The Cast of Characters from ”Our” Place

siberianmo Tom is the Proprietor and head bartender. [4:-)][oX)]

Theodorebear Ted is the Manager.

nickinwestwales Nick is Chief Chef. [C=:-)]

trolleyboy Rob is the Bar Chandler.

Boris is - well, he’s Boris who works in the kitchen and anywhere else needed. He was hired by Nick, Chief Chef and is assistant cook. He’s not too hard to spot, as Boris is not of this world. Kinda difficult to maintain eye contact with him. He’s playful and unaware of his strength. We do not permit him to tend bar – however, he loves to ring the bell when a round is purchased.

Tex the Armadillo is Boris’ pet!

Awk the Parrot is Tom's pet!

Leon the Night Man is Tom’s relief behind the bar around 9 PM or so, Central Time. He closes up. He’s easily recognized by his rather large size, enormous hands, and shiny brand new Jump Boots. Leon also serves as Doorman and Bouncer for special events and may be seen in a tuxedo – with Jump Boots of course.

Inspector Clueless of the Local Constabulary and his earstwhile friend and companion Mr. Doyle, Private Investigator make up the security force ‘round here.

The Gals of “Our Place” are:

Ruth the redhead – Ann the blonde – Lucy the brunette and Jemima the raven haired beauty. These gals were found and hired by Tom and named by Nick. They work evenings, pretty much anywhere in the place, Thursday thru Saturday, and special events. Look, but don’t touch – at least not while on duty!

Then there’s Cindy with the auburn hair. She’s a faculty member from the Mentor Village all female University – right up the road. She’s not paid, but loves to volunteer her services either behind the bar – for me – or in the kitchen, with Nick. She’s also active in the local Victoria’s Secret lingerie shows …….

Then of course, there are all of YOU!

Tom, Proprietor of "Our" Place, an adult eating & drinking establishment!

Good Morning!

A couple of responses are in order before we set about our day here at "Our" Place:

rrandb Richard (RR) (none) Posted: 28 Dec 2005, 23:13:10

As you may have already determined, those of us at this bar 'n grill who constitute the "regulars" are comfortable with one another to where we use first names. Thanx for yours. We respect each patron's desire for privacy. However, given that the majority of our "profiles" are open for inspection by one and all, it does seem a bit skewed. Our Birthday Watch List! reveals the ages of the majority of our customers, so that "carding" is unnecessary. We insist on adult patronage in that what we do and say 'round here is geared more for experience than not.

Highly recommend you take advantage of the info provided on this page, if for no other reason than to acquaint you with the way things are done 'round here. Again, good to have another friendly face at the bar. Although your hours may not be at all conducive to the interaction we seek, nor will you find the place open much after mid-night or 1 AM.

I will Post a couple of other "features" that are designed to help you get up to speed ... watch for 'em!

Theodorebear Ted Posted: 29 Dec 2005, 08:09:18

That's quite a URL on the Times Square Ball and it brings back memories from several galas past. I never really enjoyed the mob scene, but the parties at the hotels were great! Unfortunately, in those days, I was simply a poor sailor lad, making a paltry sum.

The Mentor Village Emporium will celebrate it's Grand re-opening with a DOUBLE FEATURE and a stage show in between! I have the movies pre-selected for the next several months, but recommendations are always welcome! Perhaps you can help us with some "acts" and of course an orchestra for this event. We are looking for a January 9th re-opening! [tup]

Later!

Good Morning you oily boids what catches da woims.[#oops] I thought I was back in Times Square for a moment.[(-D] Tom, just as cuppa Joe anna "lead sinker" with cream cheese, please. Pete, the URL from Tom's post says it all on the Times Square electric Ball. Over the years, the tradition has grown to what has become an audience of a billion people viewing it.[:O] Personally, I think Big Ben's tolling makes more sense.[^] Hey Rob, great to have those traction Encores back again. I don't think KCity would be the only city lines with the "bridge" available. However, It may have proven to be an impracticle solution, not sure. I saw it used only once. "Seems Like Old Times" (Arthur Godfrey's theme song 1940's and '50s' radio and T.V.).

Is it only me or has anyone else noticed a distinct echo effect in the bar lately?[swg] Seriously, I need to get the car serviced today and run more errands around town. No time to catch a flick at the old/new M.V. Emporium Theatre.[V] Maybe they will feature the Burt Lancaster flick "The Train," someday. Well Boris, give old 101 a ring, the round is on me this morning. FWOP, Gadfrey, this time it's the mop he uses.[:(!] Happy rails folks.

