Regarding Daytona, from what I hear, the track has not been surfaced since the 70s.  The drivers like that as it has a lot of "give", but will now have to be re-done.  With a 31 degree bank, will be quite a job!  Once that is done, it will be "tight" and the drivers will not be as enthused.

Dennis.....First we mill off about 2" and then http://www.roadsbridges.com/Get-a-grip-article6147

Ol Timer....Happy Birthday!!  Wishing you many more great February birthdays. Happy B-Day  Remember, when you are in Buckeyeland, stop and see the layout.

Mitch...Glad to see you posting.

Doug.....Are the other museums free during February?

Chuck.....Why are you using the small snow gun?

Speaking of potholes, Central Ohio is the pot hole capital of the world. Cleveland and Cincinnati have  a less number of freeze-thaw cycles than we do here in Buckeyeland.

WOW !!!  Thanks guys for all the birthday wishes ! You brightened up an old batterd man's day . Thank you all who posted them and God bless you all . I brought my whole family in and sent links to the others to show them what a fabulous bunch of fellows you are . I told them .. it's a brotherhood .... friends from all over this country ... linked by one fabulous hobby and the best darn bunch of folks one will ever find anywhere !  Thumbs Up

Happy Birthday, and many more!
Had breakfast with friends I mentioned earlier.  What a great couple these folks are.  We are invited to Chicago area and may do so this summer.  It doesn't get too hot in the windy city now, does it?  We are looking forward to the visit.  Perhaps can catch up with Doug and some other friends up that way.

Cold and rainy down these parts.  Kids are going to Chuck-E-Cheese with bride as they are meeting some friends there.  I think I will just eat here at the hospital....food is better!  Will check in later, but hope everyone has a great afternoon.

OK NASCAR FANS:

THIS is why I'll be watching the Nationwide series:

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/31/dodge-challenger-nascar-nationwide-racer-unveiled/

You'll see it at Summer Daytona.

Chevy is sticking with that tired Impala, like Toyota is staying with Camry.

Ford & Dodge are still the only serious carmakers in racing.Whistling

And this is especially cool, is that the last post was 1320 (as in feet as in 1/4 mile drag racing!!)Laugh

Great looking car and a step in the right direction! There are some weekends when Nationwide is better than Sprint. Now it could be even better.

Good afternoon all,

It is Snohioing in SE Indiana.  Tried to go to work, almost slid off road, said to H--- with it, came home.  Getting closer to new job.  There may be a light at the end of the tunnel.  I did watch the finish of the Pothole 500.  One of these days I will learn the first 490 miles of a NASCAR race takes 5 hours and the last 10 miles takes.... 5 hours.  Come on IRL and F-1, although I may go to some Silver Crown races on dirt this year.  Champ cars on dirt, that is some spectacular racing.  I ran the 10 E last night with NO pile ups.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast.  TBIL any time.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Afternoon all

Happy Birthday Ol Timer and Wes

Snowing like crazy and very slick out.  Took about an hour to get to work, normally 45 minutes.

Got a 764 Express Office, the gray version off the bay last night.  Looks like a nice one.  Minor clean up and re-glue windows.  Been looking for one a about a year.  When it comes I'll post pictures.

May God bless

Nascar queries:  someone explain why the restrictor plates and restrictions on ground effects.  The former slows the cars down, arguably for safety reasons, and the latter seems to keep them from being safer.  Confused

Bill Elliot turned the fastest Nascar qualifying lap at Talladega at 213 in 1987......a record that may neber be broken.  Is that progress?  LeMans records are broken.  Why not Nascar?

Jack.

Restrictor plates and restrictions on ground effects do work against each other, but this years rule changes are a step in the right direction to correct this and increase the excitement for us spectators.

This year the holes in the restrictor plate are larger, therefore more horsepower. Bump drafting is again allowed anywhere on the track including in the corners.

Bill F - I like the idea of a NASCAR series based on Camaro, Mustang, Challanger platforms. Would allow for individual building of the cars as they were back in the moonshine running days. No limits on HP, total weight, Etc.

Rich - Kurt lost the draft and slipped 17 places. The same thing happened to Harvick. Went from 1st to 7th in the last lap or two.

Happy B-Day Ole Timer!Bow

Good Morning...Banged Head

Jack – You have a PM!!!

Good to hear that Char is back home..

Angel – Brutus & Family and any one I’ve missed

Well, that Pothole 500 sucked, Nice that McMurray (a previous Dodge driver) won.

Kurt looked strong but was up to 3rd then –wahappen? went to 20th?  3 Dodges out 43, what kinda odds is that and Petty with a Ford...geez like 1969 again.

Yeah, I don’t like the NASCAR format with spec cars...they pretty much banned Mopars from racing because they are GM lovers...Ford & Chrysler were the real deal in the late 60’s & early 70’s....

The Nationwide series is supposed to allow the new Challengers in, but haven’t seen ‘em yet.

I like the Dark Haired girl....Drag Racing season opened on the Left Coast yesterday!!!  NOW THAT’S REAL RACING!!

Priced most of the inventory to sell on Saturday, a few more to do and then we can sell out and make room for more.

