Glad your feeling better Doug. Knock on wood, we have managed to avoid thr "F" word this year. The snow has started the bride has left. The trains are running and house has the smell of "wood" smoke fluid. Its going to be a good weekend. I think it's time to go build a mountain.

Had some bad weather to the north of me(about 45 miles) yesterday afternoon around 3pm, Stuart FL got a report of a tornado, it tore up the airport in Stuart, damaged about 14 airplanes & ruined two others, and ripped the roof & sides off a building at the airport. The area has had some heavy rain lately and some tropical storms coming in from the Bahama's & Cuba area.

Needless to say my pond is full again or near flooding stage, it only floods my lawn and drainage canal to the east of me and no property damage when this happens.  Hopefully Lake Okeechobee will come up some with all this rain and we can get out of drought status.

Good Morning,

A coffee sounds good this morning, 22 degrees and cloudy. Dire storm is now forecast to stay south of here, with us getting a little bit.Yea right, we will wait and see.

G.sons have 1/2 day of school so my wife will be going to their house until after 3. If no snow we will eat out tonite. Can't decide, coney island(they do have other food) or a real resturant. Those with rain, good luck. I buy a new sump pump every 5 or 6 years just in case. When it rains sump cycles constantly. Enjoy your friday and stay safe,,,,,S.J.

Lee,

Original equipment rotors just ain't what they used to be, they are thin relative to those of yesteryear.  After what you describe with the after market ones, they are probably about the same. There is little or no margin for error today on brake pad replacement, wait a bit too long and you wind replacing both pads and rotors.

Whatever happened to a brake job where rotors could be machined and reinstalled, not replaced?  On one of the Infinity models, customers were experiencing worn out brake pads and the resulting damaged rotors within 14,000 miles, some as soon as 7000.

Infinity actually wound up providing a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on pads and rotors for that model and existing customers!  They also provided refunds to customers who already paid the freight on the premature weardown repairs.  The pads were great for improving stopping distances but plain wore out quickly.  At least they stood behind their product.

When in doubt, swap them pads out or it could get expensive.

Jack

Jack,

I just had to replace the rotors as they were out of round and causing highway speed vibration. Brake pads were good, unusual but true.

Reason to replace brake rotors verses turning on a brake lathe is cost, just as much to turn the rotors as to replace the rotors.

Ford Motor Company around 1995 or so had a problem with brake rotors on buses, the school district I drove for had to turn their rotors with only 4000 miles on the bus, they couldn't wait for Ford to send replacement rotors(send one in get one back) as they needed the seven Ford buses in service.

Morning  Well it should be snowing soon. The weather guys are saying 12 + " Looks like it gona be a good one.  Ran the new B&O S-2 lastnight. Nice little switcher, it made it through the yard no problem. Although a little problem came up, the smoke unit is pulsing now. Its not a constant stream of smoke like the first time it was on the track. Its a on off on off cycle with about a one second interval's.

For those of us not geologically inclined, rising ground water levels become as much of a basement flooding factor for a lot of folks as the more obvious above ground sources such as saturated soil and peaking rivers, streams, creeks, and ponds.  Add in the beaver problems we have with their industrious nature (protected species), and we may be in for quite a mess.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It's a cloudy 34 degrees. Going up to only 36 today with winter storm coming in. Rain, snow, sleet. Good weather to stay home.

Today is busy. I have to run a few errands and do some work at home. I will try to find some time to run trains later. Need to work on scenery.

Dining car has arrived and it's time for breakfast. Later.

Y'all have a great Friday.

evening all!

Bracing ourselves for another monumental dump of the 4 letter S word.  Areas east of here are expecting 30-40 cm.  For those of us who are metric impaired, 39 cm is 3ft of white hell. This has been one winter I won't miss...if I ever survive it.

Hmmm?  The Rogers Corners Big Dig.  Might wanna invest in Railscope just to check for cave-ins before running sessions.

Watching Supernatural on dvr and reading emails - wow, over 40 emails today!  Only a few new or classic jokes, so didn't forward much.  Was in training again all day.  Mrs. Brutus is out transporting girlscout cookies and from the 30 plus boxes we were stuck with she and her friends have us down to like 4 boxes left.  This is what happens when someone sells cookies and then moves way - the troop leader is stuck getting rid of them and the people who thought they have cookies coming will be left without even a crumb.  :(

I think we are supposed to get snow again Friday night.  I want to stop and pick up a truck load of drywall first, but it won't be tonight.  Wish me luck!

All this car talk reminds me of a good old song - "Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz, by friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends"  Laugh [(-D]

Got back into the train room and got the LEGACY system to name some of my locomotives. I'm still learning the quirks of the system but it sure is slick! I may have to spring another 3 C notes for a LEGACY system for the dining room. Three levels-six trains. Supposed to be in the low 30's or high 20's in sunny Jax, FL Sunday morning. I am ready to be done with sub 50 temperatures. I keep threatening to move from SE Georgia to the real Florida but it probably won't ever happen.

Don't forget to move your civilian clocks ahead one hour Saturday night. Remember that the railroads always kept to Standard Time. During the DST months when Dad said he had to be at work for the NYC at 6:00 A.M. Mom would always ask if that was Railroad time or not. Everyone stay safe, warm, deiced, and dry.

Evening all

On night shift again tonight.  The weather in Southern Ohio was beautiful today.  We got my friend moved today and the nice weather was an asset.  Truck was LOADED and pulling a 16' tandem that was LOADED.

The JB Weld is great stuff.  It can be machined, when dry.  Wipe clean the surfaced to be bonded with a degreaser, alcohol, thinner, or the like.

Sounds like we are going to get hammered with more snow.  Bleah.  Going to Columbus Friday night for class and Saturday morning class too, then back home to go to work.  8 months to go!

Something that I've noticed with new pads and rotors is the manner in which they are broke in really sets the stage for how long they last.  Easy slow stops for a few days seems to temper the rotor and set the pads.  I've seen a new set of rotors trashed with a hard emergency stop before they coluld get broke in.

Take care all

May God bless

Jim

Dodged one here today - lot's of SNOHIZO to west and north - but all we got was lots o' rain - which is a good thing! Up to 9 inches north of here! Another chance for a little more to night if it goes below freezing. The clouds and DFW "heat island" effect held it off!

Sir James - that is crazy - pads rusting to the rotors - I have never seen that - must be the heavy metallic loaded pads?

Regards, Roy

EVENING ALL,

My wifes car sat in the driveway for a week and the aftermarket brake pads rusted to the rotors.(last summer)what kind of safe auto parts is that?

As I mentioned earlier my DIL and 3 yr old GS stopped by this AM and of course we ran the Hogwarts x. About 315 today the doorbell rang and they are back, this time with the 5 yr old just got out of school. Little bro. told him about the morning visit and big bro(5)wanted to see the HWX run as well. We feel fortunate that all three of our kids live within a mile of us. We know that could change some day but it has been very nice having them close.

I got mail from Lisa today, she is well but has been very busy. We do miss her when she does not check in once in awhile,,,,A pleasant evening to all.....S.J.

Evenin' boys.  Evenin' English.  Sunny & 53 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Actually took the pond heater out and turned the pump on.  Bunch of new faces have emerged.  Winter is s'posed to rear its ugly head again this weekend...we'll see.  Three-day weekend, so I hope to get some work done on the layout.