Hate to "waste" a welcome, for the overwhelming majority of times that we have visitors with hardly anything at all in their Profiles do we see repeat visits. But here goes! [#welcome] Aboard and hope you enjoy this adult bar 'n grill. [tup] Must be of legal age to drink and sit at this bar.

If you have checked us out by reading all of page one and then scrolled through the last ten or so, you should have a good idea of how this place operates and what we are all about. The answer to your question surely should be evident.

As a new customer, the first drink is on the house! Enjoy. We have a couple of major rules that are followed 'round here: (1) Always greet the bartender upon entering -and- (2) Always order a drink and/or food on each visit.

There are protocals to follow as well, but I'm tired - it's late - and it's best you figure out the rest. We are an inclusive thread with acknowledgments made to one another. Hit 'n run Postings from anyone, regardless of how long they have been associated with us will be ignored. Take it somewhere else - unwelcome here. [tdn]

We engage in adult banter at the bar and cater to those with the knowledge and willingness to discuss Classic Trains - real and model - while having some fun doing it.

The ONLY way you will know what's going on 'round here is to read the SUMMARIES and stay up on the pages. Otherwise, you will find yourself way behind and perhaps have no one to talk to!

Okay [?] Hope to see you again, and perhaps get a "name" and some personal info about you and your interests relating to what we do here.

That's it for me, Gents! [zzz]

(1)I am old enough you wouldn't card me( 2)Whats in my profile is exactly what I want it to be. ( 3)My name is richard but you may use my initials RR (4) I work thru the I.A.T.S.E. union. I will delete my bio once you acknowlege this post. Thank you in addvance. P.S> I drink JW BLUE LABEL scotch but not tonight. [|)]

. . . . . . . . . . ENCORE! ENCORE! . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . Posted several times on past pages . . . . . . . .

This is a rundown of what ”Our” Place is all about. It is Posted simply to create a central URL for reference purposes later on as new customers enter our cyber bar ‘n grill. (We don’t’ use the term “Newbies” ‘round here!)

I recognize that this is a LONG list to read – but if you want to know about us without having to research all of the previous pages, this is a good compilation to go by. [tup]

1. This is a cyber bar ‘n grill for adults who appreciate Classic Trains – real and model – and enjoy a bit of humor while discussing them.

2. This thread was started as an alternative to those where hit ‘n run postings are the norm. Here, we strive to be inclusive with all who participate as regulars. There will be those who stop by to check us out and they will receive an appropriate [#welcome] from the Proprietor along with encouragement to join us. Keep in mind, this is not the typical thread seen elsewhere. One has to earn a regular place at this bar.

3. To be a regular all one needs to remember is to participate and contribute to the topic on a regular basis.

4. We have a Birthday Watch List for all regulars. To sign up, just provide your birth date (month-date-year). We’ll schedule a cyber Birthday Bash for you on the day of your choice.

5. We have an Order of the Stools Club whereby regular customers of the bar receive recognition as either permanent or reserved holders of ”Our” Place bar stools.

6. We feature SUMMARIES of postings by our customers. They are provided to help with catching up on periods of absence. They also contain relevant information at the beginning for all customers along with a News segment.

7. The bar is CLOSED on Sunday and Christmas Day. However, submissions may be dropped off in the mail slots on either set of front doors.

8. Posting of pictures is reserved for Sunday Photo Posting Day!. Posting on other days is discouraged and viewed as counter productive to what we are trying to maintain.

9. We discourage the Posting of “signatures” that are longer than the Posts! Additionally, repetitive Postings on a given topic should NOT include the “signature” photo or graphic. Keep in mid that this is what slows down the process of bringing up the screens, not to mention the “memory” requirements for the host – Kalmbach. Let’s be considerate!

10. We have two basic rules that must be followed: (1) Greet the bartender when arriving – and – (2) Order a drink! Of course, adherence to tolerance for the other guy’s point of view and avoidance of hot button issues like politics and religion are paramount.

11. The Proprietor of “Our” Place only asks that you enjoy yourself while here, but requests that before posting information, take the time to catch up with what you may have missed. To do otherwise turns this thread into what we’ve been trying to avoid.

