G'day Gents!

Comments from the Proprietor:

There are now 127 Pages on this reborn Thread. Reborn as a result of Kalmbach closing down our original site on Jan 1st, but permitting us to resume anew.

I invite one ‘n all to REVIEW the 126 Pages - actually GO BACK ‘n take a look at where we've been. You just can't be a customer-in-good-standing unless you KNOW what has transpired to get us where we are.

Sure, sure - the "habits' of the Forums are kind of "what have you done for me lately?" The attitude is pretty much "Everything is disposable in the Ether - here today, gone tomorrow." Well, we don't practice that here - if we did, we'd never make reference to Posts of the past nor would there be ENCORE! submissions to include repeats of fotos, etc. No, here at "Our" Place we are about CONVERSATION regarding Classic Trains with our precepts clearly outlined on PAGE ONE!

Photo Quiz:

The WHERE should be easy to guess - but the OCCASION may be a bit difficult. If you are a customer-in-good-standing, you should know both!

<of course the date on the foto is a give away!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

See y'all in the morrow! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, still awake? Good. I'll have my weekly favorite, Rumpstek Café de Paris and a cold Thui!  Ohh, one more thing, make sure each guest this Thursday get a drink on me!

Let's get started before I get my food.

Tom –  Snakes? Playing?Confused [%-)] No, they just wonder what hit them in the Mile-High City.Sigh [sigh]

The daughter of the Hooters brunette? No, I think I’ll pass. Copies are never like the originals.Wink [;)]

A VIA Rail trip in the Park car observation dome sounds very interesting.Smile [:)]

Buy a round?Question [?] I am saving my money for the 3rd Annual Rendezvous next year, 210 days from now! The gas price will very likely be above $3/gallon then. Grumpy [|(]

I feel that I am getting in very good shape for next week’s 2007 2nd Annual Darts Challenge Grudge Match due to all training! With that shirt (#4) I’ll be ready for whatever may happen (I hope). I feel even better after reading the two excellent reports from the Dart’s Challenge of 2006! Smile [:)]

A Photo Quiz! Let’s see, the picture was taken at about the same time I entered this Tavern for the first time last year. Anyway, the locomotive that is approaching looks very much like something running to and from Toronto. So my guess is that the picture was taken during the 1st Annual Rendezvous in may 2006!

Union Station, Toronto 1993.

Lars –  Nice models!Thumbs Up [tup] Roco is making very detailed models. I have quite a few of their cars.

Märklin’s model of Class 44 reminds me of when I saw one of those locomotives with a freight train in Germany in the early 70’s.Smile [:)] Nice looking locomotive. I have a Märklin model of the French version of Class 44.

UB7X is/was a cab car for EMU X7. 2nd class seating only. That is just about all I know about UB7X. They were all retired several years ago.

Pete –  Only 2,000 steam locomotives difference on the number built in the USA between the old Railway Magazine and whoever provided the info to Wikipedia! I am surprised that those numbers were so close.Wow!! [wow]

I really don’t know how many steam locomotives were built in Sweden, but I am sure Nohab was #1. I am afraid I know even less what kind of record one of the Swedish locomotive manufacturers hold. Shame on me! Ashamed [*^_^*]

With a powerful locomotive(s) and a heavy train you handle throttle and brakes very carefully.

I like the photo of the Big kid and smaller kids! Wink [;)]

Very nice photos from San Diego Model Museum!Thumbs Up [tup] I remember I spent a good portion of a Saturday there in the 1980’s and I am sure they have added a lot to it since then. Smile [:)]

Greetings Tom and gentlemen......

Since I'm on my way to catch some Zzz [zzz] I won't have stronger stuff. Just give me a Java please and the usual top up with cigars for the boys....$$$$ for yourself.

$$$$ for the cigar box and Mr Wurlitzer.....

pwolfe, I'll guess an E class 2-8-0 in 1953, that we built 2.878 steam locomotives and the the record might be the largest ever order for steam locomotives to Russia.

Great pics as always mate Yeah!! [yeah]!

Tom almighty, I'll deffinetely have a look at your previous 100+ pages to see what I've missed. I won't even try this pop quiz of yours, I haven't done my homework Dunce [D)]....my dog ate it.Whistling [:-^]

EricX2000, nice pic of the GO Transit train mate Yeah!! [yeah], I'll never get used to those "modern" square covered wagons..... *shiver* or those odd angular commuter cars....Confused [%-)]

Have a nice day lads and I'll catch you later....

OKTOBERFEST at "Our" Place every October Saturday at noon!

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative)

Wednesday - Oct 17th:

Lars (LoveDomes) at 10:19 AM: Four more Euro model train fotos for our OPTIONAL Toy ‘n Model Trains Day! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

I watched the BoSox game on Tuesday nite ‘n was quite surprised that they didn't go with their BEST pitcher. I mean what's the point of "saving" someone IF you never get to the point you're "saving" for Question [?] Yeah, I know - that's why I'm NOT a baseball manager - just a retired sailor <of sorts>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Look, Lars, it goes like this - the pointy end of the dart gets thrown at the target! <geesh> Having to ask Boris for advice is NOT the kind of encouragement we need at this point in the Dart's Challenge practice! <yikes>

Received your Email ‘n responded in kind - thanx! Thumbs Up [tup]

Appreciate, as always, your visit - chat - graphics ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tup]

Jan (JanOlov) at 11:59 AM: Okay - I'm pretty much at wits end, Mate!! Email received via the Forums ‘n responded to - BUT - WHY aren't you sending ‘em DIRECT Question [?]

Also, what's with the B'day greetings Question [?] Have I missed someone Question [?] Or something Question [?] Have you checked the contents of those cigars lately Question [?] Hmmmmmm.

Do appreciate your taking the time ‘n making the effort to stop in - buy the drinks ‘n so forth. BUT what's going on - burning the candle at both ends Question [?] Perhaps YOU need a weekend up in the Penthouse Suite . . . we'll see! <grin>

Pete (pwolfe) at 3:17 PM & 3:45 PM: Don't quite know what to make of this confusion you are experiencing with your fotos from Balboa Park in SDiego. Hmmmmm, didn't take NOTES, eh Question [?] <uh oh> How about a brochure Question [?] Hmmmmmmm, probably got "eaten" by the bag that is "attached" to you! <uh oh> So, we've narrowed it down to either HO or N! Hmmmmmm, looks like WE may have to make a trip out there to determine just what is what! Sounds good to me . . .  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

There are some captivating model RR scenes, most appropriately shown on our OPTIONAL Toy ‘n Model Trains Day - thanx! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Did notice a chap in one of your fotos <back towards camera> who had what looks like A BAG strapped to his right shoulder!!! Hmmmmmmm. <uh oh>

Mighty interesting "phenom" taking place with the Original Thread (old bar site) with those numbers of people looking in. The count grows ‘n grows ‘n when added to what we have here, I'd say we've achieved a degree of interest. I'm really not surprised that so many viewers fail to make comments. The Forums just aren't interactive - plain ‘n simple. Quite frankly, I don't think our society is interactive any longer.

I don't experience the "hello" - the "good morning" - the eye contact ‘n so forth that used to take place routinely amongst passers by. I see it with kids, it is a way of life with young adults, ‘n sadly has permeated all generations. We just don't seem to speak to one another. So why would it be different here Question [?]

