ride on the Tardis with Brutus, SJ and Charlie . I can feel the York excitement. Good news on Char's numbers, Brutus.  Ray, Nevada was damaged and grounded near the entrance to Pearl Harbor. The story of the recovery and reconstruction of the battleships there is very interesting.  By D-Day, she was unrecognizable from her 1941 self. Praying for your diagnosis, RT. I got one too. I gotta see a surgeon about taking out some skin cancer - supposedly not the kill-me kind...

Been sitting with the wife in shock, watching extensive coverage of the local news.  Forty miles North of us in Greenland NH, a town we drive through very often, police officers this evening were serving a warrant at a residence.........five officers shot, one dead, and the latter was the police chief just 8 days from retirement.  The gunman is still holed up in the house, possibly with a hostage.

Jack

Chief.....update, the warrant was being served by a drug task force made of officers from the surrounding local towns, being served on a man who was "well known" to local law enforcement and has been previously convicted on drug charges.  The police re-entered the house overnight and found the suspect and also an unknown woman dead, both from gunshot wounds, apparent murder/suicide or double suicide.  Police Chief Maloney leaves behind a wife, children, and grandchildren.  Of the four wounded officers, two were treated and released from the hospital but two are in critical condition.

Stating the obvious, your Frankie is in harms way every minute of every day, protecting all whom he serves.

While my religion espouses one thing, my heart and my mind right now are saying quite the opposite.  How do you explain the senseless taking of a life?  What can one say to the bereaved family at the loss of a husband, father, and grandfather?  Whatever our safety guys are getting paid, police and fire, it isn't enough.

Jack

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 60s.  Semi-quiet night last night.  Spent hour on phone with son-in-law.  Not too sure anything was accomplished or that it could have been.  Maybe a good weekend for AJ's team and Sarah's as the Chevvies are all changing their engines and starting 10 places back.  Will have to see how this all plays out.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good morning. It's 64° and partly cloudy. The high will be 82°.

Well after my weight lifting exercises yesterday (lifting the front of the tractor) my arms still ache a bit this morning. I have no particular plans for today. Right now I'm watching my Bachmann GP38-2 lead my Atlas SD27J around by the nose.

Had a somewhat interesting turnout issue this morning. The points wouldn't move over completely resulting in one derailment after another. A close inspection revealed a bit of ballast had gotten caught between the point rail and the stock rail. Removing the offending debris solved the problem. I guess I can count that as a resolved Friday the 13th issue. Should I attempt anything technical today or will that result in one disaster after another? I think I'll just run some trains and watch some TV today. That should be safe enough.

Mornin' Fellas

Well since it has been a month I guess I can share my good news. In 5 weeks I have lost 11lbs! Only 29 to go! Big Smile Have to go in for bloodwork tomorrow and a followup Dr visit next Thursday. BP has been 150/100 for a couple weeks and they put me on some meds to help bring it down. TheQ told me to stop taking one of my antihystamins (on Singulair and Zyzal) as they can raise BP. Stopped the Zyzal last night, did OK.

Need to get the lawn fertilized this weekend (actually weed & feed), mow the lawn, take out some under brush that has been driving me nuts while mowing. Also need to wash the cars and rotate the tires on them as well, maybe do an oil change on TheQ's Murano... Looks like the trainroom isn't going to see any action this weekend. Sad

Morning all.  Chilly but the warm Southern air is about to hit.  Will drive the Yankee cold away. CoolYes

Prayer for NH.  Sad news when folks do senceless killing.  Even worse when it is law enforcement that is  killed.

Brent, go man go!!!! Yes

Waiting for lake neighbor to come by and go to BoJangles for breakfast.  Then to Sam's.  Back and then to lunch meeting.

Have a good one.  [Friday 13th is always a good luck day for me.  Already as balanced check book and found nice error in my favor Big Smile]

Can only pray for their healing.  Angel

Nice picture Dennis. Hope you get him home soon.

Jeffery, take it easy today. I am taking the day off. Can’t seem to shake the retirement thingy.

88 Nice job on losing the weight. Something I should do. I checked yesterday and I am at 193lb. I would like to be 170lb.

Well got to do some pre-work before I see my lawyer tomorrow to update our wills. Been 14 years, long over due.

Have a great Friday the 13th.

Happy Friday the 13th

42 with bright sun, 60s later. Talk about senseless killings, Detroit has them every day, it's like the wild west in there. Millions spent on the Detroit waterfront while the rest of the city turns into a wasteland of burned out house's and tumbleweeds. Not to even mention the 911 calls that go unanswered for hours. Not much going on today except our Friday meal out. A very busy weekend coming up though..S.J.

Well, I decided it was time to abandon a turnout in place and instead of taking up the ballast and pulling up the entire turnout and replacing it with a piece of straight track then laying in new ballast I decided to have a bit of fun. I left the turnout (Bachmann #5 that has never worked properly) right where it was. I used my Dremel to make a few strategic cuts in the rails then used a pair of pliers to remove the pieces of rails curving to the diverging track then pulled up the points and all but one of the guard rails. Last thing to come up was the metal frog. I used the Dremel to cut under the ends of straight rail that were left to make room for rail joiners then took a piece of straight rail with a joiner already on it and slipped the joiner onto the straight rail at one end then holding the rail beside the other piece of straight rail determined where it had to be cut so it'd fit the gap then cut it. Slipped a joiner on the newly cut end so the joiner was pushed all the way on, positioned the rail end so it met the end of the existing rail and pushed the joiner forward to join the two pieces of rail. I used my NMRA gauge to get the rails in gauge and while holding the new rail in place I pump a line of super glue under the rail and held the rail in place for a few minutes while the glue set. At 10:30 the glue was dry and I ran two locos pulling fourteen cars over the newly worked area and there were no problems. That part of the track now has a unique look to it. The spur will be abandoned in place and the engine house it goes into will be removed.

Well here is a shot of my newest addition to the layout.

A thirsty Beep and Plymouth switcher wait on the guys to fuel them up.

It is a K-Line K22 diesel fueling station I have done some painting to for better effect. I had to paint the inside and outside of the shed because it is white plastic and the light would shine through it and painted faces, hands and shoes on the men so they did not look like guys from Blue Man Group.

Later,

Kev.

Good afternoon everyone.  Turned into an exciting morning.  Got to help save a life...can't get into details, but it was nice to end the week on such a note.

Thanks for the kind thoughts regarding our son.  Yeah, we can hardly wait, but it is out of our control.

RT, pray for healing.

Regarding the killing of the police chief in NH, that is really sad.  So many questions, so few answers.  One can easily question why such a dirt bag was not behind bars, but we all know that if we toughened the laws, there would be folks jumping up and down about the "rights" of these poor, misunderstood souls.  I too would have a solution, but would get in trouble if I posted it.

Was thinking over these past few days that Bob has shared his photos of the Iowa.....it really would have been great if these could have been shared with NavyJack.  While I never met him in person, he became a warm personality here.  It was great to see the outpouring of compassion by the folks here on this forum and those on the others.  There are some bad eggs, but for the vast majority, train folks are pretty good folk.

Well, I have to get going.  Pray that each of you has a great weekend.
Dennis

Thumbs DownThat should make Ray, John, JoeyD, and the Chief happy.Bang Head  At least the Boston Bruins won their playoff opener last nightThumbs Up and the Celtics are looking like the real deal over their past 15 games, especially after convincingly beating Miami on Miami's home court the other night.Thumbs Up  Who cares about LaBron James?  I'm thinking at the end it will be DougM and Kev's Chicago Bulls as the team to beat.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE SEND SOME RAIN MY WAY?!? Bang Head

DougM........prayers now for both of your upcoming procedures.  Either or both can be daunting. Angel

MikeC.......don't feel bad.  I have to have another fruitless chat with my sister later.  She is going to ask me for advice.  Like always, she will agree with everything I suggest, thank me profusely after taking 10 pages of notes, hang up, and then do nothing.  Reminds me of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. KEV.......really enjoyed the pics of your fueling station.  Looks really sharp.Thumbs Up  Re your updated will and your trains......it's spelled R-I-5-2.........Laugh

Not much new news here about the Greenland NH shooting of the 5 police officers last night.  The scuttlebut I heard very early this morning from a police officer friend was that the nutcase used an AK47, he's checking on that.  Yes, the dirtbag has been in constant trouble in the past, was visited all too frequently at his home in the past by the local police, drugs (steroids) and illegal firearms charges, assault, domestic battery.........and two of the cases in court were coming up in a couple of months.  And he was still walking the street despite all the police did to keep him under wraps.  Today we got news from Chicopee MA 100 miles West of me that a State Police officer was shot.  SJ is dead right about Detroit, Chicago in some respects not much better.  A sad state of affairs.

Bless you guys, and prayers for anyone I missed.

Later, gang.

