for your friend Jack. We never know about these things. I personally have A-fib. it was discovered during a stress test and as my personal doctor said to me I gave the doctor giving the stress test a stress test as I went into A-fib and was told that somewhere around 90% of those who go into a heart attack during A-fib don't survive and he stated I was on the edge of that happening when he told the nurse to sit me down stat. I'm lucky as I have always returned to normal heart beat so far. I have had to goto E.R. once to get them to slow it down as I was over 160 beats a minute for over an hour so dummy here drives himself to the ER as wife doesn't drive. Yes I got lectured about that move by my doctor and the E.R. doctor. It can be a bad thing as stated prayers for your friend and keep us up on his condition.
Well my wallet is now $900 lighter as had a problem with the truck but to be honest not really upset as I rather pay that than have a $300 - $400 a month car note for another vehicle every month for 4 to 6 years.
not much else going on here just relaxing will call my computer manufacture tomorrow as it has a 5 year warranty and I'm still having a problem even after the last so cal talk me thru fix.

Jack, you're a good friend. He's lucky. Heard about this spectacular derailment in northwest IN? http://www.chicagotribune.com/

JACK,
Prayers for your friend. Like others have said hindsite is always 20/20.
Jack, prayers sent for your buddy. Meantime, don't beat yourself up so bad. You did what you thought was right. We all have had things happen that we thought we could have done better. Hindsight is 20/20.

Hello all,
I'll jump in here to say a prayer for Jack's friend.
Banks, Proud member of the OTTS TCA 12-67310
Jack: for your friend. I hope he can recover from this.
Please say a prayer for my buddy. His condition has worsened significantly, and they are moving him to ICU. I'll be going in to visit if they will let me in. I have no family names or phone numbers I can use to contact his next of kin......some research on my part is in order.
It's in God's hands now.
Jack

Good afternoon all,
IIABSDIEI with temps in the 50s. Wife and I have been working out at the YMCA. Been doing at least 2 miles a night and I have been tossing in a few laps of running as well. RI52, sorry to hear about your friend's illness, but glad to hear you were there for him. Do not beat yourself up too badly on what you could have or should have done. We all have events in our past that we could look back and see what could have been a better course. Usually there was another way to go that could have been worse as well. I was going to try to post every day here and follow the conversation much better this year, but obviously that has not happened. I will do better. Time and energy slip away more easily now it seems. Not sure why. I had the regular fare on the dining car this morning for breakfast before sending it to both "Points East" and "Points West". TBIL and I can drive. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

you did the best you could under the circumstances. Free will is a b***h, and I have run into similar things during my emergency services lifetime. Those who, in my first aid/emt opinion should be transported would do an RMT (refuse medical treatment) and SIGN OFF on it! Your friend should be honored to have you as a friend.
Into the 50's we go today, the sun is out and partly cloudy.
After praising my 346K neon, it has beaten me for now and my brother in law has blessed upon me a 176K Nissan Pulsar NX. It doesn't overheat the suspension is good and it needs some audio. The bad? 5th gear grinds. I have an idea what that might be, but that's for another time. I'll save the neon for when I have extra cash and rebuild it for the Princess --- who is going for her permit test today!
I have a buyer for the Daddy Wagon...albeit much less than I want for it , but it's cash and that'll bridge me for a while.
OK off to the showers, a new adventure awaits!

Good morning
37 soaring to 50. With sun.
RIJack you did what you thought was right, that's all you can do. As a teen my dad was having a heart attack right before my eyes and I did nothing because he told me he was ok. At that age I didn't know any better and would probably have had trouble getting him to go out for help as well. My instinct said do something but he was telling me no. Next day one of his brothers forced him into the ER. He survived that one but the damage was done. On we go, York is ahead along with a lot of winter days. Friday is our eat out day but no place in mind yet..S.J.