Surely wouldn't take the competition "lightly" in the Dart's Challenge! Tho

Greetings Tom and gentlemen,

May I have an extra cold Guinness please? Give the lads the usual top and cigar please. $$$$ for yourself....

$$$$ for the cigar box and Mr Wurlitzer....

Tom, don't worry about the "birthday" thingy's mate, nothing meant by them. Was supposed to be meaning "when do I get to party" but since they don't have any "party" smilies I used that one instead. Come to think about it, can I use smilies form others sources?

As for the email, I thought that was what you wanted me to use, the "email" button down in the left corner in every post to contact people. Isn't that the direct or private email?? Also, I'm trying to figure why I get notifications for posts done here sent to my "spam" box....even though I have changed. Confused [%-)]Dunce [D)]

As for "other requests"......I'll have to get back on that one. Whistling [:-^]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

You can almost say that I'm burning the candle in both ends....we're constantly short staffed at work, people being off on holiday some sick and the workload is not getting any easier....Sigh [sigh] Our...."my" nightshift manager is doing his best with what he have but also all the time trying to get people in from agencies....which is a pain in the Censored [censored] to say the least...Laugh [(-D] I have to say that our manager does a great job trying to sort things out for us, but as it seems he doesn't get anywhere Banged Head [banghead].... It has come the point that, when we take time off ourself now, we can't take Monday and Tuesday night off because we're too busy those nights, so that leaves us Wednesday and Thursday nights only....which I'm off next week. I Zzz [zzz] 40+ hours this last weekend so I'll probably need it too....Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Laugh [(-D]

Besides that, we also load the trucks that deliver to the customers in the mornings as well now, so we don't leave until early morning nowadays....

So Tom, please do accept my humble and sincere apologies for being a Royal Pain In The Censored [censored] in one way or another.....Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

Have a or several LARGE or drams on me mate, from my private stash of course....Thumbs Up [tup]

I should be up to speed and all that when we start on our fourth year in "our place"...I hope. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Laugh [(-D]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please (New England Breakfast Blend, today); slide the pastry case over this way, thank you, round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  We'll play a couple of Boris's favorites this a.m., "Billy's Mule," and "The Bowery Grenadiers."  Apologies to all for not stopping by yesterday, but we began at 6:00 a.m. and finished up abt. 10:00 p.m.

Let's see wha's happening.

Pete - I appreciated your comments about the yard - I used to stay at a place near the yard in Whitehall, NY when visiting the D&H.  Traffic patterns have changed since then but Whitehall used to be a busy place - switching cars at all hours with a variety of Alco power - wonderful!

You had a good question on the Turbo.  It got what could kindly be called "mixed reviews" from the passengers, largely because it was so cramped for space inside.  OSP's remark about airframes was well-taken in this regard.  It also smelled like a refinery sometimes because its ventilation system was not the best in the world.  That being said, they could (and did) move even though track conditions back then between Boston and New York left a lot to be desired.  Incidentally, they had a very high pitched horn, amazing Doppler if you were near a crossing when one went by at speed.

I liked the picture of Sierra 34 in the roundhouse.  It took me back, except for the Shop Vac in the corner and the plastic barrels.  Thanks.

Come to WV and see the Shays.  Look up Cass Scenic Railway on the internet and see what I mean.

Eric visited with comments and pictures.  The control stand on the Centennial was a good one - much simpler back then compared to everything that's there now.

Lars - Thanks for the kind words (see my note to OSP below).

When the 6-9 slots in the batting order don't do anything, the starting pitching (with 1½ exceptions is either out-of-shape or head cases), and the bullpen is being misused, well, you get the picture.  Then we do the math.  Boris, slide the abacus over here, please.  Let's see - I give up seven - then I hit three long balls with nobody on, that gives me three.  No, Boris, we don't carry two - put the barmaids down - hey, it looks like I'm still short four; hmmm...

Lovely model locomotive pictures; I remember seeing displays of those manufacturers in hobby stores (remember them?) in Boston.

Jan - Hang in there!

OSP - I would have been booted off the air for more football stuff; Gifford - never the same after the building fell on him in Philadelphia - an iconic moment  of the "old" NFL.  Pat and Kyle - good ones.

I have an Otto Graham card somewhere.  For those who don't remember (or never knew), Cleveland won the NFL East in 1950, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57, 64, 65, 68, and 69.  They were NFL Champions in 1950, 54, 55, and 1964.

Quiz for the "ancient mariners" out there.  Who was the other "Rote" in the NFL?

Last, barmaid, three fingers of the good stuff.  Gentlemen, charge your glasses.  Let's have a toast to "Night Train," "Old Furnace Face," and "Crazy Legs."  Man, they don't have nicknames like they used to, do they?

Work safe

P.S.  The darts tourney draws closer - why are the windows boarded up downtown?  Enquiring minds want to know.

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Ruth my deAH, you surely do have a way of brightening up my day! Wow!! [wow] So just a mugga Joe - I don't need a jolt when looking at you gives me more of "that" than I can handle! <blush> A round for the house ‘n keep the change my sweet! <grin>

Boris, the crittAHs are lined up, so let's get a move on - Awk gets the tray o' seeds - Tex the saucer o' brine - Frostbite the bucket of ice cubes - Juneau the chew bone ‘n Artie the field mouse <out back PULEEEEZE!!> And of course, the small jar of PPF is for you.

A rather uneventful day on Tuesday - I mean at times if not for our Bossman, we cudda shut ‘er down ‘n I doubt anyone wudda cared. <geesh> <double geesh> Guess we can't expect much more when our "regulars" are down in number - just enough to keep things up, but hardly the interaction of days gone by. <geesh again>

Can't add anything to what Da Bossman commented on regarding our friend in Glasgow. Totally messed with my mind too! <huh??>

I see Pete provided some pix - but got a bit tangled up in mind with descriptions! Blames it on his Mrs. at that! Now that's living dangerously, huh Question [?] Anyway, good to see the Wolfman back in rare form ‘n I wondered how in the world he amassed such a bar tab. He'll be working at this joint for the remainder of the year ‘n well into next just to pay it off! Wow!! [wow]

As with what Cap'n Tom has commented on, it doesn't surprise me either that we've had only 1 viewer make a favorable comment about us. I suppose it's little different from any of us just scanning through a thread to see if there's anything of interest. If not, you just move along. HOWEVER, if there are those who routinely check us out several times a week (or maybe even several times a day) then I'd put them in the category described. Thumbs Down [tdn]

For Jan: I received ‘n answered your e-mail! Appears that you are pushing the envelope, mate! But we all have to do what needs to be done in order to pay the bills, huh Question [?] As long as you've got a boss who gives a rat's patoot about the crew - that helps a lot! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hang in there ‘n hope you'll be back to full form in short order! Yeah!! [yeah] That bottle ovAH there next to the <ahem> pany hose container is for you! <wondAH how THAT got there?!?!?>

For CM3 I'm NOT Shane! Figgered it had to be WORK keeping you from us. Always something, huh Question [?] A long day at the plant makes for a dull boy! But your submission says otherwise - chock full o' good "stuff" as always! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Those Euro model trains bring back some memories for me as well. I didn't have a one, but do remember seeing ‘em in the "finer" stores, especially the hobby stores I couldn't afford to shop in while "in the city." Yeah, I wondAHd what kid(s) were getting those for Christmas! Anyway, Lionel ‘n American Flyer ‘did it' for me and if I evAH get around (ROUNDTUIT) to putting up that layout - it will still be those two train sets of mine running in opposite directions! Yeah!! [yeah]

Why you must be referring to Tobin Rote, QB for the Packers, etc. . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobin_Rote

Heard from Ron (DD1) down in Mississippi - said a twister touched down very close to where they are - all's okay - but rather frightening to say the least! Says he'll be back to the bar soon . . .

