Mornin' Fellas.

Patrick - good to see you still around. Your story caught me a quite funny because last year I was 'taking a short cut' home - actually I just didn't feel like going home and needed to drive. Well I'm haulin' it down a back country road at about 80 in a who knows what zone and I see a little black dot up aways, so I slow down. As I approach I see it is a calf in the road. Not wanting to cause any problems I pulled into the nearest driveway and headed up to the house, knock on the door, and no answer. I stuck around a few minutes and a truck pulls in the drive. I stop and ask 'Is that your cow?' Fella starts laughing 'Bet you never thought you would ask anyone that now did ya? Nope not my cow, but I know who's it is, she gets out all the time. Been telling him to put in another row of barbed wire because it doesn't phase her, she gets her nose under the fence and just wiggles her way out.' We head down the road and corralled her back to the field, couple of us lifted the wire while the other two guys wrestled her back into the field... as I drove away I looked in the rear view mirror only to see the calf burrow her way out under the fence... three guys chasing her down the road!

Station arrived last night... now I need to work up the nerve to sit down and build it... from the instructions this appears to be at least a 1 week project...

Hey all not much happening the pills seem to be helping don't feel like a Dizzy nut today.

Hey Patrick I sure miss farm work I use to drive/ride 3 different tractors my boss was a MF lover as he said JD was just over priced tractor painted Green and Yellow and no difference in what we had lol. My favorite for around the farm working was a 261 and I didn't like the 285 mainly because he wouldn't get new tires for it and it would get stuck in a heart beat if you tried to go somewhere a little muddy. I also like the 1105 that was the big tractor I used guy I worked with there finally got the boss to buy a another big tractor but that was just befor I left and I can't think the name to save me right now I do remember it being Orange and sees like it was a 70XX for number it was bigger than the 1105 . We also used 6 wheel straight trucks for hauling grains to market they were trucks the propane company he owned were getting rid of. Take tank off add Dump bed.

As For Nascar not big fan bought all that stuff because of the cheap price, may customize the cars for my use. Time will tell.

Just got wife up lol told her I need to do some running today so thats good.

Will talk to you all later

Working on a new scratch sand house...finally whitled down a plan and elevations.  Now ready for the build!  A bit too cold to be in the garage cutting down wood.  I may need to stop at the hobby shop.

Kurt,
Speaking of scratch building... have you, or any other forum members, built one of these Laser Kits? They recommend painting the parts prior to assembly, which isn't a problem... do you have to sand away the paint at the joints to make the bond stronger?

Also, anyone have any ideas where I can find interior details for a small passenger station? Kit doesn't come with interior details and I would like to detail the interior since this is going to be right on the layout's edge.

Morning all. Cold and sunny - supposed to get a warm spot - 50 on Sat! That would melt everything. Got a busy day - going to try to do taxes - got a big bag full of paper to go through. Gotta prep for a property tax 'challenge' meeting up at the county seat tomorrow - I filed the papers months ago. Probably will be 'declined' ...

Hey, look at Kurt's new handsome mug! He doesn't look like the front of a GG1 anymore.

When we first moved out here 20 years ago, we were surrounded by farms - I loved it. Now they're all subdivisions which I saw coming, but don't love so much. Worked on the engine house a bit last night. Ran some trains too.

I was referred to Chuck Doan:   http://public.fotki.com/ChuckDoan/model_projects/country-store/  This guy's a master...No explanations, but you'll get the idea.

Sorry I can't help with the passenger interior.  You may try a google search, and see what othes are doing.

You are right about the hot, dirty work. When we first moved to the farm in the late 1970's, my wife didn't know how to drive the tractor, so I drove and she stacked the bails  in the wagon. She never complained, bless her. It wasn't long after that she encouraged (insisted) we get the equipment to but up large round bails, a one man operation! And we did. Now I graze the whole farm and buy hay for the winter.

Good Afternoon from sunny but cold Southern Ohio

Got the kids off to school and the house cleaned back up.  Dug out a 761 Semafore project and got it working, but the coil get hot, may ned to do some more checking it out.  Looks like a partial rear down and repaint.

Greg - Thanks for the compliment and you are welcome for the connectors.  Hope they work for you.  I really like your collection!  It is very interesting to see the pre war Flyer!  I liked your statement as to being "stewards" of the toys, to use until the next person gets them.

