Kev,

You could wire a bimetallic protection thermostat in series with the heat demand wire from your standard thermostat to the furnace control relay.

The extra thermostat closes on a temperature drop (chose about 45 F as these units are very sloppy on temperature tolerance +/- 5 degrees). So when your regular thermostat trips at 55 degrees the extra thermostat is still open and does not close until approx 35 degrees. When it warms above 45 degrees it will open again. There are several versions available.

About $10 not counting shipping.

You could also adapt a swimming pool freeze guard unit but these are pretty expensive, but are more tight in terms of the on and off temps near freezing and contain a 120/220 volt contactor to handle a 220 volt pool pump.

Welcome Stourbridge Lion.  Welcome

I am kind of new here to. There is a great bunch of people here! I love you tree layout. One of these days I need to learn how to post on U-Tube.  Confused

Well still sort of cold here. Did get my hairs cut and made it to the bank so my day was a success.

My K-Line Plymouth Switcher Train, engine with ore cars was sent today and should get here fast. Only 130 miles away. Yes  http://www.ebay.com/itm/160681947438?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Thanks for the Welcomes!  I figured it was about time I at least spent a little time in the CTT forum given I do run one of my O trains around the tree every few years and hope to setup a ceiling ring in a few months down in what will become my basement layout room.

Howdy All.

We were lucky here in the Sandy Eggo area, little to no wind so far. Did see where Mammoth Mountain, one of my former favorite ski areas, was getting sustained 140+ winds. Hope none of the lift towers were damaged. The Cornice, in my younger years, was a ball to ski from.

No museum for me today, Christmas on the Prado tonite and it is/will be a madhouse thruout the park and museums. Don't need the aggravation and the crowds. Blindfold

GATS this weekend, think the better half and I will go. Probably won't buy anything but will do a lot of looking and BS'ing with friends.

The carrier, Sprint, is dis-continuing the service that I have for my antique cell phone so the better half was talking about "upgrading" it and the service. Personally I don't need nor want one.

The better half has a hen party/function tomorrow so I need to get back to baking cookies. They have some sort of luncheon/fund raiser and my cookies will be up for sale with proceeds going to Rady's Childrens Hospital. Chef But I did have to sample a few as part of my Quality Control function. Whistling

Later all.

Talking about off topic Brent, how is this? Off Topic

Has any of you heard of or seen a garage / shed thermostat that goes down to like 35 degrees but ……… here is the hard part….. Also runs the AC side of the furnace?? Hmm

I have found garage thermostats that go that low but never one for a HVAC set up. Thought asking can’t hurt. I have not found anything here in the Midwest. I can’t be the only person with a shed with HVAC.  Huh?

Tks,

Kev.

Good morning all!

Jack - the problem your firnd is facing is a tough one. US cellular services depending on the provider (i.e. AT&T, Verizon, etc.) all work on different frequency bands and the bands span 700 MHz to 2 GHz in pieces. The networks are a conglomeration of frequencies and even a single provider may have different services on different frequency bands (i.e. 4G service is in a different band from 2G/3G service). So depending on what provider each person in the office has and what service they use (2G/3G/4G) can really complicate this. This is why any signal booster must cover the entire range. The boosters the cellular providers use to provide in-building services (when a building is too dense to allow the signal penetration) cost $15,000 to $50,000 uninstalled. The boosters have to be very high fidelity to avoid interference to the signals passing through the booster. So any use of a booster from an electronics store is a hit or miss.

Supposed to rain here today. Supposed to head towards freezing temps over the weekend.

Have a great day all!

Good morning all,

The wind has subsided a lot here.  Last night was not bad at all.  I finally got some much needed sleep without a lot of wind related noise outside.  Looks like Pasadena got the worst of it from the papers.  That's about 15 miles West of me.  I was very happy that our roof held up well during the windstorm.  I have nothing but good to say about our roofer.  He ain't cheap but he's darn good.

Jeffrey, that Southern steam engine reminds me of the new 10 wheeler being offered by WBB.  Looks like yours is a 2-6-0 but very similar to the WBB 4-6-0 in appearance.  It is also available in Southern.

