Break in the temperature today - only in the low 90's.  Was able to mow the shady parts of the lawn just before dusk and not sweat myself into a pile of salt.

Picked the first tomatos Friday.  Nothing beats a tomato fresh off of the vine.

Interesting sermon title was posted on the sign in front of the church down the road - "If you think it is hot here".

All for now.

Evening All !

Had a great weekend, the weather here has been really great.  Mid/Low 80's.  I didn't make it out to the Train Show this weekend either.  It was in Pomona, but that's about 45-50 miles one way.  Worked at local swap meet today, did OK.

FIL, took his car in to get a checkup for the trip to Wisconsin.  He read an AARP magazine that if the tires are supposed to be rotated, mark them so you can verify.  Sure enough they were not.  Then when he contacted the Service Manager, they gave my FIL a bad time.  So going to take it over to my mechanic.  (Since I have him on retainer anyway.)

"My printer is out of ink again. I hardly ever use it. Its a Dell 924. I sure am not ancious to spend $50 for ink but I will have to someday. It seems like it must cost .50 or more per print. Some people print anything trivial they want with out any concern of the ink cost. I know I am cheap but still annoys me this ink price."

Dennis, the Dell is one of the most expensive printers to own.  Everytime you turn the printer on or off it uses ink to maintain the ink supply lines.  Send me an email, and I can direct you toward some more cost effective alternatives.

Still havn't started working on my G-Scale dogbone, HOPEFULLY this next week.  Wife's trip to Wisconsin is going to be for 4 weeks, so surly should be able to get it done then.

Hope every one has a great day tomorrow.

Good evening all,

Don, that was a real rip off on the tire rotation for your FIL.  That would make me mad too.

V8 vega,  I sympathize with the printer ink problem.  I finally got a Brother laser printer which prints only one  color for about $100 at Best Buy.  It does not use ink and goes indefinetly without it.  You do have to replace something (I forget what) at some point but I have used it for several months now and it is still going strong.

Roy, congratulations on the 25th and many more.

#1 son is bringing over cockateal tomorrow morning for us to baby sit for a week while they are on vacation.  That bird gave me a fit last time about getting back in the cage.  Son says he responds better when you hold out a perch for him.  He used get on your finger but doesn't do that anymore.

Don, it must be more comfortable down your way.  It is staying pretty hot up here.  Do you know a good auto paint shop?  My Honda has taken a beating being outside all the time since my trains occupy the garage.  I have read a lot of horror stories about car painting and don't want to get burned.

Have a good week y'all,

Ray

Don,

I use an HP C3180 photo printer, copier, all singing and dancing thingy. Had it six years, software updates keep up, I use two machines, one has Windows XP and the other 7. No problems. We pay up to about $30.00 for a multy colour cartridge, this includes 20% plus taxes. I recon you might pay about $20.00, or even less for recycled stuff.

Dennis ( V8) I don't do a lot of printing but I use a lexmark X5070 and it cost me about $35.00 to replace both cartridges and it lasts me quite a while now Kodak claims to have a very inexpensive copier as in cost per copy but not sure contact don baker as he asked you to he can really get you going in the right direction

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 90s again.  No rain again and nothing forecast until next weekend.... maybe.  Did not mow this weekend and will not again until we get some good rains.  I hope this weather pattern breaks sometime soon.   Not a good situation and it appears to be countrywide.  Work will be extremely busy this week.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cloudy and humid 72 degrees. This has got to be the worst summer for weather, that I have seen in a long time. Going up to 86 today with a chance of thunderstorms.

Today is a busy day. Dog to groomers for a bath and trim. Chores to do and then, an errand to run. Maybe, I'll get a short nap this afternoon.

Dining car rolled in from "Points West". We are having Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Monday.

Hi GUYZ,

Weather is exactly like CHUCKs here in Millersburg, Pa.  Ran only a 2 miler because I ran yesterday afternoon when it was 90 out.  Not bad but want to take a break this week and only do 7 days of 2 milers, just to give my bones a break.  Going to get started now on another wall of stone veneering.  Thats my game for today.  After this wall then I have the big wall to do and thats alot of bevel cutting.  Oh well you know this lazy teacher will git r done.

