Jack - come on and run my trains any time, lol!

Navy Jack - Welcome!

Bob - UP Challanger (I looked it up) - sweet!

Thaks for all the prayers and good wishes here and elsewhere too.  I sure appreciate it.  Had some intestinal problems this morning - hospital food?  Probably stress and sitting all day yesterday in bad chairs.

Got an AT&T usbconnect thingie for my wife's netbook.  Ran some other errands for her and visited with her for a couple hours at the hospital.  She finished one bag of her chemo drugs and started another as I was leaving.  No touching, kissing or contact already, but I think right now it is because she is on these high dose drugs - I don't think they have knocked her immunity down yet, as hospital staff said she could have outside food today.  All she wanted was double chocolate chocolate chip cookies.

The computer card works, but you are limited to 5GB per month.  So, no streaming online videos etc - we did do videochat tonight with her and me and the kids and it worked better than I expected considering she is essentially on a dialup.  Used about 20 MB so far today.  I expect that she will not exceed her 5GB limit.  The bad news is that I had to get a 2 year contract on this thing - ug.  I think I can buy out of it once she is home, not sure.  Might be cheaper to do that than pay $50 a month for another 24 months (22 or so by then?).

The only trains today was that I picked up a newer issue of OGR at the store while getting her cookies.  I haven't even looked inside.  I did read the last two CTTs and Trains magazines yesterday at the hospital.

Come get me in the TARDIS guys and we can let SJ drive tonight - I got some good sleep last night and feel a lot better Laugh

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Welcome Navy Jack !  It seems you are already be hit with a lot of indoctrination!  Definitely biased and untruthful !

I think someone needs to cook up a new bag of Grits.  Chief Eagles has a habit of cooking them once, and then leave them set around for awhile and keeps snacking on them.  Of course they dry up, turn hard begin to grow stuff,  but he keeps eating on them.  Then he begins these halucinations and says all these crazy things.

  "

ChiefEagles
Then you have the down right mean, Don Baker [know as Shake and Bake = earth quakes and fires].  Now as for me, I'm the very nice Southern Polite Gentleman who loves grits and sweet ice tea.

That is sooo far from the truth !  Just today I have received the honor from  "submmbob" (previous page, he is a well known Geologist and Scientist)  Thanks for the updates Don and keep 'em coming. You generally see what we get first. You are officially part of the weather monitoring service of the Submillimeter Telescope.

In addition to that compliment, you will also notice from my signature below, I have also received the Dubious Honor of Membership in OTTS, this highly prized distinction was awarded to me by Buckeye, Chuck, Laz and others.  Again another testament, (and I will state probably a situation of jealousy from the Chief.)

Yet, another honor is the naming of the Airfield located at Doug Murphys layout, "Baker Field" this to was bestowed upon me from yet another great and well respected forum member.

So with all that you certainly can see where everything you hear is certainly not true.  And besides all that, with out a doubt I am the nicest guy I know.

Now that THAT has been cleared up.

In taking down the Christmas decorations last week, I cam across an old LW transformer I had forgotten about.  This has always been one of my favorites because of the illuminated dial.  It had been sitting aside for a year or two.  It WAS in good working condition, however the power cord had really deterioated, cracked and broken insulation.  So I took it apart replaced the cord and reassembled it, that was over a year ago.  However, when I had reassembled it I bent the copper wiper blade and it was folded in half, which would cause it to break.  So found a guy who will replace it and even has the parts, so I shipped it to him, (Schomberg, ILL.), for $20.  Of course I pay the shipping.  I don't have a current need for it, but it doesn't make sense to keep it around not working.  Will proabably have it on a test bench when I get it back.

Got, all the chores done and ready for the rains, gutters cleaned, pool drained, train room projects identified for the upcoming time off.

BTW found a dead squirrel in the pool last week.  Apparently it fell in the pool, then the pool cleaner held it to the bottom and it drowned.  (pics available).  A few years ago we had a Possum buy it in the pool.  And even a pair of Mallard Ducks set up housekeeping.  They had a brood of 7 ducklings, and where there for almost a month before we got them to the park.  Pool security is a major issue of course, we keep all access points locked, but if someone was intent they could get in.  Primary purpose is to keep kids and children out, and I'm fairly confident that it is place.

One last comment, when I was outside on the ladder today, saw the neigbor.  She smiled (really big smile too, really animated!) waved and said hello.  Talked about the weather a bit, and noticed she IS really gaining weight !  Must not be doing as much dancing, or changed her routine. ??

