Evening all!

Temps dropped quickly today and near freezing. Will be freezing tonight and only 40 tomorrow and then colder yet tomorrow night. Got the outdoor faucets set up for the cold. Found water in my truck from all the rain. Hope it is not a bad seal. Will have to watch that. No snow here but some to the west.

anjdevil - get well soon!

Had an extremely long day so hard to catch up on all the posts. Hope all are well.

Have a great day tomorrow!

Regards, Roy

Hello all

Clear and VERY cold on the mountain tonight, about 5 F.  We got about 9" of new snohio over the weekend and a few more inches today.

Went down the road a bit earlier to help pull out some observers for the Vatican telescope that got stock. Typical situation. Rental SUV which is more glorified station wagon than anything else, street tires, no chains, etc. They don't put tow hooks on these things anymore either. Had to tie off to a frame member for the rear diff. But after chaining up the big 3/4 ton we got 'em out. At one point while we were trying to get the vehicle unstuck I noticed there was a little light of a car skidding on the dash lit up. The automatic traction was obviously freaked out. Ya think!? New vehicles are great, but there are many things about them that just plain suck for some purposes.  SoapBox

anj - glad to hear you are feeling better. That sounds like no fun.

8N - liking the progress on the layout!

Jeffrey - the Niagara is awesome!

Kev - how big is that smoke unit in your Plymouth switcher? Was thinking it might be the ticket to adding smoke to my 1615 (purists close your earsStick out tongue)

Chief - glad to hear your friend is back home.

Well due to how cold it is right now, my receiver compressors are not going to like it when I open up in the next hour. Probably will have to keep charging them w/ gas. Wish me luck!

Bob, great to see you checking in.  I have gotten too accustomed to the Georgia climate, I like snow for about two hours, then I have had enough till next year.  You are a good guy to help out those in need.

Kev, I did see the post, but my collection is so buried at present that if it wasn't on top of the layout while we are preparing for Christmas, I won't be seeing it till after.  When I get in there, I will look for the log cars.  It was a set of three I believe.

Gotta run, God bless,

Dennis

Cloudy and cold, George the cat has already returned to the bed where it is warm.

Bob, That smoke unit is very small for what it puts out. Stands to figure the switcher is small as well. I couldn’t believe how tight the things were in it when I pulled the shell. The unit is $32.00. Forget the purists you are dealing with TOY trains it is about the fun.  Big Smile

Dennis, Thanks just thought I would ask. Not a problem.

LAZ, Talked to the neighbor yesterday and no coyote yet but he said he has placed the bait squirrel where he can shot the coyote from the kitchen window.  Smile, Wink & Grin

RT, anyone take the bait on the NS set yet?   Pirate

Well got to go get some wire for the extra lights I am installing above the train table.

Later, have a good day everybody!

Konbanwa,

The weather was nice this morning but turned chilly and rainy around 1630.  While construction crews were doing some work on base today they came across an unexploded bomb.  It was most likely from WWII as there are many of those across the Pacific and Europe.  They found it about 1530 in a usually high traffic area for the base which caused some problems for folks trying to get home from duty.  They had to block traffic for the obvious reasons while the bomb crew came to make it safe.  I was one of the many who waited over an hour to get home - it usually takes me about seven minutes.  I would have walked but it was raining hard and I did not have an umbrella.

I laid a decent sized oval (square) of track beneath the tree tonight.  I also conducted some tests with the new train and other trains I own.  For some reason my locomotives with Trainsounds continuously sound their horns, bells, and Trainsounds.  The locos ran fine; it was just the continuous sounds.  I first thought it had something to do with the CW-80 and Japan using 50 Hz, but both my CW-80s are 50 Hz okay and my CW-40 had the same issue.  Also, I ran a loco that doesn't have Trainsounds, just a simple horn, and it ran normally.  So I suspect it must be something with the Trainsounds not liking 50 Hz.  I will do some research but I appreciate any thoughts you all have.

Dennis - I saw the news reports about the accident, but don't worry, I was not involved.  Laugh

Stourbridge, Bob, SJ - Send your snow to Japan please.

Jeffrey - I hope your eyes are doing better.

Rich - I'm glad you are feeling better.

Sayonara,

Joe

Good Morning Breakfast lovers

32 degrees now, about an inch of snow on the grass and cars. The pavement is clear and dry though. Well like Dennis said: That's enough till next November. Tomorrow is Dec 07, Pearl Harbor day. Ahead were some of Americas hardest years. Today that event might destroy this country as we have so little manufacturing left here. S.J.

Afternoon all from wet cloudy Southern Ohio,

The twins have a bug and the boy is home from school with a fever.  Today is the youngest’s birthday, she is eight going on eighteen.

