Hello all

We have been inundated by engineers and scientists from MIT getting ready for our VLBI run. Very Long Base Interferometry - that's where we tie in with other telescopes around the world (in this case CA and Hawaii) and do strange things like resolve the structure of the black hole at the center of the galaxy. Since they are not yet done setting up it has provided for a couple of quiet nights for me.

I got the side rods installed on the right side of the 1664 w/ some slight modifications due to the different wheel. Seems to work well and look good. Was drilling out the stud so I could replace the drawbar and realized after the fact that I drilled out the wrong oneBang Head There are two identical studs on the trailing truck.

Well that's ok 'cause I need a few parts for the N&W passenger cars I just got. These are interesting. Older kits w/ wood tops and bottoms, cast metal ends, and stamped metal sides. They sit on articulated Lionel trucks, the baggage car on 4 wheel trucks and the passenger car on 6 wheel trucks. They were not painted very well originally, but that's OK as I want to paint them to look like Nevada Northern cars.

Here's the baggage car in it's semi-disassembled state for cleaning and repair:

And the passenger patiently waiting outside the Mt. Graham car shop:

These will definitely be an interesting and fun project. Anybody seen any of these kits before?

Time to get packed up here and find a pillow for a few hours.

Bob

P.S. - what kind of glue is best to set new jewels in the marker lights of a cast boiler shell?

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps near 80.  I washed the truck last night as it was absolutely grungy.  Wife swept out the interiors of all 3 vehicles.  Driver of carpool I am in had a flat tire on the way home.  By the time all was taken care of, I got home an hour late.  Watched "Ringer" last night.  It is no "Buffy", but SMG rules.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good morning. It's 68° and cloudy with fog. The high should be 82° and there's a 20% chance of rain.

No plans for today other than thinking of what kind of project I can clutter up the layout with. Currently I have no projects to work on.

Great photo Doug!  Good morning everyone.  Been a few days since stopping in, and boy have you guys been chatty!  Been very busy and am on call.  I have a meeting tonight, so it is bound to be a long day.  The roofers came yesterday and should be done today.  They do work fast, think they have about 15 guys working.

Kevin, with the new adoptions, retirement is out of question for me.  At least the kids will be taken care of as I have plenty in life insurance.  The way our government is, retirement may not be in the works for most folks.  Too many takers, not enough makers.

Chief, glad you got the photos.  I would not tell them they are from game cameras, just say they are stills from surveillance cameras, or the kids may come and steal the game cameras.  With regard to shooting, we have a new place close by called American International Marksmanship training.  They have special ops instructors who teach everything from sniper training to CQB training.  They have a web site you can check out.  They specialize in bringing law enforcement and military folks to do training, Frankie may have heard of them.

For those who go, enjoy York.  Hope to get there again some day, but we have been swamped with more pressing concerns.

Better run. Hope everyone has a blessed day.

54 with sun. 70s late today.

I did my errands early so now I can goof off. Went to a different Target store this morning and it was laid out completely different than the one I usually shop at, had a heck of a time finding things. Gave up on a couple things. A big breakfast this morning means I'm skipping lunch..S.J.

Hello all,

The unusually warm weather continues here.

Spent last evening working on son's tractor. The wheel spacing wasn't wide enough for the new (to him) plow.

While working on it our old dog Lucy got hit and killed on the road out front. She had been failing fast. Mrs and I had been putting off the inevitable decision to have her put down. My nephew who was helping with the tractor tires suggested she committed suicide by vehicle. She had been known to wander off but stayed away from the road. She just hasn't been herself the last couple of weeks. Thus our concern. Our soon to be 6 year old Doberman and Toy Poodle seem to miss her as well. Even in her failing condition she was still Alpha Dog. She will be missed but her misery is ended. Tonight She will join her predecessors under the old pear tree in the field behind the house.

On a lighter note. Mrs and I hope to join the group at Denny's on the 20th.

Kev, thanks for adding to the SS Fund. What will you new (old?) job entail?

Dennis, the last few years are definitely hindering my retirement plans.

SS fund calls

Prayers for those in need

Good Mornin' Y'all From Overcast Taxachusetts,

What a difference a day makes.  43 here now but should scoot to 60.  The Back Bay Hilton in Boston caught fire late yesterday afternoon.  This was followed by traffic meltdown, a major power outage, and commuter rail disruption.........but thankfully no one was hurt.

