Buckeye!!! ---> Angry I have the day off, but thanks to you, I shall be cleaning the coffee, that shot out my nose, from my computer screen and keyboard.

Thanks.

Buddy.

I miss Buckeye's edits of The Chief's posts! Glad I wasn't drinking when I started reading it!

---

I've made good progress on the curved stone arch bridge for the layout. Have the upper and lower curves cut and shaped, the end risers are attached, and the outer skin has been applied. The 1/8inch ply didn't bend as nice as I had hoped and there is some splintering at a couple corners. I have the arches laid out, the supports cut, and I have started placing the supports where they need to be located. Next is to finish installing the supports, then add some carpentry staples to the outer skin where the supports are located. Then attach the inner skin. After that I'll cut out the arches, fill the rough spots with filler, then figure out how to cap the inside of the arches. I'm thinking a thin, but firm card board??? After than has been done I'll smooth them out with a thin coat of spackle. Paint the insides of the arches flat black. I am leaning toward buying the flexible stone wall sections from Scenery Express and using these to skin the outside. I'll have to cut the arches out, but that won't be a big deal. The only concern I have is dressing out the arch edges so they look correct. Thinking about getting the seam concealers to build out the supports as well...

Morning all!

Started snowing last night about midnight. Woke up to about 4-6 inches at my house. Still snowing very lightly. Roads as shown on the tube are not good, but little traffic. Might get above freezing tomorrow afternoon. The high temp quoted for Super Bow; Sunday keeps dropping. Down into the 40's now (from 60 quoted earlier this week!).

A veritable winter wonderland here! I have not had a chance to speak to my sister in Houston but they were supposed to get some sleet/snow also.

Schools claosed today again - 4 days in a row - the son is loving it. My daughter is not - has not been called to work since Tuesday.

Brent - good to hear you are getting work done on the layout!

Have a great day all!

Good Mornin' Ya'll from A Sunny Frigid 7 Degree Taxachussetts,

Since December 26 we have had 2 blizzards, another three major snow events, interspersed with a few 4 inch dustings, etc.......perhaps 80-90" total snowfall versus an annual average of 42".  And there is another 5 weeks to go before we are out of the woods.

It hasn't just been the snowfall totals.  We have had terrible drifting due to the high sustained winds which accompanied many of the snow events.

Temperatures have been consistently running below the normal highs and lows for this time of year, including a few uncharacteristic stints in the single digits, three days below zero, and one minus day that was the coldest recorded in 6 years.  Consequently, there has been very little snow dissipation to speak of for what has already fallen.

The driveway looks like I should name it the RI52 Memorial Tunnel.  The mounds at the end of the driveway stand majestically at an impressive 11' and 9', respectively.  The continuous snowbank from the driveway to the front porch and stairs stands boob high (technical term).   The snow mounds off the back deck stand at an impressive 8 feet.  For six straight weeks the weather has dominated the local news, ad nauseum.

So after consecutive weeks of this onslaught, and with another major snow event on tap for tomorrow, it was not until this very morning that the wife wakes up and out of the blue asks me in an alarmed tone:  "How much snow is on our roof?  Is the dryer vent clear?  Are our water pipes going to freeze?  How is the oil guy going to make it to the rear of the house to refill our heating oil tank?"  Bang Head Bang Head Bang Head

I know what you are thinking, and you would be correct.  She's blond.  Whistling Big Smile

Aloha all. Wow, Jack 7 degrees. That's sure balmy. It's (tap, tap) 3 here and 15 below with the lake breeze. Mayor Daley must be retiring since there's huge piles of snow all over the Loop. Ah well. Glad to be out of the house and back at work. Ran the wheels of the 520, Percy, James and Thomas last eve. Just a few pile ups as Percy likes to derail on a certain curve pulling a heavy train, causing 'confusion and delay.'

The bride made plans for us to go to some play Sunday -- during a certain game.  "Oh, is that this weekend?" Yes, she's blond too.  Big Smile

Yea! - it's snowing again - might quit by noon!

News is making fun of all the light weight sports cars jamming up the roads - so far:

SNOW - 3

Mustang - 0, Camaro - 0, Porche Boxster - 0

The light weight crossover SUVs are not faring much better...