What's that noise (again) [?] Well, well, some Posts to read from our late night visitors! [tup]

pwolfe Pete Posted: 28 Dec 2005, 22:51:33

You must be referring to the old Mentor Village Emporium which is undergoing renovation for the Grand Re-Opening in January. A theatre of elegance and grace, where smoking used to be permitted in the balcony, along with all sorts of other activities while the flick was flickering! [swg] So, in answer to your inquiry, yes - we do have a movie theatre! Stand by for the listings of films to come. [swg][tup]

Thanx for the contribution to the Coal Scuttle! [tup]

Yes, it has been a grand day here at the bar 'n grill and it would appear that this week has fooled me from the get-go. With just a couple of days left, we'll still hang on to the theme for the week, though. Gives a chance to dust off some of those great nostalgia, fallen flags and other special Posts for an ENCORE! run. [tup]

Check out this URL regarding the lowering of the ball on New Years Eve in Times Square, New York City: http://www.timessquarenyc.org/nye/nye_history.html

Don't fret regarding the Mentor Village Gazette's next edition, it will be here for you upon your return from England! [tup]

By the by - why not try to getaway just a half hour earlier on Friday - that way you can have time to check out the Can-Am trainroom before we head off to the airport [?] A thought. <grin>

trolleyboy Rob Posted: 28 Dec 2005, 22:58:10

I see you are back in the saddle, so to speak! [swg] Three Posts and it's just like old times! [tup]

Board games at our Rendezvous in Toronto[?] Hmmmmmmmm. Wasn't quite what I had in mind, but whatever floats your boat, Mate! [swg]

Nice ENCORE! on the CNR Steam #1. Perhaps you would be wise to rerun that Index of yours sometime next week - again, we don't have our cast of regulars around and I seriously doubt with all of these pages that have been amassed, that anything new will be picked up. Your choice - just a recommendation. Hate to see anyone waste such a fine effort. [tup]

Slowness on the Forums has more to do with the number of photographs and graphics being downloaded at the time one checks in along with whatever the condition of one's computer. Many variables - too many in fact for me to list.

At the time you checked in, this bar 'n grill was CLOSED. Sorry.

I will borrow some explinations from Ian Wilson's Steam at Allandale for the technical help. [tup]

So Classic CNR Steam #1 The Huntsville Subdivision

The Huntsville subdivision ran ( still runs ) through central Ontario in the Muskoka lakes district. It is a 111 mile subdivision running from Huntsville through to it's Northern terminus of North Bay.And down to it's southern terminus of Gravenhurst.

The local switching was done three times a week. These originated in North Bay on mon, wed, and fri.laying over in South River, and returning on alternate days. The Southern trains also operated three days a week starting at South River to Gravenhurst same three days a week will the layover at scotia ontario, and returning on alternate days.

John Good to see you back again, thanks for the clarifivcation on the ship terminology, something I did not know, mind you Canadian Naval tradition and history( yes we do have one ) has always been my thing. Hopefully you have a good new years while you plod back and forth on the Pacific.

Ted ouch that example of the before and after on a wooden car is exactly why the steel beast finally becmae dominent. Too many times one see's haw wooden cars ( regular passenger and interurban ) could telescope and collapse under the preassures of a major impact.I'm glad that yopu were able to enjoy the second time around on the safety cars, I think you may have been ill or dodging a storm when I had first posted it.

Backing with any pole is dangerous in that you cannot do full speed in reverse, they are flexible just not that flexible if you know what I mean.easier to do with a slider shoe as oposed to an old trolley wheel as well( less friction ) and less sparks. I had not heard or ever seen the hose clearing gizmo you speak of. Perhaps a KC thing only. I remeber a recent 5 alarm fore on Queen street in Toronto had the streecars halted till it was out. Some due to the fact that Toronto Police had the street blocked but possibly for lack of said track gizmo.

Back shortly with another encore. Rob

PS
Pete Hi how are you? Actually I have not read the article, I don't buy trains. However if they have the article online I will puruse it, thank you [tup] I had fixed some of the worst spelling mistakes on that reroll of the juice, glad you enjoyedhelping number 2.

Tom I hadn't thought about bringing any board games to Toronto in May,maybe I should. Aousing round of Risk anyone ?

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please and I'll add a couple of quarters to the Coal Scuttle.

A good day at the bar.

Thanks JOHN for the USNS info and the New Year wishes[tup].

ROB Good to see you after Christmas and thanks for the encore well worth reading again. Did you manage to see the article in the January issue of TRAINS mag on the demise of the Minneapolis-St Paul Streetcars [?].A very well written article.