I received an email and a call this morning from my bank's fraud detection unit.  Sure enough, I checked my transactions on line and there sat a transaction for $4.99 posted pre-dawn this AM from some outfit out of Green bay WI (with a street address, phone number, and website) called GlamLook.  Told the bank fraud person "No, neither my wife nor I ordered anything on MY card yesterday AM @ 11;53AM!!!!"  As the bank fraud person related to me, my ATM/Debit/Credit card number and info was hacked from some database (not the bank's), affected my card but not the wife's, and was used fraudulently.  They put a hold on my account, are removing the charge, and are "pursuing."  What does that mean to me?  I had to drive to the bank to get a temporary card and activate it, order a permanent new one (with a new number), and now have to change info with two vendors I had set up on automatic bill pay (XM Satellite Radio and the MA Department of Transportation for my toll transponders).  Am glad I don't have automatic bill pay.

This is what I get for simplifying Grammy and Grampy's life by eliminating credit cards, carrying just the one card, and having all money in/money out transactions on one paper and online statement (with info access 24/7/365), which I check almost daily..  If I lived near DougM, I would be tempted to pack up Doberman Maximus, drive to Green Bay, and deal out some tough justice.........and hoping the protection training really works on command. Laugh  On the other hand, something tells me no one would be stupid enough to have a storefront, an associated and working land-line phone number, and a website......and think they wouldn't get caught.

KEV........I think the decision you and your wife reached re your unretirement for this assignment was a good one.  Plus all of your options are open.  Don't forget about the income tax implications (withholding, quarterly filing, etc.).  I spent a year commuting from Boston to Seattle with no available non-stops West to East. Bang Head  I also get to thinking..........what if I live to be 100 and will we have enough $ in retirement to make it?

Brent and Fife......under KEV's scenario,.your wives would never stand still for not having you around to keep working on their honey do lists.  Unbeknownst to him, KEV's wife has already hired landscapers, a furniture consultant, and interior decorators, and has begun clothing and car shopping, to spend the $$$. Laugh

Chuck.........you have "dogs?"

Brutus........if you had taken our advice and medicated with Eagles' Private Reserve XXX @ 190 proof, the crud would have been wiped out much quicker.  Glad you are back to normal!!! Thumbs Up

Bob........that passenger car must have some heft to it.  Thumbs Up

DougM........great pic of the (not so little any more) little one. Thumbs Up

JimmyT........you are thinking of picking up another ProbeGT?!? Surprise

JoeyD.........a good supply of Asahi, Kirin, and Sapporo is probably why you don't feel the earthquakes.  Beer Laugh

DougDG.........I get tired just reading all that you do.  I read your posts and think you have misinterpreted the concept of slowing down a tad.  Wink

Later, gang.

Bob, I have built a whole train of those cars.  They were made by Walthers and came as kits less trucks and couplers.  I bought trucks from Walthers but they were soft metal castings which wore out quickly with needle point axles on the wheels.  I drilled out the holes and added brass bushings later on and now they work OK.  I built five of these short cars because I wasn't sure about what radius they would work on.  Later on I built some 80ft models and they still go around my 072 curves.  These cars were scale looking and could be made to look very good but most people didn't have the talent or know how so you see a lot of them where the end castings are rough and not filed down and the roof taper on the ends have not been shaped right.  A lot of them look like they have been painted with a mop.  The best thing to do with those is strip them a repaint with an air brush or spray can.  I think I would try to find some better looking trucks though than those Lionel modern streamline ones.  The heavy weight cars came with 4 wheel or six wheel pullman trucks.  Walthers does not make these cars anymore but I think Keil Line bought out their parts.

Dennis, what application would sniper training have except for the military?  I suppose things like SWAT teams need to be trained but I would think they just need to be good marksman mainly.  With sniper training I think of those guys crawling around disguised as a bush to hide themselves from the enemy.

Banks,

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.

Brent,

Don't give me any ideas.Wink  Don't need an M80.  WIth the way the original filler neck is, a lit match under the rear would do it.  Would put it back on the lot that it came from first though...Devil

Jack,

I am looking at a 90 GL that is a 5spd but otherwise identical.  Looks to be rot free, and since it is a 5spd, there is no 4EAT automatic trans to crap out as soon as it is back on the road.  Need to call about it asap.  Might be cheaper to buy it and strip/sell the 91 in the long run.