The nasty stuff is just coming in from the SW in the form of heavy rain and strong winds.Grumpy

Fortunately for us the Atlantic takes some of the chill and sting from your storms. I've had to keep the house lights on all day, forecasters say the worst will hit Saturday-Sunday. Sou'wester and wellies for my stroll to the Grapes.Beer

On the trains front, my arthritis has deteriorated in my hands and am I no longer able to assemle Lionel (my home is very small and Lionel has to be run on the floor, no room for bench work). I don't really want to sell up, but it is a shame to keep it sterile and boxed when some one could get pleasure from it.Crying

Hello: laughed at your missive on blondes. years ago we were invited to a family function, wedding or engagement .   yes and you guessed it, happened to be on big game day., how odd? now these people, who will remain nameless, (wifeys relatives)  wouldn't  know a football from a coconut! not the sporting type. needless to say one big brouhaha ensued.  well now the test of wills began!  back and forth, forth and back we did go. what a contest!!  Bang Head  the immovable object (me) against the irresitable force (her).    a battle not seen since Grant took Richmond. (sorry Chief ...not)    well finally the big day came and i was exhausted, ready to give in when Divine Providence stepped in. the weather made a turn for the worse and snow was on the way. yipee! i was saved by the bell. of all the times i have been called in for work, this was the best!  we still laugh about this at every super bowl.  hair color does not determine a woman's thought process, and no, she's not a blonde !    Laugh

Hello all,

Thankfully the severe freezing rain that was predicted here on Tuesday and Wednesday turned out to be minimal. Temperatures this winter here have been near average with below average precip.  Yes  Son can't wait to use his new snow plow. (Wouldn't bother me in the least if he has to wait till next year) Keep that cannon pointed some where else.  Wink

RT,  belated  Happy B-Day Hope it was a good one.

Light snow / rain mix is predicted for tonight and tomorrow. Planning to complete the removal of the Christmas decorations and get them back to the attic. Many other things to do but there will be some time included for trains.  Big Smile May watch the game, probably have it on for train running. I'd have no interest at all if the STEELERS weren't in it.

SS fund is calling, try to get back over the weekend.

Prayers for those in need.

Good morning all,  our little group of train guys got together yesterday for lunch and an operating session at my layout afterward.  There was only three of us this time.  We only have four left in all.  I remember when this group was about 20 people.  Time, death and distance have taken their toll on us.  Saw a nice piece on TV last night about Walt Disney.  I thought I had seen everything on him but there was some new stuff I had not seen before.  What a guy!  His only surving daughter Dianne appeared on the show also.

My nephew and his wife in Virginia had a new baby boy a few days ago.  He was a little premature but weighed over 6 pounds.  They were concerned when he was losing a little weight but is gaining now.  I think he is going to be OK.

This is a tough winter for you guys in the East.  I know you will be glad when spring gets here.  The population in the Sun Belt will probably go up again this year after that Winter.  I've been in Shake and Bake country here since 1958.  Don't think I could survive in the East now.  Smog is bad but you don't have to shovel it.

Later,

Ray

Good Evening

bright sun and 28 today

I don't see any snow melt. Roads are clean and dry through. We had our friday meal out, fish and chips for me, pasta for granny. That kinda annoys me as we can fix that at home but oh well. The beacon will be humming and banilla at the ready...S.J.

Chief, that sounds like a typical Southern meal, at least it used to.  I don't think my relatives in the South eat like that much anymore.  Can't beat it for taste though.  My sister used to tell me if someone was having a big problem in their family, you would take them some fried chicken and potato salad.  If it was real bad you included a banana pudding.  I still eat fried stuff once in a while when I can get away with it.  Rest of family all have acid problems with it.  I will still eat bar-b-que though even if it kills me.  We're having baby back ribs tonight on sale at super market for super bowl weekend.  Bon apetite!

Good evening everyone.  Been a Loooonnngg Day.  Lots of work to do and we were a man down, so I had to pick up some extra cases.  I picked up some BBQ from our new favorite place of such fare.  On the way there, I was delayed by a train that runs right down the middle of the street in town.  It had been delayed because some young fool who was driving did not hear, nor see the train.  Guess who won?

Have a day of it tomorrow that my bride has told me will be spent on the layout!....I married well!    Have to run...hope everyone has a blessed day.

Stopped in to catch up on the Pot and get in a smile and a chuckle before I hit the sack.  Got more than that!

I finally bundled my "services" with Comcast.  I added their local, local long distance, and long distance in addition to the internet and cable TV I had with them.  Same 'too many features" set up.  Same total domestic coverage, unlimited, but they include PR, Guam, and other US interests.  If the numbers including fees, taxes, etc., work out as explained, I'll be saving $80 per month for the first year with a $15 price cap on the following year.  The phone quality via cable?  Just as good as it was hard wired with Verizon.  I didn't have to change a thing in the house.  They just added a modem (with battery backup) near the hardwired phone and cable inputs in the basement and I was good to go.  Total conversion and installation cost $30, refundable if I cancel in 30 days, and they will (allegedly)put things back the way they were with the other dropped carriers (ATT and Verizon).  Made all of the switches for me.  verizon had a better financial offer, but my daughter and son-in-law have been having problems with their FIOS, so I went with Comcast.  Gave me 7 HBO and 5 Starz channels in the process as part of the package, and the internet speed has been boosted from 12 mbs to 20.

I've had Verizon cellular for 15 years, won't switch because I have never had any of the problems my friends and families have had.  Coverage was the best amongst the herd way back then.  Some caught up.  Arguably not the cheapest cell service, but it is reliable and dependable with no service or reception issues, here about town or out in th boonies or camping in Vermot.  It just works, for me.