Good day Tom and all you gents (you know who you are). I think there has been too much drinking going on here so NO drinks on me! (Only kidding) Drinks of course and my usual. Have you got the Guggenheim Sauerkraut Band on the box? There has been a flurry of activity going around down here in Ms. A tornado passed by us at 6:00 this morning and tore up a bunch of house trailers. They were about a quarter mile from us. I slept through it, but it woke my wife who said the house shook like an earthquake.

Pete: I've been to the San Diego model railroad museum many times in the past. I never get tired of touring it. I've never seen it operating. It's always been pretty empty. I guess they must have operating days (nights) after the museum closes for the day. Congratulations on the 2500 post. I think the record for the biggest single order of locomotives built by a Swedish builder for Russia is the answer to your quiz, but I think Jan beat me to it.

Jan: Nice pictures of the SJ. I've gotten to appreciate foreign railroads more since I've been exposed to them here on this forum. The Y-8 looks the equivalent of our doodlebug. I notice the seatbacks don't flip facing directions as they do here on commute trains. Is that so? Thanks for the answer to the counterweight question. I came across a picture of a German steam engine that had the counterweight of the2nd drivers out of 10 out of line by 90° to accommodate an inside cylinder arrangement. As always, fine pics of the UB-7.

Allan: Our main vehicle is a Chevy Silverado pickup. It is the best type of vehicle to drive in these parts. I'm looking to get a micro truck, just for use on the property. There are so many 4-wheelers around here, but they are expensive and can't carry a payload. The micro trucks are 4-wheel, right hand drive and carry a ½ ton. They cost less than ½ the cost of an RV 4-wheeler and can be licensed for the road.

Eric: Thanks for the info on the wheels. I scaled them off a drawing in a train book and was pretty close. My drivers were 6 mm too small and the wheels on axle 1 and 5 were 10.6mm too large. Am I correct in saying the diameter is measured over the tread and not the flange? The control stand in the Centennial looks kind a cramped for such a large engine.

Tom: I feel the same way about cruise ships. The only one I would consider would be the Alaska cruise. For the most part, I fall in the middle of the pack, too old for young people and too young for old people. It looks like those clamshell doors on the turbo train would be good air brakes. Sounds like a lot went into the design of the turbo train. I wonder how big the reduction gear was. On ships, the red gear takes up a lot of room. Gas turbines really have to wind out to create hp. I wonder how an LM2500 would work in a locomotive, if it would even fit. Nice coverage on the turbo train. I wonder how the electric motors were connected for operation in tunnels via third rail? On ships, the gas turbine speed is reduced by the reduction gear to turn the propeller shafts. Additionally, there are inputs to the red gear for a diesel and on some ships, an electric motor. Some ships have all three. When an electric motor is included, it is known as a "trolling motor". Sorry for the fragmented dialogue.

Fergie: I finally got squared away with the Canadian Coast Guard. During my research into the subject, I read where the Canadian navy was the third largest behind the U.S. and UK during WWII.

Lars: The pic of the SP daylight #4411 looks a little weird to me. It looks like the train is listing to stbd, the tracks too. Must be an illusion or an odd camera angle. Those model engines are beautiful. Wish I could afford even one. Nice bunch of book covers.

CM3: I know the feeling of being inside a Caravelle. It's pretty tight, even for an hours flight. I really don't care for flying at all. When I was working, I flew a lot, but now it's terra firmer (the more firm the less terror).

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTH.Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC I see Jan got pretty close with my quiz, I will give the answers later. I must admit I had no idea how many steam locomotives were built in Great Britain (the survey has counted GB as one although giving the totals for England, Scotland and Wales) until I read the articleYeah!! [yeah]. I think it is great someone has done the surveyBow [bow]; I will have to bring the magazine along to the Rendezvous.Yeah!! [yeah]

Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup].

They were building a HO model of the Tehachapi Loop when we were there, it will be great to go back when it is finishedYeah!! [yeah], I am sure it be a great layoutApprove [^].

Is there a difference in the behavior of locomotives between one powerful locomotive and two or more less powerful ones in multiple, when driving themQuestion [?].

JAN Well done with the QuizBow [bow]. According to the survey there were 3,351 steam locos built in Sweden, it said the last one was a 2-6-4 Tank engine for SJ. Yes and the record was that the order to Nohab for Russia was the largest single order placed for steam locos. Beer on me for the rest of the week.Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks for the kind words on the photos.Thumbs Up [tup]

Really hope your workload gets easier soon.

CM3 Glad my mention of the yard brought back memoriesThumbs Up [tup]. I had a quick look at an old locoshed book and Rugby had 12 diesel shunters (switchers) allocated to it in 1962. This was before the lines to Peterbourgh and Leicester were closed and a lot of marshaling of trains took place. Last time I was there it was one switcher to help with the coal train for local cement works.

Thanks for the info on the Turbo TrainThumbs Up [tup]; they must have had good bogies on the articulated cars.

I would very much like to travel on the Cass Scenic Railway behind those ShaysYeah!! [yeah]. The bride's mother bought me a set of  5 DVDs for my birthday and on one of those is a feature on the Cass taken during the photographic specialsApprove [^].

That is a very impressive record for Cleveland.Wow!! [wow]

LARS Many thanks for the kind wordsThumbs Up [tup].

I can't even begin to think when I will have worked off my bar tab after last weekend's extravaganceShock [:O]. If I get my descriptions of my photos anymore wrong they will be offering me a job as a weatherman.Smile [:)]

I agree about those who, as you say, MUST be viewing regularly at the bar, and surely would miss us if we weren't there, but won't say any thing.Thumbs Down [tdn]

Loved those great nicknames of the old players.

Great set of bookcovers and DVDs from the Larsman Mobile all in color tooApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. We must give aBow [bow] to those old photographers who were willing to buy the color film that must have been expensive in the early days of color film.

Will this photo, of what I think is of a New York Streetcar at work in San Francisco, get me anything of that massive bar tabQuestion [?]Big Smile [:D]

RON Real glad you are all OK after that TornadoThumbs Up [tup], a quarter mile is very close.

We were lucky I think at San Diego Model Museum,Thumbs Up [tup] as it was a special opening day where the local residents got free admission and the layouts were working, it was quite busyApprove [^].

Thanks for the congratulations on the 2,500th post.Thumbs Up [tup]

Yes Nohab had the largest steam locomotive order placed with them.

Many thanks for the very interesting information on the gas turbinesThumbs Up [tup], it seems that there is a lot of problems in using them for rail traction despite their lightweight.

TOM Great to talk to you today.Thumbs Up [tup]

YES got the location and the occasion in your photo.

I did have a look back at the original post at the old Our Place; it is amazing how we had so many different topicsThumbs Up [tup]. Enjoyed reading an encore of the first Mentor Village GazetteSmile [:)].

I think I am right in thinking that the old Our Place as roughly the same number of views since January 1st as the new Our Place, it would be really interesting to know if the search engines are pointing browsers there. That is a very true comment about how attitudes have changed. I met a guy who was over from England, and we got talking, he asked how long I had been here and he said England had changed, I asked in what way, and he said the main thing was how people there avoided speaking and viewed everyone with suspicionDisapprove [V]Thumbs Down [tdn]. He lived about 20 miles outside London. I wonder what the cause is

Hello Captain Tom and all present!

