Mornin' boys.  Damp & 46 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Rich was in town but I missed him due to work.  Says he ran circles around the gen-xr's.

SPMan - You bring up a good point about "after" care of our modern engines.  We all know how we have to "cycle" our electronically advanced trains, but I doubt if others in our family do, or would even bother with it. And yes, gutting them for e-units would religate them to a flea-market shaker-box.

Good morning all,

It is cold and wet in SE Indiana.  Did treadmill at the YMCA and some other errands.  Long day at work with computer issues.  Glad I am no longer in IT.  Welcome back, Big Boy.  As with some of the others, I do remember your posts from a while back.  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL anytime and I can drive again.  It was a good drive last night and the banilla was extra good.  A round of zucchini bread will be on board tonight.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Morning all.  Getting ready for an early case and then to the weekend.  Lots on my mind as today is also the anniversary of my Mom's passing....tough.  So far Dad is doing OK, but he really misses her and for so long, he thought he would be the first to check out.  We have no big plans for the weekend, which is a good thing.  Only thing we have on our want to do list for Saturday is that Belk store is having it's annual "Charity Sale" in which we get a good discount, but more importantly, local charities get a portion of all sales.

Elliot, Congratulations for you and Big-Girl.  She must be a good woman to have stuck by you through the hard times.  For me, and I am sure many here, it is great to have you back.

Brutus, hope things calm down on your end.  May Char come home with plenty of smooth sailing for the two of you ahead.

RT, continued prayers for you brother.  Even the runt of the litter can find the warmest places of the heart.

Have to head in.

God Bless,
Dennis

Wife and I Z'd out/crashed for about 3 hours tonight on the sofa and the love seat with the TV on.....and now I can't sleep.  The "crud" is even worse today for both of us.  If the conventional wisdom says "stuff a cold" I am overachieving on that front.  After lasagna, garlic bread, and a salad for dinner I ate a giant bowl of Frosted Flakes, some Halloween candy, and a Klondike bar.  Think I'll take another cold pill, and hit the sack, and try again.

Welcome back, Elliot!

Howdy guys - big howdy to Big Boy!  You were here when I first read this site and have been missed by many of us, glad you are okay.  I loved your giant layout pics and the video.  Hope you get back into the trains a little bit, they are a good way to relieve stress Thumbs Up

Well, I had to cancel my preoder on the Dewitt Clinton due to finances, just going along on my paycheck only right now and have too much we need to do compared to stuff we (I) want, so there you go.  10 percent restock on the whole order came to about 70, which stinks but it's understandable I guess.  Maybe I'll be able to buy it next year, I'm sure it will be available for a year or so despite what they say - you can still get the John Bull for msrp and sometimes a little less.

12 hours of mandatory OT coming this weekend, which will help but really stinks since Sunday is my actual birthday.

I took off early today by a couple hours so I could go visit with Char and take her some supplies (some hard candy and books from home) and then go get my driver's license renewed.  Turns out they changed the law and I need a copy of my report of birth of a child to americans born abroad (or whatever it was called).  I told the lady that in 1963 my Dad was manning the edge of oblivion in Germany, where I was born, just before he went to Vietnam the first time.  Oh well - she can't change a stupid rule, but we agreed it is pretty stupid.  Anyway, I have a 1 year license now and have to apply to DOD for a copy of the report.

Tardis is ready - I'll use the way back circuit to come get all you guys, then Mike can take over.  I think I found a stash of banilla in the back of the deep freezer on board Smile

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Sunny, cool and windy today.  Talk of snow flurries next week.

Brutus - here is hopeing that Char is released from the hospital soon.  She has got to be really tired of the place by now, and is probably way past ready to come home.

Big Boy - the current forum software is less than a year old.  You will be learning right along with the rest of us.

Gave brief thought to a holiday layout this year, as it seemed we would not be able to take our usual trip to Michigan.   That is all changed now.  My wife is starting to talk about maybe taking our usual trip.

Got notice that my REA boxcar shipped.  Ought to be here in a few days.

