There was a great letter in Steam Railway a while back, I cannot find the issue now, but the gist of the letter was about Private Woods VC. He was a foreman cleaner at an engine shed and the young engine cleaners did not give him a lot of respect until one day he arrived at the shed in a suit and it was the day the locomotive was named after him. After that the cleaners always addressed him as MR Woods.
There have been modern locomotives named after railwaymen who have been awarded the George Cross Britain's highest civilian honour, sadly some posthumously. Two that were named were Class 47 diesels in the 1970s, they were 47574 Benjamin Gimbert G.C. and 47579 James Nightall G.C. These brave men saved the Cambridgeshire town of Soham from great devastation when a wartime ammunition train caught fire, by detaching the burning wagon and hauling it clear of the town, where it exploded.
JAN Thanks for the top up and those winter pics. I hope the overhead power was still on as the locomotive crew could at least have some heating in the locomotive, although the power would be switched off while the locomotives were rescued, I would suppose.

Many thanks for the bookcovers and adverts. On the British Rail cover, at the time there were a lot of moans about the corporate blue and white every locomotive and coach was painted. Nowadays the stock and locos can be seen in many varied liveries. The loco is a class 86 locomotive, these were introduced in 1965/66 and there are a few still in use on intermodel freights. One class 86 has been privately preserved and returned to the main line for use on specials, it has been painted in BR blue as on the cover and some MK III coaching stock painted in the blue and white colours to match. It looks a fine sight.

Does being in charge at the weekend mean I have to do the ‘Admin Duties', I see the Penthouse is free as no one has won the Competition, and as I have the treat jars, what goes on in the Penthouse should stay in the Penthouse.
CM3 The LMS livery was a great livery After BR was formed the passenger locos of the ex LMS were painted in Brunswick Green, which suited the Duchesses as well. In the late 1950s some of the English based members of the class were painted in maroon, as in the picture. It should not be too long now before the Duchess that is being re fitted with a streamline casing is finished no doubt it will look stunning in its Maroon and gold stripe livery.
Back around 1980 the Midland Compound 4-4-0 was on the main line and on one trip it was paired with LMS Jubilee ‘Leander', the tour ran over the Settle & Carlisle line and the two LMS looked superb against a snowy background. The Compound was a loco I never get to ride behind as each time I booked to go on it the tour did not run, usually down to a high fire risk, and when it did run I was unable to go on the tours.

Eric: I enjoyed the pics of that beautiful trackwork, catenary and electric engine. I read that Sweden no longer manufactures railway engines, but gets them made in Finland and assembled in Sweden. I think (if memory serves me) they got six shovel noses and they didn't last too long in service. I will do some research on the subject.
Mike: Those baseball greats photos brought back fond memories. Baseball has never been the same with them gone. That's why I don't follow baseball much anymore. How did Hiawatha sneak in?
Tom: I did some research and came up with everything you wanted to know about the shovel noses. Read on.
In 1930, Man of Germany produced trains that ran successfully from Berlin to Hamburg and were called "Automotive train, Hamburg type". In 1938, Chile ordered six units, but due to the war in Europe, only two sets were delivered. In 1946, the other four units were finally delivered to be put into service during the 1947/1948 summer season. High cost of fuel, maintenance and rider-ship, caused service to be curtailed. In 1954, service was to begin again, but the introduction of more fuel friendly diesels, relegated the "Arrow-of-the-South" as they were called to secondary rail service. By 1960, the trains were taken out of service permanently due to their high maintenance and fuel costs. One of the biggest problems was the lack of spare parts. In 1980, the railway people discovered a cache of brand new spares for the trains, but it was now too late. The trains were now beyond repair. The specifications of the trains were: power by 2 Man diesels of 600 hp, 4 motors by AEG, a speed of 130km/hr, a capacity of 124, 1st class passengers. Track gauge was 1676 mm (65.5"). The time from Santiago to Puerto Montt, a distance of 1080 km 9900 miles) was 17 hours.
Since you are also a New York Central fan, here is a photo taken in Valpariso, Chile. Not to worry, those kids on top are playing on a display engine. I saw this engine when I was there last, but didn't take a picture. This shot is from the web.It was built by Alco with Westinghouse gear and looks similar to the NYC and NYNH&H engines except the platforms appear much longer and the headlight is located differently. Tom – Very few turbine locomotives were successful. There was one private railroad in Sweden who bought 3 turbine locmotives for their iron ore trains and they used those locmotives for many years. The first one was built 1930 and the other two 1936. All three have been preserved and one of them is still operational. Ron – I am afraid that you are correct about no more engines are being built in Sweden. ABB sold their Traction Division and Bombardier was the last one, as far as I know, who built any trains (EMUs) in Sweden. I have never seen anything like a shovelnose in Sweden. If you find out something else, please let me know! I finally found out about that electric locomotive (#64) you posted a picture of a couple of days ago. It is an old boxcab from Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway (BA&P) in Montana. They electrified their railroad in 1912 and run the first electric train in 1913. It was a very successful move by the railroad, owned by a copper mine. It was a 2400 V D.C. electrification and they bought 17 80 ton boxcabs. 15 of them were geared for freight and 2 were geared for passenger service (55 mph). Petrol up at "Collusion Corner" was $2.60 (rounded) yesterday . . . Temps made it to the century mark downtown and it was 98 (F) here. But of course adding that nonsense about "feels like" - then it was near 110. HOT by any other description. <ugh> Supposed to drop into the mid-80s over the weekend - then return to the 90s shortly thereafter. C'mon FALL!