Stay frosty,

Good Morning

75 now, looks like 90 is the game plan for the week. Still no rain and none in sight. No grass cutting in my yard. Brown grass doesn't grow much. Egg/bacon sandwich for breakfast and we are off to the store. July is almost gone. Why are the summer months so much shorter than the winter ones...S.J.

Aloha. Continued prayers for Cathy and Daddy Bill. Back to work after two weeks at the South Carolina shore. I feel very fortunate to have been able to put that together. Good ride home yesterday from Frankfort KY (halfway). Put 2,500 miles on the Kia and it drove very well, though I echo Fife - folks drive crazy in bad weather... and good weather. I still don't know why every now and then on I-26 by RT's hometown, the whole highway stops - for up to half-an-hour then starts up again - and there's no accident or construction. One of my professor friends says it has to do with physics and the number of the cars on the road. Go figure.

Came home to a flooded basement though - a lightwell leaked - and the dogsitter never noticed. The trains were OK but the carpet, airhockey table and a lot of kids stuff are sunk. I worked as long as I could taking things up to the garage to toss later. Boy, that carpet is heavy. I'll need to ask someone to help lug it out. I made the mistake of rolling it up. Now have to unroll it and cut it into strips I can manage. Ah well - back to working for Chief's SS.

Don Baker is the wizard of all things printers! He helped me find a great one - an Epsom - a few years back. Yes  Roy, happy belated anniversary. I'd like to visit BC someday. Dallas too for that matter. Big Smile

Good Morning,

Ray, Your right plus we get the benefit of the evening ocean breeze, it comes up about 4:30 daily and is extremely pleasant.  (Have a concrete river channel behind our house, and it is not impeded.)  Regarding the paint job, when Chris did the boo-boo on his Honda, the front end including both fenders, hood and bumper was $138.  It really looks great.  Will ask the mechanic today for shop information.

John, the HP Cartridges here seel for $22.95 for both.  HP has done a little trick on their printers, they have globalized them for specific markets.  The cartridges have a 2 digit suffix that denotes the market they are intended for, and you can only use those cartridges in your printer.  (Example, The HP #92, is C9362WN, the W denotes the capacity, and N the market.  N- North America, E - Europe, S- South Amereica, and A Asia.  If you put something other than the correct regional cartridge in, the printer won't recognize it. -- Tricky heh?)

Taking FIL car in for check up today, will waint and see what else comes up.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Don

Good Morning all

Got back in last night from a vacation in Hatteras North Carolina.  Poured a couple of times on the way home.  Real nice there, HOT, but spent most of the week in the water.  The kids loved it.  Now time to clean up and rest up from vacation.

Laz- I put the stone veneer on our foundation when I was matching the addition to the original house.  I used a grout bag for the joints and it worked really great.

Dennis – I’ll get the article mailed out to you this week.

May God bless

Jim

Mornin' fellas and gals:       Cloudy and warm here.   Lotsa prayers for those poor people in Norway.  So sad. There is evil in the world. Bad things happen when good people stand by and do nothing.  We see it every day but most of the time we don't get involved. I'm probly the worst offender, but i'm workin' on it.    On a lighter note; more prayers for Cathy and John's friend, i'm sure they'll be ok.   V8; your not cheap, just frugal........like me!     Roy; 25 years, that's swell.  Great example of longevity for the kids. Congas!       Doug; what the heck is a light well?     later.

A light well is a small window in a basement wall that lets light in or an emergency exit I guess. It leads to a screened 'hole' - This one of course doesn't have a drain at the bottom of it - and in Chicago's worst rain ever this weekend, the cover leaked, the hole or well filled up like and the window leaked too. Sad

Good morning all,

I ran six miles this morning before the sun was fully up but I should have went to sleep sooner last night.  My body needs a nap now.  I have a busy day in the office today which is fine with me due to the heat.

Fife - Welcome back.  You and I are in agreement about the NFL players.  And since I will be in Japan in a few months I will be able to find better ways to spend my Monday mornings and afternoons.

AF Ray - I'm glad your wife is home and I hope they find out the cause soon.

Vega Dennis - We have an HP 4600 All in One.  It prints, scans, copies, and faxes (we don't use that function).  In over two years of steady use I have only changed the color cartridge once and the black cartridge twice.  The cartridges are about $17 each.

