Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka from a snowy ice-covered Crystal Lake. Looks just like the final scene in A Christmas Story. On it's way east to Sir J and Mike C. Fortunately, it's just warm enough to be kind of melting.  Missed Brutus' call last night because I was working the Christmas services. I'm giving dramatic readings from the Bible. Not used to being on this side of the cameras. More services today, then pizza for Christmas eve dinner. Going to visit my inlaws for the first time in many years tomorrow. Should be interesting.

Mel, thank you for your kind words. I sure appreciated the support from my friends here.

Rich, I'm glad you can comfort the Princess. Our Princess is driving me crazy after being home from college just 4 days.

Doug, I am confused by the siderods. It looks like they're riveted together. I can't see a way to take them off. But there's got to be.

Prayers for those traveling. Like Jon said and my recent experiences prove, it's great to be able to appreciate family and friends this season.

HI GYZ,

23 and cold here to get freezing rain tomorrow.  Happy CHRISTMAS EVE!  Hope everyone a great day today and tomorrow.  And remember to get out and take a walk after you all have feasted.  A good way to make room for more without that too full feeling.

Morning all!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Jon:  I'm in Minnesnowta...I'll go visit.  We may need to delay our trek home with this mess, already planning to cancel our plans for Christmas day.  I agree with the Chief...I'm in for some of that warmer weather.

Plans to go to MiL's for Christmas Eve, and we're bringing dinner?  ...if we get stuck, at least we'll have food.

Hope everyone has a blessed Christmas Eve, and if Santa hasn't brought your gifts early (or made you go get them), here's hoping he's good to you.

Dennis, you know if you and the "gang" need a "pit stop", you are welcome here and you know where the keys to the lake house are hidden.

Why does Dennis and his family need a key to a pit toilet?

Only in Ohio do they allow pit toilets.  The other 49 do not allow them.

Jon, as an educated person, why don't you move?  Whistling could not resist.

Rain here for Christmas day.

Reclinerized too long.  Off to bed. [after a trip to the mall at 10 PM followed by one to Target, all staying open to midnight]  When will she go back to work?????

Sleep tight.

 Evening All !

Had an interesting day,  Very slow at the office, but had other activities of interest.

Received Jon Englehardt's, "John Deere" car today.  It surely  is interesting.  I'm not sure he will actually get it back.  Extremely impressed with the car!  The history that was with the car was interesting and very thought provoking also.  So will try to get the pictures done soon and get the car on the way.  (Talked with Jon briefly, will try and call him next week when things aren't so busy.)

Then with the extra time I had, I worked on a project I had been considering for over a year.  Buckeye has this fantastic website on Shutterfly, and its free.  http://lioneltrains2.shutterfly.com/    If you have not visited his site, take the time to do so, it is fantastic.  Anyway, I've wanted to create one myself and I had initiated it, but havn't done anything to expand it.  So worked on it for awhile today.  Not much done, but a start.  The possibilities are profound!  Thanks Buckeye for the inspiration!

Visited a friend this evening who built a 12x12 winter layout in the garage.  He keeps the door open for the neighbor-hood to visit.  It was really enjoyable and interesting watching the kids AND adults Ooooing and Ahhhing over everything !  Was really great, true Christmas and holiday spirit.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, and safe return for those traveling.

Doug;

I just read page 28 on the coffee pot this morning. I am that far behind.

My prayers for the soul of your Dad and for you and your family. It is always hard to lose a parent but know that he is with his Lord in a better place.

God bless always,

I had to work today, but I came home to find the Super Motor sitting on the kitchen table.Thumbs Up The commutator and brushes are slightly dirty, but it is in great shape otherwise. I have no idea why someone put this on a 300 Atlantic chasis.  The weight of the motor causes the chasis to tip back fully.  I'll do the swap tomorrow or on Christmas. I've got to work again from 8-4 tomorrow.Banged Head

HI GYZ,

Real cold tonite down to 20 already.  Me and wife and dog had our Christmas tonite.  Ate Alaskan King Crabs and fries then exchanged gifts and drank a few OL MIls.  Went down and played trains NO PILE UPs.  Came up and ran trains again under tree NO PILE UPs.  AH a GREAT night indeed.

 Good Evening

Finished the immediate Christmas shopping, need 2 gift cards for my Aunts, which I'll mail after Christmas.  Packed more LGB and a GG1 set and UPS'ing tomorrow.  Cleaned up the train room and getting ready to send out the last 2 CPI cars...Chief - heads up!!

Had a quick dinner with the Princess prior to shopping, had a nice talk and she was happy the rest of the night.  It's good to know we can talk and cheer her up.  It's been very trying for her the last few months.  But I'm certain she'll be stronger after this ordeal.

