Mornin' boys.  Mornin' English.  Dodged the bullet here in the Mid-Atlantic region with rain.

rt - Cake

SPMan - It was I who recently lost a Lassie-dog.  It was nice of you to think of me.  I mentioned it to Ms Kelly...she just ain't ready.  (I am tinkering with pet shipping rates coast-to-coast out of curiosity).  If we lived close by, we might take a look, but I'm sure she wants to wait and do the whole puppy thingy when we move to WV.  Thanks just the same.

Time to take littlest princess to mardigras.

Good Morning from the frozen tundra of NJ,

Everything is covered in at least 1/4" of ice. Driving is terrible. Right now it is quiet at the shop.

RI Jack, The bad part about going to NC was that they paid us in Confederate Script and Goober kept saying, "Hey'. Ernest T kept breaking windows and saying, "It's me it's me, I'm Ernest T".

John

May the ice get deeper and then snow on top.  Devil

sir james I

Good Evening

The snow hasn't reached here yet but it's on our doorstep, the wind has though. I went out and put the front of the truck 2 inchs from the garage door and the wind is biting cold. Hopefully all 2000 miles of us will get through this with power and heat. Banilla will be ready for those who want it. beacon will be on...S.J.

IT WILL  LaughLaugh

It works!  You guys can stop the snow cannon test!  We've gotten about 8" since 7am.  More coming.

We shut the plant down at 10:30 this morning to make sure everybody got home.  I finished up what I was doing and left about noon.  Helped push the plant manager's Mustang out of the lot. A low car with fat tires is not the winning combination today.

Just watching the snow drift around.

All for now.

Let it snow, let it snow.

Yankess laugh at me when we get snow.  Payback is H---.  RAIN here and warming.  Suppose to hit 70's before day is over.  More Yankee cold air to come but not as cold as has been.  Don't want to brag too much.  We have had some big snohios in March.

Off to vet to pick up Finn.  Changed his singing from base to tenor. Huh?

Good Morning

Weather guessers were wrong. I'm not sure how much snow we got as the wind howled all night. About 5 inches in the driveway. Grandson and son/IL are coming to clear it for us. Everyone stay safe...S.J.

Aloha all. Dang, I forgot to unplug the snow cannon overnight.  Well, it seems to be fading. But the wind is up and the cooooooold is coming. Drifts over me head when I went out before.. But maybe just about 2 ft. on the ground. The only folks out are dog owners. Big Smile  Quick, give me pointers on looking busy so I don't have to go outside again. I can't figure out photos here anymore.

HudsonJohn......stay safe brother.  Ice and power lines don't mix.  DougM and NavyJack, hope you are stocked up with frozen pizzas and beer.

Just got back in from the never ending snow removal and car cleaning for some coffee and a break.  Slow and steady, boys.  The tortoise wins the race.  And the older tortoises avoid a visit to the cardiologist in the emergency room. Wink

The current Taxachusetts weather forecast has moved some of the battle lines around in the area.  The snow amount forcast near the coast (me) for today was downgraded from the 8-16" range to 6-9"..... in addition to the 6-8" we received yesterday and the 4" we received overnight.

Warnings on the news to "clear the unshovelled stuff asap" fill the news as today's accumulation will be wet and HEAVY.  Then it freezes, ice.  The rising temperatures (now 30) when added to the snow, sleet, and freezing rain we are getting today will make the weight of the unmoved stuff far worse.  Flat top roof cave-ins (and canopy collapses at gas stations) continue from the weight of the snow, but today's additional accumulation should be the coup ge gras.

Some businesses with flat roofs have realized they have a disaster waiting to happen.  They have dispatched crews to haul snowblowers up on top to move the snow off the roofs.

The newspeople are advising individual homeowners to remove snow from their roofs, which I think is a very dangerous and ill-advised recommendation!  If you think about the latter, you can just picture folks slipping and falling off ladders and their roofs.  I unilaterally voted for mother nature to take her course with my roof, easier to deal with a roof issue that a broken neck, no matter how you slice it.

An elderly woman (81) lives on the other side of my road, saw her wandering around her snow covered driveway this morning in her bathrobe.  She has a whole crew that normally comes and clears her snow, but they hadn't shown up yet.  Landscapers' Winter employment.  So I walked over to see what was the matter.  She was out looking for her Wall Street Journal!!!!  Big Smile  After sending her back inside her house, I searched for the newspaper to no avail, concluded It hadn't been delivered yet, told her so, and then said it would better for her to stay put indoors until her crew had cleared her snow.