Kurt - Nice picture

Patrick - I can identify with your hike.  When I worked on a farm it seemed like the critters wanted to wander when it was the coldest, when they had a shed and food and water right where they were.  Nice thing about the cuts from briars and fixing fence in the cold is they don't hurt till you warm up.

Buckeye - hope the bride feels better soon!  Chicken broth for supper?

Dennis - How is the ribs

Chuck - you OK in this cold weather?

I am going to do some work to do and some reading before taking a nap for nightshift tonight

May God bless

I didn't know so many Coffee Pot people did farm work, and some still miss it. I'll bet I can line up some for all of you Laugh.

Chief - Feeding cows peanuts and molasses, truly a southern feed for southern cows!

Lionroar - Great story! Nice of you to stop and help. I'll bet you felt much better when you got home.

RT - I don't have experience with MF. I got a Ford 7600, a JD-B, and a Chase (forgot the model) along with the farm. Still use the Ford for everything, sold the others. Wish I still had the JD-B, it's a collectible now.

Doug - It was in one of those subdivisions my cows decided to visit.

Sturgeon-Phish - It was cold that night, but tromping around in the woods with a heavy coat on warmed me up, a little to much. As for the brier cuts, I shaved very carefully the next morning!

Good Afternoon from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny, but cold day. 17 degrees.  Right knee is hurting from the cold. Suppose to warm up this weekend.

Today is busy. Chores around the house. Wife went grocery shopping. She'll be home in awhile. Then to put all the stuff away. Then a nap.

Dining car was here for the usual breakfast.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

It's the Eagle Scout in me... Actually after stopping and helping, and the good chuckle afterwards I couldn't remember why I was in the mood for a drive, and the drive home was a bit 'slower' if you catch my drift. I think Susie-Q and I took a drive later that day too.

Still get a chuckle about this when I drive by that farm.

Jim, ribs are getting better.  Mostly just sore now, but at least I don't see stars when I cough or sneeze, or breathe.

Regarding the seat, I grew up with two sisters (older), so I learned at a young age....it stays down.  And yes, I have come to detest those seat covers that make the seat into some kind of torcher device.  I also grew up with a father who instilled a bit of sarchasm in me.  I will make sure I put the seat down, but I have reminded the females of the house that when we include the dog, there are more males in the house and that majority should rule, but we will be nice and give them that one.....just a little something to let them know.

Rich, I hope that your friend continues to improve, but as mentioned, may be  a long road to tote for him.

Patrick, lots of farms around, so I am used to seeing the herd break out.  Gotta be carefull.  We had a elderly couple who were travelling along.  Hit a cow, she came through the windshield and killed them both.  As to farm work, I did a bit of bailing hay and feeding the animals.  Had a nasty war with some wasps in the barn, and I lost.  I also have a friend in NY state with a milk farm.  So I have seen or been a part of different kinds of operations (pardon the pun), but have gained much from them.  Plan is for our kids to spend some time on both farms and a ranch a friend has in Texas.  I want them to learn the type of things a computer isn't going to teach them and to know what a hard day's work is all about.  Good lessons.

I have a project to work on.  One of the guys I work with had a Polar Express tender get broken by his son.  The coupler plunger/pin assembly is broken.  I need to order the part, but not sure what number. Also, would you get just the plunger assembly, or the whole truck with power pickup?

Lionroar - 10-4 on the Eagle Scout. We need more of them (you)!

kpolak - I never did figure out why the cows went on strike right after we went to round bails?

Some cows are compact as a brick wall. I have never won a war with wasps or bees. Great idea to have the kids spend time on farms and ranches. Most won't have internet hook ups, but to be safe, leave the laptops at home.Wink

Jon: In the car/tractor picture, did you notice the gals before the tractor are sitting down, and the gals behind are standing up? Must be a chick magnet.

Woke up this morning to find it was warmer in Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Hyannis, and Cape Cod than in some parts in Florida.  Backwards.  Sorry about that Mel, Rich, and Lee.  You guys should move North for the Winters.