I know Leon, but I am not sure what time it is. A double cheese burger will be fine. Raw onion, please. Coffee!  And round for the house! I know, Tom missed it so you better tell him when he shows up.

A quick stop tonight, just long enough to have my burger.

JanOlov –  You have a point!Thumbs Up [tup] Those cars don’t look very nice, but they have a lot of room inside for many seats.Smile [:)]

Tom –  I am afraid you are correct about that brunette.Sigh [sigh]

It seems like  you didn’t get enough sleep last night! Too tired?Wink [;)] That is the only explanation I can find that you missed the free round today!Sign - Oops [#oops] Check what I said to Leon yesterday morning!

Thanks for the NP Fallen Flag!Thumbs Up [tup] Always interesting info. Yellowstone Limited, did that train ever go to Yellowstone N.P?Question [?]

CM3 –  I agree about the control stand. Today everything is computerized and you have a number of screens in front of you or on the side of you. I prefer controls that looks like controls and not a video game control.Yeah!! [yeah]

Lars –  How is your arm doing?Question [?] I hope you are in good shape for next week’s darts.Wink [;)]

Interesting books and videos!Thumbs Up [tup] PRR is never wrong! I like the picture of the GG1! Yeah!! [yeah]

Talking about videos, I saw a new one called “Admin work, how to get it done in a pleasant way”. There was a building in the cover picture that looked kind of familiar. Hmmm. Whistling [:-^]

Ron –  Glad you made it safely through that tornado! It was a close one!Wow!! [wow]

If I remember right, the biggest single order of steam locomotives was 1,000 locos big. The order was later cut back for political reasons to 500 locomotives.Smile [:)]

You are correct, the wheel diameter is measured over the tread.

I don’t know, I don’t think the control stand look cramped.Wink [;)] Everything necessary to operate the locomotive is there, has its place and is easy to reach.

Pete –  I prefer to have several locomotives in multiple instead of one very powerful locomotive pulling a heavy train.

The last steam locomotives built in Sweden was the 20 Class S1 tank engines built for SJ. Built 1952-53. I am afraid I don’t have any good pictures of any but here is a S1.

The streetcar in your picture was built 1947 and is actually from Philadelphia, where it was in service 1947-92. But it is painted to honor Brooklyn & Queens Transit Corporation. See link below.

http://www.streetcar.org/mim/streetcars/fleet/pcc/1053/index.html

Railcar #19 was built 1919 for San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy Railroad in Tuolumne County. It was initially used as an ambulance on rails, could travel up to 50 MPH on straight track.

Here is a link to a site with info on Railtown Collection.

Guten Morgen allerseits!

Wie ist jeder? Es is OKTOBERFEST! Partei wollen wir!

It's FRIDAY ‘n time to start the wind down for the week's end! Yeah!! [yeah] Draw yourself a mugga Joe, a couple of pastries from The Mentor Village Bakery case ‘n order a <light> or <traditional> breakfast from our Menu Board! Thumbs Up [tup]

Comments from the Proprietor:

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative)

Thursday - Oct 18th:

Jan (JanOlov) at 7:54 AM: First off - NO APOLOGIES REQUIRED - just had a bit of trouble understanding what was going on. Now we all know - you are burning the candle at both ends. Relax before relapse comes to mind! <uh oh>

Suggestion to review our past Pages is for ALL, not just the newer group. Seems to be one of those bad habits encouraged by use of Forums like these to just look at what IS rather than what WAS. At the very minimum, our customers should review the Pages between their last Post ‘n the most current. Otherwise, what's the point of trying to fit in at this bar Question [?] Anyway - your participation with us at the bar is appreciated VERY MUCH - next one is on me! Thumbs Up [tup]

Top up, cash ‘n cigars always appreciated! <ka-ching> <ka-ching> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

CM3 Shane (coalminer3) at 8:59 AM: I see Lars jumped all over those nicknames you dropped on us! Man must have more time on his hands these days <daze> eh Question [?] <grin> Anyway, with the names I've been noticing on the tube connected to the baseball players, I'm having a hard enough time figuring out the how to pronounce ‘em - they don't need nicknames to bollix it up further! <groan> What ever happened to the simple names in life like: Joe - Mike - Bill - Jim - Tom - Pete - Shane Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] - ooooooooooh of course I KNOW - we're into that "sea change" of cultural high tide. No further comment . . .

I KNOW I'm old, for I remember Tobin Rote! <Good Gawd Gertie!!>

You Posted this over on "my other Thread" yesterday

Good Morning:  Interesting selection of pictures.  Turbo had a lot of color schemes throughout its career.  Quiz for the day - where was the refuel and repair shop for Turbos when they ran on the NEC?

work safe

and I surely don't have the answer! <groan>

That list of NFL east titles looks impressive - and it was - but one must temper it with the reality of the day - so few teams in comparison with the glut of today. Thanx for the reminder of just how great those Browns were . . .

Apparently you haven't received your "notice" from the Mentor Village Home Defense League. Let me share the text with you:

Greetings!

The citizens of Can-Am County have called upon you to make arrangements to report to the Mentor Village Induction Centre and Roller Derby Rink for training in the art of riot control.

Your report date is shown on the obverse of this letter. <obverse being the reverse, but totally depends upon which side you've begun reading!>

Axes, maces and flails along with helmets, mail and shields may be drawn at the quartermaster's tent and will be permanently assigned at the conclusion of training.

This call to duty is in compliance with and under the authority of The Act, Section I, Part VII, Subsection (A), paragraph 3(e) as amended by Appendix XXVI, Part IX, Subsection (C), paragraph 17 (g).

/s/ Mortimer Snerd,

City Clerk,

Mentor Village Home Defense League, a subsidiary of the

Can-Am County Self-Defense and Pest Control Forces

Ah the lament of the baseball fan - I know the feeling oh too well . . . <groan>

Blues are looking good through their first 5 games! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Many thanx for the visit, round, quarters ‘n chat! Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars (LoveDomes) at 10:02 AM: Our always dependable Manager stopped by with a fine rendition of Classic railway book ‘n video covers! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Just looking at ‘em always brings to mind images of what it must've been like "back in the day"! Good to see the mixing of modern-day <commuter> ‘n also traction! Nicely done, Mate! Yeah!! [yeah]

That GG1 cover really brought back a memory or three as I definitely recall that view while waiting for the train over in Joisey as a kid. Wow!! [wow] Wonderous beast of a machine, eh Question [?] Youbetcha! Thumbs Up [tup]

Always appreciate the comments, Larsman Mobile visits ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tu<div style=

Dear bartender, may I please have the usual extra cold Guinness, top up with cigars for the boys? $$$$ for yourself as well...

$$$$ for the cigar box and Mr Wurlitzer....

coalminer3, I'm doing my best to hang in there mate, believe you me...Laugh [(-D]

Da Larsman, cougfh....cough.....cough.....strong stuff....cough....thanks mate!Shock [:O] You're absolutely right mate, having a boss that gives a rats a.. is half the battle....

Great looking covers mate.....Yeah!! [yeah]!

