Evening all, took a day off to let the body recover from digging. Gotta start selling this hard construction work is for the birds. No offense Spanky. [:D]

PETim, my buddy, see you have a gorgeous place, but here, in little SoCal, if you have an old house, the mailman comes up and puts it in the slot in the garage, and I can go out in my skivies at night and get the mail. No snow, no climb, no trouble.

Hey Chief, watched the inaugaration today, how far are you from there, cause it looked cold. I wouldn't have waited out there in that weather for anyone. A good SoCal boy would freeze 5 minutes after arriving there. Hope the mrs. is ok after the snow ordeal you folks are having.[:0]

Jimmy D, you folks got some sand there too, just no ocean water. We just had a bunch of squid beach themselves up in LA. Now that is weird. Right up the Duda alley. [:)]

Club meeting in San Diego, just hop on a boxcar to LA, then turn left when you get there. October is best, or now. If you want to see San Diego, watch the Buick open thats on now. A golf course over the ocean. Yes life is rough. [8D]

Anyone for a banana smoothie. ??????

The Buckeye Land Calvary charge was repelled. [:p] Snowhioed hard but the temps stayed at 35. Nice white grass but highways only wet and not slick. Now to dig in for a big fight this weekend. Got 20 gallons of gas in containers, 20 in boat [used some earlier this fall] and 10 in tractor. Ready for generator use [good insurance]. Calling for freezing rain turning to sleet, turning to snow Saturday and Sunday. High 29 Sunday with wind chills in single digits. BURRR Low Sunday night/Monday morning is to be 10. We don't have many 10's. Then warming up. Will probably go to Train Lady's today. Well, all of you that have to W--K [snicker], have a good day. God bless all.

That is an 8.5% grade and that would be considered steep. I know of one place in West By God Virginia that has a grade of 11% near Bexley.

Hmmmm...water freezes at +32F...and when it does, it expands...and when it gets to +10F it REALLY freezes! Even worse if it's windy. Your house does have a basement...right Chiefie? Very, VERY BAD THINGS can happen if you don't...

Be careful - the Snowhio Boyz aren't finished with you yet...!!!

Good Morning,

Don't even want to talk about what the weather man is predicting for later today, it's just plain UGLY but we'll survive just fine.

As some of you know I'm a big Mac computer fan and yesterday I went to a workshop on iMovie as I received a digital movie camera for Christmas. I'm pretty excited about the possibilities I now have to produce DVD's using my own sound tracks, custom movies and utilizing digital photo's and being able to blend that all together. I will even be able to put the camera on a flat car and run it on the layout, how cool will that be? The camera just fits in the palm of my hand and has many advanced functions so that means I'll probably have to read the manual..............

It looks like tomorrow will be a good day to get started if the weather predictions hold true. I'm not sure what I'd do in the winter if I didn't have the train room.

Hello All!

Hate to say it but we are headed towards 70 today. Sunny out.

Jon - you will enjoy the movie making. I use Studio Pinnacle 8 and it is really cool. The downside is a movie project is one of those things that can carry you into the wee hours of the morning a bit too often. Ugh.

Have a great day all!

Got basement. That is where the gas furnace and air handler is. Don't want to put trains down there as too much moisture if big rains come or hurrinces. Have sump pump to pump water out and drin from A/C and humidifier. Stays about 50 degrees during winter.

I'll try it like you suggested, Chief. Thanks for the advice. After pondering it a bit more ast night, I am just going to compress the insulated zones - make them a bit smaller - and now it didn't seem so overwhelming. Now I see it as a challenge I want to overcome!

Tom. thanks for the link again to Warren Trains.

Jon, you'll love iMovie - I can't wait to see your work. I have an old eMac where I've played with it but no digital movie camera.

Wow, Tim - you really have to go 2 miles to get to the mailbox. Supposed to snow more tonight - hope it doesn't too much - have to drive quite a distance for my class tomorrow morn.

I discovered a new formerly-rail-served industry on my commute in this morning - this after taking the same line for nearly 15 years. I was fooled by its current residential use - but as our train slowed a bit in this unexpected spot, I could make out the former warehouse doors at track level - now tastefully bricked up. Interestingly, this building faces an elevated section of track (about 30 ft from street-level) - so it must've had some fair-sized freight elevators within. This year, I've also 'uncovered' two former rail-served dairies on this route - now also residential. It's like archeology!