Doug,
I was reading about the Woodland Scenics fire over on OGR. I've been following the "other hobbies" thread there also. Lots of Mustangs, and somebody even snuck in a pair of Forzda crossbreeds.
Brent,
I don't see the attraction to the iSad or any other the other iBrainwashu products either. I'll take capatability over being exclusive any day.
Not much planned for today. WIll wash the PGT while it is warm so that it doesn't look like swiss cheese by Spring thanks to PennDOT's overuse of salt. I keep thinking about the GL, and I realized it isn't that bad. The Sunfire was just as, if not more, rotten in the same places. I was always chasing rust or electrical problems. Hope that car got crushed by now.
Still working on changing the layout to O42 so that I can get everything out of the livingroom.
Well, I suppose it is my turn now to relay a "friend in bad shape" situation. My first "local" friend when I moved out here 23 years ago has wound up in the hospital. He doesn't have any family close by and is a loner, no real friends other than me. Preliminary tests confirm atrial fibrillation and a possible (resulting?) stroke, the latter hopefully to be firmly diagnosed today with an MRI. He has many of the classic stroke symptoms. I can't do much for my buddy here in Taxachusetts, but maybe my/his story will help someone else here on the POT.
Around Thanksgiving my buddy came down with what he thought was a case of bronchitis that wasn't clearing up. Coughing and congestion. Did nothing. By early December he was getting winded easily and was having trouble catching his breath. The same was true at night when trying to sleep. He was awakened at night at various intervals, unable to catch his breath while the coughing continued. Two weeks into this he went into the local pharmacy which has a "clinic" type person on staff who told him he did not have pnuemonia and it was brocnchitis. They gave him some "pearl" medication to loosen up the congestion, a Mucinex OTC med, and a vial of the albuterol inhalant, presumably to open up his bronchial tubes over the short run. That was December 7.
Yesterday AM he awoke and could not catch his breath and for the very first time (according to him) he was very weak and unsteady on his feet, to the point where he fell down. He called me, but all he said was he was very sick, and asked me for a ride to his Doctor. That should have been my first clue something was very wrong beyond normal, but he sounded OK on the phone, not great but not in dire straits either..
When I arrived to pick him up, his outward appearance and weakness/unsteadiness was a shocker. His words were slurred but he was coherent and speaking in full sentences. The slurred speech was sporadic, only when he was having trouble catching his breath. He said he hadn't eaten or slept in three days.
I told him we should call 911 immediately. But he vehemently protested and insisted we just drive the 5 minutes to the Doctor's office. I barely got him out to my car in his driveway and from the car into the Doc's reception area (about 20 feet each leg). They took him immediately, initially diagnosed A-Fib, and zipped him the 100 yards to the hospital emergency room in a wheel chair.
As it turned out he didn't have bronchitis or pneumonia. Only the Lord knows how many weeks he was in A-Fib which can be chronic or periodic. But it doesn't resolve itself and, if protracted, and one is still alive, the elevated (in this case) heartbeat and inefficient heart pumping can cause a blood clot and subsequent stroke......and he had the classic stroke symptoms, albeit mild ones, but not all of them.
He at least told all of the medical professionals throughout the course of yesterday that he wanted me in the room at all times during the "interrogations." That was a good thing because I was free to either confirm, contradict, or clarify exactly what I had observed personally or had spoken to him about over the past 6 weeks, especially yesterday when things went South in a hurry. I also learned he had me down as his emergency medical contact on file with his PCP.
When he started talking early on at the hospital about refusing admittance and going home after the extensive battery of tests were concluded, I quietly stepped out of the room, got on the phone, and cleared my schedule, then waited with zipped lips until the no-nonsense cardio and neuro Docs were present to squash that "go home" notion. "In your professional opinion, should he spend the night at your hotel?"
The Docs looked at me like I had two heads with that question for which the answer was obvious to anyone with an IQ of 60 or higher......but I had to make sure we got my buddy's head on the same page with the rest of us. I spent the next six hours at the hospital until they moved him to a room and I was sure he wasn't going to decide anything to the contrary and countermand their recommendations.
I am nearly 61 years old and should have known better these past 6+ weeks.
But I was too polite and overly concerned that one's adult decisions (his) about what, how, and when they choose to take (medical) action are their own. In retrospect, I should have worked a harder (gentle but firm, consistent persuasion) to convince him to go see his Doctor when things hit the 7-10 day mark with his persistant cough.
What was the worst that could have happened? He might have deeply resented my interference in his life choices? So what!!!! A month ago I should have concluded that when one chooses me as a friend, they have to be prepared to accept all that goes along with me. even the less palatable things.
I made some poor choices in this instance and must learn from it. The consequence of my polite deference to my buddy and his decisions have had extremely bad consequences, for him.
We usually wind up regretting the things in life that we didn't do but could have done, or in hindsight, should have done. At the end of the day I would have rather had lost a friend, this friend, if he had managed to dodge just part of this bullet and had a better health outcome in the exchange.
Most fences can be mended. Some cannot be repaired........ if we wait too long or do nothing.
Konbanwa,
It was fairly warm today for January and also very sunny. The workday went fine and I came home at a decent hour. We ordered pizza for dinner and the family watched Little House on the Prairie. I worked on a crossword puzzle. I am getting ready to finish some schoolwork before heading off to bed.
Kev - You pond and culverts look great.
SJ - I sent you a PM.
Sayonara,