Tom, Enjoyed the NP post Thumbs Up [tup]

DD1, You're absolutely correct Sir, the seats doesn't flip to go with the dirrection of travel....many hours have I spent on our "doodlebugs"....Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] going on holidays.

pwolfe, darn....Banged Head [banghead] completely forgot about the S-1 class...oh well. Anyhoo, about the Russian order for the steamers. I f I remember correctly, I read somewhere that the Russian paid for the steamers in solid gold bars, and when last ship, I think, arrived to pick up the last ones, they simply unloaded the gold on to the quay....

As for the workload, end of the month tend to be a wee bit easier for us. What I'm worried abouth though, is x-mas... The holidays pretty much double our workload Sigh [sigh]. Those who came up with the prohibition idea back in the '20s knew what they were doing.....Yeah!! [yeah]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Laugh [(-D]

Great pics as always mate....Yeah!! [yeah]! I really liked the street car, any chance to see some more.....Big Smile [:D]? I'll buy you a drink for each one.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Laugh [(-D]

EricX2000, never really been a fan of double decker cars, not even Amtraks....*shiver* Like those pics mate...Yeah!! [yeah]!

Tom, mate.... of course an apology  is needed. You and Da Larsman run a nice and tight ship here. I tend to do something to mess things up a wee bit one way or another , but I'm getting there. It's a Censored [censored] shame we don't have a place like this in real life.....Sigh [sigh] I'm sure that it would have been one  Censored [censored] of nice place to hang out at 24/7. With fantastic people like we have here, you can't simply lose....Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

I always go back to my last post to see who's said what and all that before my next post. But to be honest, I've never gone all way back to the beginning of time, I'll do so this weekend to see what and who I've missed.....should be interesting I'm sure. Might be a good way to get to know people a bit more here....

Nice "girl" mate Yeah!! [yeah]!

Until later today, a wee toast for yous...

Raises glass.....

Where'er ye bide in the world sae wide,
We wish ye a neuk on the sunny side,
Wi' muckle o' love and little o' care,
A wee bit pursie wi' siller to spare,
Yer ain wee ingle when day is spent,
In a wee bit housie wi' hearts content.

Wherever you live in the world so wide,
We wish you a nook on the sunny side,
With much love and little care,
A little purse with money to spare,
Your own little hearth when day is spent,
In a little house with hearts content.

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Ruth my deAH, your radiant beauty outshines the sun! Wow!! [wow] I'm just on the groggy side this day, so perhaps a double jolt in the coffee will get me going! <grin> A round for the boyz - treats for the crittAHs - PPF for Boris ‘n the change is for you! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Sports news occupies my mind this morning. So, the boyz from Beantown won a game to remain alive. Back to the Bay area they go - with yet ANOTHER day off! Not hard to tell how the scheduling was done - all for the TV. Utterly ridiculous, shameful ‘n without a bit of care for the fans, game ‘n time of year! <geesh>

So, Joe Torre will be seeking employment. Doubt he'll be heading for the "soup lines" though. I'm surprised he waiting for the "offer" rather than telling George to stick it immediately after that public "release" a couple of weeks back. If you're gonna get rid of a guy - do it, but keep the rantings outta the papers. <double geesh> Yankee soap opera, Part Who Knows How Many!?!!? <triple geesh>

For Da Boss! Cutter Hamilton, huh Question [?] Well, I REMEMBER seeing that class vessel in my seagoing days, more than a few times. Great looking ship ‘n I forgot just how old these "new" cutters are. Time flies, huh Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Fine looking Northern Pacific fallen flag ‘n drumheads! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Here's my most favorite NP book cover . . .

Many thanks for providing the Urls for the Gazette!! I've been meaning to ask, but somehow it slips my mind. When I noticed Pete's comments, it came back. Then there they were! I'll be sure to check ‘em out - they are TERRIFIC!! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Any time I get an "oh-fish-ul" looking piece of mail that begins with "Greetings," my spine tingles. I threw mine into the trash!! Guess I bettAH retrieve it, huh Question [?]

Axes, maces and flails along with helmets, mail and shields
Wow!! [wow] Nicely done, Cap'n Tom - nicely done! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

For Jan: Back in full form I notice! Thumbs Up [tup]

Every now ‘n then I've come across a "place" has the COME ON IN ‘n SIT A SPELL "feel" to it. But since my bar frequenting days are long past, "Our" Place has filled the void quite well. I think your comments pretty much echo my own in that regard - a great place for sure! [tup ]Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice toast! <clink> Here's to ya, mate! Thumbs Up [tup]

For Eric: So you read MY book, huh Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Quite a title, dontchathink Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Great trolley link! Also enjoyed the California Railtown Url! Thumbs Up [tup]

Really interesting Swede steamer shots . . .

My arm is doing well - been hoisting TWO tankards at a time 'n can see the "build up" taking place. Unfortunately it's in my waistline! <uh oh> Hope YOU are finding the target!! <grin>

For Pete: You provide a picture of a trolley and then expect ‘something' from the Manager!?!? What am I missing Question [?] <snap> <crack> Back to work - back, back . . . <uh oh> Reduce the bar tab . . .  yeah, sure. <groan> And there bettAH NOT be any of this "I need time off" stuff - you have a HUGE debt to pay 'n lotsawork to take care of! <grrrrrrr>

Do you suppose the changes taking place in the UK have anything to do with the influx of those with ideologies H-bent on destroying the Kingdom Question [?] I do! Censored [censored]

I think Da Bossman hit it on the head about those railcars! A getaway on the tracks for the Chicago mob scene comes to mind . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

For Ron: A twister in the same COUNTY would be too close for me - but having one THAT close - well that's another story. Glad to know all's well though. Slept through it, huh Question [?] Funny, when aboard ship I could wake up at the snap of a finger -

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; Coffee, please (New England Four Seasons Blend); round for the house; and $ for the jukebox.  Running a bit late this a.m. as I'm getting ready for next Monday's activities.  They try and do as much as they can b4 the weather turns absolutely awful

It's raining here and we may get some more - we really need it, too.

Lars stopped by with all kinds of stuff.  Tobin Rote is, of course, correct.  There was also a "Furnace Face" in the NFL - so back to the books. The hockey reference is dead on target.

The bookmobile is out front.  PRSL is a good pick - look at the honking big Baldwin pulling the passenger train.  The CNJ book is on my "look at" list when I head to the frozen north (and the train show) next month.  NYC Pentrex - got it; also have the other one as well, although on separate DVDs.  The Vintage Santa Fe Diesels is one of the best out there, IMHO.

Nice dome pictures.  The B&O Stratadome is an interesting one as it still has the lights.  They used to illuminate the passing scenery at night.  Check out the trucks - the trucks on those cars were adapted tom operate in conditions of tight clearances en rote which is why they look a little different than what we're used to seeing.

The Sawx are still alive.  Interesting game last night; especially the sidebar game within a game.  Jeez, I'm gonna charge the mound when the other guy has consistently been throwing 96-97 AND is holding a baseball?  Not tonight, Mildred!  Torre goes west (remember you heard it here first), but it may not happen for awhile.  To paraphrase the Don, "They made him an offer he could refuse."

DD1 - Glad you have the shiny side up!  We used to deal with that stuff all the time when I lived in Tennessee - can't say I liked it much.  I knew there had to be someone out there who remembered the Caravelle.

Pete  visited with comment and observations.  The PCC in the picture is an interesting late variation as it has rider windows.  Boston and Philadelphia had them on their cars and I am not sure who else did (I am not that much a devotee of traction although Boris does enjoy riding the open cars on the Mentor Street Railway because he can scoop stuff off sidewalk café tables as the car goes by.