The addition we’re putting on has a metal roof on purlins.  Before I insulated the ceiling (R-30) it was noisy but neat during the rain.  An occasional acorn falling can startle you.  The rest of the house already has a metal roof but it is over shingles and sheathing and R-30 insulation, so the noise is more subdued.

Buckeye – It would be neat to go to that Springfield show.

Later, may God bless

Good morning all,

It is cloudy but dry in SE Indiana.  Helped wife with more Christmas stuff last night.  Will set up Polar Express around tree tonight.  Work is going very well.  Had bran muffins on the dining car before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' All.

The Misses event went well last nite, but I am still pooped from all the preps. Now the fun part, finish washing all the the pots/pans/dishes etc. One load started before bed another going now and at least two+ more to go. Crying

Kev, I don't recall seeing a Plymouth w/log cars set, but then again I have difficulty remembering what I had for lunch.  But there is a set that was done to go w/the Porter. I don't have the Porter but I did pick up a set of the log cars on EvilBay, sweet little cars with diecast chassis and great rolling trucks. The plastic logs are kinda blah but they do have good tie down chains w/tension springs. Check the link: http://www.lionel.com/Products/Finder/ProductDetail.cfm?ProductNumber=6-22461&expandBranch=0&Keywords=porter&CategoryID=0&RailLineID=&CatalogId=

Go see the cardiologist for checkup this afternoon, probably get a reprimand for some weight gain. Been to much salt intake the past several days.

Prayers for all in need, get well soon. Angel

Later all.

So at 6 this morning my dear wifey gently informs me that she has to drive some business associates to a meeting today.  She wants me to run out with the vacuum cleaner to do a quick pass on the interior of her car.

Why she didn't tell me this last night, I don't know, nor did I ask.  How tough can that be, I ask myself?  I just detailed the car inside and out not too long ago and had been keeping up with things, down to the last pebble or scrap of paper.  I am somewhat anal about maintaining the condition of my vehicles.  But I am also practical, recognizing that with grandkids and dogs that everything can't be perfect.

It seems that when she went out Sunday and bought the real balsam Christmas wreath and the real balsam garland, she had the lot guy just throw the stuff on the front passenger seat......... INSTEAD OF in the trunk that had an OEM, factory- fitted removable mat I bought on purpose, for THIS purpose.  Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head  Pine needles everywhere, including in all of the nearly impossible places to reach, even with the crevice tool !!!!!

Finished.  Came back into the house hauling the "real" cannister vacuum cleaner and attachments.  Then I hear "What took you so long?"  Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head

Jack.  Laugh

First time posting at the coffee pot.  Was working on installing a new floor in the study and accidentally cut the phone line and it fell into the crawl space.  Had to go down and fish it back up through.  Doing that edged out my Christmas train layout until later.

Actually, that's just a myth. The United States is still the largest manufacturing country in the world (although there is some debate about whether China has recently caught up).

You're assuming that the loss of manufacturing jobs in the US has resulted in a decline in overall manufacturing output. This is simply not the case.

In fact, even with the job losses, our total manufacturing output has steadily increased over the past 40 years.

http://blog.american.com/2011/01/the-demise-of-america%E2%80%99s-manufacturing-sector-has-been-greatly-exaggerated/

This is primarily due to increased worker productivity in the US. By comparison, in China, it takes about nine times as many workers to achieve roughly the same level of manufacturing output as we have in the United States.

In fact, our ability to quickly manufacture military arms today is much better than it was at the end of 1941. Today, the US leads the world in arms production by an overwhelming margin. Six out of the top ten military arms manufacturers in the world are American companies.

By the way, my dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the war, and he really enjoyed reliving some of the old memories when I took him back to Hawaii for a vacation some 60 years later.

Jeffrey in La., Nice job on the Nickle Plate Road gondola.  Looks very authentic.  Regarding metal roofs, I was in a house with a tin roof when I was 3 or 4 I guess during a hail storm.  It was coming down in golf ball size.  It sounded like a dump truck unloaded a truck full of bricks.  That is one of the few things I remember at that early age.  Hope your eye problem gets better soon.

Got tree up but not decorated yet.  Did put some fastrack around it though.

Nights have been cool lately.  It was 48 in the garage this morning.

