Morning All

Guess you could call me a "lurker", or maybe a "lurker with cause".  I generate a post on my laptop and invariably it locks up, then is lost.  I'm sure I'm suffering from some viruses, that have consumed or locked up some memory.  So need to use a different computer, and not always accessible to it.  So apologies!

Most importantly,

- Prayers and thought continue for Lucas and Mike.  Glad to see the post today regarding Lucas' and the professors, that should really help!

- Dennis was right on regarding Kev's daughter.  That's a tough situation and unfortunately is would certainly seem that the entire world is crashing in at once.

- Hope those fires get contained soon!  Not a fun situation, and so dangerous!

Wanted to comment about the Credit/Debit card situation.  The best thing to do is to speak with a trusted financial person.  Or, next time your in a bank or credit union, and ask someone in charge your considering Credit or Debit.  And see what they say.  If they are honest you will be surprised with the results!

No one in our family has a debit card, too much risk and downsides.  Primarily due to the exposure if the card is compromised, or if there is an issue with a purchase made.  Debit cards have NO consumer rights, it is solely at the vendors discretion.  The funds have already transferred from the customers account to the vendors, and no retribution is required.  The card issuer may have a policy from their funds, but they cannot secure funds from the vendor.  Some of you may recall when credit cards first became available, a short while later a "Secured" credit card was invented.  These were cards for those who did not qualify for a credit card to have convenience of a card.  These were "secured" by the customer providing a deposit of say $500 or so.  This card has now become the Debit card we see today.   The transaction fees are much higher than a Credit Card, as a result the costs are passed to the vendor.  What do they do?  Either raise prices or a surcharge.  Attempts have been made to raise the fees more because of the majority of debit cards in use.  Many vendors refuse to accept the cards because of this, and that will continue. Hence, you see banks trying to introduce fees to the card holder.  Most people don't realize the accounts that are linked to a debit card can be hacked into via the Debit card information.  Finally, as we all the see the debit card push is on, as we see more and more companies sponsoring their own card, to get a piece of the action. SoapBox

I know a lot of people get upset regarding the screening of our posts.  I know I have had my share.  But we MUST remember we ARE guests on this forum.  And we are not paying for it.  So as long as we are in their house we should abide by their rules.  None of the other forums would even let us have this much latitude.

OH Some GOOD NEWS

I start the Fireman/Engineer job next Tuesday at Knotts.  I have met with most of the crew and staff, and am really looking forward to it.  Told my wife I need a new license plate frame for my car, "My Other car is a Steam Engine".

Hope everyone has a great day, God Bless

Good Thursday Afternoon from beautiful Hamilton Square, NJ

Cloudy and in the 50's right now, calling for lower temps tomorrow...

Happy Anniversary SJ...Mom & Dad are going on 58....and I'll second Fife's recommendation for Sainthood!Smile, Wink & Grin

MikeC - good news concerning Lucas!!

DonB - Congas on the Steamer!

Ray & John - as plans firm up, I'll let you know.   I wanted to go Saturday, but my day will start at 4 AM, not sure what I'll have in the tank after 12 (when work ends).

Not much going on right now...work is slooooowww......I'm nodding off, or trying not to.  Cleaned a couple of cars and have to run to Trenton later and drop off another driver to that branch.

Fire Drill tonight.....been slow there as well.  We'll most likely have  a call  tonight now that I've said that and Friday is  the long day....Bang Head

Not much on the train front....wish there were....surveyed my "collection" at my sister's house.  Man...what a layout I'd have if I had my own place....the shelving alone would cost a fortune!

Oh, yeah, Brent - SUN?  I could've sworn it was yellow.....Laugh

gas is hovering about $3.63-3.69/gallon

Good morning all,  I have spent the last two days with D. Baker who with the help of a friend of his has installed two removable track sections on my layout so I can get in and out of the room.  One was a hinged lift bridge and the other was a lift out piece on two separate tracks.  I am tired but I shouldn't be.  Don did all the work.  I'm just tired from standing.

