Later guys been a long day, hopefully will have a LOT of available time in the future.

Have a great day!

Don - Good luck with that. If you are like most of us, you will have LESS available time now that you are "retired".

Fife - I would bet most of us have or had a mentor. I doubt we would be where we are today without them. It is hard to loose them, but we can relate to your loss.

Autographs - I have Barbra Mandrel, Don Williams, The Oak Ridge Boys, Billie Crash Craddock, all from the late 70's, back when they were willing to play small, local 200 seat dives.

Navyjack - Farm work settling down a bit here. Have finished clipping the fields for winter to get rid of the broom straw, and around the outside of the fields, a once a year thing. Still need to take two loads of calfs to market, move hay feeders and repair some fence.

Train time in my future? You bet!

Open for business, but a little windy last night. More coming this weekend I think.

Fife - sorry to hear about your friend

Anybody want that caboose shell?

Ok, here's a pic of the Mothinator 2000 XL. The zapper portion of the bug zapper has been removed and the ballast for the blacklight is below the frame that supports the rack fan. These were working used fans than we just replaced, so recycling at it's best. Must be at least 4" of moths in the bottom of the bucket right now. Pardon the duct tape, but this was a prototype. I forget who said that there are very few things in science that can't be solved w/ an adequate application of duct tape.

Have a good Friday

Good morning everyone.  Worked on the computer this morning and it is much faster...yeah!  Nothing I can take credit for....I just looked around and let Microsoft tools do the fix.  I am going in late as the case was delayed.  Not much else to report.  I am looking forward to my delivery of the F3 ABA set.

Fife,  I was saddened to hear of the loss of your friend/mentor.  It is tough to lose someone who has been there and invested in you as he did.  Pray that he will be with you in your memories as you spend time in the hobby.  I am sure you will have moments that make you wish he was next to you while you take in some cool train thing.  God Bless.

Chief, one thing you may want to do is get a canvas change bag from your bank.  You fill it with kitty litter and then tie off the open end.  They make great rests and are lightweight so you can carry them with you.  I have a couple that work well in a deer stand, or even on the side of a truck when you pop a fox or two.

Ray, yeah we really enjoy the violin.  Our studies have quite a variety from folk to the classics.  We also have a few of the broadway show pieces we are working on.  I don't know if the kids will continue for years to come, but certainly for the time being.  Studies have shown that kids who learn to play music actually do better in all other areas of study.  We are making it a family affair as we all enjoy it.

I am looking forward to tuesday night at 7pm...when it is all over and the phone calls, mailings, emails, etc. from the politicals will finally stop.  Although, I hear that here in Georgia, if a candidate doesn't top 50.1% of the vote, a run-off is called.

Hope each of you has a blessed day.
Dennis

Good mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Taxachusetts,

It's a seasonally cool 45 this AM with a high of 56 forecast for today.  A 20 degree swing from yesterday when we basked in 75 degree weather.  I have to give the pumpkins a bath today for pumpkin carving and pumpkin seed baking with the granddaughters tomorrow.  Ah, tradition!  A beautiful thing where one gets to relive childhood memories, or add some things to life one never had growing up.

The political ads now seem downright slanderous and libelous as election day approaches for next Tuesday.  Governor's ads extol that Taxachusetts is on the move......yup, we had more job losses last month, and the continued irresponsible spending of money we don't have continues, despite all of the jacks in taxes and fees.  Shameless special interest ads warn of the end of the civilized world if some of the tax and fee reduction referendums pass.  What I detest is when the pols speak of impending cuts when the fact of the matter is:  it's mostly a reduction in the increase in spending or a flat-lining of expenditures.  The State budget is a joke, and we are a few billion in the hole.

I took Laz' advice about the outdoor Fall cleanup chores....."do a little each day and fuhgetaboutit until tomorrow."  Will finish cleaning out the 3,000 gallon kiddie pool and cover today and tomorrow will conscript the SIL to help me fold it up and put it away when daughter and family show up for the pumpkin carving and weekly dinner at Grammy and Grampy's.

Brutus.....it's time to stop and smell the roses.  Char will be home soon, the little one got straight A's, and your boss is happy.  Month after month you have been the family glue, a daunting task.  But you didn't fold.  You deserve our congratulations, and an expression of respect and admiration are in order.  Leading by example!  Prayers continue.  Angel  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Fife......prayers on the loss of your mentor.  The world has too few folks like him, willing to pay it forward.  Your post made me start thinking about the mentors I have had in my life, those that had the greatest and lasting impact on me. Angel

Chief.......with the ramp up in ammo and armament, are you expecting a Yankee invasion?  Wink

JimmyT....your bro ought to be taking notes about your sound investment strategy, the trains.  Will he be surprised when they pry the AF collection from your cold dead hands in about 6 decades and get it appraised.  Then the tears will commence when they read your will which stipulates you are to be buried with it.  Smile, Wink & Grin

JimSP......sorry I have to agree with the Chief on something.  But something is seriously amiss in Snohio when Halloween is observed October 28.  What's with that?  2008 Honda Odyssey towing capacity: 3500 pounds.  Enough for camping?