Take care, and hope everyone has a great day!  Again Welcome, Navy Jack !  (Don't think bad of the Chief, he means well, BUT he gets confused easily!!

West Coast Submillimeter Telescope Weather Report: (1.15.10)  Early morning darkeness, gave way to very cool temperatures, and omnimous black clouds on the western horizon at dawn.  As the sun came up the clouds lightned up were much less threatening.  Approx. 10:00 am, sun was bright and warm, ended up pleasant day.  Afternoon proceeded with some minor patch clouds, mostly jet con trails.  Evening brought on more dark clouds and fading light with lower tempaertures.  No reported precipitation, did have minor shaker at 04:15 in Inland Empire area.  (no damage, no injury, mostly desert area.)  Good projection for Eastern Areas. Smile

(Bob, what is a sumillimeter telescope, anyway?  Does it have anything to do with millibars?)

Good evening all,  I have been trying to catch up on the forum.  Thought I was just one day behind but a lot has been posted since I looked last time.

NavyJack, Welcome aboard!  I was not in the navy but grew up in a Navy town.  Norfolk/Portsmouth area of Virginia.  I don't have to tell you what the Navy used to call Norfolk.  I hope it is better now.  I moved away from there in 1958 and have been on the West Coast since.  One of my two sons did serve in the Navy Reserve and was called up for the first gulf war.  He was flown from here to join his ship, Tarawa, which was already in the gulf at the time.  Some of my sisters married navy guys, Coast Guardsmen and Marines.  I think we have had everything in our family except someone from the Army.

My biggest concern lately, like Don mentioned is the predicted rain we are suppose to get next week.  I live in a foothill town and they are predicting the heaviest rains in my area.  I spent the day today sandbagging the front of my garage/train room door in case the water tries to get in there.  I have a new sump pump installed and ready behind the garage to pump water out of a low spot where it accumulates.  I also set up another submersible pump in a little dressing area between the pool and garage which I can turn on when needed to pump water out of there.  The water level in the pool is already below normal and I'm leaving it that way for now.  I have siphon hose at the ready near the pool to take more water out when necessary.  My biggest fear is that if we have a power failure while the rain is backing up, my pumps will stop.  That is why I sandbagged the garage door just in case.

Brutus, glad things are going well so far for your Mrs.

Pat, I think you and I came on board about the same time but I will never catch the chief either.

Tried to peddle a couple of engines on the internet on a buy/sell section but buyers are too picky.  They want mint condition at give away prices.  Mine are already priced low so I don;t feel like knocking my self out to sell these things.  They can take them or leave them.  It's all the same to me.  Just need to clear some stuff out to make more room.

Friend of mine in TCA reported that part of his train collection was stolen.  Among other things were about 100 6464 series box cars like new in original boxes.  Many of them belonged to his late father.  He is heart broken.  He recovered a little of the stuff from some hobby shop in Temecula, California where the thieves had sold some of it.  He had a post on the OGR forum about it.  I don't know if he put one here yet or not.

Getting late now, so I will sign off.  See you tomorrow,

Ray

A quiet night tonight. Weather is still fairly good.

Don - thanks again for the weather report. And this is a submillimeter telescope:

10 meters of pure high frequency radio fun. We work anywhere from 200 - 700 GHz in the high radio frequency range looking for various molecules in our solar system, the local galaxy, and out to the edge of the known universe. Given the high frequency this is the most accurate radio dish built to date. Average error across the 10 meter surface is 15 microns. It has to live in a building because of this and your weather reports help in keeping it out of the weather and thus preserving the surface and the accuracy. Years ago I used to talk to our 12 meter scope on Kitt Peak about the coming weather. But being lower frequency, if they were even open they considered the weather great. We have access to NWS reports and satellite views, but I listen to all the weather info I can find.

Found out that MTH makes a 6YB that can run on 42" curves. This could be trouble. Did a redesign of the first 4X8Big Smile

Mornin' boys.  Had to slip on my hip-waders before coming to the Coffee Pot this AM Whistling.  Chance of rain and 38 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Living room all painted, now need to get crackin' on the trim.  Took a breather yesterday, and the boy and I had a table at a local antique/toy show.  An adjoining vendor gave me a nice compliment, saying that Chris really handles himself well with customers.

Welllllll, that other ravens team showed up last night.  Too many dropped passes, too many untimely penalties, two many fumbles ended the season of inconsistency.  That leaves us 28 dats 'til DAYTONA!  Speaking of 28, read a good interview with Robert Yates this morning.

submmbob - Cool pic.  With some spare STAR WARS models, could probably kitbash a neet little scene like that on a mountain side.

