Looked like Csx crews were moving things into place at West Defiance.

Dropping parts in Deshler to replace the southwest transfer/wye.  Could make interesting watching when they swap the rails out.

The Onondaga Parkway railroad bridge, just north of Syracuse, claims another one:

https://www.syracuse.com/traffic/2022/10/crash-on-ny-370-lanes-leading-to-syracuse-closed.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=syracusedotcom_sf&fbclid=IwAR2_gDJiie7xxhPSmbIFiwiCE2FIWRnPrmkbbMXuSWQL2QIA9L4E_WIMIQs

This bridge carries the St Lawrence Sub.  Raising the rail line would be very expensive, and lowering the road is impossible as it's already in danger of flooding.  The road was built on a canal route.

There is more than adequate warning of the low clearance, but...

I like breakfast for supper from time to time.

I ran the mower over the leaves in the back yard the other day and was surprised to notice that I was actually cutting grass, even with the mower deck in the raised position.  With temperatures projected in the high 60's this weekend, the grass may still grow for a bit.

Checked out the snowblower the other day.  Started on the second pull, which is pretty impressive as it didn't get run all last winter.

The down side of all this warm weather is that it's keeping Lake Ontario warm, which may bode ill in terms of lake effect snow once it does finally get cold.

Nothing quite like 'lake effect' snow.  Was living in Akron area, late November or early December - a 33 or 34 degree rainy day in Akron - 48 inches of snow in the Heights area adjacent Lake Erie East of Cleveland.

Although northwest Indiana and western Michigan get a good enough amount of lake effect snow from Lake Michigan, I will concede that nothing quite compares to what western New York gets from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

There have been videos on-line showing the lake effect machine working at Buffalo.  Being a major population center, they get a lot of the attention when it hits.

Tug Hill is ground zero in my area - the perfect set-up for heavy snows.

As Balt notes, it can be a very tight system.  Check the weather radars (KTYX and KBUF) for western and northern NY when it's occurring.

I can be sitting in bright sunshine at my house - on the northern fringes of most lake effect snows, while 15-20 miles to the south it looks like someone drew a curtain.

VR and one of the weather sites sponsor a rail cam at Pulaski, NY, which can get some pretty serious snow.

Senior moment - set my wallet on the tonneau of my TR-7 before I went for a sunny afternoon drive.  Last I saw it.

Now I'm in the process of getting replacement credit cards and all the other ID cards that we need in the 21st Century.

No real problems except in trying to get a replacement Drivers License - I have not had a electronic account with the State MVA - they are sending me a PIN number by snail mail to permit me to create a account.

A couple years ago, I ditched my old wallet for one of those small metal ones.  It's amazing how many cards I used to carry, how few I carry now, and how little I needed to carry them.

I carry about 20 bucks in cash for emergencies but can't remember the last time I needed any. And coins? 3 coffee jars of them but no additions in years.

I go to my bank's ATM when I need cash - I'll withdraw $500 to $600 over the course of the year - I think I had about $45 in the wallet when it left the car + a $50 bill that I have been carrying for 'Emergencies' since I hit a nickel slot machine in Las Vegas back in 1984.

Depending on the when and where, I'll usually keep cash in the wallet.  How much depends...  I'm not one to charge a $1.29 candy bar on a card.

With the train show coming up this weekend, I'll get a little extra.  That actually helps the vendors, who must pay fees if they take cards.

A long time ago, a fellow in the place I worked was rumored to have $1,000 in his wallet at all times.

I keep some cash tucked away in the house, including rolled coins I've acquired over time.  Something I learned from dear old Mom.   Back when I was recovering from the broken ankle, I owed someone some money for something they had picked up for me.  Handily, they were headed to wash their vehicle, and I paid them with a roll of quarters...

Senior Moment Squared -

Took another survey of the Triumph before heading to the ATM for money and the DMV for license replacement - LOW AND BEHOLD - I FOUND THE WALLET.  In the footwell on the passenger side of the car.  RELIEF!!!!!!

Of course now I can't use any of the credit cards since I have gone through the 'lost card' procedures and all those account numbers have been canceled and invalidated for any purcahses after the time the cards were declared lost.

LOW AND BEHOLD - I FOUND THE WALLET.

Whilst I was in Colorado, I visited the Botanical Garden with my sister and her long-time best friend.  Felt for my wallet and - oops - it wasn't there.  And I was driving...

Turned out it had slipped out of my pants pocket while my pants were drooped over a chair in the room I was staying in...

(Cue sigh of relief...)

At least I hadn't started the "lost my wallet" procedure yet when I found it...

The demolition derby came to Denver yesterday morning after the second snow event of the year. Bridge over RTD's Osage Street light rail maintenance facility (Sixth Avenue) gathered up over 100 cars and small trucks in the morning commute. Bridge froze up and the humped nature of the bridge hid the the black ice "skating rink" pile-up from oncoming traffic. What a mess.

The finger-pointing has started and the tow-truck operators along with the body shops are getting a workout over the crumpled metal and destroyed car parts.

Can't speak to Denver's winter storm procedures.  In the metropolitan Baltimore/Washington area the highway 'Bubbas' have the roads pre-treated with a brine solution before the storm is predicted to begin.

About 15 years ago, before they started the procedure, I went about 30 miles from home for Christmas shopping.  Ambient temperature was about 30 degrees and while I was shopping it began to snow.  The first 15 miles or so weren't bad as the snow was just blowing around, the last 10 miles on the Interstate were glare ice - the smoothness of the driving portion was a skating rink - I began drivng on the shoulder, which was much rougher in road texture and thus had more grip.  Got off the Interstate at the first available exit and used the surface roads home.

Well, back home after the Syracuse train show.  They had a good turnout, and we talked to lots of people.

Bumper cars - with a military installation here we got a lot of folks for whom this is their first experience with snow, with predictable results.

Saw something on FB the other day that I've been saying for a while - those with four wheel drive like to say "but I've got four wheel drive," but they forget that they still only have four wheel stop, like everyone else.

With predictable results.

As Lynn found out some years ago, four wheel drive can be useful in deep snow but doesn't serve any useful purpose on glare ice.

Guessers said today is the warmest day until Spring 2023, so I took the Triumph out with the top down for a ride (top has been down since about 1990), vehicle only comes out in dry weather (warm and/or cold BUT dry).
