Prayers for Chuck and Paula.

Howdy guys - busy day for a day I took off from work.  Doctor appointment was good - he said he would not have put her in the hospital based on labs, but better safe than sorry.  Char talked to him about all the issues she had with this "visit".  It was positive, but there was good communication.

I had an 11:30 appointment to get the truck inspections done.  It's a good thing I had an appointment, because I was stuck there for almost 2.5 hours.  I then had to stand in two different lines at the License office - one for tags and one for a new license, since I got my Report of Birth Abroad forms from the State Dept., and thought I would combine trips.  I stopped at Home Depot on the way home and got some Stabil and some washers.  After that, I cooked a meatloaf for dinner and killed some zombies on the xbox for a couple hours. Nice chat with SJ and Charlie Thumbs Up

So glad that none of the potters was hit too hard by the storm and it sounds like things are generally going okay.

Oh Laz - my son is now in HS and he is taking an introductory class that covers wood, plastic and metal working.  Wish I could take it too Smile  Emerson Electric used to make those same saws for Craftsman, I think?  If it's the one I'm thinking of, then my brother-in-law has one, which had a "3 HP Max motor", which was actually like 1.5 constant HP?  It was a good saw and has never had any problems with it, big congrats Smile

TARDIS is ready and Mike is driving, so we better get a move on!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening all,

I've been at the in-laws the past few days and I have only had time to read posts here and there.  I am on leave this week before heading out to AL on the 6th.   I'm glad the hurricane wasn't as bad as initially predicted.  I hope folks can recover soon.  I'll catch up more tomorrow.

Dennis - That sounds great.

Laz – I was hoping the PA kids would win as well.  We enjoy watching the LLWS; I went to it years ago when my LL team won our championship.

Good night,

Joe

Well, two big storms have come through.  All summer we could not "buy" a rain storm.  Now we are having inches.  Pond over flowing and more running in.  No rain forecasted yntil noon.  Suddenly 32 counties under warnings.  Earlier storm [around 5] had sharp lightning [one strick close by], beating rains, winds and hail.  3/4 inch in about 20 minutes.  Now one that has been here for over 2 hours.

Good Morning

Sun and 70s today.

Flipped a coin haircut/shopping, haircut. Had two real BLTs as time is growing short for the real thing. Good to read each of our pot friends checking in from the east coast. Last Monday of August.Crying...S.J.

Both of them or just one got cut.  No more than you have, I'm sure your barber is glad see you.  Takes longer to get you in the chair and back out than to cut those two hairs.  Whistling  BTW: had two BLTs yeaterday for lunch.  Still getting tomatoes but not as many and as large as earlier.  Still good tomatoes.

Prayers for the Yanks.  I just got to see news on NY and New England states.  Sad.

Wife is laughing.  She is watching Lizzard Lick Towing on the True Channel.  They are about 6 miles from Roseyville.  I think it is fake.

Good night.

PS: prayers for Hudson [John] that he will be safe as he works to restore power.

PS: PS: Jsut talked to friend down east at Pinetops [where I am from and where Mom use to live].  Tornado was close but not at their house.  They had 1 1/2 inches for rain in about 30 minutes and lots of hail.  Fred and I are going down there tomorrow morning.  Bet we will not be able to walk around the fields and woods.  Very flat and black soil.

Back home late last night from North Carolina. Chief, I've been there before, and I'm sure I'll return. Virginia and North Carolina are two beautiful states to visit. I've been up and down the Blue Ridge mountains a few times and camping to Assateague Island and New Bern. Nice areas.

On the drive back I saw dozens of trees uprooted along the interstate mostly NC and Va. Then later dozens of electric trucks heading north. As HudsonJohn stated all we got was wind gusts and tidal surge, but we get floods like this every 10 years or so.

Angel ongoing for Chuck and Char and RaySP.

HudsonJohn - That delivery I mentioned probably won't arrive for two more weeks (just so you know).

Laz - Starting a bit early this year? Around here is a good week away.

Glad to be home!

Ray

Good evening everyone.  Glad to hear everyone has weathered the storm.  Long day and another tomorrow.  Just purchased a video surveillence system for the house as there have been some problems with folks breaking into cars and also stealing air conditioner units for the copper.  We have a home security system, but it doesn't protect against outside issues.

