navyjackhello guys i thought it would be time to send a serious email, from the heart and to take advantage of all the wealth of information available from my friends. here is the problem....my wife and i are both strict practicing catholics and we believe in babies being baptised when they are young. our kids, however want to wait till the kids are older and that they can decide upon their own religion. we believe they should be baptised as soon as possible. i have discussed this with our priest and he says the parents must agree and go to classes. they will not go. wife is a eucharistic minister and she has blessed our grandson many times and so has our priest, but any advice as to what we can do? we really love our grandson and would like for him to be baptised. thanks friends, navyjack

As I recall my Catholic Theology, the belief is that if you die not baptized, you will not go to heaven. Other religions, such as Baptist, believe a person should have a say in their religion choice. I understand where you are coming from.
Laura and I have made it a policy not to interfere in our grown kids lives unless they ask. And then we give our opinion and let it go at that. If they don't take our advice, and they don't sometimes, we ask that they not come back and ask us to straighten out the problem.
By the way, I went back and read the Forum Policies and found no prohibition to discussing religion.

Jack, I must confess that I by passed your original post, not because of the content but because my attention span was pretty short that day. Since then I have gone back and read it and commend you for your attitude. If you needed a venue to sound off wih some of these things, I have no problem with that. You have given us all some food for thought. I don't have an answer for all the questions here on the forum but I hope I am a good listener at least.

What did you do ? Get up on the wrong side of the bed? This is a tough crowd!
Anyway, I've been spending time on the layout improving connectivity. I'm not having any difficulty with DCS more like TMCC/Legacy issues. A couple of engines run somewhat intermittently. When I layed the track, and since I used Gargraves/Ross, the two outside rails are not electrically connected. Resulting in some of the engines (BEEPS) losing contact. (Suspect the wheel base may not be exact.) So, just installing a jumper between the rails. Resulting in significant improvement. Also, ever since I installed an operating crossing gate. The way I connected it was through a relay. The relay is energized when a car crosses an isolated track section. Then the contacts of the relay provide the power to the gate. I'm concerned about some voltage or current affecting the engines on the isolated section from the relay power circuit. Need to do some more investigation.
Better stop there.

dbaker48 RockIsland52Don and everyone.......sorry I got so carried away, something I am passionate about. Chief put me on immediate Pot probation and has limited me to 58 words or less per post. I probably could have hidden the most inflammatory, prohibited stuff in the text somewhere and Bob Keller would have fallen asleep long before he found it. Jack Chief - Probation??? NO WAY !!!! Jack - My comments were totally complimentary. As you know everyone REALLY enjoy your posts! You have to have considerable writing or journalism background. As I was reading your post I was thinking how long it would take me to write a similar document. (Great assumption that I even could.) I treads as if you did an outline than the document. And the subject of course is so VERY important. About 12 years ago I was very involved with the YMCA Indian Guides Program, with Chris. I remember being so impressed by the "leader" of the group, especially initially. He had 3 boys all of which went through the program. When we went on camping trips, the Dad (with about 5 others) were playing poker about dusk till 1 or 2 am. Myself and 1 or 2 other Dads always ended up with the boys. Playing games, ghost stories, crafts, or whatever. It really use to frustrate me, that he and the others in the poker game were just maintaining a "cover" for the poker game. I subsequently worked a Fireworks Stand for the group as a volunteer for a fundraiser. I had opportunity to see how much money was "siphoned" off to pay for a "adult trip:" to Hollywood Park, (horse racing), and a Cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. (with kids). The 3 day cruise was a gambling trip, while the kids ran free on the ship. Chris and I left the group, and continued on with a few friends without the "organization", we had a great time. Today - The leader of the group I mentioned above, lives with his 3 sons. (She left him the weekend following the youngest boys graduation from H.S.) The oldest boy is 25, has a part time job working in a bait shop, waiting for a court date next week for his 2nd DUI citation. The middle boy is 21 also living at home with his current girl friend, (waiting to get a divorce from his wife of 1 1/2 yrs). And working in a Department store. (This kid had won State recognition for math honors during High School.). The youngest boy graduated from H.S., 3 years this June. He attended Jr College for 2 semesters as an Art Major, then suspended for academic performance, and he hasn't "found" his 1st job yet. It is such a travesty, and the issue is the parents just didn't want to be bothered. Some of the things that went on you wouldn't believe. Anyway, I too am getting carried away. When my time here is done, and if I leave a responsible, well adjusted, and honest young man behind, I will have been a success! You and Papadiesel's post were right on! Thanks Again!

