Mornin' boys.  Mornin' Chief.  Here, I'll just lick the corner of my napkin and get that b-b-q under your chin...  Cloudy and 75 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Did get all of my track cleaned yesterday, and actually did turn some wheels.  Found out my new LIONEL scale sized flat car don't like the Narrows portion of my layout.  Also, Mount MOLSON crept a little closer to one of the mainline tracks (culprit - expansion) which snagged my 60 foot boxcars.

Not sure what to do today. 2 Australian navy vessels are leaving the port around 1100, so part of me wants to sail out to the channel to see them off.  Youngest wants to go to the pool.  Boy wants to go to weight training for football at 5.  My buddy, Tom, is coming over at 7 for rail.

Buckeye Riveter

What I did on my vacation.

by Buckeye

I played golf.  I went to my 40th high school reunion.  Visited my mom.  Went to the Rubbermaid Outlet in Wooster, Ohio.  I had lipotripcy for my kidney stones.  I attended my planning commission meeting.  We went to Michigan and shopped at Cabela's and Frankenmuth.  Attended the Train Festival in Owosso, MI.  Drove to Holland, Michigan....my retirement location of choice.  Put up fishing pole rack in garage.

That is about a half of a day's work for me.

It was a good vacation, now back to my full time job of irritating the Chief.

It takes you full time to try.

Jon.....I'm in good hands with the Hawkeyes.

Had a great chat with my Ioway buddy.  Good night all.

Low 80's here.  Went to church this morning.  Had a guest violinist there.  Wonderful addition to the service.

Watched F1 and Brickyard this afternoon, then went to a concert featuring a pianist and the violinist that played at church.  Both of these guys play in Bronson.  Good show, espically when they started improvising on a theme.

Youngest son made it home tonight.  He will be house and critter sitting for us while we go on vacation soon.  Hopefully, he can pick up some work with the State Fair for a couple of weeks.

Bob - I've ridden the cog railway on Mt. Washington.  Interesting locomotives.  The boilers tilt downhill when the locomotive is on level track.  This makes the bolier level on the grades on the mountain.  The turnouts for the cog railway are also interesting.  The cog runs on a rack gear that runs down the middle of the track - like our toy train third rails.  Sections of the rack gear on the turnout are hinged outside of the rails, so when the direction of the turnout is changed, the sections of rack gear are removed and replaced.  As I recall, the record for changing directions on one of these turnouts is something like 28 seconds.  Two men, lots of manual work.  There is also a 'scale'  indicating the magnitude and direction (tension or compression) of the coupling force on the coupler between the locomotive and the coaches.  The brakeman in the coaches watches this very carefully on the way down the mountain.

That's about all for now.

Howdy guys!  Well, had a nice day.  Saw the new Potter movie, which we thought was great.  Bought lunch at the theater though - talk about expensive!  Each of us had a hotdog and soda with a couple boxes of candy to share - yikes!  Trying to get some good together-family time before the hospital stay.  Went to the grocery store then, still as a family, and ended the day by burning some burgers and hotdogs on the grill Chef

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Charlie, Kurt, and Buckeye - thanks for all the pics of the Train Festival. Looked awesome!

Buckeye - regarding your comment on the engineer of the #110 (understand that is the smallest standard gauge Pacific ever built BTW), I had the honor of a cab ride in the #93 and even learned how to fire and our engineer was Lynn, the only woman engineer on the Ely Route.

Chief - my buddy says he could make it rain by leaving the trailer tougue down on his old trailer, so of course it would fill w/ water

RockIsland - that may be a possibility w/ the hops, although I can already see the look on my docs face. I've heard of the Conway RR, but don't know much about it. Was hoping I'd have time to make it up to the Mt. Washington Cog when I was up that way last year, but wasn't able to fit it in.

RT - My buddy had a similar problem w/ a new fan. Had a direct short to the case. They are building these things fast and furious now. Glad it didn't end up any worse for you.

Jim - Score on your recent find! Sounds like you are making lots of progress. The 302 is sitting here in front of me. In better shape than I expected. All the parts are there. The pilot is a little banged up. It is the 4 piece cast metal version. Tender will need a little work, but it's all there. Suprised as to how heavy it is. Almost weighs as much as my 1664.

Endoscopy on Friday was fine, as usual. Will prob hear results of the lab tests early this week. Blood sugar has been fairly consistent, so it is really looking like that is not part of the problem now. I have to say this is all a bit discouraging. Know it could be much worse, but all this just keeps dragging on.  Gastroenterologist wants to do some other X-rays as well. I guess we will keep eliminating things. Just have to keep remembering that famous quote from that one general in the Battle of the Bulge: "Nuts!"