Pat......what are your cows going to be dressed up as for Halloween this year?  They do seem to enjoy their forays into the neighborhood so much. Big Smile

8n......you could dress up as Brett Farve for Halloween with your balky knee and get rotten eggs thrown at you while trick or treating this year.  Just don't take pics of your thingy and send them to any of us. Whistling

RT......that jike about vet meds was funny, until I realized that another type of vet meds (for the dog) is costing me $7 a pill. Bang Head

JoeyD.....great job on the kiddie costumes!  The personal time and touch with the little ones create memories for them that will last a lifetime. Thumbs Up

DonB......it seems that at every turn we know someone barely hanging on and have run out of options.  Too bad that guy couldn't have stayed in his home with the family and moved his business out of there, cutting the overhead.

Bob.......the animal rights people think you should build a shed near the scope up in the mountains to keep the skunks safe for the winter.  Whistling

MikeC......you have to admit your soccer team had quite the season despite getting bumped from the hunt last night.  Loved the comment about your 60 minutes and "old age and guile....."  Big Smile

Buckeye.....your comments about routing things during a project made me laugh.  The powers that be in Salem MA have torn apart about a mile of one of the main streets entering and exiting the City 3 times in the past three years.  Seems like spending (taxpayer) money is of no concern when you are given $ to keep redigging the same holes in the exact same stretch of road.  Poor planning, or yet one more example where state and local governments cry poormouth and couldn't manage a dollar if their lives depended on it?  They simply don't care.

Laz......we all know that you let your Bro win at golf on purpose because you are so sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. Wink

Chuck.....inquiring minds want to know.  Did you ever clean off the layout this past week like you said you planned to do?

Gotta run.  Later, gang.  TGIF and on the cusp of Halloween.

Jack

PS:  Time to replenish the Halloween candy we all devoured the past two weeks.  I ate 3 bags!  What did you eat?  I tried to tell my wife it was necessary to test the candy to make sure it was suitable for the little ones.  Wink

Got some errands to run and then fill greenhouse.  Might have some scattered frost tonight.  We are 20 degrees cooler than yesterday's record high.  I think it is a Yankee raid into the South.  Then off to the lake house until Sunday afternoon.  Coming back to work the Church's "trunk-a-treat" and fall festival.

Thanks to all who worked so hard this week.  My SS check will be happy.

Fife - Sorry to hear about your loss. You've spoken about Henry some during our visits.

We won our first softball game last night, where we earned it and not by forfeit. Smile Lost the second game though. We have a good core, but we lost a couple players for the second game due to other commitments. Oh well, hopefully we do better next year.

Have to go get The Q's automobile (said in voice similiar to Long Duck Dong in 16 Candles) tomorrow. Then have to take her to find her b-day gift from her father... this otta be fun!

Still need to put the poly on her rocking chair... need to get that done this weekend so it has time to cure before next weekend when the family comes over to celebrate her 29th!

Fife...Sorry about the loss of your mentor and friend.

We have been very busy at work.  Pursuit of two major projects, one a huge bridge in Northern Ohio and the other a high voltage under ground line for The Buckeye University.  The electrical line is needed to keep Wes's trains, phones and computers working perfectly.   These types of project entail an interview, where we get dressed up and stand in front of the clients and tell them how we are going to solve their construction problems.  For example, a detour cannot detour through another detour and the detour cannot store vehicles on the railroad tracks.  Black Eye

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 50s.  Last night was one for the ages.  We only had 9 players and they had 11.  We got a 1-0 lead in the first half and they tied it up.  In the second half, we got another goal to make 2-1, and we struggled to hang on, but they came back on us again.  Nobody scored in the sudden death overtime, which sent it to Penalty Kicks.  Our guys could not get it on-frame and we lost 3-2 on PKs.  I played the entire 60 minutes.  Not too many touches with the ball, but I was bodying people all night long.  Old age and treachery kept me in the game longer than I should have been playing.  I was tired.  We played in 40+ degree weather under the lights, and I was bundled up with layers.  Oddly I was not too cold.  It was a whale of a game.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Evening All,

Another Loooong day, don't understand how we accumulated so much!!  A lot to move and dispose of.  Gave a desk, table and chairs to a guy I just discovered who has a store around the corner.  He is struggling so much he sent his family back to her parents, and is now living in the store, and has been doing so for six months.  A hard worker just really struggling due to overhead costs, etc..