The track cars are worth study, but some of us want to look at all of neat toys in the shop - belt drives and all.  BTW, there is a book called Hetch Hetchy and Its Dam Railroad which will fill in a lot of the details.

Eric stopped by - Good to hear from you

OSP has sent along NP material and lots of other commentary as well - a tip of the Boston cap to you re the Hamilton; remember her well.  BTW, I thought you would have hammered the Turbo question out of the park, knowing that part of the world.  The Turbo Facility was at Fields Point, RI - just a tad down the bay for Providence.

Well, I'd better get back to it.

Oh, almost forgot, we will have extensive coverage of the Pre Tournament Parade and Smackdown.  I see where Boris is already filing his teeth and the rest of the critters are getting ready to do or die for alma mater.  Those who were at the last tournament remember (if there are any working brain cells left) that the parade was a high point (BTW, the boys were acquitted eventually of all felony charges), of the festivities and that the mascots (each of them) played their part.

However, we have a new mascot in Artie.  He's a tough interview, and all he says is "who."  I heard from our intrepid reporter that Artie is a lot more profound than he sounds and that he may very well be a "sleeper" in the mix.   We have also heard rumors of reactivation of the Zeppelin (regrettably under new management).  So much to investigate and so little time.

Work safe

Hello Tom and all in

Drinks on me - still pretty busy I'm afarid, and conscious of need to report back on some excellent LMS films from the 30s and 40s seen last night plus another trip report due to a passenger run through the local former coalfield area with some interesting sites to behold.

Hope everyone well - certainly soem interesting stuff to read been posted recently - apols this is not as inclusive as I'd like - but best wishes to all (you know who you are!)

Hi Tom and all.

A quick pint of Bathams please RUTH.

We are going down to the Bride's mother  for the weekend in a bit. I have had a look through the fine posts, since my last post, but I am going to need more time to study them as there is a lot of great material as usual and they are too good not to give them the time they deserve.

Should be back at the bar Monday.I prepared a couple of photos of two diesels at RailTown.

Sorry about the rushed post but it as been one of those mornings

So a ROUND for all please RUTH.

Pete.

G'day Gents!

Just to get a leg up on the comments . . .

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative)

Friday - 19 Oct 2007:

Jan (JanOlov) at 7:24 AM: What a fine toast - ‘n the translation rounded it off quite well too! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] <thanx!>

So here's the deal - stop apologizing - get with the program - send your Emails DIRECT - keep the brass polished - remain inclusive in word ‘n deed - look both ways before crossing the street - don't pick your nose - <huh????> Oh, fughgedaboudit! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Did you receive your "notice" from the Mentor Village Home Defense League Question [?] Anyone who has signed on for the Dart's Challenge ‘n Grudge Match can get an exemption from serving. But you still must undergo the training . . . <uh oh>

As always, appreciate the top up - cigars - cash - chat ‘n visit! Hope your weekend provides for some REST ‘n RELAXATION!! Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars (LoveDomes) at 9:01 AM: A super fine book cover ‘n five dome shots - nice way to begin the morning! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Yeah, I like that NP cover too . . . Yeah!! [yeah]

The B&O Strata-Dome with the floodlights on the roof is one that created a bit of a stir over on the Original Thread. Remember how we had a guy who wouldn't "let go" of an opinion even if proven otherwise Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Floodlights vs Headlights if I recall . . . <grin>

I enjoyed my tour aboard the USCGC Hamilton - best sea duty I had, far ‘n away <aweigh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Once the bilge keels were added, she rode far better . . . Could tell more, but this place is for Classic Trains - not sea stories from old sailors! <grin>

Best retrieve that "call up" notice, otherwise the Village Elders will be sending out the goon squad to round up guys like you! <uh oh>

Agree wholeheartedly, Joe Torre shudda definitely told ‘em to stick it early on . . . Doubt he'll be headed back here, for the press ‘ate him alive' during his managerial pursuits. Loved him as a player, not so as dugout boss.

Looks like your worker - our Bar Chandler - skedaddled for the weekend! <uh oh>

Many thanx for the continued support, graphics, round ‘n chat! Have a most enjoyable weekend, Mate! Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3 Shane (coalminer3) at 10:08 AM: Figured you'd be in a <light> mood today as the BoSox finally came out of "it." I think the Cleveland manager shudda lifted their starter early on . . . however, just looked like Boston was into the game, whereas the Indians were in a <funk>. So back to Boston they go - with a day off <again>!! How ridiculous is THAT!?!?! Boston needs to win ‘em both - Indians only need one. And here I thought it would be a "walk" for the BoSox. What do I know!?!!? <grin>

Nah, didn't have the foggiest about Fields Point - nary a clue! Really, my interests in railroading back in the years I was living in New England (1964-67) (1968-73) was pretty much restricted to the fledgling HO layout. Much too occupied with career, family ‘n part time employment to make up for the Censored [censored] ridiculously low pay we were getting back than. So that's my story ‘n I'm sticking to it! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

We're all gearing up for the pre-tournament parade ‘n riot control "smackdown"! <uh oh>

Torre heading west, eh Question [?] Well I doubt it will be here (see above comments to Lars).

Thanx for the visit, chat, quarters ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tup] Hope the weekend is a pleasant ‘n relaxing one for you ‘n yours! Yeah!! [yeah]

Dan (DL-UK) at 11:47 AM: As said a few times lately, a brief visit is far better than no visit! Always enjoy your presence ‘n of course the round helps too! <ka-ching> <ka-ching>

Hope that when the situation presents itself that you'll be able to "catch up" - surely would be a shame to miss out on the goings on here at the Saloon by the Siding!

Have a great weekend! Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete (pwolfe) at 12:39 PM: There are guys who frequent this joint ‘n then there are guys who think about this joint. You, Sir are in the latter category ‘n I appreciate your taking the time ‘n making the effort to provide us with a visit, some fotos ‘n a few lines before heading out for a weekend with your bride! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

As Proprietor, I'll tear off a few "squares" of those I.O.U.s from the "roll" of bar tabs! <grin>

Was wondering if we'd see you today in that you had me

(SDTI) is a subsidiary of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). The Trolley began revenue service on July 26, 1981, making it the first modern light-rail system in California. It is the fifth most-ridden light rail system in the United States.

The Trolley initially used the same German-built Siemens-Duewag U2 vehicles as Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, Canada as well as Frankfurt, Germany. The system has since been expanded to include the SD-100 and Avanto S70 vehicles manufactured by Siemens.

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Early Saturday morning! Leon, I want an early breakfast! Oh, I know! French Toast with powder sugar and syrup. A large OJ. Coffee and freshly baked Cheese Danish!

Now, let's see what happened today!

Tom –  Thanks for the drink!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] I guess Northern Pacific passed close to the north side of Yellowstone N.P. I have to check my map. Smile [:)]

A lot of info on San Diego Light Rail!Thumbs Up [tup] Very interesting.Yeah!! [yeah] I have to find my pictures I took about ten years ago riding it.

JanOlov –  You are correct about how the Russians paid for those 500 locomotives, with solid gold bars. I read somewhere it was 56 tonnes of gold bars.Wow!! [wow]

So you don’t like cars like these?