We have several textile mills and one big flour mill that was a big rail user that are now high $$$$$ apartments [the kind you purchase]. Did an outstanding job of converting them. I think that is neat.

Hey Chief,

Heard the weatherman in N.C., had a major forecast blunder. In today's Washington Post they said some motorists took 8 hours to get home and kids had to sleep overnight in their schools.

I took advantage of the fine snowy weather to run BB rabbit hunting (since tics are not out in this cold).

She scented on a hare across a partially frozen creek, tested the ice, and wisely turned back. BB went upstream, where a log had fallen across the water (she's very persistent when it comes to rabbits as that is what she lives for).

However, the log was too high for her, so she jumped up and her 2 front paws got the edge of the top and she pulled herself up, just like someone doing a pullup.

She then balanced her way across the log, trying not to look down at the water, of course.

Once on the other side she leaped down from the log, landing on the ground with her two front legs in a handstand. She walked a couple of feet on her front legs in a perfect handstand, the most incredible feat of acrobatics I've ever seen her do.

She then resumed her rabbit chasing.

Chief,

That is great. Those are neat little dogs, friendly as heck.

Can you ask your buddy about my hound's tick problems? I just started with Frontline but a week later she got ticks (when warm spell hit earlier in this month). Perhaps it needed more time to take hold.

Ask him if Frontline actually stops tics from attaching.

BB has gotten spoiled rabbit hunting and would be displeased to learn she won't be rabbit hunting in warm weather. She can only take reading Snoopy cartoons so much!

BTW, as we were on our way to rabbit hunting the other day, we passed a house with a Bassett hound. The hound spotted BB and went crazy. Somehow, that hound escaped from the house and joined up with BB. The 2 hounds had a capital swell time. But it was my duty to tell the neighbor that her hound had gotten loose. When she opened the door, both hounds went charging all over her house (incl my BB) and it took a long time before we could round them up, they were so full of adrenaline.

Those hounds can go all day and then some. They don't wimp out like most dogs.

Roy, it a Lionel scale with smoke unit in it. If I remember correctly about $79.00. It is made of new tooling, note the bay window is not full length.

Jon,

BB is the beagle, the basset hound was the neighbor's. Don't know if they naturallyhunt but looked like BB was training him.

Somewhere in this post back in the 70s or 80s, Chief put a picture of BB the famous hound dog

Jon, BB is a beagle. Old picture:

I need BB to help get this pack of beagles going. [;)]

Back from Train Lady's. CAB1 did not trun sound up any [I do not think]. Bunch of "experts" there. They thought it was loud. Told them MTH's would run you out of the room. I did notice that being up on a layout and not on the carpeted floor seem to make it louder. Going to go test now and see if it is louder or the same as they mashed all the buttons on the CAB1 to be sure that the volume was all the way up. I can hear Jim say, "I told you so" and Tom with his chest bowed out. [:D]

Tim, are you and I both the owners of Garden Railroads? I finally figured out why you are digging a trench. [:D] If I had to dig a trench today in my back yard, I would need a jackhammer to get through the frost.

BTW, now that many of you are starting to put your photo with your signiture, do you find it easier to find your posts? It is much easier for me to find my posts and your posts. (Of course when I scroll down across a certain Sutherners photo, the screen goes wierd.)[:0][:D][:)][:)]

Good afternoon, When I checked my weather site ( updated every 10 minutes from a weather station on top of my house back in Michigan ), I saw that it was a balmy -15° F this morning. It got up to a high of 7° F. Good thing I am not there. It is around 70° F here. [:D]

Just watched the evening news, sounds like those of you in the northern tier are abount to get it again, weather wise that is. With Atlanta playing in Philly Sunday they spent more time with that weather report: 4" to 5" snow Sat. night, clearing and cold Sun., 22F at the start of the game, 18F by the end. Glad I can only stay home and watch it on FOX while sipping a bourbon and coke.

Have to stop at the train store on my way home tomorrow, burned out the heating element on my Lionel Hudson. Never did smoke right, I probably hit the boost one too many times. Hope Lewis is there and not at a show, otherwise it'll have to wait till Mon. or Tues., his fill ins don't know his parts filing method.

Just glad I could help.