HOPEFULLY, we will finish the move portion tomorrow !

Submmbob,  Be preparred is was 80 here today, probably about 20 deg warmer than the day before, and rain in the forecast for Saturday.  So you've got some short term warm temperatures coming.

Ray, I got all the plans made for Cal Stewart on the Sunday.  Looking forward to it!  I should call Mike (the parts guy) and see if he is going to be there.  I think your right about how to handle the election.

Chief with all the meetings, when do you find time to play with your gun?

Jim,  How come the kids go Trick or Treating so soon?

Fife,  Sorry to hear about  your friend.  But the memories are forever!

RT, That sounds like a cool cap, probably should get one for everyone on this forum.

Jim, That is great news about your son, Straight A's !!  And with everything your family has gone through, you must be doing a good job holding everything together.

Joe, The robot costume sounds great looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Later guys been a long day, hopefully will have a LOT of available time in the future.

Have a great day!

Good evening all,

I finished my son's robot costume tonight.  I'll post a picture or two tomorrow.  It's not going to win any awards; it has a retro look to it.  He likes it - probably because I put lights on it.

It should drop down to 32 degrees tonight.  We still have the windows open which should make for some great sleeping tonight if the baby lets us.

Probe - Your brother will never have the return on investment you will have.  I doubt anyone remembers anyone from that show except Al and Kelly.

CNW - I played tee ball with a glove that was a Mike Schmidt glove and then moved up to a glove that was either Dave Winfield or Don Mattingly, I cannot remember.  The glove I used the most was just a plain old Mizuno that I still have - my son should be able to use it in about a year or so.

Jim - Enjoy the Odyssey.  FYI - You can actually get all four tires off the ground at once.  Don't ask me how I know.

Fife - Sorry for your loss.  I believe every man should have a few mentors in their lives.

Good night,

Joe

Howdy guys - cool temps in Saint Louis today.  Had a little party at work to wish a friend off, she's going to California!  She'll be in San Diego.  Too bad she's not into trains, as I think I could give her a couple good leads there Smile

No trains today, but I got my son's report card and he had straight A's, which is very cool.

Nice chatting with the guys tonight Smile

Tardis is ready, so let's get moving!

Just got home from funeral home.  My first mentor, Henry (police and model rr) passed away this weekend.  When I was a cadet on desk duty, he would give me old copies of Model Railroader, and once I had the bug, he took me trackside and turned me into a railfan.  Through him, I joined the Triangle & Western Model RR club, and shortly thereafter, I became the scenery chairman.  He actually lived across the street from my first duty station, and whenever it snowed heavily, he would let me crash on his sofa bed.  Henry was a charmer, and was also a huge Western Maryland Railway fan.  I mentioned him as one of my influences in my Jan '08 article.

Evening all

Tonight was Trick or Treat, I took the kids around the neighborhood.  They received WAY too much candy.  We'll let them have a pice a day for a bit then it will dissapear.

The 271 set came in today.  Nice pieces, I am happy with them.

We pick up a new to us '08 Odyssey in the morning.  Bride anxious to get it.  I'll tell more about it later.

Good night and may God bless

On the autograph subject, the only autograph I have is from Mike Wolf when he autographed a 2006 catalog for me while at the open house at Brady's Train Outlet in Greensburg.  It was great to meet and talk with him.  I've got the catalog stored in a drawer with Probe parts so that it is safe.

On the other hand, my brother went to some convention and got three pictures taken with that guy who played Bud on Married With Children for $25 each.Confused  He always used to tell me that I wasted money...

Has anyone been to Best Buy lately?  They are remodeling the stores in the area, and I am not sure if it is a chain wide deal.  I like the new look.  I picked up Assassin's Creed 2 for the 360 again since I started to miss the copy I sold in July.

I bought two AF steamer motors for $5 each tonight on ebay.  The only downside is that the wires are broken off both fields, but the armatures and brush brackets are good.  My 4 piece 302 is in need of an armature due to a badly grooved commutator.

Meetings and ribbon cutting with a "voice over" at the production studio in the middle of all of that.

Harold, cold up there.  We "might" get a little frost early Sat morning but may not.  Then warming again.

Lots of rain at the lake.  Buddy says it is already coming up fast.

Got my .22-250 Remington 700 Varmit Special with Leupold scope today.  May get a folding bi-pod for the 700.  Has the sling attachment and bi-pod attachment already there.  Heavy gun.  Bull barrell and extra big stock in the "fore" section [vented too].  The Thompson Center and Leupold scope is waiting for Warne rings [they used the last ones on the 700.  Thompson, MAN what a trigger!].  Gun safe is now getting real full.

Bob, glad you are doing good.