Fife......thank you for your gracious offer to help out with my excess beer inventory.  Laz is in too.  Just as long as you guys promise to put the toilet seat down when you are through.  Saw a commercial for Heineken last night.  "What a man chooses to drink is his destiny."  Another great reason to drink beer.  It's tied into my destiny.  Don't think the wife will find any validity or humor in that, though.

SirJames....I see what you mean by Kurt's picture.  He still has hair, and hair with color, but I'm sure his little ones will cure him of that in due time.  What jokes?  I don't pee on myself either.  Must be a North Carolina custom.  Think Chief will catch that?

Chuck....my knee still talks to me when the weather changes.  And swells when my activity gets too vigorous.

Wes.....my wife has been bugging me for 20 years to add a second floor walk in closet over a two car attached garage that abuts our master bedroom.  All I think would happen with that is that she'd just buy more clothes and continue to hang on to the stuff she hasn't worn over that same twenty year period.  No benefit in it for me, that's for sure.......UNLESS I parcelled off some of it for a second floor layout.  How is YOUR knee coming along?

JimSP.....the grandchild wears me out too.  When I am in charge, I subconsciosly worry.  More so than with my own kids.  Don't want anything to go South on my watch; but I don't want to be a stick in the mud either, whatever that means.  When she leaves, our place looks like a bomb went off.

Rich.....continued prayers for your LTS partner in crime.  Dennis' explanation was most helpful, in plain English to boot.  Thanks Dennis.

Patrick.....I've got some great photos of me and my granddaughter on a JD 8120 at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, taken over the holidays.  They have a farm section at the Zoo which has more than farm animals.  Familiar with that JD unit?  I think the placard said something about it being the most powerful JD ever built.  You should use your tracking skills to find folks' dogs when they come up missing.  Seriously, between mere accidents, sheer stupidity, ignorance, and purposeful breaking of the leash laws, there is a market for that up my way.  Along with tatooing and microchipping dogs.  GPS may be next.

GregM......go get 'em!

Brent.....after reading about your herding escapade, I have visions of you replacing Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates in a reprise of Rawhide.  SuzieQ could play Miss Kitty.  Ooooops!  Wrong 60s cowboy series.

DougM....don't be too pessimistic about that real estate tax appeal.  My FIL lives in Kane County just South of you in Elgin and learned that the guy directly across the street from him was paying $1000 less in property taxes (both retired with the seniors' reduction), exact same house, built at the exact same time, by the same builder, with the exact same amenities, on the same lot size.  There are more shenanigans or outright assessment mistakes going on down at the assessors' office than you may think.  They didn't ignore my FIL's appeal, he didn't have to appear after filing the appeal, they simply dropped his taxes so he would shut up and go away.  The operative question is why. Whistling

Later, gang.

Good morning guys,

Posting from the office on a new computer that I just set up for a new office.  The monitor is a 24" Samsung, very nice.  It's very cold today, but nice an clear.  Washed the truck for the second time this week and it got dirty just driving here.  Lots of salt on the roads so any wet spot splashes it up.  No trains yet today.

DBaker, is the "artist" the same one that came up with the "red rock canyon"?  That looks like an abortion to me.  You should let your voice be heard down there.  If they are going to have a 60 foot siding, they may as well have double track.

Bracing for winter weather, rain predicted for week end.  Oh my! Temp. might drop to the 60's.  Brrrrr!  Tough weather but we can handle it.

Your granddaughter will remember that zoo trip for years to come. I am not sure, but the JD 8120 has to be one of the most powerful JD built. Here in the country, we find that city people drive out and turn there dogs (and cats) out to fend for them selves. I can't understand it. We take them to the local dog pound. Unfortunately, most are put down, but we can't keep them all here. We did keep a pregnant cat once, and within two years we had 30+ cats (still do). Three are pets, the rest are wild barn cats. On the positive side, no more rats in the out buildings!

Evenin' boys.  Evenin' English.  Just plain cold.  Will spend the next 12 hours thawing out.  S'posed to get warmer this weekend.

sirjames - Keep those emails comin', please. Smile

Buckeye - Best regards to Luvie.

Speaking of porcelain, dbaker - we took a lid vote in Fifedom, with results as follows:

                Down ---> 4

                     Up -----> 2 Sign - Dots

Chief - Merryland would welcome your Lady Liberty proposal...need to fill the void of the taxpayers that are fleeing the state in droves.

kpolak - Shock

cnw1995 - It wuzzz a nice GG1...