Let me know if you guys find a good coal smoke fluid. When we would get the #93 ready for a weekend run, we would fire her off on Friday and then bank the fire and push her back into the engine house w/ one of the RS diesels. One of us would have to cap the stack w/ half an old garbage can to keep the heat in. I used to volunteer for that one. Was fun to climb to the top of the warm engine and smell the smoke collecting in the rafters.  Actually have the Nevada Northern Railway calendar on the desk. Has a wonderful photo of the #40 on the front. That has kept a smile on my face recently.

Hope everyone had a good weekend

Chief, I can't compete with N.C. Bar-B-Que and Southern fried chicken but I'm going to grill some red snapper fish fillets from the Pacific Ocean on the gas grill tonight.  They are good eating but wife makes me cook them outside to keep fish smell out of the house.  I've been on a chicken and fish sort of diet lately for high triglycerides but the price of seafood here will break you.  I think I'd rather have N.C. Bar-B-Que and die happy.

I finally got the table saw together and cut enough wood to get the first table together. I couldn't imagine doing all this without the table saw. I also ordered some cattle for the 771. The other parts that are needed were in one of my bins.

Way to go Jimbo. Approve

BTW: I knowhow to make it pour down rain.  Fill up my JD pull behind sprayer and start spraying.  About the time I got garden and fruit trees sprayed, started raining very lightly.  So I sprayed the grape vines and by the time I made the shed, I was soaked.  Pouring rain.  Later

Kpolak .... I ve been waiting for coal smelling smoke fluid .... they came out with all those others but not that one .... of course the wife would just LOVE that ..... yea right .... LOL .

JT's Mega-Steam has that flavor...I believe someone's Bride said, and I quote, " There is a fine line between the smell of burning tires, and Mega Steam's Coal Fired Steamer."  I think the smell is pretty close.

The only time my Bride is around the trains is at Christmas, and I mainly run Cranberry Wood, and Banilla on occasion.

Jim,

I didn't get any cattle or controllers with the 771s. The two 771s with the green bases cleaned up great. The 771 with the blue base has surface cancer on the base, but I always wanted to restore a 771 anyway.Smile,Wink, & Grin The 736 car that was in the box is missing three door guides and both doors on the operating side, all wheels, and one link coupler. It does work though. The couplers and wheels I have, but I am not worried about the missing doors. There was also a mint envelope of 693 Track Locks, a 696 track trip, and a 707 track terminal hiding in the bottom of the box.

Mornin' boys.  Rain event here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Just might have to clean the tracks and run some trains...while doing the laundry.

...OR, I could head up to RockIsland's humble abode for the big birthday bash! Pirate  If I catch the ACELA, I could be there by 2.  Wonder if AMTRAK will let me on board with my swimmies...Confused

...OR, watch the NASCAR action from Indy, since that kid in the #5 is on the pole.  Can't believe cheapclassics is leaving home during the most significant race of the year. Disapprove

...OR, could go supervise 88 (Granted- prime rib should be served from the grill...).

Good Morning from beautiful Southern Ohio,

There is only one service today so I got to sleep in till 0730.  Finished breakfast of honey nut cheerios and a few oreos to balance the good effects of the cheerios.

Jim F – I know the feeling of being booked up.  All good books and when people who give them to ask later how did you like it?  .  .  .

Jim T- Great score on the 771.  They are a great accessory.  One is on the layout and I have one for the portable layout.  If the cow “pads” are chewed up replacements are readily available.  It seems that moths are attracted to the original mohair material.  Did it include the 767 cattle car?

Charlie – Neat pictures

Jack – I pray for you and your party.  Hope it goes well with minimal clean up and repair afterwards.

Need to go.  May God bless

Jim

Well, it is supposed to be mid 80s but with rain and thunderstorms today.  New 2000 gallon kiddie pool set up and chemically perfect: check.  Pool ladder assembled: check.  Large canopy tent up, staked, and ready to go: check.  Chairs and tables cleaned and set up in yard and under canopy tent: check.  Coolers clean, loaded, waiting for ice: check.  Patio furniture cleaned and set up with cushions: check.  Propane: check.

I wouldn't much care about the weather EXCEPT I have a 6th birthday party cookout we are throwing for the annointed one today, the first grandchild.  Move the bash indoors you say?  Daughter and wife invited kids, parents, friends, and relatives.  Attendance expected around 60 if everyone shows.  This will morph into an indoor party, and our place simply is too small to host it indoors.

Morning all!

Rich:  Happy Anniversary!

Ran trains last night!  Added the Mega Steam Coal Fired steamer to the stacks...good approximation.  Got hooked on the coal fire smell at train fest, so I needed a fix.  Had some issues with the 0-8-0 getting around the O-31 curves.  It seemed to be losing contact somewhere...The other engines don't seem to do that,  Also ran the docksider.

Getting ready to do sound at Church, then we'll see...a lot of rain in the forcast for the next week or so.