TED Great posts[tup]. I was wondering if you knew where the tradition of the lowering of a ball at midnight on New Years Eve originated [?].In England at parties and pubs etc. they generally play the chimes of Big-Ben as it strikes midnight.

TOM Thanks for the Fallen Flag encore and the link to the film[tup]. Does the Mentor Village have a cinema[?].Perhaps we could get them to play Classic movies with classic trains in them and get them to advertise in the Gazette. There were quite a few films with railways in them in the U.K. One of the most well known was the Ealing Studios film "The Titlfield Thunderbolt" about local residents taking over and running a branch line in the 1950s. It featured the mid 19th century 0-4-0 loco LION.
Its a shame I shall miss the next Gazette straight off the press but I will catch it as soon as I can.

I,ll have a Bathams as a nightcap then [zzz] PETE.

Just a word before turning over the bar to Leon the Night Man and then checking out ... thanx for the Post, Manager Ted! [tup]

Lots to think about and of course, a rousing four-handed game always fits the bill! [swg]
I have a joke about that, which will be more appropriate for our Rendezvous in Toronto! [swg]

Honorary titles, eh [?] Perhaps two should be in order, one for the incentive and the other for knotting the knickers! Some guys surely need the latter. But then again, I've always been "bad cop" - even in my career. A good fit. <grin> I'll give it some thought - but not this nite ...... [zzz] Long day, lots of Posts and it's time for something else.

Staff party with the Gals of "Our" Place along with the cast of characters ranging from Cindy to Tex the Armadillo and now I see, Hilda 'n Helga have become part of the "family." Why not! [?] [swg]

Thanx for the nite cap visit. [tup] But what, no drink for me [?]

Until the 'morrow .......

Hi Tom, I think just a "night cap" of Blackberry Brandy "straight up, please." I normally would've just taken a peek since my last post and after seeing only one post, "call it a day." "Staff Party," let's see...how's 'bout just Rob, yourslef, Nick and me play the gals in a double game of Monopoly? There are many other games, of course, but my sense of proper deportment preculde any mention of them.[:O]

Yes, all preparations on the management side for CM3's Birthday Bash on the 6th are under way as we speak. Due to the many folks still deluding themselves' with previously made preposterous New Years resolutions, perhaps we should remain on the conservative side. Say, something along the lines of a Las Vegas Matinee at "Our" Place? As I recall, Vito still has all the gaming paraphernalia available at a moments notice. The gals, have their [ahem] abreviated costumes from past "cake parties," and the News Year's Eve decending "Electric Ball" will already be in place. As always, Rob will have the local Constbulary involved with the help of Helga, Hilda and Leon "in position" for security. I'm sure [C=:-)] Nick will, no doubt, have "finger foods" and Canopes planned worthy of our resident "Bard." So, with these thoughts in mind, all suggestions from our esteemed Members will be welcomed for further consideration.

Okay, this has been a casual visit and beginning January 2nd, I'll try to bring more "on topic" contributions to the table. Let's look forward to some innovative new horizons for 2006 at "Our" Place. I'm thinking of insintives for making member's "interaction" more rewarding and motivated than previously experienced. That is, without falling into the personal "prattle" which is better left to other "gossip" venues found all over these Forums. Maybe a gratuitous, "chit" toward a honorary "Title" at the end of each month for each "inclusive" post the indivdual submits would work? The person with the greater amount of 'chits' acquired at month's end, wins the 'Title.' Maybe not? Any rate, let's give this "angle" some thought between now and the Second of January. Stay well and happy, 'til next time.[tup]

Evenin’ Guys!

The ending of this day has turned out far better than the start. The rains have ended, the temps have fallen, and it feels a bit more like the season we are in.

Some observations for today:

A regular and a member of our Permanent Stools, who we have not seen for a couple or more days, has Posted elsewhere and on the same Forum as our thread! The issue isn’t Posting elsewhere, it’s not Posting here at all. What’s that all about [?]

A customer wonders aloud what it is I want him to do with regard to Posting. My thoughts are quite elementary when it comes to support for this bar ‘n grill – there are 204 pages of information – it got there through the willingness of many and the dedication of others to keep things moving forward. What do I want [?] Nothing more than support for the idea that we are NOT like the other threads and will NOT become like them. Mine is not to chase anyone away, unless those individuals show reason – then the option I have is to spend less time with those folks and more time with the ones who care. Simple approach, I’d say.

A reminder: We are CLOSED on NEW YEAR’s DaY with no Sunday Pix Posting until the following week – January 8th.