You have a nice view from them.Smile [:)]

Lars –  Ahh, it was your book!!Oops [oops] No, I didn’t read it, just checked the pictures!Whistling [:-^]

Glad to hear your arm is doing well!Smile [:)] Me finding the target? I think somebody said a while ago it will be on the north wall, a little bit west of the east side. Confused [%-)]

Interesting info on the turbines! Thanks for the link!Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice pictures of those dome cars!Thumbs Up [tup] I can’t help it, but I think the Holland America, Westours #1056, looks like an extended bus. Mischief [:-,]

CM3 –  Rain in your part of the country? Wish we could get some here too.Smile [:)]

Never heard about Hetch Hetchy Railroad until last night when Pete showed the pictures of those rail cars.

Wasn’t there a bomber flyover during the Pre Tournament Parade last year?Question [?] Do you know if those bombers still are air worthy? I guess that is not important, they will probably get them up in the air anyway.Sigh [sigh]

DL –  Waiting for your LMS films report! have a nice weekend!Smile [:)]

Pete –  The smaller loco must be Sierra Railway #5, Plymouth 8-ton from the 1930’s.
Sierra Railway #613 is an ALCO 1953 MRS-1. Ex-U>S> Navy No. 65-000613.
Nice pictures!!

The Hiawathas were named passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road), and traveled from Chicago to the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The first Hiawatha trains ran in 1935. By 1947, there were five routes carrying the Hiawatha name:

  • The Twin Cities Hiawatha - the main line route From Chicago, Milwaukee to St. Paul and Minneapolis;
  • The North Woods Hiawatha - a spur route off the Chicago-Minnesota main line leading from New Lisbon, Wisconsin to Minocqua, Wisconsin
  • The Chippewa-Hiawatha - connected Chicago to Ontonagon in Michigan's Upper Peninsula via Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin.
  • The Midwest Hiawatha - utilized the Milwaukee Road's mainline across Illinois and Iowa to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Omaha, Nebraska (the train split into two parts in Manilla, Iowa).
  • The Olympian Hiawatha - which traversed the Milwaukee mainline from Chicago-Twin Cities-Seattle/Tacoma.

The Hiawatha innaugurated service between Chicago and the Twin Cities on May 29, 1935, on a regular 6 hour schedule covering 410 miles (660 km). The first Milwaukee Road Hiawathas were streamlined lightweight trains designed to meet competition from the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's (Burlington Route) Zephyrs and Chicago & Northwestern's '400. Unlike the diesel-powered Zephyrs, the Hiawatha trains were pulled by steam locomotives, though the trains were by no means slow. In fact, these locomotives (Milwaukee classes A and F7) were some of the fastest steam engines ever built, with schedule times on some routes requiring speeds of well over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Some believe that these trains, styled by Otto Kuhler, may have broken the official steam locomotive speed record set by the Mallard, as the trains were said to exceed 120 miles per hour (193 km/h) on a regular basis; but there is no actual evidence of this happening (mainly because the speed was illegal in America then.)

Like the Burlington Zephyr and Union Pacific's City of Salina spectators regularly lined the tracks to watch the streamlined Hiawathas and the Milwaukee Road train quickly became an icon of streamlining. The Twin Cities Hiawatha ran twice daily in each direction, with morning and afternoon trains. Unlike the competition, the Hiawatha train was not articulated and could be changed in length, depending on service needed. It competed in the hot Chicago-Twin Cities market with the Chicago & Northwestern '400, and Burlington's Twin Cities Zephyr.

Due to its great economic success, in 1936-37 the Milwaukee Road completely re-equipped the original Hiawathas with a new Hiawatha based roughly on the 1935 design. In 1938, the train was re-equipped again with the rib-sided 1938 Hiawatha with its famous finned beaver-tail observation car was designed by noted industrial designer Otto Kuhler.

With the delivery of the 1938 trainsets, the original 1935 Hiawatha equipment was reassigned to the Chicago to Omaha/Sioux City route where it ran as the Midwest Hiawatha. Another train, The Northwoods Hiawatha, ran with older cars from earlier series also.

Train Second #101, Afternoon Hiawatha; 9 cars.  Portage, Wis., August 9, 1939.

Train #100, Hiawatha. Minneapolis, Minn., August 4, 1937.

Train #101, Hiawatha; 6 cars, 55 MPH.  Leaving Chicago, Ill., September 25, 1935.

Train #101, Afternoon Hiawatha; 5 cars, 20 MPH.. Leaving Portage, Wis., August 9, 1937.

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Cindy my sweet, time for a cold one - how about a frosty mug of Schaefer B4 I head out to "the big top" where the shenanigans are in full swing for OKTOBERFEST! <wow> Looks like a great turnout this fine day . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

I see Boris ‘n Leon are having a great time out back, so let me spring for the treats for the crittAHs - a small jar of PPF for Boris, ‘n a pony keg of whatever Leon would like! <grin> Ah yes, change is YOURS! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

SPECIAL NOTE: Rob c'mon back to the bar!! What IS this nonsense about if you can't do it all you won't do anything Question [?] Have you gone to the same school as barndad Doug Question [?] That's kinda what he tried to convince us of B4 disappearing.

So, here's the <skinny> YOU ARE and have been A MOST IMPORTANT CUSTOMER of this bar - so get your stern section back here - pronto quick! OTHERWISE, I just may have to make a trip up your way to drag your caboose <van> down here to Mentor Village! By the way, Vito the Hit ‘n his boyz send their "regards" - IF YANOWUTTHEYMEAN!!!! <uh oh>

For Da Boss! Excellent San Diego Trolley article! Came at the right time since Wolfman Pete recently visited there.  Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Wolfman Pete!!! WHO in Censored [censored] bloody blue blazes let him go away for the weekend! AGAIN!! What is THIS??? Doesn't this guy have a home?!!?!? Why don't they move to wherever it is they go all the time! <geesh> <quadruple geesh> AND furthermore, why can't he get online from wherever it is they go???? <arrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhh> Most exasperating fellow this Wolfman - most exasperating! <arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh>

BUT he is the guy who did such a great job last weekend in helping to "save the day" when Da Boss and me were off line. Hmmmmmm. He's also most dependable <majority of times> and supportive of this bar and the way Da Boss organized it. Hmmmmmm. He's also got a wit that doesn't quit! Hmmmmm. Oh well, enjoy the weekend, mate - you've earned it. <I think!>

Back to Da Bossman: Love the Alaska pix - keep- ‘em coming! I see next weekend will be "it" - however, they "live" here on these pages, so that's a PLUS for anyone wishing to take in the sights along the right-of-way between Anchorage ‘n Fairbanks - both ways! <yeah buddy!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

For Jan! I see you've rebounded - must've gotten some shut eye that worked! Thumbs Up [tup]

I kinda view hanging out in taverns the way mariners view the serenity of the sea. Can't trust either! Nope. Taverns are far too comfortable for my likes, ‘n the more time I've spent in ‘em, the more trouble I've gotten into! <grin> Just love the atmosphere, but we all know what "happens" after bending the elbow for a couple of hours - reality departs ‘n suddenly it's "new man emerging" or something like that. Those days <daze> are long gone for me. I'm "safe" in this joint! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] The sea Question [?] Well I don't think there's a need to explain how suddenly conditions change ‘n then . . . . <uh oh>

Nice spate of "stuff" - BUT - Saturday is supposed to be Encore! day. I mean what's the point of providing such great NEW material IF we haven't got anyone watching, aside from the likes of me that is?!?!  <grin> HOWEVER, your efforts mean a lot to the continued success of this joint - so thanks, mate! Here's to ya, ‘n have a refill on me - drinks out in "the big top" are free today . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

For Shane! Of course - how quickly time passes - Billy Kilmer (Saints) was the NFL's "furnace " along with the John Riggins (Redskins). Now that info ‘n a buck, might just get you a beer somewhere . . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Ok, time for my Saturday Encore submission, then I'm heading out to "the big top"!!