Heard some great reports from folks /critics of the latest movie.  We shall see if they keep up the kind words closer to the release date.  Joe, I spoke with my bride and she would like to visit her mother which also allows me to catch up with you in AL.  I will get the information on Dr. John to you soon.

God Bless,
Dennis

Glad to hear all survived the storm so far. I was wishing we would of gotten at least a little of it but not the whole blunt of it as we could of used the rain so if we could of gotten the outskirts of it and some rain I would of been happy.

Lunchtime,

Busy morning coming back from vacation. We have wide spread power outages and the public is being told that your service "may be restored by September 4". A lot of damage has been done to the infrastructure from flooding and wind. We are working around the clock and we have crews from out of state.

The good news is that by some miracle, my family and I escaped any damage. We did prep for the storm, but I did not even get a drop of water in the basement, eventhough people were evacuated less than a 1/2 mile away. I just have a large amount of small branches and leaves that my John Deere Tractor and Cyclone rack should make short work of.

Prayers for Chuck and Char.

Morning all!

Videos on the news this morning show a lot of flood waters and in one place a covered bridge washing away. Looks like a lot of flooded basements.

LAZ - but who's counting - right?

107 here yesterday. Some light rain this morning cooling things down a bit - to 102 this afternoon - and the rain did not amount to much.

Doug M - wish I could take advantage of those Cubs tics - but the drive to the stadium would be a bit too much for me - but maybe a cool evening would be worth it?

Have a great day all!

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Crystal Clear Taxachusetts,

Prayers for those devastated by the weather event.  I wasn't one of them.

Damage on the South shore of Ma. as well as Central and Western MA. was heavy.  Arguably worse for many than 1991's category 2 hurricane Bob which made a direct hit (on me/MA.) with winds of over 100 MPH.   Irene had been downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit MA., so many thought it would not be a catastrophic event.  They were wrong.

The reason for the extensive coastal damage here in MA. was not the winds that accompanied Irene.  It was the unfortunate simultaneous combination of the new moon's exceptionally high tides and the storm surge from Irene.

Inland, the amount of rain that fell Saturday afternoon and throughout Sunday in MA. was far more than the rivers and creeks could hold, over 10 inches in places by some estimates, causing massive flooding.  An oversaturated ground compromised trees and their roots, many that had withstood storms from the past century.  Then the storm with the heavy rains moved into upstate New York and an already soaked/saturated Vermont.

It is true that there are far too many coastal and low lying areas where folks have chosen to build and/or reside.  When I moved here 23 years ago and was looking to buy a house, I spent time investigating local flood planes and 100 year storm information.  I stayed away from the flood planes and chose a new subdivision development and a house a mile off the Atlantic that sat up higher than the rest around me.

I got lucky, but many of my neighbors have not been so blessed.   Who can predict the extent and capacity of the underground water aquifer on what was once farmland?  Or the fact that I have experienced at least three 100 year rainstorms since moving here 23 years ago?   Since this was a new subdivision, there was no info on rising groundwater and the resulting basement flooding.  Many of my neighbors have not been so lucky, spending their savings on uninsured flood damage and water mitigation (sump pumps, drain tile, landscaping changes, and the like).

There but for the grace of God go I.  John Bradford.

Greetings From Post Irene Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Torrential rains at times, lots of local flooding, power outages, closed/collapsed roads, two tidal surges at high tide, and high winds accompanied by downed trees.........but I was lucky near the coast.  No damage and less rainfall than points West of me.  I might have gotten 4 inches of rain, max.

Earlier in the week the forecasters predicted a storm path that was originally supposed to run right over me with 5-10" of rain.  But by yesterday it was apparent the center of the path would keep to a straight North (sort of) path.  So I wound up on the Easterly edge of the storm.  Normally hurricanes turn Northeast and pass Taxachusetts to the East, off the coast.  Irene here wound up being a tropical storm, and winds for me never exceeded 65 mph, gusts to 40 right now.

Rain cleared out about 4PM.  Central and Western MA on the other hand are a disaster, took the brunt of the rain with major river flooding around Worcester and points West and North of there.

More tomorrow.

Jack.

Nothing from the NJ, NY, RI and MA guys ...

Thanks for asking ...

