RAY,

Me and BRO took pictures with a 35 mm camera a few years ago when we fired off the flintlocks at dusk.  You talk about scary site.  Woo flame from pan rises about 18 inches then the sparks coming out of the front of barrel wow.  Neat looking but if anyone would see these pics I bet they'd say, I'm not going to shoot that.  And go figure we won a war with these things?

Keep your powder dry,

Good morning all, attended funeral yesterday for man we knew from our church social group.  One of the largest services I have ever attended.  Fortunately the weather was dry and not too cold for the cemetery part.

We are having a time baby sitting my son's bird while he and his family are away for a few days.  The bird is not happy in his cage and wants to be out with us all the time.  He is watching me now as I work on the computer.  I put him back in the cage when I have to do something.  He raises caine when he wants out of the cage until you finally give in.

Did not run trains yesterday.  Need to get out to the train room today and give them a work out.  I have been reading about the new drop bottom gondola cars by MTH that are out now in several road names.  I need the Southern Pacific naturally.  I saw these cars all the time when I worked there pulling them from El Centro in the Imperial Valley over Beaumont Hill on their way to the sugar plant up the coast from here.  The SP added higher sides to them for hauling sugar beets.

Need to do some more wiring on the layout to get better continuity in all parts of the track loops.  As it is now, when I run conventional I get voltage drops and the trains slow down in these spots

Got a dental appointment at 8:OOAM tomorrow to check out broken lower partial to see about getting it fixed.  One of the little wires that hold it to your other teeth broke off.  I have been using it anyway since before Christmas because I just have'nt had time to fix it.  These things always happen on a holiday or week end.

Laz, et al, those flintlocks sound interesting.  Guess you have to be careful  so as to not get powder burns when firing those things.

Prayers for the sick and repose of the souls departed,

Ray

Laz I was talking about the Phonebooth which seems a disapearing act bigtime

That phonebooth was sitting in that spot for about close to 35 years now. There was an older booth in the back that got crunched awhile back--they took that one out.

I just wonder how many diner type of affairs exist out there----

We live in a rural area and just about every small town has this type diner. So do other states I am familiar with. Jon - Dose Iowa still have local diners?

Jim,

I've always liked the look of the 792. You should get a 799 talking station to go with it. Could you send me your email address in a PM? I'd like your input on an upcoming project, but the only pictures I have right now are ones that the seller emailed to me.

Is anyone familar with using a digital camera to shoot video? I am using a Kodak M341 camera with a San Disk Class 4 SDHC card, but my videos are grainy. Would upgrading to a Class 6 SDHC card help? Here is my latest attempt.

Good Morning--

Got the snowsqualls coming off'n Lake Huron last night and this morning. So far we got 8" of it on the ground with more to come. That wind makes for a very CCCOLD brisk day here! I seen that Highway 401 was closed for a bit just S and W of us. My usual route---highway 21 between Goderich and Amberley back to being closed----mostly due to white out conditions

LAZ: I have a long rifle of undetermined make that I have used a while back. Is there a way of determining who made these? ConfusedPicked this up in an antique store near here some time back and still can't get an ID on this. Works a charm though....

Got some friends coming for supper so I's better be going at the slow stuff---have a good one!Smile,Wink, & Grin

BARRY,

As STUR FISH has said, look for marks along barrel, manufacturers sometimes stamp them like CVA, TC for Thomson Centerfire, and Lyman.  These are pretty much the most widely manufactures today in the gun market.  If it is older it will usually have the manufacturers name etched somewhere or the makers initials.  Also check the inside of the patchbox, and under the barrell on the stock.  Good luck and keep your powder dry.  Watch your topknot.

Aloha. Brisk today (13 degrees right now) but the sun is out - haven't seen it in a few weeks. Spent gift card getting a gigantic photo book of steam engines and Classic Trains mag - great cover of the Wabash.  Replanted the semaphore yesterday and got it wired. Fixed Percy too. Ran trains for a bit. Today going to try to retackle the dishwasher - seems to not be draining correctly, but the discharge tube seems clear, and work on more paperwork to try to get one of two airlines to reimburse me for paying twice for tickets last week.