Afternoon all,

81 degrees here.. WOW  Cool  Paradise

Well I went through both safe deposit boxes and no SS card. Go figure.  Bang Head  Bang Head

Went to Peru to the SS office with an AARP mag to spend the day getting a new card and low and behold I was in and out in 15 min..Yes.

I will get the new card is a couple of weeks but I got the receipt I need for the job paperwork,

Banks, So sorry about the loss of your dog. Sounds like it was for the best. I know how hard it is to put one down. She made it easy for you.

The new old job thing will be a consolidation of 4 or 5 storage and manufacturing buildings into one manufacturing and logistics center. Won’t be bad starting with a new 255,000 Sq ft building. I like it when they give you a blank sheet of paper to work with.

Jim the Probe……. Not again???  Surprise  Black Eye    Dunce???

Hope you have better luck on this one and I would like the 5 speed.

Later,

Kev.

Mornin' All.

Looks like we are in the calm b4 the storm, Friday thru Monday calling for lots of rain, wind and big snow in the local mountains. Bob, if you are on the mountain this weekend and the forecast holds true it will be nasty out.

Jack, The munchkin's LL is sponsored by the San Diego Padres which makes it kinda funny since all eight teams are named The Padres. However it does make it easy for us old geezers to remember who to cheer for. Smile, Wink & Grin Each team's uniform is a copy of the different uni's the Padres have worn over the years. Fortunately his is one of the good ones and not the mustard yellow & baby doo brown they wore a good ways back. Confused

Want to get out in the yard today & tomorrow to get some shrubs pruned and cleaned up also make sure the gutters are clean. The culprit that caused the gutter problems, about a 40 ft tall Pine, is now firewood to be aged for next year as well as 4 Eucalyptus.

Still got a couple of engines, MTH & Lionel, that need to go out for repair. Been procrastinating way to long. Snail

What's for breakfast..................... Nuttin' Honey......Cheerios !

With all those pills for dessert. Sigh

Later!

Kev -- you will enjoy reliving your working days, just don't let it become a "job".  I've enjoyed my retirement time immensely but I still remain kinda tied to the former "job".  I do enjoy my time with the kids but I'm ready to retire again and pull the plug completely (famous last words as my wife would say).

I'm very sorry you have to go to North Dakota, my wife's brother lives in the Grand Forks area and we've been there twice -- his son's wedding & a retirement -- I don't ever want to go back!  There are probably worse places to live (and most you know of where I refer, mostly east and south of the MD line) but please, make sure your work is completed by late fall.

Congrats on making the plunge, you won't be sorry.  Or, not sorry for long Thumbs Up  Sending more good weather your way from the Heartlands!

Great advice for all us 'retired' folks. One of my big mistakes was letting a hobby become a job and almost becoming a slave to it.

Thanks Jon,

I will not spit any words out of un-wisdom here, I just want more money for trains.   Smile  As far as West Fargo ND.,? Time will tell and I will keep you guys in the loop. Hey what the heck??? My safety net is I can just go home if I don't like it. Heck after 40+ years of never missing work or sucking off the hind teat or / free Gov money for work not done, or money not earned it is about time I have a choice.

This could be fun. It is an option that the Lord God gave me, I did not look for it or need it so there must be something here I need to do. I am not the judge. I will just try to have fun and help out who I can.

Thanks again and all of you have a good night.

Good evening everyone.  Doug, I will have chocolate pecan!  Ray, police snipers do a similar job of both surveillance and removing threats.  One big difference is that military sniping mostly happen at longer distance and mainly is just a vitals shot, so center mass is Ok.  Police snipers are usually closer, but are more likely to need a head shot, read that incapacitate the person before they pull a trigger, or push a button.  As for my training, I was fortunate to have friends in both law enforcement and military.  I got to shoot with the marksmanship unit and compete.  For practical purposes, I really don't need to shoot extreme distance, but it is a challenge I enjoy.

Banks, I was saddened to here your news. I hope it was quick.  A good dog is hard to lose.

Had a meeting tonight with administration and medical.  I think it went well.  If it turns out like I hope on a few items, things will get better before too long.

Did get some mixed news on some friends of ours.  The guy I asked for prayer for a few weeks ago, his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer.  The good news is that they found it early and should be resolved with surgery.

May each of you and your families be blessed.

Dennis
