BRENT use the cloth diapers.  You'll be going green just like my MOM did 55 years ago and she didn't know she was going green.

PRAYERS for CHUCK and PAULA.

Stay frosty,

Brent -- thanks for the pic's and updates, she's a "keeper" for sure!!  We also used cloth diapers 35 years ago as money was very tight, guess we didn't know we were going green :)

Demay --  thank you for your service to our country, trust me--it's appreciated.  Sure hope the deployment goes well for you and your family, what a great opportunity for all of you.

Laz -- enjoy your "last" pre school inservice meetings, I loved checking off those "lasts" my final year.  It's quite enjoyable watching those final months go bye bye.

Trying to get caught up here after being gone for a week, our youngest son and I take a trip on the bikes every summer and it is without question, the best week of the summer.  This was our 6th trip, sure hope there's 6 more for me.  Even though he's a newlywed he explained to his new wife how important these trips are and she's 100% behind him.  Next trip for me this fall is to Colorado for two weeks on the bike, going solo, wish we could have a 2nd home in SW Colorado, love that part of the country.

Good morning,

Prayers for Chuck & Paula.

Spent yesterday at the Etown Fair.  Grandkids didn't do as good as usual.  Granddaughter won a first in showmanship and a neighbor girl won a grand championship with her goat which is out of my Son and DIL herd.  She will be back on Wednesday when they select the best of Show from all the breed winners.  Today is the beef competition.

I to have picked up a liking for tinplate, although I prefer the new stuff which runs much better than the originals.  Have two trains at present, both by MTH.

Aloha. Looks like big storms rolling in. Joe, I had a blast finding and running N gauge when in Asia - it is very very popular in Japan. Brent, what a lovely photo! Agree with Dennis (and everyone) that daughters are special - adopted or biological. I'll be taking her back to college this weekend. Hope to spot some nice trains in Tiffin. Congrats on your daughter's milestone, BrutusJohn, I love love love tinplate.

Speaking of trains, has anyone ever done a rail-grinder in O? That would be something. There was a long unit in North Ave. yard this morning. UP is probably doing the Harvard sub soon.

Good Morning

64/80s today.

We used cloth diapers for all 3 of our kids. Used throw- a- way's  only when we went somewhere. Once you have a routine it works just fine. Agree daughters are special, I keep asking granny if we can have another(got 1)but she boldly says NO. Eggs, real potatoes and 1 toast this morning, means I'll skip lunch..S.J.

Mornin' Fellas.

Not much going on these days... just really enjoying fatherhood.

Angel for Chuck

Good Mornin' Ya'll from Crystal Clear Taxachusetts,

Continued prayers for Chuck's recovery and for strength for Paula.  Angel

Brent........I had to laugh at the "Lionel train box on the porch" exchange between you and the Q.  Great pics too!  The advantage of the disposable diapers is that, at will, you can hide the ones with the heavier odiferous loads under the car seats of people you don't like.  Smile, Wink & Grin  Dennis, Rich, JoeyD and DougM have it right......children are gifts from above that keep on giving.  Thumbs Up  And I agree with SJ.......digital files are great..... until you lose them, forever.  Part of our approach is an external drive to back up the PC, including pictures.  But in case of a fire or heaven forbid a burglary, external off-site file storage might be better.

Brutus.........congratulations on your daughter attaining official teen status!  Usually at this point the "fun " begins, testing your patience, guile, and your wallet. Laugh  AF Ray and Dennis said it pretty well.  I recall the day my daughter got married and she came to me crying, tears pouring down her face.  WTF is wrong I thought to myself while trying to listen to her words.  She was just thanking me for being her father and for all of the things her Mom and I did for her growing up, including some of the not so pleasant ones.

JoeyD.........when we went through the cloth versus disposable diaper decision, I figured in all of the costs, including time. Mega wear and tear on the washer and the dryer.  Laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, hot water, and electric.  Not to mention the incredible time used up during the entire processing routine.  We went disposable.  Ever get stuck out on the road with the family and tried to figure out where in the car to put the soiled cloth diapers? Big Smile

RaySP..........hope your back isn't barking at you today.  About 11 years ago I learned to sleep on my back, and it has helped a lot!

Jon..........that's the one thing I regret, not having a hobby long-term I could share with my son, like your  taking those bike trips with your son.  My son never got into trains, though I tried.  And going out shooting at a range isn't my idea of memorable time together, unless of course I outshoot him. Wink

LAZ............glad to hear you are counting the days until retirement.  You had better save some of those massive home projects for post retirement or the Wifey will fill in the time for you with hers.  Whistling

JohnB.........you did a terrible job piloting the Tardis last night.  Just a reminder......the controls are all on the left, and you have to stay right.  Smile, Wink & Grin

DougM.........what possessed you to buy an electric lawn mower?  Surprise

Later, gang!!!!