Roy - Congratulations on the anniversary.  It sound like you had a great time.

Doug - That is a sad way to end your vacation.  I hope the cleanup is quick and not too costly.

Good day,

Joe

Greetings Ya'll From Cooler and Overcast Taxachusetts,

Been missing in action the past few days with day trips up to Maine and New Hampshire Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  When you glance at the thermometer and it says 98 in these here parts, you are approaching record temps.  Boston hit 103 a couple of days ago, missed a record high by a degree or two, was 90 degrees at 9:30PM that night.  Out on the road with the asphalt helping things along the temps were hitting 106, highest I have ever seen on the car's thermometer.  That is all behind us for the time being, and our temps are allegedly going to remain around the low 80s for a time.  No rain forecast, and the lawn stopped growing.  Neighbors with irrigation systems were doing fine until their landscapers scalped their grass.

Like many of youse guyz, we didn't have A/C in our house growing up in the 50s.  As kids, our folks would open the door in the AM to turn us loose for the day.  Mom would make sure we were still alive when we came home to refuel and hydrate at lunch and dinner......but not all of this hoopla and dire warnings you see in the news.  I suppose as kids we weren't dumb enough to overdo things......just grab someones' garden hose for water breaks and for hosing each other down wherever we were.  Then we were good to go again, spending most of the blast furnace hours hanging out in the shade somewhere.

Those of us with train layouts in our (cooler) basements didn't need an adult to tell us hanging out there might be a good idea to beat the heat.  Only Mom and Dad had a window A/C unit, in their bedroom, adding one in a small TV room a couple of years later.  No A/C in our cars either until 1962 when my Dad finally decided he deserved it.  Central air followed in the mid 60s.  Before then, those huge reversible window fans were the order of the day (and night).  Dad and I got a couple of decades of good laughs reminiscing about the time we were installing one of the A/C units in a window and dropped it right out the window!  Mom was not amused. Smile, Wink & Grin

Red Sox may get two of their starting pitchers back (Lester and Buchholz) within a week or so.  Maybe then they can catch those Bronx Bums and make a race out of this.  Laugh  Sorry, JoeyD and AF Ray.......couldn't resist.

AF Ray.........hope your wifey is back to near normal  Prayers continue.  Banks, hope your Mom's treatment is coming along as well.  DougDG, patience my good man......your body is like a fine, vintage Ferrari and requires some expert tweeking to get it running just right again.  JohnnyB......prayers for your upcoming procedure across the pond.  We hear so much about cueing and waiting for procedures over here with national health care abroad.  RaySP and RT, hope you two are feeling better as well.......must be the grits. Whistling  RT.......you also have my prayers that your friend  "Daddy Bill" is out of the woods and will be home soon.

JimSP........good to hear your NC vacation with the kiddies was fun and memorable.  I remember those Summer vacations driving with the family when I was growing up more than almost anything else. Thumbs Up

Dennis and JoeyD..........missed your kiddies' birthdays.  Happy B-Day  Sometimes those parties can be quite taxing........on the adults.  Wink

ROY.......happy belated 25th wedding anniversary.  Bet the wifey was absolutely thrilled with your choice of venues for the trip.  Thumbs Up

Fife.........welcome home.  "Home is the sailor home from the, uh, er .......land."  Pirate  Your account of the folks stopping on Interstate 95 in the middle of a rainstorm reminds me of the time my in-laws joined my wife and I for a road trip down to Laz' neck of the woods South of Harriburg PA. for one of my son's school weekends.  The skies turned black as nightime in the mid afternoon, and the rain was as heavy as I had ever seen.  This was accompanied by high, driving winds.  I drove with the flashers on behind a semi as you suggested because stopping and getting smashed from behind seemed like a terrible, life- ending alternative.  When we got to Carlisle, we checked into our hotel and then hit the hotel bar for a couple of frosties.  There was a lot of buzz amongst the patrons in the bar over the TV news.  Apparently we had driven through not one but three tornadoes that had crossed our path.  Surprise

DougM........welcome home to you as well.  Hope the trip in your new Kia ride has you convinced that your choice of new vehicles was spot on!!!!  Sorry to hear that you were greeted with a basement flood on your return.  Once the drains get clogged at the bottom of those basement window wells and the covers start leaking, basement seepage and floods are sure to follow.  Those metal well inserts have a tendency to corrode above and below ground level as well, and the rain just pours in from the "buried" holes in the sides.  The permanent fix is to dig up and replace the whole thing and unclog the pipes/drain in the process, pretty expensive.  Bet your sump pump pit is filled with mud to boot.  Heard you got 8 inches of rain yesterday!

