Happy Veteran's Day !

Wanted to add this poem that I have read many times and it is very special to me.

Marine chaplain Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, which eloquently speaks to both the courage and the irony in the role our soldiers play in protecting our great nation:

It is the Soldier

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

May God continue to bless America.

Remember the Veterans. Past, present and future.

Colin,

              Hopefully you'll get the job.

Laz,

One way to look at it is that you're doing something right.

I just snagged two lots of AF roadbed on ebay a few minutes ago.  Got 18 straight and around 30 curve for about $113.Thumbs Up  I will look for more at the show in Monroeville this Saturday.

Good morning all and happy Veterans Day!

I am enjoying the day off for the holiday.  One of the perks of being active duty is getting time off because of the sacrifices previous military members have made.  Therefore, I thanked the first Vet I saw today, my wife.  She served seven years on active duty; she got out right before having our first child.  She was able to sleep in today since I was able to get the kids up and ready for school.

We woke up to a chilly, rainy day.  Today's high temperature will be in the mid-50s.  We don't have much planned for today.  The wife is enjoying some time at the spa right now (previously purchased birthday gift), and the baby is having a nap.  We will probably go out for lunch once she returns.  There are a couple of places (Chili's and Applebee’s) in town offering free meals to active duty members and Vets today; we will take advantage of that.  We will also compile our Christmas shopping lists/plans this afternoon.

Have a great day everyone,

Joe

Aloha all. Beautiful Veterans Day here. Let the youngest ride his bike to school. Probably last time this year. I keep saying that. Driest month here in 54 years. But I'll take the warmth.  My personal thanks to those of you on this thread - and your family members - who served or are serving...

Hi Colin. Nice to 'see; you.   Laz, I always visit with the shop and autos teachers on parent's night. They're fun and have great stuff to see....

Good morning Colin:

Although I am one of the "older" guys, i have only been on the coffee pot under 2 years. I am glad to see younger guys here. You were about 15 when you joined the pot. We need more like you. Good luck on the RR job!

Thanks to all our Veterans today ..includes my Dad (USN, Ret.), 2 brothers (USMC, Ret.), 1 more brother (USA active) and my God-daughter (USAF).

In the 40's now up to 55.  Sunny!

Have a few runs to make then up north to baby sit for a friend.  Fire meeting tonight.  Hope to take the FireFighter II challenge course starting Sunday.  That should get me back up to speed, just need ISO 200 (which is the NEW incident command structure), then I'm officer material (good luck with that! Smile, Wink & Grin).

A slew of job applications went out yesterday and more today before I leave.  You'd think SOMEONE would take a chance at an old broken down auto tech...sheesh!!! Bang Head

Saturday will be moving from large storage to smaller storage and then yanking out the tracks and some train stuff.  Made a track plan, just need to see if I have enough.  2 loops, the outer loop elevated in the rear, a flat loop and a trolley line.  21' x6' in an "L" shape using six tables.  It's only going to be up for maybe 5 hours tops.  Outer loop will be Fastrack, middle loop will be Atlas O and the trolley line wll be tubular.  Equipment to be determined.

Good to see you back, Colin!

Well, thats all from Exit 8...off to the job hunt.  See ya in a while!

Hello all

Thank you to our veterans, especially those among us.

Quick check in this morning. Not much to report. Finally got most of the leaves gathered and the bulbs that will freeze in the basement. Hope to get the new front door (that’s been in the Mrs’ retreat for over a year) installed next week.

Weather has been ideal this week. Sunny and high 50’s to low 60’s. Mrs and I are headed to Harpers Ferry WV  for a long weekend tomorrow morning. We honeymooned there 35 years ago. Haven’t been back since. It’ll be the first trip towing camper with the Tahoe.

Brutus, glad to see your Mrs is improving.

Jack , hope you soon shake the CRUD.

Navyjack, glad to see you back.

Well I’d best get back to contributing to  Chief's SS.

Prayers for all who need them.

Morning everyone!

Just checking in to let you all know that I'm alive and well! Being 20 years old has a lot of responsibilities! School, cars, photography and my girl have been taking a lot of time, but I'm slowly getting back into railroading by way of photography and videography!

Life's been good lately and I have no complaints! I'm hoping it'll continue that way! I'm actually considering applying for a job on the New Hope and Ivyland RR because I have no school next semester! I would be extremely happy if I got a job there.

I'll check in as often as I can! Talk to you guys later!

Good evening all,

I did not have time to check-in earlier today as I was very busy all day at work.  The day flew by quickly and I had no problems with that.  Today's high was about 66 degrees which is way too warm for me this time of year.  The temperature is supposed to drop down tonight and we should also see some rain the next two days.

Tonight, the ladies had a potluck dinner at the church.  So, a few other husbands and I volunteered to watch the kids.  I suppose we did an okay job since no one was injured.  After we got home, I put the kids to bed and watched the newest episode of The Ultimate Fighter I had recorded.

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day so I have the day off.  The two older kids have school so the wife and I will have some quality time during the day which will be nice.

It's time for bed now.  Prayers for all those in need.

Good night,

Joe

Evening all

Lots going on as usual.  We listed the house we fixed up with a realitor.  They think we are asking a very reasonable price for it.  Fixed a couple of light fixtures this evening on the way home.  The furnace at our house acted up last night right before going to bed.  The blower kept blowing after the burner went out.  After a little troubleshooting determined from the codes it was a main relay or aux relay.  Will get the part and install it tomorrow.