The fire hydrant across the street was buried again by the snowplow crews, must be cleared, and it appears none of my neighbors are bellying up to help clear it, yet again.  So that will be my project later in the day when I have caught up with my own snow.  I think I am going to have to say something to the slackers, like "Can you help me, please?"  Better yet, clear it, say nothing, all the while aiming the snowblower stack onto one guy's driveway.  Bet that will get him going.  Then I can chat with him about "shared" responsibility.  "Or do you expect me to do all of the work to keep you and your family safe?"   Big Smile

On the more serious side, the elderly are in peril unless they have someone to help them with the snow.  Many folks have to work and can't get to it until they return home.  For those with just a snow shovel, I pity them.  For youse guys out there on the POT, elderly is defined as 20 years older than I am, and the definition stays the same every year. Whistling

And then there is a catch 22.

Folks like me (with a snowblower) see neighbors without a snowblower or without a snow removal service.  In their driveways and in their garages sit the latest and comparitively expensive cars.  You see them out there fighting against the elements with nothing but a snowshovel.  Do you help them, or do you let them figure it out?  The extra coin they repeatedly overspend for a car could be better spent on dealing with the responsibilities that come with home ownership and the inevitable New England weather.

Investing in an effective snowblower is dropping a relative pittance, $1,000-$1,500.  Could spend less for alternatively hiring a removal service for a Winter.  These folks spend double to triple that amount each and every year in automobile depreciation alone!!!!!!!!!!!  They could buy a more modest vehicle, then buy a new snow blower, throw it out at season's end, and get a new one every year thereafter !!!!!  And still be money ahead!

My wife is fed up with no one helping out with the fire hydrant clearing.  And more so with what she feels are certain neighbors (without snowblowers) who are taking advantage of others (with snowblowers) while their driveways are filled with very nice cars and have landscapers to mow their lawns all Spring, Summer, and Fall.

I'm beginning to think she is right, that they need to reprioritize, they need to learn their lesson the hard way, and they need to stop depending on others.  SoapBox

Jack.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Just to let everyone know, still around.  Been working on a layout (part time job), its been a LOT of fun.  Especially when it comes around to introducing a person to Command Control.  Most of the track work is done, waiting on some switches for the final loop from Ross.  Have the wiring done as much as possible, (my part).  Working on a Control Panel design. Here's a couple of pics;

Going to do some Operation Training today.

Finally, got all the car windows fixed and working, plumbing resolved.  Now have a couple of computer issues to get taken care of.  Yesterday, was a great day, got an order for the Academy Awards coming up, that is ALWAYS good.

Sure hope Doug gets that canon under control!  Looks like there is a pretty good chance I may make it to York this year, so want to make sure the snow is melted first.  Really hope all you guys come through this winter storm OK.  Sounds like a great time to stay at home!

Happy Birthday RT !!!

Take care, I wont be such a stranger!  But sure having a great time with the layout.

Oh yeah, considering get involved with the club again.  But only on a limited basis, operationally, and be able to take advantage of the friendships that were developed.

Happy birthday RT.

Taking a break from shoveling while my tootsies warm up. It really is a pleasant day outside - a little crisp at 9 degrees, but dressed properly, it is no trouble.

Got about 20" of snow in the back yard and about 14" on the front sidewalk.  I'm not going anywhere until a plow comes down my street.  I'm 1/2 a block away from a main street that is passable, but.....

I'd rather deal with deep snow than the the ice that other folks have.

I'm about 3 hours west of Brutus.  The southern edge of the storm got him, the center of the storm ran over me.

Take it easy with the storm clean up folks.  Clean sidewalks are not worth slip & fall injuries or heart attacks.

Might even run some trains this afternoon.

All for now.

Greetings from Siberia, NJ,

We had about 9,000 customers out this morning. I was in Raritan Center in Edison, a big flash in the sky like they were taking a picture and then darkness. We had the power back on in minutes. I did not hear what the problem was.

RI Jack, I am lucky that I do not have neighbors like yours. Everyone helps each other out and we all check on the elderly. My son is always on hand with the blower, plow or shovel. Not bad for an 18 year old.

Don Baker, The layout is loking good.

Traindood, Don't tell me. Outside looks like the ice castle scene from Dr. Zhivago. (I hope that I spelled it right) That is my wife's favorite scene. She loves that movie.

8n, I agree that I would rather have a large snow accumulation than this ice.

Pat, I watched the tractor pulls on RFD TV this morning. I wish my cable had it.

EVERYONE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL. DON'T OVERDUE IT.

Back to work now,

John

Mornin' All.

All youse guys in the ice & snow marathon can look on the bright side, you could be in Australia trying to recover from horrendous flooding and now facing a mega-typhoon.

Jack, Have you tried warm water on the hydrants or did your beer supply run out? Whistling Keep up the good work with the elders Thumbs Up , I would skip the "users" though.