Good afternoon all,

Been raining off and on most of the day.  Cooked up a pot of ham and beans today with left over ham bone.  Followed directions on package but it came out more like soup than beans.  Probably too much water but it was good.  Just can't eat too much at one sitting or you might launch yourself into space.  Beano is a must have before eating this stuff.  I used a medley of all kinds of beans together but if it comes out like mush what difference does it make.  Next time I will go back to plain old Navy beans.

Being bombarded with all kinds of E mails and phone calls that are politcal.  I guess we are in for this until November.  Got one today that said bridge contract was awarded to a Chinese contractor after all the redirect we have heard about jobs first in America.  I would like to hear both sides of the story.  I hope the job went no bid before they gave it to a foreign contractor.  This story was put out on ABC by Diane Sawyer.

York must be coming up soon unless they already had it.  I used to go a lot but haven't been now for over 10 years.  Too far, I'm too old to travel much and I really don't need to buy anymore trains there.  I can get all I want anywhere.  I miss the social aspect though.

Jeffrey, glad you survived the latest battle with the tractor. You don't need that.

later,

Ray

A Take On Music Theory...

Early one day, a C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we
don't serve minors." So the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open
fifth between them.

After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F
comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.
Later, a D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse
me. I'll just be a second." Then an A comes into the bar, but the bartender
is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and
exclaims, "Get out now. You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar
tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a
3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a
nice corporate job until his company downsized) says, "You're looking sharp
tonight, come on in! This could be a major development." This proves to be
the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands
there au natural.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest.
The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the
diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without Coda at
an upscale correctional facility.

On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even
accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had tenor so patrons,
with the soprano out in the bathroom, and everything has become alto much
treble, he needs a rest, and closes the bar.WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Jeffrey, glad you survived the latest battle with the tractor. You don't need that.

True as that is it's the one that's easiest for me to use as all the controls can be operated by hand, including the brake and the drive. My fathers Yardman is very hard for me to put in reverse as it has a foot pedal for that. It must be pushed straight down with the right foot. Guess what I can't do with my right foot. He also has the seat set and tacked in place for him and his legs are longer than mine. I'm like a little kid riding on the very edge of the seat just to reach the drive pedal and I'm 5' 7.5" with my right foot firm on the ground. If I straighten my left leg that goes to 5' 10.4" and there's almost 3" of daylight between my right foot and the ground. Remember the movie Police Academy? Bubba Smith driving a Honda Civic CVCC from the back seat? You get the idea.

60 now

Well did you all survive the 13th? I had Almond Chicken this afternoon and I'm still full. A lot of food for $5.25. We ran a few errands and I bought some stuff that's suppose to break down the tree stump so it will burn. I have used this kind of thing in the past and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I'll let you know in about 6 weeks. Granny's watching the Red Wings game and I will wait for the thingy crew..S.J..

Wings just won 3/2, granny is happy now.

Hello all,

This evening Mrs & I had  a nice dinner out and went to the AT&T store & got her a new cell phone.

Should I be able to join the York gang would it be appropriate to wear a back-back to carry a couple  bottles of water and purchases? I'm still planning on making the trip but I'm not committed 'till I get on the PA Turnpike at Breezwood next Thursday after w**k.

Getting the camper de-winterized is on the list of things to do this weekend.

Hope she lets me use a coupon for her dinner. Wink

Sounds like something I might do  Wink

Off to join Mrs in bed

Prayers for those in need

Wow Blown Cylinder, that is the kind of story I would have expected from Jon, the Iowa horn blower!

Was a good evening.  Took kids to violin, then to a old style burger place called Checkers.  First time to this one and everyone enjoyed it.  Followed up with a trip to get ice cream to celebrate Andrew's birthday.

Going to hit the sheets as I have an early morning for a bible study.  It will be at a local plantation which is always great.  One thing we are doing is getting men into accountability groups.  The world is a tough place and it is a good thing to have help keeping us on the right path.

I got an email from the lady who is taking care of our son.  They will be celebrating his birthday on Monday.  I hope to get some updated photos to share then.  Brent, thanks for the kind words.  You too are blessed with a darling little one.

Have a blessed night

Dennis

Time for me to call it a night. I got a little layout work done even if it was just ripping the diverging route rails and points out of a turnout and putting in a piece of straight rail to make it a piece of straight track with exceptionally wide ties. I'm currently watching an F3 A/B set (Proto 1000 shells on Stewart drives) pull a train around the layout. The A unit has a Mashima motor or maybe Proto Power West motor and the B unit has an Athearn blue box motor shoe horned into it. Both have Bachmann decoders and run very well. See y'all tomorrow.
