Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 40s (finally a good weather day!)  Rich, thanks for fixing the Tardis.  I don't suppose anybody remembers me saying some time ago it kind of pulled to the left???  No wonder it was doing so.  I heard that Spock fellow was pretty smart, but kind of unemotional, sort of.  Beacon is lit for tonight and it will be interesting to see how it handles. Brutus, good to hear some good news.  Did the YMCA routine, looked at taxes.  Had a good day at work.  Surprised myself at how much I got done.  Did some Second Life.  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car for breakfast and sent it on to "Points East" fully stocked.  There is an extra section today bound for North Carolina and Georgia so that the Chief and Dweimer can get some good breakfasts for once :-)  (No Grits)  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Just a quick stop in to say hi...

Jack has pink eye today, so I need to get him to the doctor for some meds.

We found the perfect house last night, and put an offer on it.  2 other people looked at the same house, so lets home that they accept our offer.  This house is 10-15 minutes from work (Im 45 minutes from work now), and is everything that we are looking for.  There is even a finished basement with a big train room!

Already looking forward to York in the fall...

Fife--

The best 9 years of my entire life was when I owned a sailboat.  Period.  I'll try and elaborate later if you are interested, I've been busier than a one armed paper hanger and I'm on my way out the door in 5 minutes, again.  The next time I retire..................

Wes Good luck with the house.  Hope Jack's feelin' better soon.

jonadel - Ioway is kinda land-locked...where did you have a sailboat, and what kind?

Some of our "mid-life" crisis' involve buying a Harley, or a Corvette, or a 24-year-old named Heather...  Mine involves either a 33' Ericson or 34' Hunter...

Morning.  Off to Dr..  Bet I get spots carved away.  Glad I looked a calendar.  No harrassing phone calls I usually get from some machine reminding me.  Thought that was a hoot.  Sunny and warmer.  Got down into the 20's last night.  That was cold as had not been around such temps for a few days.  Actually one guy reported snow flurries yesterday afternoon in Roseyville.  A lot warmer today.  The "special" breakfast was blocked at the MD line by the grits patrol. Whistling  Have a good one.

Morning!

Nice chat with Brutus yesterday afternoon!  Thanks for calling.

Jim:  Saurkraut on pizza?  That's a new one...Bride limits my preparation of saurkraut to once a month maximum.  If you like saurkraut, you might try cabbage KimChee.  A Korean dish of spicy hot, soured, pickeled cabbage, to name one type.  There are many types of KimChee appetizers, from potato salad to seaweed.

Worked on Sand house this am.  Plan to take the girls out to see some dinosaurs this afternoon at the natural history museum...Hope to get them napping early, as they woke at 5:00am.

Pretty quiet day.

Good Mornin, Ya'll,

After an incessant period of below normal temps and snowfall after snowfall, we continue to be spared of both.  Despite the warmer temps, there's still significant snow cover on the northern exposure of the homestead.  Unfortunately for me, the snow melt has put me in the dog house with the wife.  Dog piles exposed in the snow that the wife had ordered picked up weeks ago.  Should have gone out and spray painted them white before she noticed them.  Better yet, should have put white food coloring #14 in the dog's food.

danrunner.....ah, yes, the Christmas tree light controversey, colored versus white.  I know that one well.  About 15 years ago the better half decided our sizeable investment in colored Christmas lights was not cutting it for her artistic tastes.  So those got "stored" while she went about reloading with the white ones.  Inside on the tree, on the staircase garland, and on the fireplace mantel garland.  White spotlight to illuminate wreath on front door.  White lights on all of the outdoor trees.  And white candles with brass bases in all of the windows.  As with most things that fit into the category of Christmas decorations, we have enough to trim 3 homes.  And the end is never in sight.  This past year I pulled out everything Christmas and left it in the hall and all over the living and dining rooms.  Wife displeased with the mess, then began the classic "Oh, look, the (fill in the blank) from our first (fill in the blank).  I thought that would finally trigger a realization in her that we don't need any more Christmas "stuff."  Wrong! Banged Head