Regarding cell phone boosters,  I don't use em enough to worry about it.

later,

Ray

Jeffrey,

I hate car dealers for just that reason. Your time is worth nothing to them.

I just filled up in Ottawa IL. at $3.19 a gallon. Not bad for here.

Aloha from a cold Crystal Lake where I'm not going to get to cutting the grass because of the scattering of snow on the ground. TGIF - just finished making a huge batch of Murphy's Irish Cream to give as gifts, using a secret family recipe involving lots of cold-banishing Jamesons. Bride is still sick and I've unfortunately got her cold too.   RT, love your snow removal animation. We will need it soon enough. Dennis, it is truly better to come to Chicago when the weather is better but some of the best sites to see are indoors. Jeffrey, did you really burn creosoted ties? Or were they treated in another way. The North Western wouldn't allow ties to be disposed of by burning, even back in the day.  Kev, nice wood pile. You'll love that switcher set. It should come with kaydee couplers as a default. My layout is nothing by 027 track - a legacy from my first Lionel train set.  Jon, praying for your day of healing. Jim, great to 'see' you again. Dennisv8, thanks for the advice about the traction tire posting. Hope you and Ray are ok from the big winds.  Jack, I'd recommend your friend start with her carrier - especially if she has a business 'plan.'

Good morning. It's 39° and mostly sunny. The high will be 68° and it will be mostly sunny.

Yesterday morning I took my fathers Mercury Marquis (older of the two they have) to the GM dealership in New Llano so some handycap equipment could be removed from it. It's being traded in on a Chevy hardtop convertible. My mother wanted a BMW but my father (predictably) told her it would be a cold day in h*** when he bought her one of those. So she settled on the Chevy convertible. The only problem I can see with it is that the space between the console and the brake pedal is tight. I can barely get my walking boot to the gas pedal and I'll be the one driving the car quite a bit as my mother can't drive due to health problems that make her a hazard to anything on the road. My boot is five and a half inches wide and the gap it has to fit through is five and three quarter inches. So I told my father yesterday it needs part of the brake pedal removed. Either that or find somebody else to drive her to where she needs to go. If I know my father (and I should, I've only known him for like half a century) he'll get that brake pedal modified so I can drive the car to take my mother to wherever she needs to go for virtually nothing rather than pay somebody to do it. The man's a classic cheapskate and will find any way he can to keep from spending money. Now the fun (depends on your point of view) yesterday started when I got to the car lot. I removed items that my father wanted (Rotary Club plate, sunglasses, paperwork, a couple of blankets, etc) then told the salesman I needed to see someone about getting back some of the money taht had been spent on the extended warranty. It still had two years left on it and that amounted to a couple of hundred bucks. The woman I would have to see about that was busy with a customer but it would only be a few minutes. It would have to be as I had more important things to get done before noon. A few minutes turned to fifteen, then thirty then forty-five. All this time my niece has been waiting for me outside. She was my ride home. Finally the customer left the office and I started toward the door paperwork in hand. It had been close to an hour now. Before I got to the door she called in another customer. That tore it! No way was I waiting around for another hour or more. If my father wanted that warranty cashed in he could darn well do it himself. I had my niece take me back to my parents place where I had left my van earlier. I told my mother what had happened, left the paperwork with her and went about the business of getting gas for my van (took eighteen gallons to top up a twenty-four gallon tank ($55.78 at $3.099 a gallon) then getting two bills paid, buying the groceries and getting back home. I still have to reimburse my father for paying my electric bill and car insurance. After that's done I'll see if I have enough left to send a couple of things out.

Konbanwa,

I got the tree up and rigged up the lights as well.  We sure were spoiled the past few years since our artificial tree is pre-lit, but we put that into storage.  The wife did most of the decorating on the tree; I only hung a few key pieces: a Lionel Pullman car ornament; a Star War X-Wing fighter; and a Darth Vader's fighter.  It rained almost all day so I did not do any decorating outside yet. The inside is finished with the exceptions of the train and lighted ceramic buildings.  It's going to be tricky to place those since space is tight.  The December CTT finally arrived today and I am about to read it; however, it is already midnight here.