Using your term, "back in the day" I longed for Lionel's GG1, but there was no way in Gawd's Green Earth that I'd ever get one. First off it was O-gauge ‘n my layout was O-27 - that monster wouldn't have negotiated my switches or curves. Secondly, it was so far out of my paperboy budget that to dream was the best I could do.
Glad you enjoyed the EMD ad . . . builder's plate was an add-on, only one I could find! Leave it to our WVA Oracle to come up with the oval vs. rectangular! But then again, it's good stuff to KNOW!

Anyone seen that latest "Bourne" flick I think the Cap'n mentioned it awhile back. We saw it last night ‘n it's really an action packed film. Aside from the not-so-subtle anti-US not-so-sublimal shots, it's a fast pace thriller, for sure. Recommend it - has some good European train shots too! The Bourne Ultimatum is the name - escaped me for the moment! <senior moment at that!>
We definitely want to be back home before the Labor Day weekend, so mid-week coming looks like departure time for us.

Color shot of the Scooter was excellent - look at the shoes, the glove, the heavy uniform - also check out how the base is anchored to the field - old school - gotta love it.
The picture of the "Joy Boys" was a good one. End of an era for sure.

OSP sent all sorts of SP&S material. We used to see carloads of lumber from them on the B&M branch at home.
BTW, I am considered to be a qualified SPF by some of my fellow NYC devotees.
Now about the buses. They have been a fixture at Glacier Park for years. There were 33 of them constructed by White between 1936 and 1939. They were rebuilt awhile back and are used to tour people on the Going to the Sun Road at Glacier National Park. JAN Many thanks for the great photos. It is a very scenic part of the world. It is good have they incorporated the Power Stations into the Railway Stations and they are still very attractive buildings.
Great close ups of the DM3 electric. That is an interesting wheel design on the locomotive.
ERIC Looking at the link to the turbine locomotives struck a cord in the memory. There was a Beyer- Ljungstrom turbine locomotive tried out by the LMS in the 1920s I have a link to it.

Thanks for the info on the electric locomotive in Ron's photo, I wonder if the 2,400V DC system was used much, it seems a high voltage for DC to me. I believe the highest DC voltage used in the UK was 1,500V DC.
I can remember the Jubilee class locomotives, like Leander, working through Rugby. There were a few of them allocated to Bushbury (Wolverhampton) loco depot and they worked expresses to London. These locos were usually in a very clean condition and they made a fine sight. There were some Jubilee class locos shedded at Rugby in the 1960s.

I will do this, as I don't want to happen to me that what happened to the Grizzly that got too near the fish boxes a while back. I'm afraid I was not too clear on the Duchess's. There are 3 preserved. The one in the photo is (4) 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. The one having the streamline casing fitted is 46229 Duchess of Hamilton, which masqueraded as 6220 Coronation on the tour of North America in 1939. The 3rd one is 46235 City Of Birmingham, which is in a museum in Birmingham. This loco was withdrawn from service and was repainted at Crewe Works and donated to the city. The other two Duchesses' are lucky to survive as they were bought and put on display at two of Sir Billy Butlin's Holiday Camps. 46229 is owned by the NRM and 6233 by after a spell at Bressingham in Norfolk, the loco is now run by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust .
Leanders wheels are 6'9" the same as the Duchesses, it seems a favorite size for the LMS express passenger locomotives.
TOM I was confused about what the Transport Liaison was. I though it was a group who met with UP and Amtrak to solve problems. Many thanks for giving me to info.
As you say, if they provide convenient trains and run them to time people will ride them. If I recall right, there was an advert at the station in Jeff City about a 2 for1 offer on the line in Missouri, but honestly until the service is a lot more reliable the offer is probably doing more damage than good. People, who don't use the train, take up the offer, arrive back very late vowing never to use the train again.
I the UK now the trains are very popular again I hear a lot of the companies are hiking up the fares increases above inflation, perhaps DL, when he is back,can let us know more about this