Sorry to hear about Earl Scrugg's passing.  Great banjo player admired by many including Steve Martin, comedian and Banjo Player himself.  I think the late John Hartford who wrote "Gentle On My Mind" was a big fan of Earl as well.  He mentions him in a song when he says "I'm praying to God and Earl Scruggs we don't have no steam boat wreck".

Prayers for Lucas and Mike

Don, congratulations on the engine service job at Knotts.  You will be the envy of all the railroad wanabees.  I will be routing for you to pass all the test and get the position.

Happy 53rd anniversary to S.J. and Pat.  This will be our 53rd also in November.

Got a call from my brother in Virginia last night.  He is going into the hospital tomorrow morning to get his heart problem evaluated.  He says they are going to check the arteries for blockage etc. and that the surgeon is prepared for any eventuallity wheather it be a stint or right on up to by pass surgery.  He says the doctors are prepared to deal with it whatever the outcome is.  We are all praying for a good outcome

later,

Ray

Well, I went down to my parents place this morning to mow the grass. It was already sprinkling a little and I hoped it would stop soon. Tractor wouldn't start, just a sick sounding click. Disconnected the cables and cleaned the battery terminals then put the charger on the battery at 55 amps for a quick charge. Cleaned the battery cable ends while I waited. Got the cables back on the battery and gave the key a turn. After a few cranks it fired up. By now the sprinkle had stopped and I commenced to mow the yard. Took a few hours but I got it done. Rain was trying to start up again as I put the tractor away. As I got off of it I already knew something was wrong. My arms and legs felt like rubber, I was getting dizzy while standing and my vision was shifting between color and black and white. My parents weren't home but I went into the house anyway and got one of my father's root beer drinks. That would hold me over until I got home. Once home I fixed a rice and pasta dish. Lots of starch for quick energy and the pasta would supply energy later. I feel much better now but my arms are still tingling like they're half asleep. Think I'll just rest the rest of the day. Supposed to be Storm later and LightningStorm tomorrow.

Simple case of not having had breakfast this morning. Stupidity on my part!

Been working on my Rivarossi/Athearn U25C. It's now a Frankenstein. The original SD45 trucks proved to have a lot of wear and were somewhat unreliable to say the least. So I took them apart and in looking at the gears thought they might fit in a pair of SD9 dummy trucks. Next question was will the trucks from the SD9 fit on a SD45 frame? The answer to both question is yes. So using parts from the 90's era SD9 trucks and the 70's era SD45 trucks I built a working pair of SD9 power trucks and they fit right into the SD45 frame. The drive shafts and worms are in place. All I have to do is wire it up and put the decoder in.

Ohayō,

I’ll be off to work in a few minutes.  It is a little chillier today and also overcast.  I have a few important tasks to take care of today before I can end this work week.  I hope you all enjoy the rest of your nights.

SJ – Congratulations to you and Granny.

Dennis – That is very interesting.  I agree, just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.

Dbaker – Congratulations on the job.

Jeffrey – I hope you are feeling better.  Please stay dry.

Kev – Thanks for the obituary email – very sad indeed.

Sayonara,

Joe

Afternoon/Evenin' All.

Been MIA for awhile, to much runnin' around with Little League games and other things going on. Just to tired to post, although I have pretty much kept up with "what's happenin".

Mike, Prayers that Lucas continues to improve, plan on sending you a PM later.

SJ, Wowser and congas on the anniversary. Now I feel a little bit younger. Laugh

Kev, Thoughts & prayers for your daughter, no matter old they are they will always be "Daddy's Girl".

Bob, Good luck on the Iowa !

Filled up the truck, $80. And that was at Costco which has the best prices around here, heard where Chicago currently has the highest prices in the continental states.

Forgot what else I was going to say, maybe I'll remember later.

Dang RT, that's about where our prices were before they went wacky. Costco actually went down about 15cents/gal this week.

Regular here is running from $3.62 to $3.89 depending on where you go. To fill up tomorrow could cost me as much as $70 and that's with about seven gallons in the tank already.