Watching the Polar Express in the train room but it's getting late and I'll have to hit the hay soon.

OK guys, see ya tomorrow, those traveling be safe & Merry Christmas!!

Evenin' All.

The "Cookie Monster" is busy in the kitchen again tonite, one batch of chocolate chippers done, oatmeal scotchies almost done then it is time to bake the sugar cookies. Plan on making up some "cookie platters to go" for our visitors.

The grandson makes his first venture to the snow, Mammoth Mtn., the day after Christmas. Condo reserved and his first ski lesson scheduled. Approve He is really excited, his mom & dad took to it like a duck to water when they weren't much older than he is now. Wish grampa could be a stealthy spectator, would love to watch. When the wife and I used to ski we really enjoyed watching the "Toddler Ski Classes" at Park City. I'll be at the museum on saturday and monday for the Kids Club Fun Runs.

Timer just dinged, back to the kitchen.

For those traveling be safe and if you aren't able to drop into the pot Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year !

Good evening all, I finally found that Farmer John Ham today.  It's about a 12 l/2 lb. butt end.  Looks like plenty for our little crowd.  Did a little shopping with the wife today and also got some Christmas baskets together for late comers at our church pantry.  Picked up a new Orchard Supply calendar yesterday with railroad pictures by Winfield.  I have some of his paintings (prints) and like his work.  He did all the pictures in the calendar.  I cut out a couple for my train room. One is a couple of GG1's in green with 5 stripes at a station in winter time.  The other was some SP SD45T-2 engines on a train along the Truckee river on the East side of the Sierra crossing.  I have a couple of MTH models of those and also ran some real ones during my career so they are special.  Probably get a frame for it.  Better still, maybe I can get a full size print of it from Winfield.  Tomorrow is the last chance for anything I forgot so I better get with it.  Merry Christmas to all,

Ray

Christmas greetings from the Heartlands.  Real lousy weather here that has caused all sorts of problems, it's been raining for 24 hours, hard at times and temps in the mid 30's.  Youngest son and his new bride were supposed to come down tonight from MPLS but those plans have been canceled because of Very Heavy Snow in MN.  Oldest son and family came in a day early as the forecast called for 1/4" ice, yuck.  The worst is yet to come on Friday with near blizzard conditions, we just can't catch a break at all.  Fortunately, the fridges are full and we are ready to cook beginning tomorrow.

So,  gentlemen, that's if from here.  Lots of family time here with our family (NOTHING BETTER) in the next couple of day, we'll certainly miss our youngest son and bride but there is no reason what so ever to even think about traveling in these conditions.  Cherish these times, they cannot be replaced, ever.

Raining and somewhere between 40 and 50 here today.

No Doug, not silly at all.  My dad's train gets a memorial run early in December.

I replaced the O36 curves on my middle loop with O48 curves today.  The Aerotrain is much happier when just creeping along now.  Still have to insert a couple of short straights to correct some potential clearance problems with my inner loop.  I put them on order at my LHS, hopefully will get in next week.

The gifts are wrapped, the car vacuumed and full of petrol.  All that is left to do is to stuff everything in the car, pick the wife up at the end of her work day and hit the road.  Won't be back until after Christmas.

Hoping everybody has a safe and merry Christmas.

Good afternoon all,

It is a cloudy day in SE Indiana with temps in the 30s.  The sun came out for a little bit.  I had the regular fare on the dining car this morning before sending it on to "Points East".  I went to the YMCA to do weights, soccer drills and some treadmill work.  Lucas' best friend stopped by last night to tell us he was engaged.  We watched "The Polar Express" last night and did some errands today.  TBIL, and the sign was correct, "No Grits".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

'James' is a 2-6-0 made by Lionel. There's got to be something somewhere that says how to replace that tire. Or I'll just cut it off and try Jon's trick with rubber cement.  Check this out - look at the L and Union Station in gingerbread - http://chicagotribune.com/gingerbread

SP, will think of you tomorrow when we eat Smaithfield Fried Chicken and Bar-be-que tomorrow at Mom's.  Be nice and the Bar-be-que gennie may "rain" on you before New Years.  Just keep you eyes pealed for the USPS.

OT, tell them the beavers have moved down stream and are happy there and I will not bother them there [even though on my property].

Later.

Ray, cream of rice!!!! Disapprove

Chief, don't knock it until you've tried it.  I have eaten both and honestly, cream of rice does'nt seem that much different to me.  Maybe not as gritty but OK in a pinch.  Will have to go out and buy some new grits just to satisfy my curiosity now.  Whoever mentioned oyster stew is speaking my langauge.  Cold this morning and have postponed my morning walk until it warms up a little.  Might do some last minute shopping today if the spirit moves me but nothing heroic.  Need to pick up a Farmer John ham somewhere.  Regular super market was out yesterday.  Have a good day all,

Chief .... 2 of my grand daughters were here when I was reading your BEAVER posts ... they grabbed my shoulder and said " pappy ... if he hates those beavers and don't want them ... ask him if you can go get them for the stream below your back yard ! " ... Laugh  .... they seem to think they would build a dam and create a swimming hole for them this summer .... i told them you probably really love them and would never give them up ... LOL ....