No trains this weekend.  We are hosting about 25 people for the main course of a progressive dinner on Saturday.  I'll be cooking chickens, turkey and a pork loin outside.  The neighborhood sure will smell good for a couple of hours.

All for now.

WOOPEE!!!!!!!!! Big Smile  Look who has dropped by.  I've been getting a report on you off and on by one of my "spies" up north.  Glad to hear from you.  Tell Big Girl I said, "Howdy."  Hope this "recession" is not hitting on you too bad.  Keep visiting hear.  [gang, this guy has forgotten more about trains than I can ever know]

Still raining.  Taking it easy now.

Later.

Hi Chief. I'm guessing that your spy is Boyd. He works at the pizza place up the road from me, and I've run into him at the grocery store too.

Big_Girl is now Mrs. Big_Boy. It'll be two years Dec 11th. She can still cook, but we've had to lay off the pies.Wink (see I haven't forgotten)

I haven't done anything with trains since I got sick. It wasn't any one thing, it was more of a perfect storm on a few fronts. The diabetes which I've had for 18 years is starting to slow me down. I'm starting to lose feeling in my hands. It makes it hard to deal with small objects and things like paper. I started wearing bifocals last year, but what I really need is trifocals.Sigh I feel like I'm falling apart, one piece at a time.

Friday is the one year anniversary of my father's passing. The reason I mention it is he was really the one who made enterTRAINment possible. He was the trustee, and allowed me to use some of the money I inherited from my mother. Yes, the creativity was mine, but without him it never would have happened.

As for the recession, let's just say I'm pretty OK on that front, again thanks to dad.

It's going to take some getting used to with the "new" forum software. Lots of bells and whistles. You guys have been using it for 4 years now, but I bailed out right when the transition happened. Now that I've made the leap, I'll be around.

Have fun,

Elliot

Thanks all the thing is she was special to us as she was a runt ( dwarf cat) she never weighed more than 4 lbs and was always about 1/2 the size of a normal cat. but she had a 20 lb fist with the other cats in the house she ruled the house. shes the only cat I have ever seen stomp after another cat I mean stomp she would honestly stomp. we'll miss her for sure

Our cats are our children as we never were blessed with any so I guess we spoil them we have fried fish for dinner they have fried fish for dinner. Just the way we are with them. Tonight we all had fried tilapia more or less as a mourning dinner

Well have a little problem with the TMCC in the PRR Trainmaster not sure if its the main board or the R2LC board but I'm betting on the main board. once I add power to the track the rear coupler will come open by its self. then I shut it and I have no control of the couplers. They will not open. but if I unhook the wires from the main board to the rear coupler the front will work fine. If I unhook the front only the rear will open by itself and then won't work. so its something to do with the rear coupler hook up as I have even switch the front hook ups with the rear hook ups and then its same thing but being front coupler now instead because I switch the wires around.

Anyway the dealer I bought from is sending me a new unit and I'm going to try just the R2LC first ( switching them) reprogram and see if everything works if so then I know its that but if not then I know its the main board as I think it is. Will see probably Sunday night or Monday when I'm off as expect to get it sat but I work late sat and have to be up early Sunday for work. He's also sending my number boards and new pick-up assembly for my PA-1 NYC I got in.

speaking of does anyone have a Williams PB-1 dummy ? want to know how long it is. Not counting couplers just the unit. Wondering how close in size they are to Lionel's PA-1's.

I know the colors don't exactly match but the way I look at it they one could been painted a few years befor the other and that would probably be the difference in fading. I just bet real ones don't match exactly all the time.

Not much else going on here tonight. Still a little depressed but coming out of it now so guess I will be fine. LOL

hope all have a good night and its almost TGIF about 6+ hours away

Good afternoon guys.  Joe, glad your wife is feeling better.  Jack, hope you and the bride get to feeling better soon.  Chief, one place I used to get a lot of great precision shooting supplies is a place called "Sinclair".  I think they are in Iowa or some other middle of the country type place.  The folks on the phone are all shooters and have great advice.

