Good morning all,

It is cold in SE Indiana.  First day back at work.  Not too much piled up for me.  I did not have to drive today.  I had cereal and streusel muffins for breakfast on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East" and "Points West".  TBIL.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

It is a bitter cold 18 degrees. Going up to 30 today with some sunshine. Light snow on the ground.

Today is a busy day. I have a few chores and a bunch of phome calls to make. I'll be busy most of the day.

Dining car arrived from Points West. We are having an omlet for breakfast.

Hello Joe ( Japan).

This season for the Buckeyes is finally buried and hopefully soon forgotten, the Urban Meyer era starts now. First 7 loss season for Ohio State in over 100 years, guess it seems fitting for the off field antics of this team.

No football today so will hit the trails and check out the Buffalo down at Darby Creek, they should like this cold snowy weather.

Konbanwa and Ohayo (O-hi-o for Chuck) for all you sleepy heads who will be waking up soon,

Today was my first day back to work after two weeks off.  Fortunately it was a slow day and I was able to ease back in to it.  It was a bit chilly today but sunny as well.  The wife made pasta with a brown butter-sage sauce and it was delicious.  I just finished losing to the 8y/o son in a game of Wii Backyard Football.  He knows a bunch of secret trick moves that get me every time.  I woke up around 0230 this morning to watch the PSU game but it was not on television out here.  So I flipped back and forth between the OSU-UF, MSU-UGA, and NEB-SC games while I watched updates of the PSU games online.  It was not a good day for the Big 10.  PSU could not stop Houston's passing game and was unable to score enough points of their own.  And apparently PSU has not hired a head coach yet.

Laz - Happy Birthday!  I thought I typed that yesterday but I was wrong, sorry. Happy B-Day

Jim Probe - I would not want to be in your shoes. Sigh

It's time to get the kids ready for bed.

Sayonara,

Joe

Hey Guys,

Boy this sure is a "chatty" bunch!  Six pages in two days!  That's significant.

Really a beautiful day here today.  Up in the low 80's.  Hard to concentrate on New Year's!

Had a peaceful day, spent the morning downloading pictures to the backup computer, backed up all company files.  Then helped Chris mow Grandma & Grandpa's lawn, cleaned gutters, and trimmed back a couple of trees.  Even found time to connect a Dance Hall I got for Christmas for the layout.  I also received the Miller Engineering Christmas and Reindeer light.  Going to install that on one of the houses, hopefully get it taken care of tomorrow.

Ray, When we were at Kelso, they had the Hugh Howser video for sale.  Didn't pick one up,spent time talking with a couple of the employees and the Park Ranger, (Federal Park).  Learned a lot of the history.  Also, they have in the basement a N scale layout of the entire area when it was at it's peak.  Sure think it would be a great station for TrainWorx to build.

Sorry about the image quality below, should have adjusted more for the sunlight.

Bob If Chris was to head over your way, I don't know how he would find the time.  He is starting his second semester (JR), and has a pretty busy semester set up                                                                  - Took on a position as Publications Chairman for the ASGS Chapter.                                                        - Volunteered for Editor of the the Geology Dept paper at CSUF.                                                                - Working as Admin Aide in the Physics Dept.                                                                                         - Has a Lower Division Thesis he has to do.  (This semester developing the proposal, this summer goes to Alaska for 2 or 3 weeks research, then fall semester writes the final Thesis.  They then publish it.)               - And planning on doing an Internship in Japan the last half of summer.                                                  Plus all the regular semester classes. He has done a number of maps of the Marble Mountains near Barstow, they are way to technical for me.  Too many squiggly lines on them.

Regarding the sensor on the car, just doing some initial research the whole thing seems like a big rip-off.  Little do I know of OX sensors on the camshaft, and a number of others at totally unreasonable places.  The mechanic is really doing his best.  After replacing the box, he told me to drive it for a few days to see if the problem is solved before I pay him.  He then called me today and asked how it was doing, it has died once since we got it back.  So the jury is still out.

Jim,  Sorry to see the pictures, but you judgment is certainly in the right place.  Hope it will work out for you.

Chief, Looks like your doing well with the ATV, I would suggest you be cautious especially with the propulsion potential.  You certainly could reach some previously unattainable heights!

Doug,  Hope your trip into work is fruitful and not another false effort.  The only thing worse than having to go to work with a family at home that isn't feeling well, is one when you really didn't need to go.  Hope the family gets better real soon.

Going to try to go to AGHR train club on Wednesday, the new round house has been finished, and I'm sure it will be awesome, knowing who built it.  Also, hopefully go to a train show in Anahiem this weekend.  Havn't been able to for the last two shows in the area.  (Typically we have 3 per year, all of them in Dec and Jan.)  Also have the monthly TCA and TTOS monthly events, but they are pretty small.

Take Care ALL.

Howdy guys - cold day in Saint Louis!  I think the wind chill was 15.  It will be warmer as the week goes along, though.

We had the day off today, except for the kids - they had to go to school. Apparently one of the teachers asked my son's class, how does it feel to be in the only school within 30 miles that has school today?  D'oh!