You and Papadiesel's post were right on!
Thanks Again!
Don and all,
Thank you for the kind words.
Like each of you, I find parenthood (and grandparenthood) a challenge and a joy. I have been on this forum for about two years. I have followed the trials and tribulations of so many with your children and families. And as each story unfolds, I come to realize that most of the accounts, initially frightening or grim, more often than not result in a happy ending, through divine providence, sheer effort, or plain old luck. When one is standing in the downpour that sometimes is life, it is sometimes difficult to envision a time when the sun will prevail.
I get a personal sense of hope in these real life battles and a sense of community here I have not have had the fortune to experience often, or often enough, in my own church group.
Maybe that is because face-to-face in my church group, some are overwhelmed, embarrassed or ashamed, frozen in fear, or too proud to ask for help that is there for the taking, even if it is a simple kind word The primary difference may be that open and sensitive honesty doesn't come easily for most (like me), and the fear others are judging us supercedes that much-needed-but-never-asked-for plea for help.
I think the relative anonymity here is a bonus, to help me write things that expose and examine my weaknesses and shortcomings. There are no judgements here on the Pot, just understanding, support, some advice, and acceptance.
In answer to your observation, no. there is no heavy writing or journalism in my background. It is the byproduct of two parents who, in their youth, lived through the depression, served and survived WWII, started a family, and had no one to fall back on when, post war, they had difficulty putting food on the table. They had to get by in a run-down 2 bedroom apartment sleeping 6. They "found" the money to provide us kids with a better life, and they "found" the time for family.
So when times go bad for me, I have to slap myself upside the head because I have so much more to work with than they did. What your Chris will carry with him are his memories of his parents' response to a medical crisis, or a Dad who quietly set himself apart by showing up at a YMCA camp and actually mentoring while some parents couldn't be bothered, choosing to play cards amongst themselves instead.
That gesture remains central to what I remember from my parents, an unqualified committment to their family. My son's high school educators called it choosing the more difficult right over the easier wrong. These teachers had the boys teamed up to shovel snow or rake leaves (gratis) for seniors before and after school, a community service experience my son will carry with him always. I like to remind him about his kind gesture, not by praising him for the act but by reminding him THAT I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN TOO! He hasn't taken the hint.....
If I can help just one struggling church member to write a resume or to help with a job search, using what my parents, educators, and the lessons of corporate America GAVE to me, shouldn't I do it? I have to constantly remind myself that change happens one person at a time, one event at a time. As far as paying forward, I don't do enough, don't feel good about it either. Something to add to my to do list today.
Now comes my suspension from the POT by the Chief because I have once again run off on a rambling missive.
Prayers for those who need them.
PS: After surviving 17 days without a refrigerator, the new one arrived and was installed yesterday. The good news is that we can store perishables again. The bad news is that the ice cube maker malfunctioned in my absence and flooded the kitchen and basement. And the knucklehead who hit my wife's new car continues to hide from his insurance carrier......but today is claim adjudication day, with or without his version of events. It's time for me to hit the battlefield!

Aloha all. Sunny and cool here. Supposed to in the 80s this weekend. Whoa. Prayers for Chief's mom, DJ's knee and for Bank's son and friend. Wish to could hear Jim's sermon on Father's Day. Did you see some of the subscriber-only videos on the other part of the site? Some are pretty nifty. I hope to try to follow Sir J's instructions today whilst the bride is out running errands. Discovered the teen has been missing class assignments. Speaking of parenting, we'll be having a discussion about that.

