VALLEY VILLAGE -- A Los Angeles City fire engine has been swallowed by a huge sinkhole caused by a new water main break in the San Fernando Valley.

The main break is located near the intersection of Hartsook Street and Bellingham Avenue, east of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and south of Magnolia Boulevard in the Valley Village area.

Water could be seen gushing from the broken main, which was reported around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Engine 60 was on its way to check out the damage and the roadway apparently buckled, sending the truck nose-first into the crater.

Firefighters escaped without injury.

The entire front end of the truck was inside the hole and filled with muddy water.

The water main break is located just a few miles away from another pipe that burst Saturday in Studio City, forcing the closure of the heavily-traveled Coldwater Canyon Avenue.

The cause of the rupture has not yet been released.