To the acknowledgments:

Back again! [tup] Not so difficult to find the words sometimes as it is to find the time. Appreciate your business!

The round is appreciated – Boris rang that bell hours ago – nearly woke everyone up! [swg] Buffalo burgers – nope. We feature one thing on our lunch menu all week- the best sandwiches one can find in the County. Served on the freshest breads from The Mentor Village Bakery we use only the best cuts of lunch meats for our hero, submarine, grinder and hoagie sandwiches. The pickles from the barrel over there are absolutely “crunchy” and hard to beat, as are the rest of the condiments next to it. [tup]

I cannot speak with authority on this, for I never really got the “straight skinny” from my father about his WWII experiences. As a “Merchie” he was gone for the duration of the war – from start to finish. He shipped out of ports all along the east coast and I don’t recall seeing him during those four years. If I did, the memory is long gone. He steamed the Murmansk run, experienced being torpedoed along with being blown off a bridge wing in the North Sea, shortly after war’s end, when his freighter struck a mine. How long were his voyages ?] Far too long for a kid waiting at home. Made all of my sea experiences somewhat trivial by comparison to what he and his counterparts encountered. Oh [yeah], he was a Mate and remained a 1st Mate far after war’s end. For whatever the reason, he never sat for the Masters license. Again, have no clue as to why. Guess he probably found his niche in life, which isn’t all that bad for any of us. I found mine as well.

Staff Party, suggested by one Sir Nick in his post-Christmas missive the other night. I yield to the three of you, who we refer to as “staff” to plan away. Proprietor’s privilege! [swg]

To reiterate, I have logged on and off today, perhaps a dozen times and each time with no problems whatsoever. Now, that tells me a thing or two regarding those of you who are having some delays. Have you performed your “routine” maintenance items for your hard disk, etc. [?] You’d be amazed at how much “junk” accumulates in the assorted “caches” in “temp files” that once deleted, rejuvenate your computer. That plus the various scans available in the “Accessories” menu in “Programs” will also help. Having said that (again) I will defer to a probability – that being more people accessing the Forums over the holiday period for an assortment of reasons. However, if one’s computer is “clean” and ready to go, those delays are so minimal as to not notice at all. End of “free” advice.

I have moved up the publication date for the next edition for the Mentor Village Gazette to January 2nd. Watch for it! [swg] I would still like some input from those of you expressing interest in this newspaper feature. Just ship me an Email] with your thoughts …….

As has been the practice ‘round here, Birthday Bash! extravaganzas were under the purview of our Chief Chef [C=:-)], Nick from the times before having a Manager Work it out, Gentlemen, for we now have a staff of three – surely we can get something squared away for CM3 for Friday, January 6th. [tup] In case anyone has missed it, he has requested the festivities to be held during the morning/afternoon.

I haven’t pressed for any of our “normal” activities for this week or last, figuring light attendance, etc. Once we get to January 2nd, it will be resumption of business, including things like Pike Perspectives DayFisn ‘n Chips Nite and Steak ‘n Fries Nite.

Hmmmmm, getting “chummy” with Vito the Hit! could be hazardous to your health! [:O]

Later!

G'Day Members and guests. Tom, please make it a Hot Buttered Rum in one of those great copper mugs.[^] Hey, the Milwaukee Road Encore is timely indeed after Trainnut referred us to the vintage Flick melodrama.[tup] Hmmm, did I notice a "touch" of sardonic wit eminatting from the "other side" of the bar? Love it...just love it Tom.[:D] Glad to see just about everyone came through relatively undamaged physically, if not fiscally.[V] Now, some may be saying to themselves: Gadfrey, that Theodorebear will do anything for a laugh.[:O] Well, you are 100% on that "take."[tup] When an "Old Country" Doc (Gemany) told me that laughter is a better tonic than anything created "by the hand of man," I obediently jumped up in the air, clicked my heels and replied: Jawohl mein Fuhrer![(-D]