Chief.....hope your cough has cleared up and that they don't carve you up to badly at the Doc's.  Your appearance couldn't stand another hit.  Laugh

Brent.....I've taken my wife on getaways where we had nothing to do (planned) and all the time in the world to do it.  Door County Wisconsin, Napa Valley, and Barbados.  Sometimes "nothing" is "everything."  I'd like to hook up with some of our dispersed friends at the vintage car races next September in Watkins Glen New York.  The finger lakes region is beautiful.  And the biggest decisions have to do with eating, drinking, and catching up with old friends while drooling over all of that old iron.  Rich and Dennis posted on old hemi and 440 Challengers.  Watkins Glen has everything vintage automotive!  In addition to seeing the cars up close and personal, you get to see all of them circle the original road course and down Main Street, then see them out there in their glory on the current road course with many losing common sense and actually duking it out. fender to fender.

DougM.....wish the rest of the guys on the Forum could get to Chicago to see everything the city has to offer.  Brutus is planning a family trip this Summer.  The rail museum out your way, the lakefront, and all of the other great museums.  Wife tuned in Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" on TV last night to watch an hour long program on Chicago's exceptional dining opportunities.  Dinner  The Silver Palm, an old converted train car.  Also saw the Calumet Fishery, Burt's Place (pizza) in Morton Grove, Fat Johnnies on the South side.  My favorite was Hot Doug's for hot dogs which Bourdain said was on someones' top 50 restaurants anywhere, regardless of cuisine or price (lines out the door).  If you are into hot dogs, take the younger to Super Dawg at the corners of Milwaukee and Devon on the city's Northwest side.  It's the old drive in style place where they take your order from your parking spot in the lot and the waitresses in the Summer deliver your faire, hook the platter of food to your car window.  At least that's what they used to do.  About 40 minutes from your place.

Rich.....continued prayers for Dave's recovery.  And Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up for your helping his business out while he is in his hour of need.  Years from now you will have long forgotten 2009 bike week at daytona, but he will remember what you did for him when he needed it most.  Your kids are taking notes too.

Brutus.....seems like your household can't catch a break.  Prayers for your daughter that she's back in action shortly.  Congratulations on more "UNCLEHOOD."  Sounds like a train is in someones future next Christmas.  Thanks for letting Sir James drive the Tardis.  That guy sure can drive smooth, must have been a race car driver in a former life.  Plus his expertise learned from years of dodging bullets around Detroit sure came in handy passing over Roseyville and Chief's last night.  Tardis bomb site was working to perfection.  Wonder how he's going to get the beer cans out of his gutters.i  Big Smile

Don.....I'm with you about someone taking pot shots at someone's layout pictures and video by giving the guy's thread a low star ranking.  Malcontents wishing they could do the same in their living room, pure jealousy.  Say a prayer for folks like that.  They need it.

Wes.....us Jacks have to stick together.  Hope his pink eye gets straightened out and you don't catch it.  Jack needs another train gift to comfort him! Smile,Wink, & Grin  Prayers that the house hunting bears all the fruit you can handle.  A basement for the trains.  What more could you ask for?

Patrick....when you go to liberate your pink flamingos from Fife, remember to do it in stealth mode.  He's packing. Smile

Fife.....re another sailboat in your future, bet there are a lot of nice ones that came up for sale recently due to the current state of affairs.  Are you seriously looking?

Later, gang.

DougM.....having had decades of experience with clogged toilets, I have semi-retired the plunger and use an old 5 foot length of gardern hose with the brass cut off to snake and clear obstructions.  Has worked every time, so far.  Doesn't scratch the porcelain  Childrens' small toys may be problematic.  Had one of those clogs in the main sewer pipe in the basement a few months back.  Plumber was more expensive than my orthopedic surgeon.

RI, one of the joys of christmas is driving around looking at the Color lite displays, the white lites just don't do it for me. Too many houses decorated with white. kind of bland. Who started this white lite thing anyway.