RT.......you know me, just teasing you about the electrician stuff.  I'd haul that sucker out of the garbage, throw it any box as is.   Did you pay for it with a debit or credit card?  You could get proof of purchase through them.  Or see if the store has a record of the purchase.  Short of that, call the manufacturer and see what they will do for you:  "Hole burned right through the motor casing!"  You might be surprised what the store or the manufacturer will do for you, even though it is a pain in the butt to go through it.

I get really angry when products fail, especially dangerously.  I had a similar issue with a 5400 btu window a/c unit I picked up.  It was one of those "near the checkout counter" impulse buys because I saw it was exceptionally priced.  I'm getting older, and the weight of my window a/c units have become a challenge for me to get them out of storage, haul them upstairs, and get hem into the windows without dropping them out and down two stories.  My strategy has been to swap out older, heavier, and less efficient units (one a year) for lighter and more efficient ones.  So much for planning.

What I got was a unit that melted the electrical cord inside the unit to where it exits the case, and the ground fault apparatus on the plug did not even trip!  Like you, I threw out the box and had no receipt.  I was polite but visibly upset with the customer service person at the store.  I've got a wife, grandchildren, and dogs to worry about. The store made me whole on the spot!  It was a pain, but I went home with another unit.

Whatever you decide to do, the only thing that matters is that your wife and you were not hurt.  The stupid fan can be replaced.

Jack it was not my wiring it was the motor itself. It burnt a hole in the metal casing around the motor. The wires you conect to the house wires all look fine. no burn marks or anything.

Thanks for all comments and concerns about itbut the bottom line all is fine now.

At work will talk later

Good evening all,

It is typical Indiana weather today.  Cool and wet and then hot and steamy.  Went to grandson's birthday party today.  Had a nice time.  He enjoyed the soccer goal we got him.  Wife got another new camera.  Hopefully this one will work better for her.  Picked up the rental for the trip Friday night.  "Nothing parties like a rental!"  Will start the southern invasion tomorrow by driving to Knoxville.  Won't miss much of the IRL race.  Ryan Hunter-Reay is starting one behind the Princess at 21st.  (and she thinks she can make it in NASCAR???)  We also did Pizza Hut for supper last night and then came home and mowed the yard.  The Train Fest photos look cool.  Wish I could have made it.  Hope they do it again some time.  I had the regular fare on the dining car.  Beacon is lit for one last drive in the Tardis in case the homing device is being jammed.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Greetings from Taxachusetts,

Wes......the spot you picked out is looking good.  I remember your house pictures when the place was empty.  Your original plan was downstairs, not up.  It looks like you have staked your claim for your train empire before the wifey could claim all the space in the house as her own.....they do stuff like that.

Brent.....the sunroom is really coming along.  You and Susan will enjoy that room for many (York) seasons to come.

Hope Chief and Jon send me some of that sweet corn.  That's probably where a good chunk of ours is coming from this year.  Local crops are not quite cutting it since there was so little sun in June.

Rich.......happy (in advance) anniversary.  Sounds like you will have a very busy couple of weeks.  Just don't lose all of your train and HD money in Las Vegas.

DougM......guess you either found a trustworthy kennel or a housesitter for the pooch.  Congratulations.....one off to college.  You need to rob a bank on your way home to pay for it.

Bob......since your BP and sugar levels (fortunately) are good, I have concluded your problem is a rare hops deficiency.  Drink more beer.  Seriously, I hope you are feeling better and that the Docs get to the bottom of this.

Brutus.....I know I speak for all of us when I say how uplifting it is to hear how well things are falling into place for your wife.  Stay strong.  Prayers continue that the momentum remains with you and your family.

JimT......don't you just hate it when a purchase goes that well?  Nice score on the 322!

Dennis......thank you for pics of your layout in progress.  Rome wasn't built in a day, yet it seems you have been able to keep the trains rolling during the construction.  The smiles on your child's face seems to indicate he is enjoying all of this more than you!

8ntruck......my condolences to you on the loss of your kitty.  Fourteen years.  I'll never forget the look of pain on my wife's face when we had to put down our Siamese at nineteen.  Toi the cat joined us before the birth of our children.

RT.......your ceiling fan escapade reminds me why I hire an electrician.  I'm not the handiest guy unless serving as another's helper.  Glad you dodged a bullet.  Our Casablanca turned 21 this month and soldiers on.

Buckeye, Kurt, and Charlie.......we all envy your good times at Trainfest.  The pictures of the steamers were great.  That was the same 4-8-4 we saw the video of, right?  Had to be.  How many of those are still kicking around, let alone operational.  The closest operating steam engine to me is in North Conway NH at the Conway scenic rail tours, about 2.5 hours North of here.

MikeC.....congratulations on the huge victory in playoff game #1.  Savor every game, play it like it were your last.

Later gang.

Another fabulous day today at Trainfestival.  NKP 765 made the run for PM 1225 today as the PM 1225 blew a flew pipe and was unable to make the run.  Sure was nice to have another Berk step in.  Here are a couple pics.  Video to follow once I get home from the cabin.