Morning all. Sun is finally out. Garden and Wifey's flowers/shrubs are loving it with all the rain we had.
Bob, looks familiar. Use to love to work on those engines. Good luck.
Mike C., is there a race track in Indy???? A want-a-be race track.
Banks, good luck to your son. Hope he gets on the GREAT NS. Stay away from that little short line CSX.
Got lunch meeting, hair cut and then pick up Lucy from groomer [her pretty day].
Later.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a cool and foggy 50 degrees. Going up to 74 today with some sunshine. Hopefully, lots.
Today is a busy day. Grocery shopping is the main event. Wife loves that job. Maybe, later this year, I can take it over again.
I need to go to the Fitness Center tomorrow, to keep up the exercises. If I let too many days lapse, I start to get stiff and hurt. The more active you are, the better you are.
Dining car has rolled in from "Points west". Cheerios for breakfast. I feel the need for an omlet soon.
Y'all have a great Thursday.

July CTT just dropped onto the mat, nice layouts. I'm jealous. The featured layout is bigger than my home.

Good morning all,
It may be sunny (for once) sometime today in SE Indiana. Practice speeds all over the place the past two days as teams are working on both race and qualifying setups at IMS. Good news is that everybody is within a second of each other. Bad is that everyone is within a second of each other, which could mean a no-passing snooze fest for the race. Went to see oldest one's choir perform last night. Not bad for elementary kids. She does a lot of extra work with the kids. I had the regular fare on the dining car before sending it on to "Points East". TBIL after yard work tonight. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on trainng,
Mike C. from Indiana
Back to work after a week off. The hiring of the mechanic is getting interesting. We could be done by the end of this week or back to square one.
Chief - hope you are feeling better
DougM - much happy belated birthday!
Banks - prayers for the family and friends.
Jack and Don - great words from you both.
Was somewhat of a tough week. Still dealing w/ that spot where they removed the lesion from my foot recently. Seems every time I go to the podiatrist my foot hurts for a while. Showed up at the office after I got off the mountain only to find out no doctor that day. She is on maternity leave. Teach me to not check my messages. Did get to the Ace that has the train stuff again for a few more pieces of track and replacement air hose for the Badger while I was on that side of town. Other stuff going on too, but that's another story.
The return of the train set is still a mystery. According to FedEx they received it on May 7. I emailed them last week regarding the status and got no reply. Just sent a professional but dissatisfied email. I know some of you have used this store and been happy, so I'm disappointed with their service now. I will call in the next day or so if I get no response.
On a brighter note, the engine went into the garage this morning:
She's a dirty one all right. Not as easy as a volksie but easier than a standard pull w/ a lift. That's a bit of weight there (500 lbs) and about 3 X 5 ft.
Here's a view of the crankcase:
Seems quite a bit in a small space. Has been taken down before I think, not that I am surprised. It is a neat engine, though. Hope to begin disassembly and get it to the shop to be cleaned when I get home next week.
Bob
P.S. also ran the 2025 w/ the Amtrak passenger set cars I have last night. Looked pretty w/ all the lights. Tried to get a video but the lighting was too dark. Still need to work on the derailing issue on the 1122's. Am using just the outer 4X8 loop for now.

