RockIsland52 Ray.......that's all the more for the rest of us. You're welcome to em Jack. Seriously though, I give you credit for doing a good training job on your dog after reading your later post. Picking dogs seems to be the same as horse racing. That's why opinions differ. Dogs I owned as a kid were aredale (check spelling). He was killed by a kick from a horse drawn milk wagon. Next was a cocker spaniel. She was the best ever. We also had a couple of sooners and they were good too. I never owned one but I like to watch Beagles. They seem like they are always tracking something when people are walking them. My brother had some deer hunting dogs once but they were wild. They were not pets. He got rid of them because they make a big mess if they are in pens to close to the house. I presently don't own any dogs but might have one if I were alone for company. Don't really have a good place for one right now. Ray

Good Evening from the Jersey Shore:
It has been a busy non exciting couple of days. Lately it seems that I have been asking for Prayers for friends and relatives who have passed on. Over the past weekend, the sister of one of the guys that I work with died. She was 53 and she had a brain hemorage. I had never met her and I went to the wake tonight to support Jack, who was taking this hard. What Jack told me about her and how she was his best friend and that she was always doing for others before she did for herself was an understatement about this fine lady. Mary Ellen, it seems was the Neighborhood Mom. She and her husband, don't have much themselves, but they shared what they had with all. The Deacon was doing the Service and he asked for people to share stories. All were from the heart and moving. This one elderly neighbor spoke how 2 weeks ago, it was her grandson's birthday. In tears she related how she, her daughter and son in law, are barely making it on what money they bring in and they could not swing a birthday party for the 7 year old. Mary Ellen and her husband, had a party for him and the entire family and made it seem that it was a surprise party that the Grandmother and parents threw, but had it at her house to surprise him. They would not take a penny and Mary Ellen said that she enjoyed doing it. Everyone who spoke, spoke about her unselfish kind deeds that she never looked for recognition, thanks or praise. Please keep Mary Ellen in your Thoughts and Prayers.
John
Sunny and 80's today.
Had a follow up appointment with my wife's approach surgeon today. All is well. One more doctor has fallen off of the 'have to see again' list. Looks like all we have to do now is to let the 'skelegrow' the doctors applied to her spine do its work for the next couple of months and complete the fusions.
All for now.
Good evening all,
The kids had a great first day of school; I'm glad they enjoy going - so is my wife! Work was fine, but I had a long meeting to attend. Those things wear me out more than any manual labor I have ever done.
R.I. Jack - Got to have the kids on a schedule. It's the only way to make sure they are rested enough and wake up on time...oh, and also allow wife and I to keep our sanity. Babies make great revolutionists.
8N - Glad to hear things are progressing well with your wife.
John - Mary Ellen and her family will be in my prayers.
Mike C. - Kudos to your boys getting their first win. I'm sure they are very excited.
S.J. - Had my root beer float early tonight.
I'm off to bed since I have to get up early and drive three hours or so to Altus, OK, for some training. I will return late tomorrow night.
Good night,
Joe
Chuck, your PT is a close (very close) second to my Norwegian soccer friend (and I wish I had some pictures to show you), and I can see why you enjoy the sessions.
Keep on training,

Nice chats with RT, Doug, SJ and Charlie tonight Tardis is ready and we have cupcakes galore still, banilla, and it sounds like some rootbeer? Let's go!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Just a splash and go......
John......prayers for Mary Ellen. And for those she has left behind. Some people do so much with so little, setting examples the rest of us should aspire to.
8n......good news on your wife. I hope she takes it slow and steady.
Joe......isn't it great when the kids look forward to going to school?
Later, gang.
Jack.

Good Evening from Central Jersey,
Rained the last 2 days, still better than Florida.
Still no job prospects, tomorrow the hunt continues, as I'll be home all day alone. Mom & Dad are heading to PA for diving.
I've spent the last 3 days taking a dear friend of mine to her Doctors offices. She's an ex-girlfriend and needs a hand. Her 2 year old is a handful and a delight.