Let's see, ah yes Rob, thanks for the answer on the P.C.C.s. I thought reversing with the trolly pole "in place," could easily damage the pole. I knew there had to be a reverse somewhere, just never noticed the control next to the motoman, I guess. BTW, do you recall "bridge" railers festooned from the older car's under frame? They were a piece of standard sized rail conformed to a slow arch with an open space in the center. They were used more than once (as I recall) when fire hoses were strung across the car tracks while firemen battled the blaze. I remember the motoman (KCity) issuing some muffled expilitives (under his breath) when he had to bounce the thing loose and place it over the hoses. Also, the primary material for the older cars truly was of wooden construction. I found out "first hand" in a very tragic way when one of the Interurbans from Sand Springs, OK to Tulsa collided with a cement mixing truck near New Block Station. The Motorman was killed instantly and several passengers were injured. Rob the whole front end of the car was a mass of splintered lumber jutting out as if in a poorely stacked cord in a lumber yard. Just awful![xx(] From then on, I had a different view of the invincibility of those fast "steel" cars. Thanks for the "rerun." I somehow missed it the first "go 'round."[tup]

So you see? These [i]Encores[bi] have a positive value for sure.[tup] Likewise, I had trouble loging on this P.M. also. Had to repeat 4 times before my password was accepted. I'm guessing that it is the "recess" scool traffic causing some delays, as other have mentioned before.[banghead] AHOY jlampke John, "shiver me timbers" and all that other "sure fire" maritime dialogue. Glad to see yer still "out and about." I met some of the nicest folks to date while "on tour" and in Portland, OR. This was in the early "60s" and the Proprietor of a downtown LHS invited a couple of us to see the Portland Model R.R. Engineers HO model Pike. I remember it was really an elaborate and large operation. If that wasn't enough, we were invited to a impromtu party at the Owner's house that evening for B.B.Q and great chats with other members of this Club.[^] That doesn't happen very often while "living out of a suitcase" for weeks at a time. Anyhow, it was a courtesy that I'll neve forget.[tup] This being Wednesday and "Pike Perspectives Day," I thought I would "throw that up for grabs." BTW, the more I get into the "refurb" of my HO layout, the more I want to change a host of past efforts. Gadfrey, at this rate, it will be next X-mas before I'm "up and runnng" again.[:O]

Okay, I know I'll miss something in this synopsis but that is the stuff of future posts, now isn't it? The Gazette venue hasn't gone by unoticed. Just haven't hit upon a fitting news worthy item. Of course, I'm more than a little concerned over the "impact" a new shopping Mall will have on Mentor Village's homeyness (?). January the 6th it is for our next [bday] Bash and still anticipating more input on the New Year's Staff Party. Maybe Nick, Tom and Rob will have some thoughts on this? Good old Boris, at the ready with lanyard in his "hot webbed hand."[alien] Well forget it until I get a check cashed at the Second Natnl. Bank. Vito owes me a favo(u)r since that last Rum Pizza run I made for him over by Windsor, don'tcha know. Happy rails all.

Afternoon Tom. Just jumping in here for a quick look during my lunch break. Remember; I'm on "Left Coast" time here.... Work hours, I better take it easy... Make mine a single Absolute for now. Does Our Place serve buffalo hamburgers? A round for the boyz too.........

For P; Sure wish I could trade jobs with you! Is it possible to get cab rides anymore?

Several pages back, you made a reference to long trips...... I've seen more than a few of those myself through the years. One I read of from WW2 that is notable though; At one point during the war in the Pacific the USS Hornet (CV-12) went for an entire 18 month period without tying up to a pier. They did anchor at Ulithi a few times during the course of that deployment. (Been there. Nothing there.)

More later........... John

G'day!

. . . . . . . . . . ENCORE! ENCORE! . . . . . . . . . .

A true story about Awk while staying at Cindy’s place. (previously Posted on page 136)

Cindy’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check."

"Oh, by the way don't worry about my bulldog, Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!" "I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Cindy’s apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled,

"Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!"

To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

Enoy (again)!

G'day P

Just cannot get it, eh [?] Tweeeeets are for the regulars AND those occupying red stools! [swg]

Guess what I saw [?] A string of Budd stainless steel 85 ft passenger cars all in Canadian Pacific livery w/beaver heralds. But alas, it was too dark to get a look at them! <geesh!>

So that's it [?] Nothing more to say [?] Perhaps THIS is your ENCORE! piece - more of the SAME!

Welcome back, I think.[%-)]

Mornin’ Gents!

A rainy start to this Wednesday in mid-continent USA as a cold front descends upon us, chasing away those 50 (F) temps. Lots of rain forecast, but alas, no snow. <yuck> Petrol up at “Collusion Corner” was $2.08 (rounded) yesterday. Appears that we may have seen the last of the under two bucks per gallon gasoline. Add that to the escalating costs of simply keeping it on the track, and there’s one thing that comes to mind. I’m ever thankful for being able to pay the bills. The alternative is unthinkable. [tdn]

A reminder: We are CLOSED on NEW YEAR’s DAY with no Sunday Pix Posting until the following week – January 8th.

This week has turned out to be quite a surprise regarding the number of guys Posting. We still have several regulars absent – but accounted for. Come Monday, January 2nd, I would expect our normal order of business to resume. Until then, ENCORE! Posts are encouraged. [tup]

To the acknowledgments:

Hey John! I received all of your Emails as you most probably know, and it’s good to see you putting your thoughts together for a Post here. [tup][tup]

Good tune selections and they are all on the Juke called Herr Wurlitzer! 5 plays for a quarter can’t be topped these days, wouldn’t you agree [?] Thanx for the $$$ for our Coal Scuttle, which of course was known as the Pickled Pig’s Feet jar! Sounds a bit more “refined,” doesn’t it [?] [swg]

My time in Oregon goes back to the 80s and I really loved it there. Spent a bit of time in Eugene and the surrounding area on personal business – really a great spot. Then of course the coastline – amazing rock formations. Also flew with the Oregon National Guard pretty much all over the state, a very diverse place indeed. Politics [?] Not to my liking. Attitudes [?] Reminded me of a few places I lived in and near up in New England. Again, not my cuppa tea. My bride and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary out that way – with five days in the Seattle area and 5 in Portland. We must have lucked out, for the entire trip was beneath clear skies with wonderful temps in the month of August. Just love the Pacific Northwest – but I’m more partial to further north – the further the better! [tup]

Take your time catching up, we’ll be here when you decide to chat again!

Feast or famine Rob these days (daze)! Work, work, work, rest, work, work, ,work, rest, etc. [swg] Good to have you back amongst us once again. Been somewhat of a drought, fer sure, fer sure! Anyway, since you, Ted and Nick are “staff” ‘round here – I would EXPECT to see you three without having to do cartwheels when you Post! [swg] After all, you guys (guyz) don’t seem to have a problem dipping into the tub upstairs in my private quarters for your remuneration! <grin>

That Second National Bank of Mentor Village has undergone a few changes since the “mob” moved in. Somehow, someway, before we realized it, Vito the Hit! and his Boyz wound up on the Board of Detesters Directors with Vito “elected” as President, CEO and HMWIC (head man what’s in charge!). They don’t give away toasters and the like when you open an account, rather they simply size you for some ‘shoes,’ which may or may not be worn at a later date! [swg] An interesting place, indeed. [%-)]

You may have hit on something regarding the Forums and the apparent slow down for some. Could be the number of people off from school during this period. However, I’ve not noticed any difference in loading – none. I do use my assorted software applications to ensure that my hard drive is squared away, scans done for this ‘n that to ensure no unwanted “visitors” reside in memory, purge cookies, history, and the like, along with ensuring my firewall and other protections are operating as advertised. These things, when done in synergy, keep things up ‘n runnin’ quite well.

Insofar as that “Dummies” book is concerned, I would think that if one were to retrieve the gobs and gobs of “stuff” put out on this thread by moi over the months, one would have a good start. But alas, old habits are hard to break. That’s the bugaboo as I see it. Unintended consequences of technology always seems to wind up with people using things they are ill prepared to understand. Happens. Just think of the zillions out there who still “fear” the features of a VCR, DVD or other such devices – and of course, the TV remote! [swg]

Well, the subject IS Classic Trains – so to one and all – enjoy these ENCORE! pieces, for unless one takes the time to peruse the old Index pages some of them may wind up simply being unread for ages.

Later!

For: rrandb

Not a good way to enter a site, my friend. Perhaps you should start at page one - check out what has been said. Then go the last 10 pages or so, read through them to get the gist of the way we operate 'round here.

Slowness on the Forums has more to do with the number of photographs and graphics being downloaded at the time one checks in along with whatever the condition of one's computer. Many variables - too many in fact for me to list.

At the time you checked in, this bar 'n grill was CLOSED. Sorry.

Hey Tom just came back in for a quick nite cap. No Boris not yours. <errggh> You let Vito be the head man at the bank? [:O] I wouldn't want to default on one of them there loans, no sir no concrete galoshes for me. I think that as long as these internal attp 5000 errors keep popping up I will keep to my already prepared stuff, hopefully the lag on the forum's due to the extra useage over the holidays. the only other time I have had this many problems with it was back in July when all the kids were rattling about the various Kalmbach forums.