Banks,
I'll have to get it out tomorrow because I can't remember exactly how to make the connections. Send me a PM so I don't forget.
Brutus,
I found the headset today. It somehow got mixed in with the N64 stuff.
I finally got around to testing the Silver Flash last night, and it is a strong runner. It looks to be low mileage as the shoes are original and aren't even worn flat yet, and it needs absolutely nothing mechanically. Now if I could find the other two cars to complete the set at a good price.
Spent the afternoon working on the 490 trying to undo some of the damage that was done to the inside of the shell by an individual trying to modify the inside of the shell to accept the chasis from a 360 Santa Fe. It would have been easier to swap the parts from the 360 chasis to the 490 instead of melting and removing the 3 tall posts from the rear portion of the shell. I've been trying to locate a good two hole ladder 490 shell, but have had no luck so far. Locating another diesel roar generator for the 491 B unit is seeming impossible as well.
Hello all,
Started building form for Dad's wall finally. Hope to finish it tomorrow and pour on Saturday.
Got the rear wheels back on tractor this evening also, They are heavy. (about 1200 lb each) Got my SIL to help as son and I struggled to get them off.
Bad news today. 22 year old daughter of a friend died last night. Either alcohol poisoning or aspirated vomit; So sad. Worst part is her little brother died five or six years ago at age 12 from undiagnosed juvenile diabetes.
Good news. Son had an interview and test today to become a laborer for the Chief's favorite railroad in the Altoona shops.
A prayer for both would be appreciated.
Brutus, the good news continues.
Fife, if you'll donate your boat and deliver it to Raystown Lake I may consider it........... Nah!! I've got too many other things to occupy my time and treasure.
Probe, my diner arrived today. Looks pretty good. I think I can make a respectable looking light cover from a piece of plastic tubing. I'll make a pair to keep it uniform looking. Can you tell me what the three terminals on the bottom do? If you could scan directions and send them would be even better.
Well I best join my lovely Mrs in bed.
Prayers for all who may need them

Jim, Char is doing very well Her numbers have stayed in the good range and are improving. She got over that virus and has been graduated from twice a week doctor visits to once a week and they are going to change that to every other week shortly
Prayers for us all and our friends and families. Especially for DJSpanky, Chief and his Mom, and JimSP and his family
No trains today - got the back yard finished and also down in the trees. The new trimmer works well once it is going, but the choke is a little tricky.
Tardis will be ready soon and banilla would be great. I've got chips and dips, too!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Good evening to all.Hope Chief is feeling better.Cant have a politician who cant talk.Or can we? Evening guys
Been trying to keep up on the pot, reading but not posting. Won a left switch on the bay for the All Aboard set. Now I have two lefts and two rights, going to expand the portable layout this year!
Jack - You are right on the money. I am giving the homily on Fathers Day, and the angle I am working on is the role and responsibility of Fathers as part of God's plan.
Buckeye - What do you think about those REDS!
Rich - I will keep your health issues in my prayers and do post those Flyer pictures!!!!! Not having the layout makes me hungry to see others!
Chief - How is your Mom?
Jim F - Char doing OK?
Hey all,
Was sunny and hot and now cloudy humid and hot like 90ish. Rained Monday, hot yesterday.
Jack – I knew there was a reason I liked you...
My LFD black water tanker showed up in the box! Cool. Also looks like my 5-40” Atlas O straights showed up today as well. $20 shipped. I like that – GoMotorBids on the track.
Been stalking the pot, having many personal and health issues lately, had 2 blood tests, EKG and peak flow done. Heart and lungs are great. Doc doesn’t like my creatin levels, I guess he thinks my kidneys are an issue. Personally at a crossroads, the next few weeks and months show prove interesting.
I love my Marx 666, I think that it’s the neatest thing...Just gotta add smoke pellets to it to check the smoke output.
The layout tour last Friday... too cool! Mostly S gauge, I really need to post those pictures for you Flyer guys. 6 car garage and the up stairs all layout. It was fantastic!
Ok that’s all from Paradise...check ya later!
Rich

Agree. Always leaned toward Lionel. Now getting MTH as they have NS modern diesels. Lionel came out with the NS Heritage series that does NOT exist. Stupid is as stupid does. Only draw back for MTH. One I got yesterday has to have a battery charge to get it going good.
Cloudy. Hey, sun was suppose to come out by noon yesterday. Oh well. Another .3 inches of un-forecasted rain last night. Garden is happy. Off to lake house [unless something happens] to carry up new stuff, paint an outside wall under new porch and check on roofer. Back tonight. Busy day tomorrow.
Have a good one.
I have to agree that lionel seems to be making some anticustomer decisions, too bad as they have always been my favorite. They don't even have parts needed for some of their current offerings. I read an interesting article in OGR about mrc offering a sound system add on for diesels at $44.95, i will have to try one....S.J.