Had a early case today and was out by noon.  Got to spend a little time with bride before having to pick up the kids.  Now wife and daughter are at ballet/tap dance lessons.  We are going to join them for dinner at Steak-N-Shake.Dinner  A front came through last night with rain.  Mid morning, the temps dropped down into the 60 s.  Hoping for more rain to help the fruit trees.

Ray,  I have a bunch of low tech locomotives and enjoy them.  I think I must have about 25 Legacy/Command engines.  All the engines work, but I have hardly run them.  Not sure what I would do if they stopped working...I am not into selling them, and my wife would not afford me the space to make room for shelf queens.

Hope to hear more from Elliot "Big-Boy".
God Bless,
Dennis

Good afternoon all,

Just a quick check-in while I take a break from work.  The wife was still a little unwell this morning so I skipped the workout and prepared the two older kids for school.  The wife was feeling better by lunch so we went out for lunch, a tasty Mexican meal.

88 - I am still contemplating Christmas layout ideas as well.  I cannot finalize anything until my wife decides where she wants to place the tree this year.  No matter where the tree goes, I will not have much layout room either.  I will probably have a simple loop with maybe one siding.  I’m hoping to use some of the Christmas buildings from the Home Depot or Lowe's.  I will probably go with O36 Fastrack; I know it used to come in a snow-covered finish.  However, I do have some O27 tubular track laying around that is in great condition.  I may save some money and use it.  Your lineup of Christmas trains sounds great.

Ray - None of the trains I have right now are very modern or hi-tech - simply due to economic reasons.  I will buy more modern trains in the future when the budget permits.  I love running my trains (future trains will be run as well) and I am not concerned about their value so any items that outlive me (I'm only 35 so I should outlive many of them) will be passed on to my kids.  A train that doesn't outlive me will be fixed if it is a train I love to run and it is cost effective; otherwise, it will be mothballed to a display shelf.

Have a great day,

Joe

Good morning all,  glad elections are over and all those phone calls.

RT, sorry about your kitty.  Sounds like he went peacefully at least.  I know it hurts.

Went to lunch yesterday with friend who's wife has been layed up for a long time with back problems.  He has worn himself out taking care of her 24/7.  He really needs a break.

I posed a question on another forum about what happens to our modern trains when they/we get old.  Interesting discussion with a mixed bag of comments.  I personally am having a hard time maintaining all these electronic trains.  Too expensive, not enough repair places near me, etc.  bottom line is like anything else, you have to pay to play I guess.  At least I can dump the electronics in engines and put in reverse units and run conventional if I have to.  Did that with one MTH F unit already.  I saw the same set of units ACL proto 1 listed in the latest TCA buy/sell paper at about $950 in mint condition.  Seems like everything I look at in that paper is Mint in original box and that is mint too.  W hatever happened to run of the mill trains.? Mine are not mint but not abused either.  I wonder what they are worth now after taking out the electronics?  The answer can't be good.  No matter, I will run them until either I or they drop.

Hoping to have get together tonight with friends and run some trains.  Garage will be hot today but should cool off tonight.

Have a good day,

Ray

Brent,

This mite sound a little funky but instead of just "loops" can a kind of diamond shaped loop be made since you are in a corner to start ? Idea

Not really. The layout is going to be kind of cone shaped, but only because the corner that sticks out into the room is going to be curved to allow easier walking and to reduce the tripping hazard. Big Smile I may be able to extend the 'cone' section back a little.

I was really hoping to get something along the lines of the 6.5' x 6.5' layout from a couple years ago... but I just can't work it into the area I have and I didn't want to upgrade all the engines to cruise control (at least at this point in time)... depending on how this works out and how much space I take up, I may look to extend it next year and then upgrade the engines to ERR.

88 - I kinda like the idea of 3 loops around the tananbum.  Layer them like a cake. Outside loop of O-72 with scale steamer.  Middle loop of O-54/O-42 with semi-scale. And inside loop of O-31/O-27 with traditional.  Started work on a 12'x3' Christmas layout for Kelly's bank.