Fife........you need a dog.  Why wait?  Lassie would want you to continue her legacy.  And it isn't as if the new dog won't fit right in to your new digs, wherever you wind up, where you are or points West.

Brutus.......I'd be afraid of losing Chewy in the snow, until at least Chewy adequately alters the color of the snow with a yellow and brown caste.  Then Chewy's white coloring will stand out.  Smile, Wink & Grin

LAZ........sounds like your Minnie has settled right in and has already brought along some smiles and comeraderie.  Thumbs Up

Chief.....has the new pup pup a dent in your midsection, sleeping on your lap in the reclinerizer?  Or have to many official state dinners derailed that progress?  Laugh

DougM......saw the pics of your pup, first ones I have ever seen  Looks like you cleared some space amongst the drifts for canine potty stops.  Did you do that on your own, or did the wifey just lock you out of the house until you got er done?  Big Smile

RaySP......that was some sad news about your neighbor's dogs.  I don't know how I could bring myself to get rid of a dog.  Town ordinances about the number you can keep on your property abound out my way too, think the number is 3.  Hope he can rehome a couple of them where he feels comfortable doing so.  He's new, didn't check out the town ordinances before he moved in.  And someone dropping a dime about the number of dogs he had?  That piece of info. didn't sit well with me.  Heartless and discourteous approach.  The   excessive barking can be mitigated greatly, have seen it time and again with countless folks up at our dog trainer's center.  If only someone had been up front about things, he might not be in the terrible position he is in.

Later, gang.

Doug - I'll bring the TARDIS over and see if we can figure out the confusion and delay problems!  On the way!

Mornin' boys.  Drizzle and 33 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Watching morning news with my first cup of Coffee, and saw that Packers Nation has brought The Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field to the Lone Star State.  Perhaps there was a good reason for hosting the Super Bowl in Miami...Tampa...Sandy Eggo...  Can't imagine being on one of the 300 flights cancelled.  Local news here also had a reporter up at the train show in Timonium; I will be there at 10.  Can't wait.

RI Jack I'll pass on the ride to Don's as its going to be in the 50's today and tomorrow and low 60's Monday so our thaw is here I hope.

Morning all not a lot going on. wow Navy jack thats a bummer on the deck man. Let them give you an estimate and get a couple form a few companies then contact a few buddies and have them rebuild it for you and Buy the material and give them some for doing it and keep the rest. When my deck out side my front door got hit by a car when I lived in TN I rebuilt it myself and made out big time they gave me like $900 I believe and the material was only like $200 - $300 and that included a floor jack so I could put a 4x4 on it to lift the roof so I could put a new 4x4 in place. I use to have picks some where but think I deleted them as Donna hated them as it just reminded her of it every time she saw it and as screen saver I have my putor set up so it does a slide show of all my pics randomly.

John In England you might want to find a club or maybe an senior center where you could donate your trains and be able to go and run your trains that would benefit both of you they get trains and you get to go there to run them off and on.

Not a lot going on today will talk to you all later

Good morning all,

I was too busy to check in yesterday.  I had to drive to OKC to pick up a subordinate at the airport.  I was glad to go as it gave me time to visit the LHS.  I picked up an O gauge trackside shed built by Buildings Unlimited.  The owner just wanted to get rid of it and he only charged me $7 which seemed fair to me.  The only downside is the instructions in the kit were for a different building.  Oh well, it is a simple kit and I should be able to manage.

It's a little warmer today with the high being in the mid-40s.  I plan to print off some stone or brick paper to use on the tunnel portals of the layout.  I need to get something over the painted foam I used to make them look a little better.  I have nothing else planned but I need to make sure all my chores are finished prior to tomorrow.

Navyjack - I'm sorry about your deck.  I hope its repair doesn't set you back too much.

John Bakeer - You have a great attitude about wanting someone else to enjoy the trains.  Hopefully as RT pointed out you could find a club or someone else who will run them and still allow you to as well.

S.J. - You must be a very busy man.  I usually finish all my train magazines within three days of receiving them.  Then I find myself rereading them until a new one arrives.

Have a great day,

Joe

Morning all.  Wife and kids are currently on their way to the local skate park as a friend of my son's is having a birthday there.  I am staying home to make our plans for visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer as well as to work on the layout.  As I am visiting the forum, they have a special on the Military Channel on the Gettysburg Address.  Some very interesting back story as well as a tough look at one of the nation's darkest days.

Navyjack, sorry about your deck.  Glad it didn't happen with a bunch of people on it to get hurt.  Hope dealings with the insurance company go well.

Roy, hope things improve tomorrow for the game.  I am sure it will be maddening to get around there.

Don't have a dog in the fight tomorrow, but I hope it is a good game.  May try to gather the family and head out to Applebee's to see some of the game.

God BLess,
Dennis