Howdy Tom and all at the bar. Drinks for all and a quicky for me, as I can't stay long. I just wanted to tell CM3 that I got the DD-1 material in the mail and thank you. It has all the information I was seeking.
All: The weather is still hot and is projected for many more days. Thank God for air conditioning. I try to work in my shop, but one hour is about all I can take, despite the A/C in the shop.

Latest NZ railways news: Toll is re-equiping it`s main passenger trains with BR Mk2 coaching stock over the next year, The Overlander, The TranzSenic and The TranzAlpine, the old coaches were from the 1930`s, upgraded at times of course. While in Auckland saw a couple of "push pull" passenger trains on metro rail services, they are in the process of double tracking the main metro lines, a big job! Wellington Metro rail has been given NZ$500m by the NZ government to upgrade the rail system, must want all those Public Servants to arrive at work on time!

I just found out that they became a part of Burlington Northern 1970!The picture of the X2000 and the ICE at Penn Station shows the only time those two trains were at the same platform. Amtrak tried to avoid to run them at the same time, but August 11, 1993 it happened. X2000 was running in revenue service and the ICE was on a demo trip from Washington to New York City and back. Pete’s book looks interesting. Reminds me about how close it was I was sent to British Rail in the late 80’s. Count me in, I’ll send you an email later today. Interesting books about SP&S! I spent a number of days in Spokane in 1984 but never saw any trains. The last one is a DVD about SP&S #700, a 4-8-4built 1938. It’s an oil burner and is still operational today as far as I know. See link.

At Ballybrophy on the trip back from Limerick, hauled by the diesels shown. With the rather distnctive gates that are in seen around this part of Ireland.

Mullingar is the junction for the line to Sligo. 'Jeep' 2-6-4T has brought the train in from Dublin and the two diesels will take the train to Sligo.

Class Y-6b 2-8-8-2 #2132, NB, Shenandoah, VA 12/16/1956. This is now on the I-81 corridor of NS and in the late 1950s the through freights and coal jobs went to the class Y-6b.
By 1959 leased ACL E-units had bumped the Js from the passenger jobs and this was the result. Here the 610 switches the Grey Lumber industry track in Waverly on 3/7/1959.
Class J 4-8-4 #611 with the early morning Roanoke train at Norfolk Union Station circa 1957. Both the Virginian and the original Norfolk Southern used this station, though by the 50s the NS was long gone. Today the station is gone and the real estate totally given over to the I-264 bridge network as it splits to Portsmouth, Water Street, and Tideater Drive.
Class A 2-6-6-4 #1218 by MP 71 hustling hoppers of export coal east to Lamberts Point in 1957.
Class Y3 2-8-8-2 #2043, Portlock Yard, South Norfolk, 3/3/1957. The older Y class power had by the late 1950s been relegated to switching the Lamberts Point docks and support yards like Portlock.
2043, the same day and place.
2120 was the first Y6 in 1936. When built, they were equipped with cast steel beds and roller bearings.
2156 is the only survivor of the Y6a class of 1942. You can see this locomotive in the St Louis Museum of Transportation, MO. The 1942 batch were designated class Y6a.
2171 takes pride of place in the sunshine for the offical company portrait, the first class Y6b in 1948.
2175 was built 1948 at Roanoke. Here she is in the lubritorium at Shaffer's Crossing locomotive servicing facility. If you take a close look, you will see the large square ducting in the roof of the shed, designed to catch the smoke and soot.

Liked the CN ad with the drum heads too. Seems that CP must've had the "lock" on the named trains. For some reason, I always think of CP as the "premier" hauler of passengers on the rails in days gone by.