Can't do O72 Sad Most I have is 5'6" to work with, most likely going with 5' - but I need to order the new tree first so I know what I have to work with. I want the diameter to be 4" wider than the tree's bottom baughs. Depending on what track I go with (thinking most likely FasTrack)  I'm thinking O60, O48, O36. I tried Atlas last night and O63 was too large so I had to go O54, O45, O36 it didn't look too bad but only had 4.5 inches between the loops, if I go FasTrack I get 6 inches between the loops and I think that will be enough for my buildings. As for the engines... I have the Lionel Christmas engines and rolling stock and none of them are scale. So I was thinking North Pole Central Berk pulling the NPC Passenger cars on the bottom (so I can put the North Pole Passenger Station on the base), then the Christmas Mikado pulling freight in the middle going the opposite direction, then the NPC Docksider or NPC General pulling freight on the top level going the same direction as the bottom train. I was trying to figure out a way to get the pylon with Santa's sleigh on the layout, but not sure where that would fit other than back in the corner - but you would never see it...

Post pics of the 3'x12' layout. Smile

Greetings Ya'll From Rainy Taxachusetts,

Wifey and I are both under the weather, cold symptoms that dragged on over 5 days and were getting worse.  Nurse practitioner prescribed the usual fare for a viral issue.....OTC cold remedy. some high test cough medicine, etc.  Sleep disrupted for both of us and we have had to scale back on our normal routine.  Ice cream last night didn't hurt, but it didn't help much either.

RT.......re your sad news, you have my condolences at the untimely loss of your cat.  I don't expect everyone to understand what a beloved pet means to me and my wife.  But as others have stated, they become an integral part of the family for many.  Your wife may be taking this harder than it looks or you think.....

8N......Thumbs Upoverall good news on your home front.  Your wifey's recovery continues without interruption.  The knee can be treated or fixed.  And I can understand your consternation over her job situation, not necessariky a done deal.  FMLA is one of the most difficult employee personal protections for an employer to administer correctly under the law.  I won't offer any advice other than this:  if it were me, I would secure an outside expert opinion on your wife's particular situation as it pertains to her employer's legal responsibilities before I threw my hands up in the air and moved on.  No employee can have back surgery and be reasonably expected to walk back in the door at work and pick up exactly where they left off.  Reasonable accomodation, whether that be helping her ease back into her old job or provide an alternative.  May be worth a "second opinion."

Brutus.....don't forget to look under the sofa and other furniture, then hit the recycling center, before Char gets home and finds all of the beer can emties.  Smile, Wink & Grin

SJ.....assume you have been out shopping for a replacement thong that fits and a disguise so you can return to the beach. Laugh

Later, gang.

Morning all.  Chilly and rainy.  Errands to run and veggie soup to cook.  Veggie soup is good when it turns chilly here.  Wifey got out all the left over veggies she has frozen in ziplocs.  Will brown some ground beef [friend brought from Texas, yes from their herd] and add tomatoes and cook for hours.  Doing some estate work too.  Got to get new Thompson out of safe and clean bore.  BTW: it comes with $50 rebate so will mail that today.  Need to go up and work on train layout.  Clean the dust off of everything and "tidy up".  No meetings today or tomorrow [so far].  Chat later.

8N, thought Feds had a law about employer not being able to do that.

They do, however it does not protect your job indefinitely (I think it maxes out at 12 weeks per incident), it only applies to employers with over 50 (I think) employees, and YOU have to request it prior to going out. It is called FMLA.

8N - I don't know much about the situation so I can't comment other than to say 'Things have a way of working themselves out.' Just keep a positive attitude and He will look after you.

Started working on designing the Christmas layout... disappointed that I can't do what I wanted - not enough room. So I'm looking at 3 concentric circles... Sad Maybe if the creative juices start flowing I can think of something a bit more interesting... we'll see.