My Princess started school Monday and so far, so good. I have high hopes for here. I'll see her in 10 weeks and it wont be soon enough. Really miss her.
Dennis, beginning to feel like a real fireman now, gettin back in the swing. I'll be going to Wildwood for convention in September!!
We have a special assignment Saturday as some WTC Steel will be passing through. Class A uniforms (FINALLY have mine all together) at 0800m then change and head South to Baltimore for my Exam.
Vermont? Love the place. It's been a while but Mount Snow in Springtime was a favorite place to be. Too cold in winter...and I don't ski
OK, will check back when I can..... all around
I am the monster in your head...And I thought you'd learn by now, It seems you haven't yet.I am the venom in your skin --- Breaking Benjamin
This will be a quick one as one of my meds is making me tired (which it is supposed to do). Got back from the scope last night. We had a real frog strangler on the way back and are getting a good one now.
Had an interesting day w/ our rather particular electrical engineer who is attempting to take charge of the adjustment of....a wheel bearing. Things have gotten kind of interesting, but hopefully we can distract him w/ another project.
Going to take the MG block over to a machine shop to have the short block assembled. Should save me some time since I have enough other projects on the cars to do. Hopefully a few suspension parts will go back on the Corvair by Friday. I also rode in Ron's Greenbrier to the club meeting again tonight. I rides nice on the freeway.
anj - glad to hear that FF has good support
Mike C. - put a piece of black tape over the check engine light and it will not bother you as much
Jack S. - did you get to see the Ticonderoga in Shelburne? I have a book about her, but didn't have the time to stop when I was there a couple years ago. She is the last walking-beam side-wheeler in the United States. The really cool thing? She was moved to her current location several miles with the use of rails. Let's see the O-gauge version of that!

Good early morning everyone! I didn't wake up early...haven't been to bed yet! Had an emergency which this type of case was one of the biggest we do and so, here I am at 04:15. Waiting till they get the patient to ICU and then I am out of here!
Jack, actually, they used to send me many, many coupons for free pints of Ice Cream. He has since retired and living well in Montana. I have not asked if he still gets the coupons.
Rich, I kind of remember a number of times in Wildwood...you know what I mean! Have fun and enjoy things.
Will remember Mary Ellen...sorry to hear of her loss.
Had a couple who we are friends with from church. A few weeks ago, the wife's parents died in a murder/suicide. It was horrible. This week, the husband's parents did the same thing. I have never met the parents, but the couple we know are wonderful and we really hate to see them suffer this much in such a short period of time. Leaves many questions without any answers.
Well, I am tired. Hope to catch up later today.God Bless,Dennis

john, i am sorry to hear about your neighbor. we both know that she has gone to her reward. my wife is like that also, always helping neighbors and being a eucharistic minister at our church. plus she is a saint for having put up with me for forty years. frank, how have you been doing? i have not heard much from you. i was kind of worried about you. thought you might have ate some of those yankee eggs from ioway. two guys from the other forum are coming here today to see if they can help me with some kind of way to run trains. the one gentleman is bringing along an erie triplex so i can see it. i will become spoiled. you guys are all great. navyjack
Good morning all,
IIABSDISEI with temps in the 70s. Sorry to hear about the losses that several have noted on here. That sort of news tends to come in bunches and hopefully will end soon. Got Lucas back to school ok. Had a nice visit with various relatives who are in the area including one daughter, son-in-law and grandson. I had bacon and biscuits again on the dining car for breakfast before sending onto "Points East". TBIL after the soccer game. I hope everyone has a good day.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a foggy 68 degrees. Sun is breaking thru. Going up to a sunny 84 degrees.
Today is a busy day. Grocery shopping day. I will be doing a few chores and the usual shopping details. No time for trains. Maybe later, I can catch a quick nap. Pizza for supper.
Dining car is here and it's the usual for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Thursday.
Chuck
John - A very touching story. Mary Ellen is definitely an "unsung hero".
Dennis - I can't imagine lousing all four parents with in a few weeks, especially under those circumstances. We lost our four parents over several years and that was tough enough.