There's a pizza place in town with a real, working phone booth - still says Illinois Bell on the phone and it has a dial tone.

Good Morning

Cold 20s, no new snow. I can see the grass so not much out there anyway. Is winter over yet, I am tired of it already. All my body parts that still move are aching.

Indoor stuff today will be CTT, PS2 golf and just plain ole TV. Oh yea and a few toy train laps.

Later all....S.J.

Good Morning all

We had a dusting of snow this morning.  Cold and windy but no ice.  I just noticed, my subscription is due.  Ran the Polar Express under the tree last night, and put the 612 station under the tree also.  Looks neat.  May grab some people and populate the area.

I am starting a list of objectives for the next layout, (after the basement is emptied and prepped.  When I get to the point of knowing the space size and limitations, I will be asking for input on the design, but I see that as months from now

Laz – The flintlock are really neat.  A real challenge to keep the power dry in the pan.

Barry - Some of the older guns can be identified by makers marks on the stock or barrel.  Look for small stamped symbols, letters or numbers.

Check back later

May God bless

Jim

88 - Just imagine how hard it would have been for me to construct the Narrows, and the Haystack MTN/Knobley tunnel, if I had sceniced the city first.  Tackle the most daunting jobs first (get them to a state of "good enuff"), then everything else will tumble into place quickly.

...then you can take 9 months to finish the outside edge (1'x6' area) like me...Dunce

Mornin' Fellas

Played with the new Vision Line PRR Operating Stockcar last night. Pretty neat car. Would be even better if I had a corral on the layout because it has 'Loading' and 'Unloading' sequences that don't really pertain to a layout without a corral. Sad

Fife - I keep forgetting that... guess I'll have to work on the mountain, curved stone arch bridge, river valley, and the town side of the valley first. Also need to cut some access holes in a couple places as I've found locating derailed cars difficult under one side of the mountain interior. Hopefully it will make scenicing the oil field/coal tipple area easier as well. Confused

Not much going on around here other than work... Sad

Mornin' boys.  For weather, see Millersburg Yards...

My buddy, Tom, came over to run trains last night.  It was a good diversion.  Brought me a nice Lionel Chessie 2-bay covered hopper (that apparently doesn't like O-31 curvature), a Chessie Safety t-shirt, and a CSX calendar.  During the day, I had finally hooked up the electric to my Am"shack" (Lionel) and Chris's RETRO Manufacturing (K-Line).  It was arbor day too, as I "planted" all the sale trees I've been gathering.

88 - Just remember, finish scenery in the middle of the layout first, then work your way out to the edges.

Hi GUYZ,

23 and very windy here today with 30-40 MPH winds.  Woke me up this AM.  Looks like I won't go out hunting today.  Too windy and numbing cold only to get to 26?  Oh well got tomorrow.

STUR FISH, its a FLINTLOCK.  Little powder in the pan  and a spark from the flint and kaboom!

JON, BEARS WIN!!!  CUTLER finally looks good for DA BEARS!   A little late but wait til next year?

CHIEF, yepper PITT beats UNC!!!!   What you going to shoot with all that AMMO and lead sled?

RT, as kids we use to hang out at the corner store and inside they had a old fashion wooden phone booth with the older handheld ear piece, rotary dial it was a classic, wished I had it today.

Stay frosty GUYZ,

Evening all

Nice evening.  Chilli with fritoes and sharp cheddar cheese, peanut butter sandwich and Sam Adams, finished off with oatmeal cake.  Yum

Cleaned up the garage a bit and got a base coat of white on the crossing gates I'm re-doing.  The drying booth comes in handy when it is cold out.

Laz - Is your blackpower a percussion cap or flintlock?  Is the hole from the flash pan or cap clear?

Jim - I won a 792 Terminal to go with the Union Station when I get the layout rebuilt.  Shouldlook neat but it takes up a pretty good footprint.  Also new on the train front is a 612 station with crane.  I will try and get some pictures later.