88 - Whoa, didn't know it came unpainted.  Maybe spread things out and post a pic.  If you want to detail the interior, don't adhere either the roof or foundation.  There was actually a table of stuff at YORK with tons of Plasticville interior pieces.  A thin bead of wood glue should still secure your pieces.

RockIsland - I believe laz & his 800 lb bear would concur, gratis beverages are all good...

Ole Timer - I gotta know, what "hills" are you lookin' at...?

rt - Sounds like a touch of vertigo.  If you could jump in a pool, you could find out toot-sweet.

Hello ya'll,

Patrick......exactly.  The rescue from which we got our previous two dogs is a "no-kill" shelter and is loaded with strays.  Folks go out and get pets with the same sense of responsibility and committment as they would have buying a pair of sox.  My father used to say that you can measure the humanity of a society by merely looking at how it treats the less fortunate, including its pets.  And these same people that cast off their dogs in such a cruel and cowardly way are too embarrassed by their actions to simply drop them off at a shelter!

Ole Timer.....16 degrees is sounding balmy from my perspective.  3 degrees forecast for overnight in my neck of Taxachusetts.  My furnace just keeps running.

John/jef.......our cars are looking fairly putrid here too.  Getting them washed would be an exercise in futility.  As soon as the ice and snow starts to melt, the roads with salt dried on them just starts the process all over again.

RaySP....time to break out the mink-lined golf shirts.  This weather must be horrible for you CA boys.  Must be tough.....jump in the swimming pool to stay warm!

Fife......besides you and Laz, no one else has stepped forward to help us out with the excess beer.  Guess we'll have to suck it up and overachieve on this project.

Later, guyz.

Afternoon/Evenin' All.

Jon, The abomination of that tractor. A Ford doghouse on a Case tractor, for shame !!! Laugh

Brent, These people have a few interior pieces and a lot of exterior stuff  http://www.finishedmodels.com/oscalefinisheddetails.aspx plus there is some interior detailing on E-Bay. But must agree that York will be the best bet.

Sir J, Thumbs Up

P.S. Almost forgot, can't wait to see what SMR is going to do in the B&O livery. Not that I can afford to buy it but it don't cost anything to window shop.

Ray, - You guessed it !  If you recall when you enter the building, there are the "city" buildings with the Fire Station, Mels Diner, McDonalds, etc..  The 2 mainlines go through and in between the mainlines is a siding that goes off toward the back of the layout, then turns right and goes around and across the Wood Trestle bridge.  At which the siding has acquired a 16" height.  The siding then runs along the back wall, above the Red Canyon, the length of the peninisula, then cross all the mainlines again, and runs into the staging area.  (New hole in wall, OK), and turns back on it self, and comes back out.  The problem as I see it are many, most significant is when the train comes back out and goes all the way around it is dropped on the mainline line in the opposite direction, and the first opportunity to clear the mainline is adjacent to where the bathroom is.  Many many alternatives available, but it is a significant uphill battle!  I am going to modify a layout drawing and distribute to members, and suggest some alternatives.  That will really PO a couple of people!!!!  But, it needs to be done.

All the rest of you guys:  Our weather front has moved in !  And, the forecasters were wrong, as expected.  We are having Severe Sprinkles!  I've seen 4 cars with the intermediate windshield wipers on.  May need to be declared a Federal Disaster Zone !  We need the money.  (Tomorrow is first of the 2 day a month furlong for state employees.    DMV closed, who knows what else, approx. 238,000 employees.)

Edit: Oh yeah, Ray I will be doing a presentation in Glendora soon for the Glendora Seniors Computer Club, if your available will buy you lunch.  Will let you know of the date.

Buckeye   If your door question was for me, I am going to knock on it again today. Hope Mrs Buckeye recovers quickly.  Is the situation you mentioned immediate family?

Greg...If you don't knock the door doesn't open.  Mrs. Buckeye is going to be a sick lady for another twelve or so hours.  I have been there.  She just wants to do everything that I do! Smile   I lost my best fishing buddy in 2001 and now am in the process of saying good-bye to a great friend of 23 years.  He will be gone by this time next year based upon the reports.  I will miss him.