Luckly it is fairly warm out and we have gas logs to knock the chill off.

Going to do more 13.8kV switching in the morning.  I am showing the other crews and supervisors how to do it so I can spread around the knowledge.

Jack – Love the Odyssey.  I actually got to drive it the other day.  Got some mud flaps for it off ebay, will try and get to them Saturday after I winterize  the camper.

Got to go.  May God bless each of you

Jim

Howdy guys - what a weird day.  Started out okay, but then kids were screwing around instead of getting ready for school, etc.  Truck would not start - I tried giving it some gas, which probably flooded it.  Tonight after I got home from work it started right up.  Took the van to drop off kids at school and commute.  I guess I'll take the truck in tomorrow and see if they can find anything wrong with it and drive the van in the meantime.  We had a nice Veterans' Day event at work this morning, since our building is closed tomorrow to the public.  They offered OT for tomorrow, but that is for regular pay.  I finished my 6 hours of OT tonight and just at 6 o'clock the fire alarm went off.  I carried a co-worker's stuff down 4 flights of stairs - very heavy stuff.  Next time, I will try to avoid it!  No fire - a janitor hit the alarm by accident.  Talked to wife and they did a top and bottom scope today.  Top and bottom are healed mostly, but her upper intestine (she said) is still pretty torn up, which explains some symptoms she is having.

Sorry for last night, SJ - talked with RT for a while and then dozed off for a while, woke up around 10-ish.

Rich - prayers for work ASAP!

Mike - prayers for your uncle.

Tardis is ready so let's get going!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Jack, I have had a number of "moments" that make me think of Mom.  One was tonight as my daughter is watching Cinderella.  My mother and aunt used to be a team like the two mice (inside joke).  While her passing is only a year ago, I am sure as time goes on, things will be easier.

Fife, my only wish is that I had a camera along.  We will see if the photo I took with the cell phone came out.  I will try to see if she is still there in the next day or two.  I have to check with some folks if it was on lease to Norfolk Southern or part of the Genesee and Wyoming.  With the G&W, I have seen a number of different liveries on the local rails.  This particular rail yard acts as a exchange point.

It was a good day.  Had lunch with a good friend and then picked up the kids from school.  Violin practice and church and then some good tasting left overs for dinner.  Have a early morning tomorrow as a full schedule.  I had better head to sleep.

God Bless,
dennis

Good Morning from gray and Breezy Exit 8:

Fife, when you said marine unit, I instantly though of you being like Bruce Willis in that cop movie (Striking Distance with Sarah Jessica Parker).  That would be sweet! Yes

Jack(RI) - Hope you and the Mrs get to feeling better soon.  I know that stuff can hang on a lonnng time Bang Head

Nice to see John and NavyJack back in the mix here.

I put a BUNCH of Lionel, MTH and G gauge stuff on Craigslist and haven't gotten a single nibble.  Going to get a smaller storage unit and start getting the train stuff sorted out for the display.  I brought out my 0-8-0 Southern (only cuz it way close by).  Need to find my new ZW.  I have Dad's and a bunch of MPC era transformers if I can't find it.

Job hunt continue, though the bills keep coming.  Got to find something and FAST...., at least RT and Brutus are doing the OT...someone has to!

I've also been contracted to do a Christmas layout here for my parents and one for a friend.  I think I'm going to surprise Dad and run his restored 1666!

Watching Errol Flynn in Robin Hood...great movie!!

Check back later!

Yes they charge a final evauation fee but ebay is doing free listings right now no matter what price you start at. and then paypals fees as they require you use something that buyers can use debit/credit card but you can get around that if you want.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & a "mild" 46 in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Passed my swim test for the Marine unit yesterday.  Hadn't been in the water since Labor day weekend;hardest part was haveing long sleeve shirt on.  Probably won't be any openings this year;we'll see.

Rockisland - I truly believe that the ugly airmass you are sufferin' from coralates to the loss to the Browns.

SPMan - Jan '08 (Vol 21/Issue 1,pg70).  The layout has doubled in size since then.

dwiemer - The SOO engines always remind me of the Western Maryland's "circus" scheme.  If I modeled the upper midwest, it would be the SOO.

Thanks Fifey, for some reason on another post I thought it was something recent.

Crud: day 13.  Like the crummy weather, it may be passing slowly, too slowly.

MikeC....you have my prayers for your Uncle.

Well, Fife, you are right.  The Patriots did not show up in Cleveland and had their lunch shoved down their throats in every aspect.

Navyjack.....go on the internet to some automotive site like Edmunds.com and see what other owners have to say.  While these types of forums bring out some extremists, pro and con, you can get a feel for what folks like and don't like, and they share their experiences.  Edmunds will also have many of the cars road tested and provide their insight too.   Consumer Reports has a new and used car buying guide which can give you some idea what the survey respondents have reported soup to nuts on their vehicles, in 17 categories.  CR also has an issue that covers the "best and worst of" a model year.  A car magazine like Road and Track or Car and Driver is also a good research tool since these car magazines conduct long term tests on cars (40,000 + miles). These are 3 sources I use when contemplating my next vehicle choice.

Rich.....hang in there on the search front.  Something is bound to pop.

HudsonJohn.....are you in charge of the demolition derby or what?!?

Later, gang.