From the first page of this thread - posted by Cap'n Tom on the first of the year:

ENCORE! Saturday ‘n Photo Posting Day!

at "Our" Place!

We are CLOSED on SUNDAYs!

Starting Sunday at the Mentor Village Emporium Theatre!

. . . October 21st thru 27th: Horatio Hornblower - The Wrong War (1999) Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Robert Lindsay (II), Antony Sher, John Shrapnel & Samuel West - and - The Shadow Riders (1982) Starring: Tom Selleck; Sam Elliott; Ben Johnson; Geoffrey Lewis; Jeffrey Osterhage; Gene Evans & Katharine Ross. SHORT: The Three Stooges - Spook Louder (1943).

Horatio Hornblower - The Wrong War (1999)

PLOT SUMMARY:

Hornblower (Ioan Gruffuld) is called to take a company of British troops (which the sailors call lobsters because of their red coats) and a company of French nationalists (which are called frogs) to France to fight in the revolution. But Hornblower is horrified by the brutality of the French commander as he guillotines everyone in a village that destroyed his former home and his unwillingness to take part in the actual battles. However, when the commander and his men set out to rape and brutalize a young school teacher, Hornblower vows his protection of her.

<from: imdb.com>

NOTE: For the next couple of weeks at The Emporium Theatre one feature will be a Horatio Hornblower classic!

The Shadow Riders (1982)

PLOT SUMMARY:

When the Western slipped into theatrical oblivion in the late 1970s, many of the best examples of the genre began appearing as made-for-television films. After the success of The Sacketts, from the Louis L'Amour novel, producers quickly reunited stars Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott in another fine adaptation of a L'Amour book, The Shadow Riders. As brothers Mac and Dal Traven, sporting blue and gray uniforms, respectively, they wind their way home at the close of the Civil War to discover a band of confederate rebels have ravaged their town and kidnapped their sisters and brother and Dal's feisty sweetheart (Katharine Ross). With the help of their outlaw uncle (Western stalwart Ben Johnson), whom they must break out of prison, they track the guerrillas to the Gulf Coast and down into Mexico for a final, fatal showdown. Veteran director Andrew McLaglen sets this TV movie on a loping pace and a jovial tone, defined largely by Selleck's easygoing performance and the jocular comic relief of rascally Johnson. Elliott provides the intensity, at times positively ferocious under his heavy brows and burning, sunken eyes. The mood is occasionally too comic, but McLaglen delivers the goods in a series of gritty action sequences, proving that old Western directors don't die, they just drift on over to the small screen. Western icons R.G. Armstrong and Harry Carey Jr. and 1950s leading lady Jane Greer also appear in key roles. --Sean Axmaker

<from: amazon.com>

SHORT: Spook Louder (1943)

PLOT SUMMARY:

The short opens with Prof. J. O. Dunkfeather telling a reporter how he solved a mysterious case. The scene fades to the Stooges, who are three door-to-door peddlers trying to sell their "Miracle Reducing Machine." After several rejections and walking for miles, they come across the home of Mr. Graves, a mad scientist who has invented a new death ray ("It'll kill millions!"). Mr. Graves mistakes the Stooges for his new caretakers, and he leaves them to guard his home while he is in Washington. Three spies are out to steal Mr. Graves' plans, disguise themselves in Halloween costumes to scare the Stooges away, but some unseen hand keeps hurling pies at them. The Stooges end up confronting the spies, and Curly unintentionally blows them up with a bomb, at which point the Stooges are all hit with pies simultaneously. &qu

Well good evening folks.  have to say I almost feel railroadedLaugh [(-D] As passed back in forth with email to Tom I guess "I is back" to use a "Borisism"I see that Tom and Lars have both used trolley type posts the last couple of days to flush me out of the woodwork, seems like it worked that or the silk wrapped stone that one of Vito's boyz tossed through the bedroom window the other nightShock [:O]I actually just got back in from a night at our museum first of our two halloween night shows,we actully got a second PCC refurbished and runnin in less than a month to help handle the crowd an amazing feat even for our museum's workforce.

Well, another quiet and peaceful Sunday I see, I'll see if there's any cleaning needed done in here....Hmmm, all the brass fittings  and restrooms are relatively clean....pour some more smell good stuff in the sinks and puts new ones in the toilets. Need to top on the soap I see.....and paper.

Hmmm.....ahaa, two bulbs has passed on, better have them changed, walks to get the ladders and some new bulbs....oh dear the fixtures looks a wee bit dusty to me, no wonder, never did them last week... dust and clean the ceiling fixtures....cough...cough...does some  cursing.....there you go, not many left now.....now you can see what you're doing in here....

Ookeeey....better give all the tables and the bar a clean while it's quiet....rattle in the closet....it's good thing that I left the  stuff where anyone can find it...now some rags and we're back in business........

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

Who the......I see that the teenage years hasn't left some of our frequent visitors....chewing gum under the tables.....tsk..tsk..tsk....

The tables looks alright to me, so just a quick dust will do me thinks...Whistling [:-^]

Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

That's all the tables done, just as well do the bar and other wood fittings again I think, might be a good idea if I end up doing some more community service....Dunce [D)] I wonder how our mirrors look....I see, finger prints.....AGAIN! I mean, how close to you need to get to check if your hair is right....? There.... let's see.... brass etc. polished, restrooms has new air fresheners.....inhails....aaaahhh!Approve [^]

Better go and have a look around the walls to see what state our priceless art is in.....Whistling [:-^]

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Hmmm.......they're a bit dusty around the frames....better give them a dust as well I guess....

It's good to see that they had the impeccably good taste to put up some Milwaukee Road inspired art on the walls....they weren't known as the Resourceful Railroad for nothing...Approve [^]Whistling [:-^]

Maybe we should start an art club....? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Look a-yonder comin'
Comin' down that railroad track
Hey, look a-yonder comin'
Comin' down that railroad track
It's the Orange Blossom Special
Bringin' my baby back.....

Last one!

Give the front a sweep I think as well, the benches could do with a wash too...actually, I've got an idea....

Walks around the back and gets the hose....now we're talking.....washes of the benches and the front porch....Y-e-e-e-e-h-a-a!! Aaah, what the heck.....do the windows while at it...Whistling [:-^]

Well, I'm going down to Florida
And get some sand in my shoes
Or maybe Californy
And get some sand in my shoes
I'll ride that Orange Blossom Special
And lose these New York blues....

Riiiight, that's us done here.....

Heads back inside.....

"Say man, when you going back to Florida?"
"When am I goin' back to Florida? I don't know, don't reckon I ever will."
"Ain't you worried about getting your nourishment in New York?"
"Well, I don't care if I do-die-do-die-do-die-do-die."

I think that I'll go down to see what state the cellar is in.....

Gets the keys and walks down....nice and tidy still....good.Approve [^]

Hmmm....empty, full, half, full, empty, empty, full, empty, full, empty.....Whistling [:-^]

Changes the empty kegs....filles the paper in on the wall to make it up to date, darn! Bl**dy pen won't work.....shoot!....I'll leave a note on the bar that we need to order again...

No sweeping or anything needed down here....great!

Hey talk about a-ramblin'
She's the fastest train on the line
Talk about a-travellin'
She's the fastest train on the line