Traindood, Gotta keep that road open for special packages delivered by a big brown truck. Clown

Don, That looks like a nice set-up. Great wiring , it doesn't look like a bowl of pasta. Shy

Good morning all,

Fife,  I thought of you but I guess it's just too far away to do you much good.  I think that guy wants a lot of money for those dogs anyway.  I would take one if I had the right kind of yard but I don't.

D.Baker, great looking layout!  I love the looks of that wiring.  Mine is a nightmare.  The main thing I need at a minimum is more feeders to the track.  Need to run that star wiring for DCS with two wires out and back for each connection.  Have to decide on what size wire?  I used speaker wire on the last one I ran over a long distance.

I'm still nursing a bad back and pains in left leg which limits the amount of work I would like to do.  Got to get over this stuff so I can walk for exercise again.  Probably see doctor again if it doesn't clear up soon.

Well, got to get ready to face the day,

Ray

Good afternoon all,

It's blistering cold outside today, somewhere around 9 degrees and the wind is still blowing.  The kids did not have school but I had work.  The roads are pretty decent so I have not had any issues getting around.

Doug - We usually keep our faucets dripping as well.  This time the weird part is how one bathroom is affected three different ways: the sink has cold water, but no hot; the shower has hot, but no cold; and the toilet will not refill after flushed.  Our bathroom has three different issues as well, just as odd: my sink and the shower both are fine and have both hot and cold water; my wife's sink only has hot; and our toilet partially refills after being flushed.  The part most troubling to my wife is our lines to the washing machine are frozen as well.  I hope those lines thaw soon or I may be turning my underwear inside out Ick!.

Don – The layout is looking great.  As already stated, the wiring looks very orderly and well done. Mine looks like a third grader rigged it up.

RT - Happy B-Day

It's time to get back to work.

         Happy B-Day

Don,

Looks good.  I should enlist you and 88 to redesign my layout.

SJ,

Thanks for the info on the 783.  I am having a hard time talking myself out of one though.

Still no call.Sigh  I need to finish taking the Christmas layout down tonight or tomorrow.  I will also start listing some of my PW Lionel on ebay.  I don't want to sell everything, I just want to clear out those 'why did I buy this?' items as they are starting to feel like a burden.

Good Evening

19 and going down near 0 tonite.

Jim you are good at tinkering I'm sure you could fine tune a 783. Make sure the magnets are not rubbing against the drivers. Official snow depth 9 inches at Detroit airport. The guessers say we got less than others cause it turned to sleet during the nite. Granny said she heard it, all I heard was the wind(outside the house). Inside the house I blame it on Brutus' dog Chewy. Banilla is ready but land on the driveway, don't want to shovel us outta here..S.J.

Well it is cold here - 7 last night and high of 19/20 today. Everything encased in ice and power grid struggling so we have been enduring rolling blackouts most of the day. 20-30 min of no power followed by 1 - 1.5 hours of power. The good news is not possible to work from home. When my power is on the power to the office on the other side of town is off - so no servers to connect to.

Sooo - it is time for 'da Chief to stop insulting the Nawtherners. You are taking the rest of us down dood!

Doug - I agree you definitely left the snow cannon on last night.

Ice so bad here they brought 20 snowplows from Amarillo to work on some of our worst roads. Somewhat comical.

Don B - that layout is looking good! BTW - did you give up your other business when you retired?

Later - keep warm!

Regards, Roy

Good evening all,

It is clearing off somewhat in SE Indiana.  Went over to check on dad today.  5 minute trip took 15.  He is doing ok.  Neighbors check in on him.  Called the office today.  Out of 35 who could be there, only 2 made it in today and 6 on Tuesday.  Indy really got hammered.   Drove on some of the main roads here and they appear to be ok.  Will attempt to go in on Thursday.  It was kind of nice today to spend the day at home and not really have much to do.  Lots of limbs down from the storm, but none hit the house and the brief warm front melted all the ice off the trees around here.  Dodged a major bullet with this storm.  I hope all of us stay safe thru all this bad weather.  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car for breakfast.  TBIL with de-icers still on full power.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Getting super-colder. We ventured out for pizza. Not too many others out.

Joe, we're fortunate in not having had issues with frozen pipes. I hope yours resolve themselves. Glad I remembered to clear the dryer vent and intake and exhaust pipes for the furnace!

Don, that's going to be a beautiful layout

Happy Birthday RT!  Glad you got something with flanged wheels on it's way to your abode.  Temps are dropping and supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow. BRRRRR!  Doug, our friends in Downers Grove had 1 foot of snow out the front door and 3 feet in the back.  Must have been some wind with it.

Jack, they will not thank you, but do good anyway....their judgement doesn't count, but yours does.  Just be careful and know your limits.

Gotta head to bed now as I have a big day of it tomorrow.  Hope that everyone has a blessed night.  I will keep praying for the mentioned needs.