Jack

Just got a call from the Chief asking for advice.  Seems the earthquake was centered NE of Charlottesville, Virginia.  Web reporting 5.9 magnitude.

Told Chief to check toilets to make sure there was still standing water in them, (in case of emergency).  Then realized he is at the lake, then to check the outhouse to ensure it is still on the foundation.

Should expect some aftershocks for the next 24-36 hours.  Recommend staying outside as much as possible, if in the car, it will feel like 4 flat tires.  But should be OK.

Prayers and thoughts continue for Chuck and Paula!

Hope all you stay safe from Irene.

God Bless

Don

I haven't checked with my relatives in Suffolk, Virginia yet but expect that they had no damage with their homes.  5.8 is a strong shock but nothing like a 6.8.  At that level you can expect some major damage.  Here in the land of shake and bake we are used to these shakes but I'm sure it was alarming to folks on the East Coast.  TV is reporting some damage in Washington to the top of the National Cathedral spires.  That stone work was probably pretty fragile to begin with and I doubt the builders ever thought of an earthquake there.  Expect a few aftershocks but they are usually less intense than the initial one.  You guys will be fine.

I think the cows are now giving milk shakes. The calves take the milk direct, but the do seam to be nursing harder and faster now.Laugh

We are about 25 miles from the quake center. No damage. Some of Laura's nick-knacks on the kitchen ceiling shelf came down. I was mowing the grass and didn't feel a thing. But then the mower shakes and shimmies like an ongoing quake.

Good evening everyone.  Brent, she is beautiful!  As to diapers, we went disposable as we were on the road so often.  Had a early case after my bible study.  A lunch meeting with some folks from the production company....after all that, I may have matched just one morning being as busy as the Chief.

Joe, perhaps we can catch up, it may mean that I have to visit the MIL....but the bride will be happy.

Hope everyone has a blessed night,
Dennis

Had a call from sister in Suffolk, Virginia.  Said they were rocking and rolling but everything is OK and no damage.

Took a two and a half hour nap this afternoon to give back a rest.  Took wife to hospital this morning for outpatient bone density test.  Just that little effort kind of tuckered me out.  However we had to get up earlier than usual so maybe that was it.

Brent, congratulations on a beautiful daughter.  Don't remember much about the diapers since it has been over 45 years but I think we had the diaper service at one time.  Maybe they didn't have disposables then.

More prayers for Chuck Angel Hang in there Blueberry.

Hello all,

More prayers for Chuck & family.

The quake felt like a couple of severe wind gusts hit our building one right after the other. Lasted maybe 10  or 15 seconds. No damage done.

Ray, why to you check to make sure there is water in the toilet?

Busy trying to get ahead of the weeds in the garden this evening. Corn seems to have recovered from the dry. Will be a small crop but not a total loss. The jury is still out on the soybeans but it looks promising. Deer have come back to work the 'beans. A 12 gauge charge of #6 BB's from about 200 yards puts the runs to them each evening

Off to bed.

Prayers for those in need

Good Evening

77 now.

Didn't feel the quake here although some say they did. Didn't feel the last one in Ohio either but saw the water start to sway in the toilet and knew what it was.It was a nice day to cut grass and start the dreaded outdoor plans for winter. Banilla is ready, gonna have to go out soon and restock. Fire up the thingy, I am ready.

What a day! We only get this small vibration avery decade or so. I was talking to another office some 15 miles away when the other person said "the building just shook" I said so did ours. We quickly hung up and our building was evacuated for about 15 minutes, ho hum.

JoeD - Looks like I will settle for DJ to break a tie with Carew and them tie Henderson, I'll take that anyday. Back in the 70's I thought Carew was like a migician with a bat in his hand, an awesome hitter.

Chuck and Paula are in our prayers.

Char has a doctor appointment tomorrow as she has some kind of rash on her arm after they changed her medicine.  Should just be a minor blip in the road though.  They put her back to the higher levels on the immunity drug until after they see her.

Tardis is ready and we have banilla as well as Mike N Ikes and Bottlecaps, so let's hit it boys!

Good evening all,

I’m glad everyone is okay from the quake.  The lodging on base ran out of rooms today so I had to move to an off-base hotel.  The only one that had rooms available is a Days Inn and it is not very clean.  I've had some offers from friends to stay with them, but I hate to impose.  I'm sure I can handle a couple of nights in a dingy hotel room.  At least it has free wireless internet (which quit while I was typing).