Char and I went to lunch at the newly opened Five Guys restaurant, which is good food.  Killed zombies and read some CTT magazine.  Tomorrow is back to work though - gotta keep Chief in ammo!

Nice chat tonight and the TARDIS is ready - let's get going!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Low here tonight will be 25°. No clouds to speak of. Wind north 5 to 10 mph. I'll have the heater on low tonight to keep off the chill.

Good evening all,

Buckeye missed on the snow cannon aim today as it landed in Indiana.  It was a dusting, but it made for some interesting driving activity.  Did a little shopping with the "saucy wench", but generally took it easy.  I had waffles and bacon on the dining car for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  Looks as if I will have to start sending it to "Points West" as well based on the comments recently.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day, and I will be heading back to work tomorrow.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Yeah Chief. I like the mag too. Been looking at a Big Boy as well. I have only shot about 50 rounds to site it in and it was dead on right out of the box. Problem is it is almost too pretty to shot. But then what the heck.

Good and cold today. Nice nip in the air. Never got over 24 degrees today and they say 10 tonight. So it may kill off some of those Johnny Reb germs the Chief sent up here. I am still fighting the sinus thingy but better.

Too strong. Devil

Nice thing is I could drive the Gator to the woodshed to restock the porch woodpile without sinking into the yard.  Yes

Maybe tomorrow I will get down the Henry 22 cal and go out back and do some squirrel hunting. Nothing like hunting in the woods when it is crisp and fresh outside. Wife don’t like it but the neighbor could use some coyote bate.

Mine is .22 Mag as seen in my gun safe.  Fired only 5 times to make sure sights were right.  Smoothest lever action ever made is a Henry.

Chief. You need to hook up with RT and check out the NS set he has on FleaBay. Wife won’t let me get it. Sad

I buy only command control MTH, Atlas and Lionel.  Don't need anymore [got one on order for over a year] as I have 23 modern NS.

Buckeye what a great picture! Nothing better than that look on his face.  Big Smile

I agree.

Later guys.

Jim!

Yuck that looks like a death trap to me. Better take the hit and move on. Just sell it to the next guy and don’t pump anymore money into it. Reminds me of my 1967 GTO when I got it back in 1982 but that was a GTO. Anyway two rear floor pans and a trunk floor later I had something to work with. Huge money pit but I did keep it and beat it for 21 years. I got rid of it when the rust fairy started to show his face and I told the wife no more restore. I did it twice as it was.

Home from the lake house.  All is well there.

Yankee raid cold.  Wind blowing and temps dropping.  Might make it above freezing tomorrow.  Then gradually warming and back to 60.

Last day of deer season here.  Lots stayed home due to the wind.

Had ham biscuits, blackeyed peas and cabbage.  Yes, corned beef and cabbage comes on another holiday.

Jim

I feel your pain. Hopefully you haven't got much more into the GL than purchase price at this point. In selling the MGB I'm walking away from a lot of money in parts. As it is it's not worth much more than I paid for it. I could probably make more money in just selling off all the new parts, but would really like to see the car put together (just not by me). However, that said, after 4 people came to look at it and still no offers. It may be mine for a bit longer so maybe I'll just have to find the time to put it together. After I finish the Corvair, I promised myself I'll never get another old car. Compared to my other hobbies, they can just take too much money way too fast.

Jeff - yup, feedback carbs, so called probably 'cause all they bring is negative feedbackLaugh Having been a parts guy,  sometimes you do have to tell them just what they need to hear, not what you actually are working on. You shoulda' seen it when I was working on my 1964 Clark Cortez motorhome w/ a Dodge slant 6. I converted it to electronic ignition, and it went something like this:

Me: "I need a distributor for a Dodge Slant six"

Them: "OK, what year"

Me: "Let's see...1976 should work"

Them: "Model?"

Me: "pickup"

Them: "1/2 ton?

Me: "Sure, why not"

Them: "2 or 4 wheel drive?"

Me: "2 wheel drive should work" (the motorhome was actually front wheel drive)

I got some funny looks, but I got the part I wanted.

I think we/I found the big problem we've been chasing around the telescope for the last couple months. We have some play in the bearings on the secondary. After listening to hours of discussions w/ my boss, the engineers, and the director, I started taking a closer look today. Bingo. Now to fix it. That will involve taking a big piece of the telescope off, but we gotta do what we gotta do.

Bob: Thanks! That's what I was trying to think of. The feedback (headache inducing) carburetor. One of the things my van needed when my nephew was getting it into running condition was a standard Carter 2 barrel non-EGR downdraft carburetor. Went to Autozone to get one and they kept handing him the feedback model. That won't work on my van as it doesn't have the electronic thing to read it. The van has an ECM module but it isn't connected to anything. The distributor is a non-electronic type (read points). He went to a local place and found the standard model he was looking for, brand new in the original box.

Jim: You're right to give up on that one. OUCH! Looks like the salt and the elements had a field day with it. It needs to go to the shredder.

Happy January 2nd all,

V8, glad to hear they caught the fire bug.  Too bad they published his method of operation.  Hope that doesn't give some other nut ideas.

Jeffrey, being the computer illiterate that I am, my eyes glaze over when you explain all that stuff.  The only way I could learn it would be through repetition.  I have to do the same thing over and over until it becomes automatic.  I'm in the same boat with V8 about posting pics.  My friend, D.Baker here on the forum came over and taught me how to do it once but I didn't do enough repeats on it to retain the knowledge.  I did write some stuff down but lost it somewhere.  My filing system on my desk is non existant.

Had ham, eggs and waffles for breakfast.  Went down real good with coffee.

It's a great day for the Rose Parade and the Rosebowl football game.  One of those Chamber of Commerce days  that usually produce a whole bunch of new people from Snohio and other cold places when it's like this.  If they only knew it's not like this all the time I wonder if they would still come.  The smog is not as bad as it was when I came here in1958.  That year I could stand on Hollywood Blvd. and not see the hills just a few blocks away where the Griffith Observatory is located  I was there for about three days and when it cleared up I was wondering where all these mountains came from.

Happy New Year (day 2)

Ray

Laz,

          Happy B-Day

Kind of a rough day for me.  I pulled the GL in this morning to get a better look at the whole picture.  I've got a decision to make that I don't want to make.Crying

Here is the bottom of the LH rear quarter:

LH frame rail:

Lines to MIA evap canister and filler neck:

Metal that splash shield mounts to, which crumbled when I let go:

I really hate to sell or junk, but this thing isn't worth someone's life  Really upset about this whole thing.

Ah...the feeback carburators of the '80s. Had a good friend w/ a Ford Ranger w/ the same darn one. Part of Ford's EEC-IV electronic engine control system as I recall. Like you, we resorted to putting on a non-electronic controlled carb. Very few people could rebuild those feedback carbs. I saw so many coming back at the auto parts store it's a wonder we didn't stop selling them. The best I heard of was a guy w/ an 80's Mitsubishi truck w/ a feedback carb. Apparently it was impossible to find a good rebuild and the only way to get it rebuilt w/ any quality was to ship it to some guy in CA. Cost: $1500, which was probably what the truck was worth at that point. Scary part was, the guy went for it anyway.

Of course many will say that the complexity is the cost of better mileage and emissions. However I had a '79 Chevy LUV (read Isuzu) w/ a rebuilt engine and standard carb w/ a smog pump, EGR, and catalytic converter that put out pretty much just carbon dioxide and water. Would barely register on the emissions machine. Oh and it was 4WD w/ only a 4-spd and got close to 30 mpg on the highway.

Don - Electronic Idle module? Now keep in mind I've had training in electronic engine controls, but sometimes I wonder whether we are "overtaking the plumbing" as Mr. Scott would say. Sure things have gone way beyond the adjustment of a single screw, but do we really need a whole module to control the idle? What happened to throttle position sensors? Alas..., but sounds like you learned some geology there Don. Send Chris out to AZ and I can give him the geologist's perspective of the Grand Canyon State. Geologist by training, constructionman in the Navy, mechanic by experience, and some how ended up in astronomy...

I wouldn't put it past some auto parts manufacturer to make something to control a tiny function like that. Back in the 80's I had a '83 Ford Escort with an electronic carburetor. It had two cylindrical modules on it about an inch long. One controlled the idle setting, the other (so I was told) controlled the fuel mix setting. Other than that the carburetor was a garden variety Carter carburetor. Those modules gave me no end of trouble and I just stuck a non-electronic Carter carburetor on it. The car ran a LOT better after that. The only carburetor that gave me more headaches was an electronic Holley carburetor on an '87 Dodge Omni I bought in 1990.

Hello all

Another exciting day collecting photons. Another holiday for the university, so normal people get the day off, which also means all the issues which have cropped up over the last week get pushed off for another day. Sigh...

Geologist by training, constructionman in the Navy, mechanic by experience, and some how ended up in astronomy...

Been tinkering w/ a Hallicrafters S-38C radio circa 1953. This is an entry level ham radio receiver. Half the battle is remembering where I was when I ran out of parts 6 months ago. Mostly involves the replacement of the old paper capacitors, but since I like to use my radios I make a few updates, such as polarized power cord, in line fuse, etc. This can add to the fun of interpreting an old schematic.

6th day on the hill. One more and home. How does that old trucker song go? "Six days on the hill and I'm gonna make it home....er....Wednesday night"

They caught the Hollywood arsonist. Police say no doubt the right guy. He used small BBQ starter cubes, completely randomly drop these cubes in cars. The fire may not get going for several minutes so he was long gone. 55 fires and may have tried many more that never got going. He is a German imigrant mad because his mother who was here illegally was up for deportation. A federal immigration agent recognised his picture from survalence vidios and the police had his description and description of his van.

Gee, was that supposed to make them consider his mother's case differently? They should deport his$1***$2while they're at it! Kinda like stomping on the judges toes with golf shoes before asking him to waive your traffic fine.