Later.

Autographs - My 2 fav's are Brooks Robinson and Richard Petty.  Others in the Nascar room are Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Harry Gant, Robby Gordon, Chad Little, Kyle Petty, Bobby Hamilton, Darrell Waltrip and Larry Foyt.

On the RR side - MTH's Mike Wolf, former Lionel front man Bill Bracy, Hal Carstens, and a "special" letter from Neil Besougloff.

Fifepup, ever the Ravens fan, has Terrell Suggs, Lardarius Webb, Terrence Cody, Haruki Nakamora, John Harbough, Ray Rice, and an autographed football by Joe Flacco.  He also has a few old Orioles signatures from Dick Hall, Boog Powell, and Mike Flannigan.

When we go to a signing, we always ask the player to "personalize" it with our names, so it kinda lets them know we aren't gonna hawk it on ebay as soon as we get home.

Now, the one that got away.  I worked a rural post for a dozen years, and Johnny Unitas lived in my area.  I would talk to him monthly, usually as he walked to the post office.  He knew me by name, and was always nice.  As badly as I would have loved to have had his autograph, I never felt comfortable asking him.  It was enough for me to just be a recognized face to him.

Cold and greyer. Made me clear the back deck, stack the furniture, take apart the grill and then hang the bikes from the garage ceiling and store the mower and hoses. Whew! Then took a break to vote 'early' - had to hold my nose... Wink  Clerk said I was voter # 12,970 - a new record for early voting. Talking about autographs and baseball made me wonder: did you have a 'signature' mitt? Not a real signature but a big-leaguer 'style' - mine (which I still have and use 37 years later is Mel Stottlemeyre. LOL.

Good morning all,

Don, sounds like some pretty scenery you have near your layout. Whistling Re election, just hold your nose and vote.

Dennis, interesting to hear you are keeping up your violin lessons.  I envy anyone who can play that instrument well.  I took  lessons in grammar school but we lost our teacher after one year.  How long does it take to make a good sound when you play?  Most of the kids in school programs I have heard sound pretty scratchy. My grandson is in his third or fouth year with the violin now in middle school.  I would like to be able to play some of the pretty waltzes.  I heard one recently on an album of music from the guilded age around 1912.  It was called Destiny Waltz by Sydney Baynes who I believe was an English composer.

Thought about all you hunters out there when I read in the paper today of the National Park Service need to reduce the deer population at Valley Forge.  I think the shooting will be done by the park service people though at night time.  I guess the deer are too many for the amount of forage.  Looks like man is the only predator left in some of these places to keep things in balance.

Time to run some trains.

Later,

Ray

Back at work for another weekWe are pretty much open for business at this point collecting photons. Still some bugs to work out on the new system, but we are really getting there. Speaking of bugs, the Mothinator 2000 XL is working well. I'll try and post some pics.

Jack - they are getting the snow removal equipment ready. We did get a bit of a dusting last week. And the moon was nice coming up last night.

The Camo Thompson Center .223 bolt action just came in.  It has adjustable trigger.

Chief, I knew I like you. I know opinions may fly, but was hoping not to hear about another AR-15 or knock-off, and you made me proud!

Brutus - glad to hear Char is doing better.

NavyJack - I unpacked the 8607 this morning. Looks in good shape, but has a few scuffs so it is a good candidate for a repaint (It's already gray but want black or blue striping. The tender is a bit rougher (324246) but w/ a little bodywork should clean up and paint fine.

Ol' Timer - weren't you making a scrap yard? The tender came w/ a busted up 6357 caboose shell. I can use the frame and trucks, but if you want the shell let me know. Would be great for anyone making a later layout where they are now using FRED's only.

Not much more work on the Corvair yet, but I did pick up  trans and axle seals so I can flip the axles (3.27 and 3.54) on the 3 and 4 speeds.

Oh, and not that I know squat about fire-fighting, but I don't think we do much drafting in AZConfused

Good morning all,

I have time for a quick note before I bury myself in paperwork for the day.  It was another wonderfully cool morning today.  It’s a shame to have to get out of bed so early on mornings like these.  The only thing planned for after work is to add the finishing touches to my 7y/o son’s costume.

Autographs: I pretty much agree with Laz and Chuck; I don’t see myself acquiring any nowadays.  However, I had acquired some when I was kid.  Tug McGraw signed my Little League glove and sometime back in the mid-80’s I was able to hang over the edge of the Yankees dugout one game and hand a baseball to Willie Randolph.  The ball came back signed pretty much by the whole team.  I was ecstatic, but alas, my older brother decided to use that ball one time and ruined it.  I still give him grief about it.  I have no idea as to the whereabouts of that Little League glove either – c’est la vie.

Good day,

Joe