Work beckons – see ya in a bit

Aloha all. Sunny and 17 right now. Supposed to get an inch or two overnight. Back at the office where no one else is working... at least it'll be a quiet day to catch up and the Art Institute is free this month so I'll go visit my favorite works at lunchtime. What a disaster of a race. They seemed to almost run out of things to talk about. I wish the cars were not so cookie-cutter - liked following the brands as much as the racers. Junior skunked again. I lucked out as the bride only wanted chicken wings for dinner last eve. Then spent the rest of the evening working on a school project with the teen. Sugar Grove is a nice little place, Dennis.

It took the hiring of Nascar engine builder Holman Moody by Henry Ford to get the raw speed and reliability to win LeMans and unseat Ferrari as the car to beat.  427ci of pure, unrestrained Nascar modified muscle, and every American knew it.

Ford GTs won LeMans four years straight, 1966-1969, including a stunning 1-2-3 finish in 1966.  The cars were hitting never before heard of speeds on the Mulsanne straight.....over 230mph 45 years ago out of a naturally aspirated engine.  Yes, the drivers were important (Foyt, Gurney, Hill, et al) but it was the combination thrill of the car, the drivers, and the team that got Americans all cranked up.

And there was no mistaking what you were looking at with those Fords, up close and at a distance.....

Good Morning:  It was 18 when I first got up to take the pup out and stoke the stove. It is now 25 and the forecast is snow. I am glad to have this day off, I need a break, but thanks to modern technology I have a 1:00 conference call on how we are going to handle the storm.

Chief: That Yankee Bar-B-Que and Chicken was finger licken good. If the Colonel had my nephew's recipe, he would have been a General. The rest of the food was excellent right down to the lasagna and ziti. He fed over 20 people and we had a great time between watching the Olympics and the Pothole 500.

Off to replacing the kitchen sink faucet and a few other chores. I hope to disassemble, inspect, lube (with 5w20) , reassemble the GG1 today.

Morning.  Sunny and cold.  No snohio here.  Must admit, Yankees are better at patching pot holes than we are.  Why?  More experience as they are one big pot hole.  Meetings starting at 11:45 until 9 tonight.  Really a busy week.  I know the beavers are mad.  Found their dam in one of the creeks that feeds the pond.  It has a big hole in it and the water is gone.  Friend Fred will check it again this afternoon as I will be tied up in meetings.   May I wish the Yankees a very good day of snohio and enjoy.  [I see why Buckeye enjoys snow.  He does not have two big yards to mow in the summer.  Snow gives him the same as me mowing.  He gets out the snow blower and does his chores.  As for the over the hill horn blower that lives in an iglo in Ioway, he just does not know any better.  Why so many Yankees move to NC?  They know better.]

 Morning to All,

It has been weeks since I checked in.  The snowhio around here has been keeping me busy.  I've used my snow blower more this season than in the last 10 years combined. The forecasters are calling for 3 - 6 inches more today/tonight and some are making noises about the possibility of what they are calling wrap around snow that follows the low up the coast.  So far we have lost 9 snow days. Last week was a total bust, no student days at all. Our parking lot at school is really not cleared enough for all staff to have a place to park yet. Two 24 inch plus snows in 5 days will do that.

Took my best girl out for a late dinner last night.  She was patient enough to let me watch the end of the Pothole 500 before we went out.

Got to get some chores done around here today.

Take care,

Mitch

Did you ever wonder how the track crew at Daytona can fix a pothole that will stand up to the pounding of over 40 cars travelling at 190mph+,  and our own road crews cannot?  Need to hire those guys up here.  Smile,Wink, & Grin

Chief's call to Bass Pro Shops got McM his ride and hence greatly influenced the outcome of this race,.

Morning all,
Getting ready to head out for breakfast with our friends from Chicago.  They came here to thaw out a little.  Raining right now, at least it is not that white stuff....YUCK!
Regarding NASCAR in general, one of my friends at a church I used to attend up in Harris County was a Nascar driver way back.  He used to race against Dale Sr.'s father.  He often spoke of the type of cars they drove when it was just this side of the bootlegger history.  Real interesting guy to talk to.  He had no use for the Jeff Gordons and other personalities we are seeing these days.

Bob, enjoy the photos of the mountain out there.  I have thought about booking a Elk Hunt out in AZ.  Real pretty place from what I have seen.  You have that 2025 looking nice.  I have one, but it needs some TLC.

Well, I am on call again and already got my first page this morning.  Will head in later and take care of some business.  I look forward to the day when I no longer have to take call....about 15 more years?  Guess I will stick it out till the kids are done with college.
God Bless,
Dennis

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cold 10 degrees. Going up to 31 today with some snow showers on the way.

Today is a busy day. Chores to do and PT this afternoon. then an errand to run. No train time today. I need to clean track.

Nascar should be ashamed of themselves. After all this time, since last season, they have to do pot hole repair during their biggest race. With 200,000 fans watching.  Good race, though.

Buckeye......Give me a couple of hours to get the cannon ready.

Dining car is here for the usual breakfast.

Y'all have a great Monday.

I can't believe a race track developed a pot hole, but then again the track is in the South so ignorance is bliss.

What do you expect?  They just discovered asphalt and they kept fixing the pot hole with dirt!