Pat ... you made me go out and buy a couple pints of oysters .... man I love homeade oyster stew ... since I'm the only one here that loves it .... I get to eat every last drop ! Still never found a REAL home baked fruit cake .... wife and everyone else hates them too .... she refuses to bake me one ..... Angry with the real rum and alcohol and wrapped in cheese cloth .... oh lord the memories ... Dinner  ... it's a dying tradition I guess .... the last person I asked around here said they don't sell those " boat anchors " anymore .... some folks just don't know what's delicious .

Thanks Pat, that recipe is a keeper and I'm glad you enjoyed it.  I'm going to have to find some new recipes to try and recommend  Thumbs Up I believe cooking is just as much fun as toy trains, everyone wins Smile

I hear tell of recipes for Ham Balls, Chili, Oyster Stew of yours. Add the Smoked Turkey and Special Baked Bean recipes and you have the beginnings of a great recipe book! BowDinnerThumbs Up

Pat

Love cooking too.  One thing I love more than cooking, EATING. Laugh

Morning after a big breakfast.  Fried ham, scrambled eggs, hash browns [Yankee food], cheese and toast.  I cooked half, ended up on the phone so wife finished.  Plate was piled.  Wifey called it a "truck stop breakfast".  No more food for me today.

Doug, think that is a great idea of running the funeral train.

Brent, sneak out and buy the JD blower.  Would be the talk of the neighborhood.

Wifey home, BURRR.  Yesterday, had to go into attic and get down Christmas Tree [she finally wanted to put one of the three up].  Then get decorations tubs out from under layout.  That made me into the "dark 30" sucking up leaves in the fenced backyard.  Now I am going to drive to the Triangle Town Center [Big Mall] so she can run into Belks while I sit in vehicle in parking lot.  Then I can go to the ACE and pickup an item they ordered for me. There goes my trip to the gym.  When is New Years?  Back to work and all of that!!!!!! New version of Its Beginning to look a lot like Christmas.  Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas, toys in every store..........and Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again. and I can harldy wait for wifey to go back to work again. WhistlingLaughLaugh

Got to run.  Enjoy!!!

Merry Christmas Eve Eve

It was 42 this AM whenst I arose, now a mere 53.  Up to 66F today (later, MUCH later).

Came home and started getting the LGB’s I sold sorted and packed.  Still have a few left over for the after Christmas e-bay experience.  Then went out and did more Christmas shopping.  The Princess and I will finish with a flurry later tonight.

We’ll be feasting on Turkey and spiral cut Ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, yeast rolls and stuffing.  Pumpkin pie for desert and home made whipped cream!!

It’s good to see everyone back here.    For Bob & Dennis, since youse giz are traveling,

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Be safe in all your travels; bless us all with health, happiness and prosperity.
OK, work beckons, check back later!!

Doug,

Sorry to hear about your loss. We are in the same boat regarding traction tires. Who made the 2-6-0?

Buckeye,

I am with Brent on the snow. You can have the road salt as well.Wink

I have been running the MTH chrome Santa Fe F3 passenger set on the outer loop of the Christmas layout, and it gave me a good scare yesterday. I noticed that it would occasionally come to an abrupt stop while moving as well as refuse to move after sitting.  The culprit was a spun traction tire which it deposited onto the carpet this morning (insert huge sigh of relief).  I have spares, so I'll change it tonight.

Aloha all. Nice Tardis ride last night - good to see Kurt aboard. Wish I could've borrowed this last week to head east. Glad to not be traveling this am. snowing here. I've  been dragooned by my bride into helping our church's Christmas services for the next two days - I have a fancy mike and have to proclaim verses like a prophet - LOL.

Prayers for Buckeye's friend who was in the accident - and of thanksgiving for his g'son and for Chuck being back!

Great chatting if briefly with Sir J, RT and Brutus. Love to see two boots, Bob, in your photo. Love the glow of radio tubes!

Ray, a 80s Buick just drove down our street in the snow as I was typing this and glanced up - was it you? ;)

James just threw a traction tire. I've never had fix one on our 2-6-0. How do you get a new one on? I can't see how to take off the side rods.

I'm running my dad's 248 with black crepe paper like a funeral train - is that silly? Just feels good.

Doug there is nothing wrong with that at all. Very touching if you were to ask me.

Not sure how to change a traction tire either... I think it is different for most engines.