Good Morning all

Welcome NavyJack!

Jim F – I will have you wife in my mind during the intentions during services today.

Yesterday was busy.  Had an Eye Drs appointment, and will need new glasses.  Eyes actually getting better, at a distance.  Doc said happens as you get older.  Then went to with the truck Cincinnati with grandson to get youngest daughter and new bed.  All worked out well.  As we were carrying out the old set one of her neighbors wanted it so I did not have to bring it home.

Got to go

May God bless

Jim

Aloha all. Weird weather here - grey, seems warmer but everything covered in a sort of frost - looks like an ice storm but it's not slippery. Off to church in a few. I look forward to visiting Navyjack someday  - he lives west of CL - I owe him a catch-up phone call too!  Wow, what a great idea, I need to put a sublimitter scope on the top of Eagles Ridge on the layout. Gotta keep that photo. Good news about Mrs. Brutus settling in. Looking forward to some football later today.

hello doug and guys.  the first time i met a guy from the south was when i went overseas in the navy.  he had gotten his first pair of boots from the navy, but he would have give me the shirt off his back.  his wife was real nice too and nice to us.  my wife used to watch their baby.  like so many other nice people we lost track of them.  i was in from 1966-1982.  i had about a year of broken service.  had a family and was screwed in the head, could not get a job so i went back in.  i was a ct, later forced to change to yn and retired as yn1.  (no upward mobility) at the time.  i love the acl and the virginian, am god-fearing and have had my first cup of (arabica bean) strong coffee this morning.  i guess the arabica bean coffee apeals to me because of my german descent.  the krauts trade a lot with turkey, like we do with columbia. bob your trains are cool.  it is nice how you can have them displayed.  i have mine thrown in boxes in closets. see i cant walk, and only get to see my trains when i get them.  my wife is sympathetic, but she is taking up my slack, and does not have time to help me with the trains.  i cant walk, and cant close my right hand.  bogus huh? anyway, i am glad to see pictures of how you have your trains displayed.  is that a pre-china lionel gp-7 that you have?  i have an acl gp-7 with railsounds, that i have never heard.  it is still the pre-high detail u.s. made style.   thanks jack

Welcome navyjack, I have no war stories to tell.

Don B. you must be special, I was born and raised in Ohio but was blackballed from the OTTS.   :)

Chief if that engine was any other brand you could have set it on the track and off it would have gone to work. No sitting around waiting for a battery to charge.

Overcast again today but still in th 30s. Big train show today, I will be leaving soon. Have a great sunday....S.J.

hello sir james, by the type of train brand you are talking about, i will guess you are talking about either, lionel early vintage, or williams.  i have heard that they are the most reliable.  i have a williams reproduction blue/orange trainmaster that supposedly is the first reproduction of the engine and it is gorgeous.  i have not seen it run, but have heard that it has real high quality can motors(probably no reverse) i just enjoy looking for now. thanks jack.  p.s. i love your train shelves in the picture behind you.

Morning all!

Had a rough week this past week but it all came out OK. Got a call from my sister at 10:30 pm Tues night telling me she was getting ready to be transported via ambulance for emerg surgery, that her husband had left earlier in the day for a business trip to Moscow, and that she just "wanted to let me know" and if I would call our brother and let him know. My wife, daughter, and I talked and then the daughter and I packed, jumped in the car, bought gas, and hit the road to Houston starting at midnight. Daughter drove 3/4 of the way and I drove the rest since she does not know Houston (where I was born and raised) or the Houston Medical Center, which is HUGE now. I had told my sister that if they could keep her stable they would not operate until first thing in the morning when they have full staff. We made it to her hospital room at 4:30 am and she was scheduled for surgery at 5:30 am. With luck her husband landed in Moscow at 3:30 am (our time) and made it through customs by 4:30 am. My cell phone worked great for calling and text messaging him so I was able to keep him informed through the pre-op, operation, and post-op procedures and doc/nurse discussions. Had we lost touch with him I would have been able to make decisions for my sister in her husbands absence. The hospital was great in dealing with all this. She was out of surgery by 7:30 am and all was well - heck she was walking later that day. Daughter and I were able to stay at my sisters house and catch a few "z's" that afternoon and then we went back to the hospital. My sister has great friends and all were offering help (one is an RN at a neighboring hospital) and another that lives across the street came over and spent the following night with my sister so daughter and I could drive back to Dallas. So all is well and she is recovering. Her husband was able to avoid a very expensive emergency return ticket and continue his trip in Russia and on to China. It is an amazing world we live in for a guy who grew up in a house where one counted the rings on the phone to know if the call was for our house and the weekly call to grandmother in Akron was set up in advance with a long distance operator who coordinated with other LD operators who all connected the call at the agreed time.