Cloth diapers have come a long way since my mom used them on us.  The washing machines and dryers have gotten better too.  We have high efficiency models and special laundry detergent for the cloth diapers and our costs are still well below disposals.  My wife bought a special bag to hold soiled diapers until we got back home – I think Jack and Brutus have weak stomachs Whistling.  For long trips away from home we do use disposable diapers.

jonadel - Thanks for the support.  The family and I are very excited about moving to Japan.

jefelectric - What MTH tinplate sets do you have?

Dennis - I will be there six weeks and would be happy to help you see your MIL.  I should have plenty of free time.  Do you still have my mobile number?

AF Ray - Beggars can't be choosers.  Rod Carew was a great hitter; DJ is hitting extremely well and should be able to break the tie.

Brutus - I hope all goes well with Char.

Continued prayers for Chuck and his family.

Good night,

Joe

Morning all.  About to head in.  Only have a bunch of minor cases to do, but I have some work to do with our bypass circuit.  Have a meeting with one of the reps that supply our hospital.  Regarding the quake, I don't think it came this far south.  I have been in one when I was taking my board exam in California....I was not impressed, of course I had something important to focus my attention.  I guess with all the heat and the quake on the east coast, Don will now be calling the Chief "Shake-N-Bake Too!"

Joe, I am sure I can find it with a little effort, I didn't erase it.  You may want to send it again.  While you are there, in a city called "Prattville", they have a Bass Pro Shops, that may be a good place to take the family for a visit.  One of our friends from the forum here is a preacher there.  His name is Dr. John.

Well, time to get going.  Have a Blessed day.

Hi GUYZ,

  Prayers for PAULA and CHUCKAngel.

2nd day of in service.  Got a mile run and small workout in already.  Then after school take MINNIE foe another run.  Never felt DA QUAKE.  Last QUAKE I felt was in CALIFONIA in '86 a nice 6.2 that lasted about 12 seconds.  Now that was fun shook us out of bed at about 3AM.  Funny thing was right before the quake I woke up to coyotes and dogs barking, then all went silent even the crickets stopped chirpping.  Then was done all started again.  Funny how animals sense these things before we do.

Stay frosty,

Banks, I think it was D.Baker who mentioned checking the water in the toilet.  He was refererring to the water in the toilet TANK which would be clean water and could be used in emergency for drinking if the water pipes to your house got broken.

No news is good news for Chuck. Angel

Another bad night with the back pain.  Woke up about 6 times.  Took another dose of Alieve this morning and feel better since I got up.  Took Jack's advice and tried sleeping on back.  It helps a little but I'm not used to it yet.

............No news is good news for Chuck. Angel

Another bad night with the back pain.  Woke up about 6 times.  Took another dose of Alieve this morning and feel better since I got up.  Took Jack's advice and tried sleeping on back.  It helps a little but I'm not used to it yet.

later,

Ray

Ray.....also put a pillow under both your knees.  That is supposed to take pressure off of your back muscles (and hence your spine) while you sleep and keeps you straight/aligned.  Also, make sure the sheets and blankets at the foot end of the bed are very loose so your feet point more vertically, not horizontally.  It took me a while to get used to sleeping on my back after sleeping on my side for about a half century, but it was worth the improvement I experienced with my back.

Thankfully, when I had my first (and hopefully last) horrendous sciatica episode 11 years ago, we had a nice firm bed mattress (sp?).  I had fallen asleep on the couch the previous night and woke up the next morning virtually paralyzed.  The soft couch cushions must have done me in, along with the fact that my rear end had sunk down between the two cushions.  Somehow the muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications eventually took hold........but it took weeks for my back to stop barking.  Left leg and left side posterior didn't feel too good either.

I also got into the habit of doing back stretching exercises first thing in the AM and right before bedtime.  If I had an off day, I would sit in a tub of hot water, as hot as I could stand, for about 15 minutes right B-4 bedtime.  Every little bit helped.  I wanted to avoid disc surgery.

The Orthopedic Doc gave me a regimen of stretching, back strengthening, and stomach strengthening exercises which I did faithfully......told me my stomach muscles were just as important as the back muscles in supporting my back.

He also observed I had to loose some weight, told me I looked pregnant.  Surprise  Had to cut down (not eliminate) on the good stuff:  Beer and Dinner.  It took me months because I don't believe in fad/crash diets Whistling and didn't want to put my body into shock.  Dropped 30 pounds in about 8 months as I recall, a lot of it with portion control.  I was also taking in a zillion empty calories a day (Cheetos, Kit Kats, Hostess cupcakes and Twinkies, ice cream, beer, high test soda, real butter and sour cream, etc.).  And I ramped up the exercise.

Started meals off (15 minutes before) with 16 ounces of water, then a large salad before every dinner.  Had to consciously eat much slower too as I used to shovel food into my mouth like someone was going to take it away from me.  Lots of little things, but it all added up.

I still don't have 6-pack abs of steel like the ChiefWhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin
