Had an amateur radio friend from north of the border ask about what sounded like a KCS loco he saw the other day.  Sign of the times...

That doesn't sound too surprising.  I've seen CP/KCS lashups from time to time on the ride home from work.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Doesn't surprise me, either, but they aren't used to seeing KCS in Smiths Falls, ON...

Voter #3.  But I did have to let the elections people into the building....

Stopped in around 10 AM to check on things.  They were quite busy.

Voted a week ago using special drop box. About two thirds of the counties in Cali have default 'mail in' voting - all registered voters in mine get a ballot about a month before voting day.

Today the local in-person voting location down the hill was very quiet. It has been snowing up in the Sierras (yay), not sure why anyone would choose in-person voting there.

We voted on Sunday.  Illinois provides for early voting at designated locations starting about three weeks before Election Day.  It makes it easier to get to a polling place and we've been doing it for several years.

Maryland had early voting this year as well as the had it in 2020.  I voted early in 2020 at one of the county's locations nearest me.  It took about a hour and a half to work my way through the line.  Voted at the regular Election Day site this year - walked in, was checked for my 'authenticy', got my ballot, made my choices and was walking out of the facility in less than 10 minutes total.

Electric still working in my Jacksonville condo with the near approach of TS Nicole.  Guessers say we will start getting Nicole's rain in Maryland some time tomorrow.

We have rain in the forecast.  It remains to be seen whether it's from Nicole, an approaching front, or a little of both.

Eye doctor was happy with how my eyes have turned out - don't have to see them for a year, now.

Mudchicken- I wish we belonged to a railroad forum with a functioning private message feature. I'm trying to figure out how to find a railroad contractor to build a spur off of a line in an industrial park in southeast South Dakota. If you want, you could email me. tnsvld@yahoo.com

-Thanks

Rain is definitely here - 0.41" at this moment, a few spells of almost a half inch per hour rain rate.

Based on the radar, there's plenty more coming...

Gonna be a wet one.  Up to 0.60" at 6:25 PM.

Edit:  Checked the actual rain guage (as opposed to the home weather station) at 11:30 PM:  1.72".  The weather station read 1.70".  Wet no matter how you cut it.

I had to fly from Detroit to Boston the other day and the weather was clear.  It was nice seeing East Deerfield and Selkirk Yards from the air.

Awful mid-air crash between a B-17 Flying Fortress and I think a P-63 Kingcobra at an airshow in Texas. :(

I don't recommend watching a video of it. Was very difficult to watch and I wish I hadn't, but the headline wasn't clear on what had happened.

While unconfirmed, there's no way anyone survived aboard either airframe. But hopefully nobody on the ground was seriously hurt.

I watched the video, the P-63 flew into the B-17 and cut it in half.  No-one could have survived in either airplane.  I hate to say anything but it looks like pure pilot error on the P-63 pilot's part, poor situational awareness.

Nasty collision.  Too low for anyone who survived the collision itself to have done anything in terms of bailing out.

We'll have to wait for the FAA and NTSB to deliver their findings, but I tend to agree it's on the P-63 pilot.

Final tally on rain was 2.22".  White stuff on tap for tomorrow.  A fellow checking in from northern Ontario on a ham radio net was reporting several inches...

Wondering if this will be the Gettysburg (railroad) of Air shows.

Very possible.  Saw a different angle, made it look like the P63 was in the process of 'overtaking' the B17 and flew into it at approximately the rear of the B17's wing/fuselage connection at about a 20 degree difference in heading.

I was having similar thoughts.

I wouldn't be too surprised if some new regs come out of this. This is the second fatal B-17 crash in recent years (though today's crash was not due to airworthiness of the B-17).

I would hate to think that would be the case.  The crash had nothing to do with the airworthiness of either the B-17 or the P-63, at least as far as we know with the P-63.  From what I could see from the video it was caused by pilot error on the P-63 pilot's part.

The B-17 crash in Connecticutt several years ago was also caused by pilot error, simply put after the failure of one engine the pilot was in too much of a rush to get it on the ground and misjudged his approach.  He needn't have hurried, a non-combat loaded B-17 can still fly easily on three engines.