NAVYJACK,

Term STAY FROSTY, came out of the HBO series Generation Kill.  It was a show diplicting the Iraq War.  One part was entitled STAY FROSTY, where it was about the horors of the war but at end their SGT. treated the men with warm milk shakes.  It was good and funny if you saw this episode.  That's why I use the term, along with my own interpertation of BE COOL.  But STAY FROSTY sounds better.  Sometimes I'll just use the letters SF.

Good afternoon, Ya'll, from ominous-looking Taxachusetts:

Jim.....thanks for the update.  Prayers and good thoughts continue for Char.  BTW, please save your strength.  With your plate so full, I feel guilty and undeserving of your taking the time for these updates.

Four inches of snow forecast.

navyjack.......is your Poplar Grove near Rockford or South of Rock Island?  I'm originally from Chicago, in laws live in Elgin.

Don......thanks for the update on your neighbor.  With that weight gain it sounds like she needs your help as her personal trainer getting back in shape.  Make sure you take pictures of the workouts so she can garner some encouragement and motivation from the before, during, and after pics.

Laz.......you bust me up.  A stop with your wife at the ammo store on the way to the party.  You must be a gangsta.  "Stay Frosty" coming from you might mean 'Yeah, I iced that guy at the train nerd party for insulting my transformer choice."

Buckeye......one of your posts listed all of the clothes you weren't wearing when you went out.  Is Snohio a clothes optional state?

Fife......I was rooting for Baltimore.  I'm bummed two weeks in a row.

Roy......scary turn of events.  Prayers for your sister's speedy recovery.  It is great to see folks outside the family jump in to help.  Better yet, to have a daughter drop what she is doing and carry the ball.  Made you proud.

OK......we've got carpetbagger, scalawag, bad, mean, downright mean, unforgiven, ok.  I need the rank order so I know who I salute and who is supposed to salute me.  Some help here, Chief.

I'm watching a couple guys testing various toilets' ability to remain unclogged.  Don't see any of the real world stuff my granddaughter "accidentally" tries to flush.  A clear glass angel with gold metal wings attached to a suction cup and a metal hook, plastic animals, doll clothing, a half roll of "bathroom tissue.....what do these guys know?

Gotta go get gas for the snowblower.  Later, gang.

Jack

Home from the trains show. Very well attended. Big HS with two large parking lots full. We had to park in a church lot and then walk back to the school. Shuttle service was offered from a farther location but I never saw the shuttle. Heaps of O and HO some were offering deals others were asking way more than I would pay. Oh I spent three dollars plus admission...S.J.

Buckeye Riveter
Iowa Jonny.......Please send me money to get me back home.  Yesterday I ventured out and walked along the beach and saw scantily clad women on the white sand with a clear blue sky, a blazing sun and a gentle breeze.  I just can't take in anymore.  I beg you!!!! (BTW, I did get a BUBBA GUMP shirt to wear while fishing.)

Buckeye--I just added $1,000.00 to your PayPal account, get out of there NOW!  Sadly, those dreaded southern sun rays and temps have affected your decision making abilities, just let me know if you need more $$$.

C'Boys really stinking it up at Minn Vi-Queens. Must be some other guys showed up mascarading as the C'Boys?

Jack - the daughter helping drive was great. I am getting too old for all night forays Wink

LAZ - can't believe that the beef jerky didn't fix things up with the Sig Other.

To add to our grief - the washing machine just "threw a rod." Off to Sears after the game!

Regards, Roy

Good morning all,

Roy, glad to hear that your sister is doing alright.  That was a nerve racking story.  Prayers for speedy recovery.

Still braced for the big rain but today is beautiful and sunny.  Makes me wonder what those weather guys are up to.  It would not upset me if they were wrong.

Chief, are instant grits any good?  I saw some Quaker instant grits at the market yesterday.  I think they were cheaper than the regular grits which you have to cook for a long time and they came in a big box.  Looked like too much for me.  Might go bad before I could use it all.  Had a politicallly incorrect breakfast yesterday with grits, eggs and a pork chop but it was gooooood?  Back to the straight and narrow today with oat meal and a banana.

Now it's time to run some trains.

Later, Ray

hello jack, poplar grove, illinois is located about eight miles east of rockford, and eight miles south of clinton wisconsin.  right in the middle of the state line.  we are about 50 miles away from elgin.  we get wisconsins weather here, there is a lake here, and that makes the weather worse also.