Good evening all,

Congrats SJ and the missus!  Congrats also to Brent and the Q!  KRM, I feel your pain concerning your daughter and I know the frustration with tax forms being wrong.  Jeffrey, please take of yourself, dude.  Just some quick thoughts before I head to bed.  Good, quiet day at work.  Indy car racing in Alabama this weekend.  Hoping for good results from Mike Conway (AJ's team), Josef Newgarden (SFHR), and the Swiss Miss.  All quiet on the Lucas front, which is good news.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good evening everyone.  Long day, but it is finally done and in the end, was good.  Started with a long case that had my brain working overtime.  Got through it and all is well.  Joe, Wednesday's WSJ had a story on 190,000 patients on the medicare rolls who have had cardiac intervention.  They show how bypass surgery has better survival rates and is less risky than stents and angioplasty.  I have read the studies that back this up, but it seems to take some time before the public gets informed.

Brent, great news!  One thing about the way we do it with international adoption, before you leave the host country, the child is yours, no one else can lay claim.  The re-adoption we do here with the courts is just a formality.  Once that is done, you are eligible for some tax breaks if your income is less than a certain amount.  Still, different states have different laws, so it is worth checking out.  I know for us, the limit is $155,000.00, but if the child is special needs, there is no limit.  In Missouri, they consider any case that DFACS is involved with as a "special need".  So, worth looking into.

Mike, sometimes, when people we care about are going through tough times, we don't know what to say or do.  In these times, the best thing can be to just say"I love you" and sit next to them, not saying another word.....just being there for them.  It also helps to let them hear you say prayers specifically naming them.  A recent study spoke to how kids who leave home to go to college will fall away from their faith.  There is one common denominator to the ones who don't.  They say that they heard mom and dad praying for me.

Fife, congratulations on getting the yacht in the water.  I am sure you will spend many special moments on the water.  As to rails and sails, perhaps you could come up with a new charter business, take train buffs and photographers to some scenic rail spots that are best viewed from the water.  You could call it "Sails to Rails".  Then, you could deduct all boating expenses under business expense....tax deduction!

Don, I mentioned this to Ray and I am sure it will work for you.  Try downloading Superantispyware on your computer.  They have a free version that you follow the prompts as directed.  Have it do a complete scan and then reboot as instructed.  If you like it's performance, you can always purchase the version that automatically updates and runs at specified times.  When you do updates, it will prompt you with a special price.  If you check back, eventually it will offer the full professional version which allows for five computers for $9.99.  That is the cheapest I have seen it.  That is for a full year.  Also, wanted to congratulate you.  You get to play with real trains....and get paid for it!  I know it is no task to be taken lightly, as there are some dangers.  But wow! What a great deal.

Tonight, my wife and I went on a date to see October Baby.  Is a good movie with a great message.  I know a number of the folks behind it.  Still, I can be critical, but they really do well with this.  For folks who have dealt with adoption or abortion, it really strikes home.  Gets to the message of forgiveness, something we all need to hear.

Time for bed.

God bless,

Dennis

Sunny and 80 today.  Had a pretty good amount of rain last night.  More storms in the area tonight.  Looks like they will pass north om us though.

RI52 - Yup.  They are colot monitors.  Had to tweak the resolution settings on them up to maximum to get the circles on my drafting programs to show up as circles instead of ovals.

Hopefully, I'll get out to the LHS in the next couple of days to see if he has the new Lionel catalogs yet.  For some reason h eusually  gets them a week to 10 days later than the rest of the world.

All for now.

Prayers and prayers, especially for Kev's daughter and Lucas, plus big Congas for Jimbo and Pat!

Well, my Dad tripped and hit his head.  He's okay, but got a couple staples on top for a while.  Meantime, Char's new meds are doing the job and she's getting better from this sinus infection - it just went crazy.  I think it's part of that crud she had, it just set up in her sinus and ear and became a bacterial infection?  Meanwhile, she broke the power connector off inside her laptop and estimates range from 85 minimum to as much as 500 to repair it.  If it's more than a hundred or so, we'll just get a new laptop as this one is almost 5 years old I guess and was a $400 model back then.

B - good luck on the adoption process!  I didn't realize you were adopting another child?  Or did I misread that?

TARDIS is about ready, just loading up on Ole Mills and clean bowls for the banilla tonight.  Chewy likes to get SJ's bowl extra clean Laugh

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