I'm with you, SJ, especially outdoors.  A couple of the folks in my neck of the woods with houses from the 1670s light the white candle lamps year round at night in their windows to showcase their vintage homes.

Took the 5 year old grandduaghter out looking at the lights in Lincolnwood Illinois this past Christmas where one decorated house is more stunning than the next....to me.  But the ones with the colored lights are the ones that grab the little one's attention.  DougM.....worth the 45 minute drive for you and yours next Christmastime.  You can dine at Super Dawg while you are at it, about 5 minutes due West of Lincolnwood.  Lou Malnatis deep dish pizza at in Lincolnwood at Lincoln and Crawford Anenues 2 minutes away if dogs are not your cuisine of choice.  They've got beer at Malnatis.

Mornin Boyz & Girlz.

A tad frosty this morning but it looks as if the weather is going to be really nice the rest of the week. Got some rain & wind as well as a good bit of snow in the local mountains, the worst of the storm went north of us up Don's way.

Fife, I took the better half sailing once, when we lived in Grand Lake, Colorado. It was fun til a surprise storm blew in over the mountains, to this day she swears I was trying to do her in. Shock

What's with these politicians and free meals, is this a new entitlement program that we the taxpayer should be looking into ? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Wes, Best of luck on the new digs !!!!!!!

Kurt, Kim-chee, there was a Korean guy that worked for me and would bring it for lunch. Talk about emptying a cafeteria really quick. Swear it would peel paint off the walls. When I was real young our family made our own sauerkraut and aged(?) it in the crocks in the pump house, ever since then I have not cared for it. Ashamed

RockIsland/kpolak - I developed this "thing" last summer, and I can't seem to shake it.  Had such a great time on Lake Champlain.  I am signing up for sailing classes (trying to bring the boy along too) this spring, and Jack, it certainly is a buyer's market.  Fifey's-wifey (whom absolutely loves the water and traveling) actually is "on board" with the idea.  Gonna have to give up some to get some in my future plans, so I absolutely need to weigh everything.

 Hello All:

That snow reported in Roseyville probably was soot from the town incinerator where they burned the "I Love OHIO" car.

Jack - Thanks on the tip about fife. I'll wait until he leaves for the York show and sneak in and retrieve my flamingos.

Brutus - Ad my Congrats on becoming an uncle. You do know that you uncles have the same rights as us grandparents when it comes to spoiling children.

fife - When we had the summer cottage we had a small sailing catamaran (sp?). Not quite what it sound like you are after, but I loved it. Had a speed boat to, but nothing was greater than sailing around the lake, no sounds except the slapping of the water on the sides, birds, wind whistling in the trees, dragonflies flitting around you. None of that happens in a speed boat.

Doing away with the stars has my vote.

Chief - I saw a news item from Fair View NC. Is it true that Fair View is on the side of a mountain, at the top of the mountain is a town called Great View, and at the bottom of the mountain is a town called Cain't See Nuttin ?

See all on the Tardis. Maybe if Chief wore a Northern Flamingo costume and stood on the VA-MD border the Tardis would pick him up. Or maybe it would be the MD Police that would do the picking up!

All the talk about Hot Dogs and Pizza - I have to go fix one or the other for lunch.

Fife--

Just back from the dentist (4 times a year, I hate it but I get to keep my teeth healthy), treated myself to Cracker Barrel for a wonderful breakfast----I was by far the youngest one in there at 9:00 AM, Geeze Louise.  Stopped and got groceries for the week plus new scrips for the boss.  We are set.

Sail boat history.  Yes, we are landlocked but there are three big lakes in northern Iowa that are drop dead gorgeous plus now we have 3 huge reservoirs built for flood control by the Army Corps of engineers.  My Dad retired in 1970 and bought a beautiful property on Okoboji, one of three naturally blue lakes in the world, spring fed. Seven miles long and the narrowest part is 3/4 mile wide, lots of large bays and the center part of the lake is huge and deep.  Great for sailing, fishing, water skiing and SCUBA diving, I did all three and LOVED every minute.  In those days you could afford a house on the lake, their $31,000.00 home in '70 would be worth at least $900,000.00 today as it's on the lake.  Now when a home is sold it's typically bulldozed and MacMansions are built.  After he passed Mom sold it and lived comfortably in town.