Dennis - We bought the tree on base; they were shipped in from Oregon.  However, I have noticed lost of Christmas decorations for sale at the off base stores.  The Japanese were the ones buying all of it as well.  That is a clever idea about the tunnels, thanks.

Sayonara,

Joe

A friend of mine with a small business startup recently moved into a new location and quickly discovered that her cellphone, that of her employee, and those of her customers cannot get adequate signal in her studio, unless they are standing by the front door or near the back of the facility.  So it seems that it is NOT a phone-specific or carrier-specific problem.   Have any of you personally had any luck with one of these cell phone signal boosters?

Jack,

Is the building their in metal or have metal siding? That is the same thing that happens in our shed.

Morning from North Central Illinois,

Cloudy and 32 degrees. Cheerios with raspberries are in the bowel today. Dinner

Got to go to the bank and get a haircut and that is about it for me today.

Dennis, I am with you, I don’t think I have ever cooked anything as the recipes call for.  Laugh

Bob, What a great place to hike, beautiful WOW!!  Yes

Rt, Glad you are feeling better. Take it easy on the leaves.

Chuck, You getting closer to the basement?

V8, K Line Plymouth switchers and ore cars do look neat and I am not knowledgeable about them but guess I will be soon. Nice part about this is the wife was all about the set when I showed them to her and told her I had no idea I would win them for $76.00. She is really getting on board now that the layout is not just trains on plywood.

Banks, and Roy the wood is enough for this year and next year. I like to have it a year dry before burning it. Our fireplace will hold 24" wood. I built the splitter to size for the fireplace so if it fits in the splitter it will fit the fireplace. It draws outside air and has a heat exchanger with a blower but still does not perform like our old wood-burning stove we had in Plainfield. Nobody sells coal out here so that is not an option.

As far as the work goes you are right, it is a lot of work but good work at that. Keeps me moving and is at least some form of exercise. Yeah

Everyone, have a good day,

Kev

CELL PHONE SIGNAL BOOSTERS:

I need help.

It sounds to me like either the nearest cell tower is too far away, is blocked by line of sight, or the building construction is hampering reception.  She asked for my help resolving the problem.

I know Brutus had this problem in his home with his cell phone reception (weak signal) and solved it by buying a cell phone signal booster receiver and retransmitter and installed it with success.  But Jim is otherwise detained and busy down in Mickeyland.

I jumped onto the internet to familiarize myself with these devices and to come up with a cost-effective and practical solution for my friend.  What I found was info that was not as helpful as I had hoped.  Quite a few brands, quite the price spread, mixed professional technical reviews, and of course customer feedback which runs the gamut of "best invention since the wheel" to "don't waste your money."

Have any of you personally had any luck with one of these cell phone signal boosters?

Thank you for your take on this.

Hello all,

TGIF

Crisp, clear 27 degrees here this AM.

Busy week here. Mrs &I are both getting over the Crud.. No hunting after work but will be out tomorrow.

Phish,  keep us posted.

Kev, looks like you've got a good start on this winter's wood. Wood is so much work I primarily burn coal. Now about $120 / ton. Way more heat for way less work.

May start outside decorations this weekend.

Pat, I'm looking forward to sipping a glass of wine while running trains and watching the snow fall outside.(not looking forward to the cleanup afterward)

Bob, Great view

RT,  keep a close eye on that.

SS fund calls

Prayers for those in need

Dennis yes I have A-fib and they keep up on it here. I'm not on insulin I just take pills 2 different ones in the morning and then one at night.

Rt, glad you are keeping up on things.  As I am sure you are aware, you want to avoid clots.  Make sure you keep taking your "blood thinner".  Most of the problems we see is from patients not taking their medicine or following their diet.

Well, the banana bread came out great!  It is a recipie my wife got from a friend.  I never follow the directions completely...had to make it my own way.  Doubled the bananas and didn't sour the milk.  I am thinking of having a slice with some Nutella on it.

Have to get to my daily reading and prayer.  Hope each of you has a blessed weekend ahead,

Dennis