Aloha. Like Kev said, 42 right now - supposed to get to 54! Yay! Jeffrey, that's a nice little loco. Spent most of the afternoon at the eye doc - readying for cataract surgery later in the year - have to see a battery of other docs first. Oh well. Brutus, congrats on your York decision - hope to get there someday myself. Brent, I hear you about the Android world. Since my users are 'dumb' and don't need Flash, the Apple premium is worth it for their 'ease of use' - I have at least one of every active tablet out there, and I'm impressed at how primitive the Android or Win powered ones are in comparison. Of course, it's relative.Did you hear about the fire at Woodland Scenics? http://www.connectmidmissouri.com/news/story.aspx?id=704154#.TwcFekp95_l
Good morning. It's 59 and very foggy. A dense fog advisory is in place until 9 am. The high will be 72 and there's a 40% chance of rain all day. This morning I have my parents pampered pets (two very energetic poodles) to the groomers for a clipping. That should take no more than an hour but is totally dependent on the cooperation of the dogs. They can be difficult to get along with at times. Not much happening otherwise. I worked on the little Fleischmann loco and coach last night. I removed the hook and loop couplers and replaced them with Kadee couplers in #242 draft gear boxes. Not as hard as I thought it might be. Like the old saying, hope for the best, plan for the worst. The couplers look a bit high but the gauge shows them to be right. Must be the small size of the units. The loco runs a little better but is still pretty rocky.
Hello all
TGIF
A balmy 40 degrees and cloudy here this morning.
Not much going on here. Looks like we'll have the grandkids all day Saturday so maybe no musket hunting. Epiphany is past so I'll start removing outside decorations on Sunday, in between watching the PA Farm Show on PCN. The Christmas tree will stay at least till the end of the month. As long as it holds it's needles.

Stay frosty,
Don - hope it all works out, man!
Warm here in Saint Louis today. I had a doctor appointment and my BP was down to 132/88 on my no added salt diet etc. Other labs they ran were good. I have to have more labs in about 6 weeks due to some meds I'll be on for a while and a follow-up in 3 months. She made me promise to start a diet and start losing weight. That's the next step.
Nice chat with SJ and Charlie tonight. We are all booked up for rooms and Char is trying to get the American Airlines website to cough out reservations for me. Should be fun!
TARDIS is ready, so lets get a move on!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Still mild here in Michigan for January. I know SJ is not complaining.
Had dinner with the guys tonight and firmed up our York plans. I also heard some exciting news about someone else who plans to be a Yorkie this year.

Warmer here today and they are saying we might hit 70 this weekend??? No rain in sight.
Brent - I have not but I recommend you pick up an MTH smoke unit from their parts guys at York this spring.
Jeffrey - liked the photo of the Gramps tank car on the rack.
LAZ - yes - lots o' Grits. You shoudl try them!
Have great day tomorrow all!
Regards, Roy
A little early for me but I have to call it a night. Had a good dinner tonight. Chimichangas with chili, cheese, hot salsa and sliced olives. Gotta be up early tomorrow to take my parents poodles to the groomer. Oh joy! That's all I need. Two balls of energy at the end of a double leash! Almost as bad as a couple of sugared up kids on a School night! If I could figure out a way to harness that energy I'd be a rich man and the world energy crises would be licked.See y'all tomorrow.
Decent Southern weather. Fox hunted until dark. Fox Pro didn't produce a thing. Started with rabbit in distress, then bay rabbit in distress, then vole and, close to dark, a short blast of female gray fox in distress. Same place we killed 13 in two months last year. Figured that others had moved in. Fred has deer hunted it and says seen no foxes this year, where as, last year before our "house cleaning", he saw two or three each evening from his stand. We saw lots of them running around just at dark and lots of "barking". Nothing this year and nothing tonight as I stayed after dark to listen.
KRM Hi Guys, Holy Cow Rebel weather today 54 degrees and sun. Thanks Chief., Heck I saw bugs in the air here today. I told them to head south ASAP. Kev.

Hi Guys, Holy Cow Rebel weather today 54 degrees and sun. Thanks Chief., Heck I saw bugs in the air here today. I told them to head south ASAP. Bet we hit 60 tomorrow. Stayed out all day. Took a walk in the woods then I had to change oil on two cars that were one of my best friends, who passed about 14 months ago. The big C........His wife and granddaughter came buy with them and I did the oil changes and looked everything over for her. Sure felt different with Dave not here to BS with but it was good for Sandra and his wife to hook up for awhile. Only went into the basement to show the train layout to them, otherwise nothing going on with the trains. It was nice to get back in the shed and do some car work. First time in about 4 month. I got a heck of a nice shed to not use it but things change as we age.
