Yikes, going away certainly means there's lots of work to go through when one returns. Yep, it was the original Roma, in Italy. Lots of good food and exploring. But it's nice to be back.

Hey cnw1995, I know Roma. I got lots of them in the garden. [:D] I'm sure it was worth the making up work just to go to the REAL Rome.

Morning gang. Cold front coming through so will cool down to normal July temps tomorrow and not as humid. T'storms ahead of it this PM [probably from Tom]. Got to get grass mowed as soon as it dries. Got to play trains for a little while last night. Have a good one and God bless.

We're finally getting some much needed rain here in Manassas. Yesterday they did a "terrorism" exercise. CIA & some other spooks boarded our train at Alexandria with bomb sniffing dogs.

Train riding ain't what it used to be.

I'll bet they are delicious, Chief! Another beautiful summer day in Chicago, high should be 80, blue skies, no rain - I need some excuses to get into the basement.

Just got home from work, 93F passing through Watkinsville at 1p.m. It's starting to cloud up, possible thunderstorms this p.m.. Too hot to work outdoors so I guess I'll go run trains for a bit this afternoon.

Hi all!

Hot and muggy in lower Alabama! [8D]

I had to buy a new riding mower this week - my 18 yr.old Murray finally went belly-up. I ended up ordering a Snapper with a Honda engine. (Sorry, Chief - I almost went with the John Deere [:D]). Hopefully it will be in before the weekend. We're still getting the afternoon thunderstorms.

No time for trains this month - maybe in the fall . . .

That's great Jerry, I remember when I was about your age, maybe a little younger, I saw JFK. It seams like it was just yesterday. He was on his way thru Cleveland, and his motorcade was going by our school, so everyone from the school went down to see it.

It was 99F in the shade at the house at 4pm today. Right now severe thunderstorms with 70 mph winds are passing less than 20 mi. west of us. There was a tornado NW of here, within 90 mi., that cell will pass closer to Atlanta.

Just looked outside, looks threatening, dark, calm, no wind. Is it the calm before all h*** breaks loose?

Better not run any trains till it clears, I can do without a power spike. Have a good night all.

Wonder if David got bad storms. Saw that they had tornado watch in east VA., DC and Maryland. Got some big clouds to the west of us right now. Got to hit the shower and then eat. Did somemore weedeating at the pond. Hope I am through. Went to the others I manage and they are OK. Just this one wants to go wild around it and the path to it. Now I need to catch some fish in them. [:D]

NEWS FLASH

Today I was at my favorite train store, Davis near Cincinnati and the K-Line rep showed me the new B&O Pacific Set that they are going to be taking orders for in the near future. Also, K-Line has a new fish aquarium car that is so funny with the fish floating in a liquid.

If you are attending the LOTS convention this weekend in Cincinnati (really Covington, KY) a trip to Davis will not be a disappointment.

I attended my favorite train store today too. Borrowed her A/c to cool off after working hard outside. We talked trains and looked over her stock. Think she might order me a John Deere water tower. Carried her a bag full of veggies. Spent about an hour there and then back home to work more in the heat. Now is the time to "go nites". Wife tells the boys [dogs] that and they head to their beds. [:D] Good night and God bless.

Not much rain or storms here. Just enough to make the grass tall enough to mow for the first time in a month and a half. I'm thinking about tearing up the grass and planting cactus.
I'm reading a Civil War book & it says that 95% of the soldiers in the South were farmers (the rest students or from other trades). I often wonder how they coped with the heat and dry spells we're always getting here. Undoubtedly they were not sissies.

David, find out what % in the south are farmers today. Not many. Spent most of yesterday AM with older guys looking at their property near my house. Saw areas of solid rock and falls on creeks. A lot of the area around here is solid rock or rock about 12 inches under the soil. Funny for this part of the state. Cooler today. Off to do electrical work at oldest's new house. Being slow this AM. God bless all.

Hi Chief, Used to have a Lab. great family dogs. I currently have 2 110lb German Shepards. A boy and girl. Hannah and Panzer. They took off after the moose. They got within 10 feet teeth a snarlin, but the moose just looked at them. I called them off and got the 30.30 just in case he came toward the house. One of our friends had several thousand dollars in damage from a moose on the porch that broke 6 large 6'x6' triple pane windows out. I should have turned loose the 15lb Dauschund on him. Those dogs are fearless.......later......Tim

Tim, we have a Chihauhau (sp?) called a deer legged (long legs), that chases the whitetails out of the front yard. There's one, that has her number, that just stands there and occasionally will chase her. Used to have a mutt, looked like a brown short legged Boston Terrier, that kept quiet and would walk among the deer while they ate the corn I put out in the evening.

Well, Burg [lab] is limited to squirrels [catches them on the ground], rabbits and opposums [as we only get an occassional deer over the fence]. Buckeye, I have one of those. Train lady gotr a couple and immediately called me. She fishes too.
Buckeye, I'll let you do a close up. Here is one early on in the life of the Chief Eagles Short Line.

Well not much to do today. All have a good one and God bless all.

Tim,

You just made me smile with your dog stories! When I was growing up we had a Daucshund and she was a great dog, so loving and no fear of anything. When we moved to the country 14 years ago we bought a German Shepherd pup and he was the light of our lives, I never appreciated how much he kept the deer and rabbits in check. We have a wrap around deck on our house and live basically in a forrest of 5 acres, never locked the doors or tied him up and he knew precisely the boundries of our property. Sadly at the age of 13 years his hips were just causing him so much pain I had to have him put down. I sure miss him but now with our kids being gone and us being able to take some long weekends we haven't replaced him. What a privledge it is to have great dog's in your life.

We have a Dauschund: Rudy. He is a long hair and dappled color (brown, black, white). He is the biggest wimp - the cats tease him all the time. He also does not like to exercise too much so he is probably the fattest Dauschund out there. He does bark joyously at the neighbors - sigh. When I take him on a walk with the baby, he ends up riding in the holder beheath the carriage - after he just plops down and refuses to go on (when going around the block) - smart dog. But who greets me happily when I come home? Not the cats nor the kids...

Jonadel, know what you mean about traveling. Mama does not like to board them so one of us now has to be home while the other is traveling [youngest got married and now is not home to baby sit]. Cnw1995, got a friend that has a Dauschund. His name is Slugger. Love to ride with his Daddy in his pickup. Everytime I go to visit with my pickup, he runs out and when I step out, he jumps in, jumps on the console and jumps to the back seat. He sits there until, "I say Slugger, get out." Pets can be more loving and more foregiving than people. Recently a guy was on NPR was saying pets were slaves and captives to people. He wants everyone to stop breeding them and let dogs and cats disappear. He has written a book on it. That is the person I call a "fool" [my wife says the Bible says you do not call anyone a fool, this guy is, foregive me Dr. John.]. At my house, it might be the other way around. [:D]

Last funny dog story.

On our property our German Shepherd was in charge, you wouldn't get out of your car until I came out. But when I took him over to the vet's for his shots he couldn't wait to get back home, he would start shaking with the nerves. I was waiting one time for the doc and this stupid little dog came over and started barking at him (he weighed a lean 102) and I looked at the owner and thought "your dog isn't very smart". I started laughing as our guy just ignored him so when I got into the vet I asked him if little dogs were aware of their own size, he said no and then he started laughing.

Good memories.