There is historic flooding and damage north & west of New York City, ie on the Western side of the Lower Hudson Valley. Approximately 75 miles of the New York State Thruway is closed in both directions north of the Tappan Zee Bridge (Westchester) due to flooding, mud & rock slides & trees. That is unprecedented & unexpected. Then there is the matter of the similarly impaired secondary arteries. As a result there are thousands of motorists stranded without any ability to approach a 25 mile radius of New York City from the north.  Areas of the Mid Hudson Valley have received 16" of rain this month; that's well over 1/3 of our yearly allotment. We'd be glad to send of few weeks of rain down to our friends & family in the Gulf area.

Good evening everyone.  Had a great day with church and family time.  Morning sermon was on parenting and discipline of our children.  All good stuff.  Took family out for Mexican food as always and got to see some friends.  Every Sunday night, our church has a time of prayer for about a half hour prior to the start of services.  Tonight was no different, and so I got to lift a few up.  Then another great service and finally home.

Fife, glad the boat is OK.  I was watching some footage from Long Island and they had a part of a life guard tower that had crashed into a boardwalk.  Looked like the surge was going to cause some issues up that way.  I texted my dad and he is fine, just taking a little time to rest before going back to dispatching.

Chief, glad you guys are OK.  Saw some news of twisters that had come up with the storms and damaged some buildings a little east of you.  We didn't get any of it.  Heat stayed at 100 and the sky was clear.

Well, time for bed.  Hope the folks up north are OK.  Plan to check in the morning to make sure Y'all come through with no issues.

God Bless,
Dennis

Wifey and I are TIRED.  Got on roof by ladder and cleaned roof with leaf blower.  Then gutters.  Three big truck loads of limbs and leaves.  Then leaf blower on the drive and pad.  Now to use bagging unit to clean up the grass part of the yard.  Pond is full and flowing over the spillway.  Water running in so will probably stay full until next summer.

Nothing from the NJ, NY, RI and MA guys.  Hope all is OK.  Glad the yatchet made it OK.

Off to bed.

Good evening all,

Got the Octoober CTT.  Good issue.  Reffed two u-10 games by myself Saturday and watched "my" soccer girls lose 7-2.  Boys won earlier while I was reffing 2-0.  Wife and I went shopping Saturday.  Mowed, edged, and trimmed the yard today.  Weather was tolerable.  Indy car race was horrible.  Team Red swept the top 5.  Vitor was 22nd.  Swiss Miss could not run due to some Customs Snafu.. Imagine the stink if some foreign golf player could not compete in the Masters or some other event for the same reason.   Hmmmm.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Thanks Bob.  More photos of the cog railroad and Mt. Washington can be seen on my webpage.  The cog was a fasinating ride especially back down the mountain as the brakeman really had to work.  There is so much history around Mt. Washington and the White Mountains.  I hope to go back soon.

Beautiful day up here on the hill.

Continued prayers for Chuck and Paula.

Glad to hear Char is home!

Sounds like the hurricane could have been worse, but prayers for those in it's path.

Buckeye - nice pictures of the cog! Going to have to check that out someday.

Been finding I get tired up here lately. Think I am still re-adjusting to the altitude. Doesn't happen back in Tucson. The 2 months + I was away from the 'scope was the longest time in the 9 years I've been here.  May have to switch back to "leaded" coffee while I am on the mountain.

Afternoon all!

Forum was down for maintenance this morning - at least that is what the message I got said.

105 here right now. Thought about taking the boat out but it is a bit too warm to mess with it today. Besides, the son has homework he is working on (can you believe that?) this afternoon instead of waiting until 11 tonight to start. He is applying to colleges and I think he is motivated (about leaving home Bow).

Glad you easterners (so far) did not get hit too bad by the storm and Fifer - hope the yatchet is OK.

Brutus - that is great news about Char. Got to be hard to have to always expect the worst and I am certainly happy it has been going your way! We will keep those prayers coming regardless.

Will keep the prayers and positive thoughts for Chuck and his family.

John Baker - good to have your regular posts again. Always nice to have info from our far east coast.

Our lakes are going down pretty seriously. Cannot pump water from the largest reservoir here as zebra mussels have been found there and they are trying to keep them out of the rest of the reservoirs here. Say they can pump in the winter when the mussels are not reproducing. The northern reservoirs pump into the lower reservoirs closer to Dallas. They also have a problem where the water temp in a couple of lakes used for power plant cooling is getting too warm and they are having to cut back. And the good news is a new La Nina has appeared in the Pacific so we can expect the dry weather and drought to continue into next year. So the Pacific cools and we overheat - is there a net zero effect here?

Have a great afternoon all!

Regards, Roy