Paid nearly $4 bucks for a tube of toothpaste yesterday.  Saw the same brand on sale today for 99 cents.  Go figure.  I think I will load up today.

later,

Ray

aloha all. Sick and abed with some flu I think. Ugh, At least the bride seems to be feeling better. Rare for us to both be down at the same time fortunately. Welcome Monon! That sure was a great line. Brutus, I have an email in to Lionel about buying new traction tires for James. I stored them all in a jumble. I see Lionel has a one day sale on Thomas for $99. Hmmm.  It's tough with letting go with the youngsters - in my world, there's definitely a gender difference in this. Jack, I'm glad your canister picked up the pine needles. Not many would. Supposed to get as cold as Stourbridge and SmBob here over the weekend. I'll be happy to send that on east...

Thanks Dougdagrump for the link but out of $$$$$$$$ till after the holidays. I have 6 log cars already and 3 flats with lumber loads. I just was looking for something real small for the Plymouth switcher to haul. Kind of like the ore cars.

The big problems with factory log cars is the logs are not to scale. So I have mads some loads from smaller sticks. Cut them to size and bake at 300 for an hour to kill any bugs in them.

Don't let the Dr reprimand you to much it is aftre all the holidays.

Welcome  Mononflyer

DougM hope you get better soon.

RT, I found out I still have a Yahoo account but when I tried to load the message software my firewall would not let happen. Going to see if I can shut it off and then load it.

Just finished adding three more lights over the table. Went cheap used screw in scokets and 100watt CFLs. Nice and bright now.

Well got to go!

 Later.

Edw it may be a myth to you but all the empty buildings I pass every day use to be filled with manufacturing and all the things I use to buy that said made in USA now say China on them. To each his own as the saying goes.

Welcome Mononflyer!!  My Gold and Black Monon BL2 is the star of my layout.  My great great grandfather rode the Monon when he mustered out to Indianapolis in 1864.  Of course the famous Monon shops were located in the city of my birth along with a world class university.

Okay who pulled the cord?  The snow cannon is out of commission tonight because someone out there yanked the internet cord out of Chuck's house.  Messing with the snow cannon could prove to be a big mistake in judgement.  Chuck called me and told me that his computer was down and I told him we would blame it on the Chief.  Who else would we blame it on?

On the road tomorrow.  Eastern Ohio is full of workers drilling for gas.

Evening all!

If you noticed that Buckeye is posting more often - it is because Christmas is closing in and he expects gifts. The good news is he believes it when we tell him at least half the presents he gets are from C-Potters!

The good news is the wife and daughter are putting up the Christmas decorations and I am reclining in the chair with a nice fire and some red wine!

The other good news is the concrete guys showed up this morning and framed up all the forms for the new walk to the front door. It was 32 this morning when they started and it did not get above 38 today. I made them a big pot of coffee late morning which they appreciated very much. Supposed to be 27 tonight but headed for 40's tomorrow and then another light freeze tomorrow night. They think they will pour the concrete tomorrow - I hope so. The front area is a huge mud pit.

Really tired. Dealing with the pinched nerve in my neck for 2 months really destroyed my sleep pattern so most nights I am up until 1 am and I have to be up at 6:30 or 7. Ugh!

Lee - welcome back!

Monon - Welcome

Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!

Good evening everyone.  Turned into a very long day as several surprises that made the cases last much longer.  No problems, just things that require more effort.  Finally get home to some homework for my son that needed some clarification.  After tackling some honey do's, I was finally able to get a bite to eat.

Joe, a couple of things you might try, first, switch the wires to the tracks.  There had been some issues like you describe with a run of the transformers from Lionel.  Second, you can try putting a low power light bulb, or even a lighted bumper on the layout that will draw a small amount of power.  There was another reported issue where there was a small amount of voltage leak that was causing problems, even when the locomotive was in neutral.  These are small issues, and are the cheapest to do. Let us know if either solves your issue.  Also, try a search of this site as these issues were discussed some time ago.  That may also give you ideas of other things to try.

EDW, it would be most difficult to establish the true level of manufacturing in China as the government has whole complexes that are built with many large buildings to manufacture items.  Many are not occupied, just empty buildings that new, or expanding companies are expected to use.  Also, as you eluded to, they are a living poster to inefficiency.  I saw such things as women with baskets on their backs weeding the median of a highway where we could just run by with a truck sprayer to get the whole stretch of road.  There, they will have six women doing such labor that could have been done with one.  I also saw them making roads by hand.  Imagine a hundred people building a stretch of road laying asphalt, etc.  we could do it with ten guys and a couple of pieces of machinery.  On a positive side for China, I got to see some artisans doing fantastic work on some very small pieces that looked gorgeous when completed.

Now Buckeye, that major university, is that the one that is trying to develop a footBall team?  I think it is The Ohio State community college...just kidding.

Well, my bed time has come.  May each of you have a blessed night.

Dennis

Time for me to call it a night. My eyes don't hurt quite so bad today but then I didn't do much reading either. The computer did the reading and I just listened.