In the spring of '70 I bought my first 14' Hobie Cat and raced it at Clear Lake, IA and in August I would trail it to Okoboji and then store it there after the season was over.  I was single, the Hobie 14 was perfect, married in '72 and in '73 we bought a Hobie 16 and raced all over the midwest with it.  That was a FAST boat, flying a hull with my wife suspended over the hull in a trapeeze harness passing power boats was always a hoot.  We raced nearly every weekend.  Oldest son born in '75 and we moved to central Iowa in '76, we had the boat down here and at Okoboji but like all good things, when you have children your life changes.  Throw in another son in '79, one income/one wife/two kids=no money. Sold the boat, needed the money.  It's often been said that the two happiest days of owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it, I don't believe it.  We've missed that boat big time.  We went on test drive on a 28' mono hull a few years ago on a very windy day, the salesman wasn't that good so I piloted the boat, it was white capping and I heeled that boat way over---think I scared him,  It's nearly impossible to flip a cruiser, they always point to wind when they reach a certain point.

My wife hates my motorcycle but she loves it when our youngest son takes a week every year and tours with me out west.  She's also very proud that I ride with the Patriot Guard on the bike.  I'll bet I could go to a marina tomorrow and make an offer on an expensive sailboat and she would approve, that's how much she loved it.  I would want at least a 32' that I could tow, small sleeping cabin and a portable head.  Ideally, if you could rent a slip and keep it there, that would be the way to go.

Two years ago Ryan and I were on the bikes in northern WI and saw the slips where folks keep their fairly large sail boats, they sail out to the Apostle Islands for the day on Lake Superior.  To me, that would be a perfect weekend.

Oh the memories, I would love to rewind to '70-'75 and relive those summers.  I guess I missed my midlife crisis, too busy.

Good Afternoon,

Before I knew it it was after 12:30pm today. Got busy trying to see why the hot water heater quit working yesterday and got around to doing quite a few other things, cut the grass(mainly weeds) this morning. Had to put battery charger on riding mower's batttery as it wouldn't crank-up this morning, used push mower for about 20 minutes. Fired up the generator to make sure it will start when we need it, for times without electricity. Almost time for a new riding mower, battery going low and tire going flat, $50.00 or better to fix each item.

Went to Circuit City, the store that is going out of business and their prices are still tooo high for me!! Bought a new DVD recorder at Best Buy as the price was $61.00 less than Circuit City.

Getting over the cold I got last week, had it for over nine days now.

Supposed to be chilly again on friday or saturday, and anjdevil2 will be colder than me because he lives closer to the Georgia state line.

Howdy guys (cough cough).  Well, I'm feeling sick, but would have gone to work; but, my daughter is sick so we're watching The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery - pretty fun little movie!  Not much train in it though.  Email chatted with Sir James this morning.  Had a lot of fun last night and I take back everything I ever said about Sir James' driving, it must have been the doohickey that Rich fixed Laugh

Good luck on the house, Wes!  Prayers for us all, esp the star-scoundrel.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Still haven't heard from the plumber.  Angry Hope you're feeling better Brutus. Jack, I augered and everything - after two hours, admitted defeat.  Ole Timer, I have considered a ice-breaker car - then put it on the back-burner. Now I'll be thinking about it again. By the way, Jack, I have a Lou Malnati's about 3 minutes away from the house - very dangerous. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at the orignal Lou Malnati's - my mother-in-law was appalled. I was happy... nothing finer to begin a marriage than with beer and pizza.    I would love to take sailing lessons - when the kids are older - on our Crystal Lake. Prepping for class tonight.