Good Morning
Nice this morning sun and the windows open.
I see "he" bumped his thread back to page one again must have one hell of an ego. No plans for the day but it will be something outdoors thats for sure. Grannys babysitting so something easy to fix will be breakfast.....S.J.
Good Mornin' Ya'll From Clear, Sunny, and Mid 60s Cape Ann Taxachusetts,
After 5 days of no sun and constant, much needed rain, the front has moved out and temps are expected to hit the 90s again for four days beginning Sunday. President is still on Martha's Vineyard. After the driest July in nearly 6 decades, August was the opposite in many places in these here parts. Rain in Milton MA about 30 miles South of here has recorded 7.5 inches of precipitation in August, over double normal. We needed it.
NavyJack.....did you ever get your a/c issue ironed out? Hope so. The local grocery stores here usually carry the 5,000 btu units for about $90 and have already discounted and sold them off. Prayers a modest train layout for you becomes a reality, one with curves that can accomodate most of what iron you have.
Dennis.....I was dumbstruck by your news about both sets of parents of your friends. What do you say to them other than to offer condolences? Thank you for the pic of your daughter, priceless. Too bad she has to play with trains on the kitchen floor while you get a big layout all to yourself.....a clear case of child abuse. Apologies that Maximus the Doberman didn't hear you and SJ pounding on the door yesterday AM for breakfast, but I did find SJ's fork on the front porch near the chipmunk holes. Hope he didn't eat one of the critters. On second thought, hope he ate them all.
Bob.....I was checking my cell phone after ignoring it totally during our trip only to discover I missed your call. My apologies for not getting back to you, will be rectified today. Thanks for the high tech tip for those pesky check engine lights. The tire pressure monitoring systems are likewise a pain.....then when you check the actual tire pressure there is nothing wrong. Replacement sensors are not cheap. And resetting them only works for a time. I am quite upset about all of the things I DIDN'T get to see and do when in Shelburne VT., including a visit to the Shelburne Museum to see the Toconderoga.....didn't know about it, but my wish to visit the museum just 2 miles from our campsite fell on deaf ears. When the women take over the itinerary, shopping (which they can do anytime/anywhere) totally interferes with the truly important choices. We also missed two outdoor classic car shows.
Rich.....continued prayers on your job search, something will pop. But the FD stuff has been better than what you had to expect. Is the Princess going to visit you, or are you going back there? Helping a friend in need.....good stuff! Good luck on your test in Baltimore. I am curious.....does Fife really have a sailboat, and did Brent get some tattoos to cover the carnage?
MikeC......you must be very proud of Lucas, two years to go. I can remember back when I joined the Forum and was getting interrogated by the Chief about everything about myself right down to what underwear I buy. You were worried about Lucas wrapping up HS and getting into a good college. How time flies. You are blessed, except for the college expenses.
DougM.....you've also got one in the hopper and more in the cue. Ouch! You can save money by eating hot dogs, white rice, and mac/cheese until they are all through school.
HudsonJohn.....continued prayers for Mary Ellen. 53 was way too young.
RT.....you are a working fool! I think you have an ulterior motive for all of these work hours, to fund your train addiction.
Ray.....dogs are a blessing but, like kids, require $ and time. My wife and I have experienced some serious expenses. And around here, boarding costs between $40-$80 per day for the ones you can trust, with reservations required weeks and months in advance. Taking the dog with you when you need to travel is not always practical. Just going on a day trip has its (bladder/bowel) implications and restrictions. And when the weather gets really bad, you find yourself joining the dog out in the rain and single digit temperatures.
SJ.....I agree, it sure has been quiet around these parts without all that hot air blowing up out of the Southeast. A certain somebody probably got salmonella from all of the tainted eggs we sent him from up Nawth. I'm still waiting for some of his tomatoes.
Chuck......what is the deal with that sour look on your face at PT? Self-preservation?
OleTimer......fruit prices took about a 30% hike around here in the past two weeks, including the locally grown stuff like rasberries, strawberries, and watermellon. Locally grown corn @ $.50 per ear.