Fife and RT..........we rented a Chevy Tahoe for a family road trip to Chicago a couple of years back.  We needed the capacity.  There was nothing not to like about that SUV, but we opted not to buy one because for everyday use it was just too big.

Later, gang!!!!!!!

Jack.

Hello all,

Busy Hot weekend,

Getting some rain finally this AM. Son spent last couple of days pumping water from a couple abandoned wells on the property. He needs to water his corn and pumpkins he sells for fall decorations. Afraid to use the well at the house. We fear the field corn is too far gone to be productive. We shall see how today's rain effects it. We are feeding the hay now that we'd normally sell this winter Thumbs Down

Lunch Time,

A bit more comfortable with temps in the 80's. It is to progress to the 90's during the week.

Don, That is a common scam that was pulled on your father in law.  Another scam to be aware of is the fake oil change, the pay for the synthetic and get cheap oil, the wipe the oil filter and not change it. too many scammers out there.

Doug, Sorry to hear about the flood. That could happen to anyone.

Thoughts and Prayers for all in need.

Afternoon Fellas.

Still in MD. Had my ortho appt this morning and had 6 teeth slenderized to make room for realignment. Only 14 more weeks of dental work to go! No more overlapping teeth.

I got the rest of the plywood put down on the layout on Saturday, installed temporary ceiling tiles, and test ran the WM Challenger, Chessie GP-30 triple head, and the B&O E7s - found a couple spots where clearance needs to be addressed - will work on that once I have the ceiling tile sub roadbed installed. Still have to work on the transition track from level 1 to level 2. That is next. But in all I'm really liking the new flow! Can't wait to get the track finished so I can start on the scenery. I may actually get around to finishing this layout before we move!

Thanks for asking! Hot and humid. We do get a shower once a week. Keeps the pastures going. Haven't had to feed hay yet. Are you still feeding hay?

I pulled a Chief and put the soker on the garden. Even so, the intense heat is cutting the life of the squash, cucumbers, tomatos, and peppers.

Took a load of 6-7s to market just before the weather turned hot. That helped the grazing.

Afternoon fellas and gals;     Rainin' like cats and doggies here!    Yahoo!  Please, don't stop the rain.........for a while!    Hey Doug; i gotcha now.  Got three of them myself.  I calls 'em window wells.   Got drainage and all, extra thick special window covers, extra thick curved galvanized corregated metal barriers  Never had a leak from 'em .....yet!   Knock on wood!   However did you ever know someone who was so smart that he outsmarted hizz-self?   That'll be ME! Bang Head  Had my water line for the ice maker blow out!  Half on the layout, half on the floor! Got rid of the sub-floor, got rid of the rugs, whew!  Changed the plastic line to copper. Now the world can turn again, until of course the next bone headed  thing i do rears it's ugly head!  Then it's back to the drawing board!        later.

Afternoon all!

106 here today. 24 days in a row over 100 and >100 predicted for next 8 days. 32 total days over 100 so far this year. Looks like this year will move up to #2 hottest behind 1980. Low tonight will be 83. Flew over the Tetons on way back from Vancouver last Thurs and the amount of snow was amazing. Don't know if you guys caught the news back on the 4th, but Lake Tahoe was open for July 4th skiing - first time since 96. Don and DougdG - send some of that snow our way would ya?

Fife - those photos only reinforce that you can dress it up but it is still a <fill in the blank>.

John - prayers for your friend also.

Dealing with the almost 18 year old (Doug M can relate) and cigars - always something...

Dood - I am with you - I avoid plastic lines whenever possible but I gave in under the kitchen sink (but they are the stainless braid reinforced lines). My ice maker line is copper also - had to fight the refrigerator delivery guys a few years ago over that. Told them I would take care of it if it was too difficult for them to reconnect the copper line without kinking it.

Have a great evening all!