Time for bed

Good night and God bless

Jim

Reclinerized for a while after dinner - then had a nice talk with SJ.  We are due for big snow on Wednesday in St. Louis.  I picked up 4 bags of topsoil to use as weight in my pickup.  It's better than sand, because next year I can use it around the house.  Sandbags wear out and then you've got all this sand.

Welcome home Chief - Goodby Chief.

Laz, What do you think of Da Bears so far.  16-0 at half time?  Thumbs Up

It was really cold and windy today, wonder what the wind chill was?

Planning on staying inside most of the day tomorrow as it is to be more of the same.

Well it looks like Chief has fallen in love with the SusieQ Boxcar and Fife's boxcar... says he is leaving early AM tomorrow and not coming back till Thursday and then leaving right away for the lake... guess I'll take pics of JohnF's boxcar (somehow his boxcar got ahead of Fife's) and get it on it's way.

My layout list?

It would make my Honey Do List pale in comparison. Shock

Yep been a while since I've seen one of those still in use

I forget where I recently saw a pay phone with a sign above it that read 'For Display Only'... I was so tempted to put a quarter in it and call The Q's cellphone... 'Hey babe, guess where I'm calling from!?!?' Of course she probably wouldn't answer since she wouldn't recognize the number and if she did answer I would get 'You are such a geek.' in response... Sigh

I FINALLY got a train related project completed!

I received a gift card to Lowes for Christmas and decided I needed a display shelf for the Williams B&O Sharks I purchased a couple years ago and the Williams B&O Heavyweight Columbian Passenger Cars I got RT to part with about the same time. Well it turned out pretty good. Have to get it off the wall and painted now so will post pics soon (most likely of the pre-painted shelf). It is long enough that I was able to get the CSX AC6000 off the layout as well. Hope to build one more just like this one underneath it, that should give me enough room to get the C&O Chessie Special off the layout as well. Then need to build the display rack for above the computer niche. That should give me some room to get some rolling stock off the layout. I think I'll need one or two more long shelves on the opposite wall and I'll have enough room to get all the engines and rolling stock off the layout so I can start rewiring both upper and lower tracks. Then I can continue scenicing the mountain. Really want to get started building the town area... so who knows if that bug bites hard enough I may forgo the mountain and start building the town... just really want to get the curved stone arch bridge built... UGH!!!! I hate when the train bug bites this hard and I have another major project that The Q wants finished (although she did say there is no rush on the sunroom since we have till July to get it done........ guess I could use the cold weather as an excuse till it warms up! Yeah that's the ticket!)

Hi GUYZ,

Well did a nice treadmill 2 miler this morning then laundry.  Then went over to neighbors and gave him a lesson on loading and using his flintlock rifle that his wife bought him for Christmas.  Then went hunting with him on his 200 acre farm just over the mountain.  He missed one at 457 Pm and my gun didn't go off when I saw 3 deer in the corn a minute later.  Oh well still great fun.  Cleaned gun and will go back out tomorrow afternoon.

RT, yepper we still have a few of those cookie cutter resturants up here.

CHIEF, LET IT SNOW,  LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW.  Hope we get blasted on New Years Eve into New years day?  I just love doing the neighbor ladies driveways with my snow blower.

GO BEARS, beat the Vikes.

Home again.  Just long enough to service the 4 Runner [in the cold and wind from the Yanks], get clothes washed and dryed, gather firearms [going to visit retired pilot buddy and shoot] and pack clothes for trip to the "Sandhills" of NC.  Leaving early tomorrow morning.  Returning Thursday in time to repack for the lake house.  Hope to get to running and photoing two traveling box cars that arrived.  Then send them on their way Nawth.  It turned windy and COLD here.  Was tough servicing the 4 Runner and the concrete pad.  Toasty inside now.  RT, sorry for the loss.  Buckeye.  Never mind. Whistling  Yanks [espeically LAZ], let it snow let it snow. Laugh  BTW: School Board Chair called me today.  Been gone back to NJ [from wince he came to NC] for 10 days.  Says he now knows why he moved to NC.  Too much snow.

Later.