GOd Bless,
Dennis

All the Buckeyes are at fault.  Can't aim a snow cannon.  Turning colder but weatherman says all indications are for a warmer than normal Feb.  Never got the rain promised.  Only one tenth.  Charging up those blasted MTH batteries.  About time for Blue Bloods.  Later

Good evening all,

Tonight would normally be a Bible study night for us, but it was cancelled due to the weather.  The wife made chicken and dumplings for dinner tonight and it really hit the spot due to the frigid temps.  The frozen pipes are beginning to resolve themselves: the washing machine and our toilet are now operable.  It was very cold today, but very sunny as well.  I believe the direct sunlight helped out.

Navyjack - You're not being nosey, I don't mind sharing details about what I do, especially with a vet.  I believe pulling casualty assistance duty would not be very much fun.  I don't have too many collateral (we call them additional) duties to worry about, and I enjoy serving too much to ever get down.  Thanks for the encouragement.

Doug - We had a couple pipes freeze up before and they resolved themselves without any problems.  We believed the pipes to the kids' bathroom froze up because they are located on the side of the house that gets the most wind, but our logic may be flawed since our bathroom pipes did as well this time.  Maybe all the pipes are routed that way.

Pat - No kidding; at least the toilets were flushing.  All I had to do was manually fill up the tank with water.  I've used outhouses and port-o-johns in extreme weather conditions in the past and I don't want to ever again.  However, it may have been a good lesson for my kids.

Good night,

Joe

Running late. Don - great work on that layout man!  8NT - yeah I think I had 2 to 4 inches of sleet over freezing/frozen rain here.  We had snow as well, but it was mostly drifts at my house.  The deepest on the driveway was about 6 inches I think.  Around the truck it was down to just a couple inches or so.  It took my kids and I about 1.5 hours to chip it out and shovel it off.

SJ - You know Chewy makes some powerful weather if it is blowing through your house from here Laugh  TARDIS is ready so let's hit it with de-icers on full!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

I'm out of steam, the result of shovelling and snowblowing too much.  But it had to be done.   The weather was all over the place today, starting with powdery snow, heavy snow, then sleet, rain, then back to powdery snow.   Temps at 20 now and falling, may see single digits tomorrow.  So anything white not moved will be immovable, like concrete.  The roads were empty today, folks and kids stayed home and hunkered down.  Next storm is Saturday, could get 6-9" more.  Bang Head

BTW.......no further issue with the snowblower, it's working beautifully.

Did you ever wonder why it is necessary to list all 600 of the school closures one by one on the news?  Wouldn't it be easier to just list the half dozen that are open?  No one is going to show up at those 6 anyway.

8n........you are on the Western snow defense front, but you are falling down on the job.  Too much is getting past you. Smile, Wink & Grin

Roy........as far South in the U.S. as Texas is, why does it get so cold down there.  And why aren't you sending more of those single digits Chief's way?

Joe.....read about your freezing pipes problem.  No fun when the inside basics come to a halt.  Thanks for the bucket of water idea for the toilets that don't refill due to a frozen cold water pipe.  And all of this time the Chief was unnecessarily going out in the yard and taking care of business along with his dogs when his pipes freeze.  Must be a Southern thing.  Whistling

On a final note,  I love you guys when you post,  "I have stopped buying trains and am going to thin things out a bit."  The first thing never happens.  Nor does the second.  Laugh

DougM.......heard that all of the roads in Lake County were closed down due to the weather yesterday.  I think it has been 32 years since that many cars got stuck in the snow and were abandonded on Lake Shore Drive.

HudsonJohn........hope all went well with the power down your way.  The ice looked pretty bad.  With the hours you have to put in with these weather events, who shovels your snow?

John Baker......don't worry, we'll send you some snow if you are feeling left out.  Do you want white snow or yellow snow?

Brutus......I got to wondering how Chewy contends with all of the snow.  Maximus is 28 inches tall and he has a hard time.

SJ........indeed, you seemed to have dodged a bullet with the storm.  My FIL out near NavyJack and DougM got about 20 inches, but the drifts were almost 6 feet blown up against his glass sliding doors due to the high sustained winds and drifting snow.

Don..........like your wiring work.  If you saw the tangle of wires behind my entertainment cabinet that has all of the audio and video equipment in it, you would tell me to rip it all out and start over.  But it works.

JimmyT......I am still praying that you get an offer.

Prayers for those who need them.  And as others have suggested, everyone take it easy with the snow removal or you will be taking it easier at a medical facility.  My Dad never used to get flustered with these major snow events.  He would observe "It will all be gone by June."  Then he'd tell me to get off my rear and go shovel our snow and to not forget to do the neighbors'.

Good night, ya'll.  Two ibuprofen and I'm off to bed!!!!!!!