PLOT SUMMARY: While Rusty Williams is away at Agricultural College, his prospector cousin Shorty (Moe Howard) fills in at Rusty's struggling Reno NV spread as the ranch foreman. He spends his time looking for an angle at the Wagon Wheel Cafe Casino, and hooks up with two vagrants (Curly Howard, Larry Fine) after they accidentally win big at roulette. Along with two stranded New York singers and their money, the Stooges and the girls head for the ranch with prospecting plans. Rusty returns home with hope that investor Sam Clemens will save the ranch's cattle and mining operations, and finds Shorty and the gang's plans interfering. Complicating matters further, inept ranchhands (The Hoosier Hotshots) mistake Clemens for a cattle rustler, and Shorty, Curly & Larry cook up a scheme to get the girls an audition with a vacationing Broadway producer.The Hoosier Hotshots were comedic musicians, but, unlike Spike Jones' orchestra, the HH's country-swing music never hit mainstream playlists and they are relatively unknown today. Great coverage of the Uncle Pete's business car fleet, ironic to think that in the early eighties UP disposed of all but one E9, all dome cars and a good percentage of the coach fleet only to see the folly of this business decision several years later which required a greater investement to replace what was once their's! Even the steam program was in doubt during this period.
Congrats Pete on the 2,000th post, that's a enormous amount of content compiled by the folks at "Our Place" Good job with Irish Rail, I assumed most rails lines there were abandoned long ago, refreshing to be shown the ignorance of my ways.

Glad you enjoyed the Rugby to Scotland trip and thanks for the kind words. I have done my ‘Named locomotives of the LNER' and I shall post it next week. It would be great if you could add some comments, me being from the mainly LMS part.
I think you should be getting some good cars in NZ with those MK IIs. To me those MKII first class compartments were the most comfortable, not counting Pullmans etc that ran in BR days.

One turbine locomotive that was fairly successful was the LMS ‘Turbomotive' which ran regularly in the pre-war years between London and Liverpool. It was numbered in the Princess Royal class as 6202. After the war it was rebuilt with a Duchess boiler but with the smaller wheels of the Princess Royals. In the rebuilt form 6202 had sadly a very short career as the loco was wrecked in the Harrow & Wealdstone disaster of 1952 which claimed 112 lives on a foggy morning on the outskirts of London.

JAN Many thanks for those wonderful photos of those great steam locomotives. I guess with the last Y6b being built in 1952 the class had nowhere near the years in service they should have had, before diesels took over.
LARS Free beer for me so I get everyone else's, fair enough I suppose. I was going to tell you when you got back, but when I was giving TEX his brine treat my bar tab fell in it and he ate it, so I guess we had better start from scratch with a new one.
Many thanks for those great UP car photo encore. It reminded me of the photos I took when some of the cars were in Jeff city earlier this year. They were on a 35mm disc but I cannot get them into my photo album, I will try again when I post this.

Like the UK Ireland did lose a lot of their lines in the 1950s and 60s, although some lines were not ripped up as in the UK and there is a chance some may re-open as Ireland is spending a good deal of money on there rail system at the present, with new units and the are even quadrupling a line out of Dublin.

Really enjoying the Alaska trip photos, I do hope the folks at the bar enlarge them. That is a great pic of the locos through the dome and I noticed how clean the platform was at Fairbanks station. I see two of the locos in the loco depot have a different livery, I wonder if this was an earlier version of the livery of the locos hauling the train or whether that is the freight livery for locomotives.

Hey! I fully comprehend your point. Just some times when I'm looking at who is logged in, I get chagrined at some of the cyber names from guys who are UTBs (used to be) - but it really becomes puzzling when I see a supportive guy, ‘n there's no visit. Anyway, you're forgiven - just as long as you've got the "coin" to support our bar habits!
While we're not a hobby site - we do engage in the "talk." I finally ventured into S gauge with the construction of my S-Capades suspended from the ceiling layout. I ALWAYS loved the size of those trains ‘n would've preferred to have had my Can-Am layout in that scale. HOWEVER, as we both know, it's darned near impossible to find the road names, types of locos ‘n rolling stock to put together that which one has in mind. For me, I wanted VIA Rail passenger cars , RDCs ‘n locos (non-existent in S) - Amtrak passenger cars ‘n locos (very, very limited) - BC Rail RDCs (non-existent) and CN/CP locos. All readily available in HO AND representative of the period being modeled - 1990s to present time.
The kicker of course was ‘n remains price. I put out quite a bit of the retired fortune for that HO spread of mine. Had it been done in S - my guess is that I would've spent at least 3 times as much IF the stuff had have been available, and Lawd knows how much for custom "stuff."
So, I settled for a small layout with 3 trains to run. Lotsa switching, lotsafun - and it all looks ‘n runs great. MoPac ‘n Illinois Central for the 1950s era. Was really lucky to find two roads to "fit together" in a period modeled layout. Love it!

Good question regarding the ARR livery. Honestly don't know. However, I did note some differences even with the models. So perhaps what I captured in my fotos was indeed a spate of those differences - over the years. Doubt that ARR had any passenger vs. freight livery. Eagle Eye Pete strikes again!