Roy.....I can remember when my kids got their drivers' licenses. When they drove the 2 miles to and the 2 miles back from high school the odometer somehow got screwed up and the gas leaked out. Or there must have been a lot of road work and detours I was not aware of. One thing you do have to look forward to....the day you finally get your auto insurance bill and the premiums plummet, when they drop off your policy.
Joe.....you make a good point. Food allergies/allergies, asthma, and autism. One has to wonder why these things have grown exponentially in our kids/grandkids versus about 6 decades ago. My father theorized that in the case of the former two it might be a lack of exposure to the things we were exposed to heavily as kids, and we developed more natural immunities. As to the latter, it is anyone's guess. An enigma.
Who did I miss? Gotta run. Later gang.
Jack
Aha so thats where I left my fork, eating hot mac & cheese with my fingers last nite was kinda messy. Even cooked over an open fire chipmunk does not taste like chicken. Filling though.
sir james I Aha so thats where I left my fork, eating hot mac & cheese with my fingers last nite was kinda messy. Even cooked over an open fire chipmunk does not taste like chicken. Filling though.
I also see that Sir J has lost his mind.
Afternoon all. Back from meetings. Got to mow grass and then go to ribbon cutting at 5:30 PM. At Town Hall now for signing of documents and etc. Yes, cooler weather and sunshine and now I am "stuck" at home instead of fishing. Finished my last "project" mat the lake house until cooler weather. Then replace back deck.
Hope all are well. Have not had time to back track and see "who shot who" while I was gone.
Later.
ChiefEagles .........Hope all are well. Have not had time to back track and see "who shot who" while I was gone. Later.
.........Hope all are well. Have not had time to back track and see "who shot who" while I was gone.
Chief.....never fear, in your absence we have been taking potshots at you with regularity and with impunity, just so you would not feel your lack of presence was not noticed.
Aloha all. Nice sunny day. Just back from spending more $ prepping the daughter to return to college Saturday, At least I talked the bride out of staying overnight. Jack, I agree with you and Dennis about regular early bedtimes for kids. Makes such a difference. Nice chatting with Sir J and Brutus last eve. Back to work.
Doug Murphy 'We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...' Henry V.
to jack and Ellen.
Dennis I could not handle that if it would of happened to me. I would of lost it completely. I just hope your friends have a strong relationship with the lord as I'm sure they need his guidance and support now.
A beautiful day, spent a lot of it outside. Granny brought the boys over for awhile, we spent some time together and then off they went, ahhh. They have a system, they ride their bikes, granny follows them with the car. Its about a mile. Banilla is ready for the thingy so jump in and lets go. Maybe go back and find Dianna Riggs tonite. thats sounds good...S.J.
I returned from my work trip to Altus, OK, around 7pm, which allowed me to put my kids to bed. The trip was fine; however, I spent more time in the car to get there and back than I did in Altus. Oh well, it had to be done and I had not yet traveled to that part of OK. The two best parts of the trip: I saw an old friend I had not seen in a number of years, and while traveling through El Reno, OK, I noticed some trolley lines running down main street. After a little research I discovered there is a RR historical society there in a former Rock Island depot. They operate a trolley in town. I think the family and I will take a Saturday drive there in the near future since it's only an hour away.
Dennis - I'll pray for your friends and their families. I have no idea what they must be feeling right now.
R.I. Jack - I've heard the exposure thought before. I can't say that is our case, our kids have been exposed to as much as I was as a kid. We also eat pretty healthy (with the exception of ice cream); we don't eat many processed foods, the wife and I are good cooks and we prefer fresh homemade meals.
S.J. - I will skip the Banilla tonight since I stopped at DQ on the way home.
Time to wind down with the wife.
Tally-Ho -- Back in time to get Emma Peel, I'm in boys!
Work, picked up subway sandwiches for the family, then killed some zombies, and chatted with RT and now SJ. New CTT looks like another great issue!
Kids are settling into school. Sister-in-law and her daughter are coming to visit for the weekend and tomorrow is my wedding anniversary too
Beacons on, guys, I'll be right over!