I'm off to slumberland meeslf [zzz] a clod has taken root and has lessoned my sleep as of late [xx(]Do you have any suggestions for who to write sadi firums for dummies book [?] Certainly not this cat,I already have too much on my plate... maybe Leon hmmmm?

I'm out nite all

Evenin' Leon. Quiet this time of the night....... I'll take a double Absolute & grapefruit juice please, and
how about some $$ for Herr Wurlitzer. Lunatic Fringe (Red Rider), Benny & the Jets (Elton John),
Lazy (Deep Purple), Dream Weaver (Gary Wright) & Fly Like an Eagle (Steve Miller) are all old favorites of mine. Tom and Rob have come & gone while I was trying to catch up. I generally hang out with a pretty conservative crowd, as most of the patrons of Our Place seem to be. Being from and calling Oregon home, I know a "Tree Hugger" or two... Though I don't always see eye to eye with the "Environmental ***", as I Like call them. Anyway, they would be appalled at the growing pile of paper on my desk as I print out and try to play catch-up here...... Holy Smokes!!

Real quick though, for Pete, USNS stands for United States Naval Ship. That is how the ships of the Military Sealift Command (MSC) are designated. It's the logistics branch of the Navy.
We operate the unrep ships; oilers (tankers), fast combat support, ammunition, and the hospital ships, range instrumentation (missile tracking), etc.. Basically, any US Naval ship that isn't actually a combatant is operated by MSC. It keeps me off the streets and out of trouble most of the time. Very sorry for the VERY late reply.

Well, I just wanted to drop in and say hi. I hope to be fully caught up by tomorrow and able to contribute in some small though not comparatively knowledgeable way...

The tree and the train are nice touches to Our Place.

A late Merry Christmas and Happy New Year each of you.

Good Mornin' Rob!

Heard some rattling 'round down here and thought it was Leon closin' up. Nice to see ya again, Mate! [tup][tup] Happy to know that your Christmas turned out well - quiet isn't all that bad in my opinion [2c]. [swg]

Youve outdone yourself this time - quite a bit to mull over and I'd rather not save it up for later - ya know what happens then, eh [?] <grin> Leaving things to memory can be dangerous to one's self esteem. [;)]

Haven't a clue with regard to why you were prevented from viewing a couple of pages here on the thread. There are so many "different" twists to the way these Forums operate - perhaps someone will publish a "Forums for Dummies" book, for there are times I surely could use it! Best anyone can do is (1) recognize there is an issue and (2) deal with it - as you did. [tup]

Actually the interaction has been a bit more active than I had predicted, especially with the return of a couple of guys (BK - Russell and Dan) to make things a bit more interesting. However, I think we should maintain our ENCORE! approach for the remainder of the week - what's the harm [?} Some of those Posts are more than worthwhile for reproducing. Aside from the ones I have been Posing, you are the first to go with an ENCORE! - thanx for helping to maintain the "flow!" [tup][tup]

I concur that it's nice to see the "missing" again, however, when it comes to "hit 'n run" Posting - no thanx and not really welcome. Ain't goin' down that road again. If someone really wanted to communicate, there's also Email which in one particular case was totally blown off for months. Nah, I know when it's time to pull the plug - no reciprocity - no moi.

Thought you'd be pleased about Coal Scuttle and I'll send Boris over to the Second National Bank of Mentor Village when the open up today to exchange those Loonies for some U.S. quarters. I wonder what kind of "fee" Vito the Hit - Bank President, CEO and HMWIC (head man what's in charge) will apply to the exchange rate [?] Probably someone's first born. [swg] Thanx for the "investment." [tup]

So, you like that newspaper of ours, eh [?] As you may have noticed, I have asked - several times - for some articles for publication. Just a couple of paragraphs, and I'll do the rest. Takes quite a bit of thinking to put one of those issues together - something my aging grey matter seems to "fight" more and more these days (daze)! [swg] Just ship off an Email with something creative and I'll add it to the list of "things" for the next edition.

Not sure that Sunday is a good idea, especially given the very light turnout we get. Consider that we aren't even seeing "attaboys" anymore on Sunday - just the few who Post the Pix. So, the effort put into making up the Gazette might be better served with a during the week issue. Appreciate the input though - something I wi***he other guys would offer as well. [tup]

No joke, check out that flick I recommended - Narrow Margin (1990) - it's a thriller-diller and has some outstanding scenery and train shots, throughout. Well worth it! [tup]

Okay - time to resume what I was doing! [zzz]
