Got our first flurries for our part of the Chicago area yesterday. No accumulation of any sort, not even a dusting, but it was a reminder that winter is coming.
afternoon
Sunshine and snowsqualls this morning. The ND&W had the 2045 over in Woodburn Indiana.Checked out Ns in New Haven. They had a couple high hoods still working the yard. Also RJ corman was putting the equipment back on the trailers when I got there. Not sure what happened.I followed L 096 the ns local up to SDI in Butler. They pulled off in the siding at Spencer(ville) for a hot auto parts train that came south. They had to wait on CSX at St.Joe Indiana.I 010,M 351 and M 200 went east.I 010 had CSX 1776 on the point.Home now and the chilli is good.Back to work tomorrow.
stay safe

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
Took in a small train show today - I think I got more fire-related stuff than railroad. But did get to say hello to some friends. Not sure what I'm going to do with the switch target I got. It's small, but I don't necessarily have a place to show it. Needs some refinishing in the meantime.
No snow that I've seen here as yet, but with temperatures just above freezing this afternoon, it won't be long. I hit some sprinkles and a few showers going to and from the train show.
It's about time to take in the "regular" rain guage, before it gets water in it and freezes. The guage on the weather station is "tipping bucket," so it doesn't normally hold any water.

I'm planning on hitting the Iron Triangle tomorrow for a few hours. Maybe Deshler, Bellevue and Oak Harbor, also. Depends on how I feel...
As Paul Harvey said 'the rest of the story'. Thought I had lost my wallet on 11/3 and went through the process of reporting my credit cards as being lost later that afternoon. Discover is the card I use most, they FedEx'd the new card overnight and I had it before Noon on 11/4. The other cards that I reported came through 'normal' USPS channels - for whatever the reason they all arrived Saturday 11/12.
I found the wallet and it never was out of my control, even though I didn't know it at the time I reported all the cards as being lost.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Sorry Balt; but ..it happens.
As I get older, I try to make a habit of doing everything exactly the same. Wallet, keys and pocket knife go in the same pocket of every pair of pants when I put them on. They stay there until I change pants. My cellphone always goes in the same jacket pocket, etc, etc, etc.

I was taking my Triumph TR7 convertible out for a ride, remembered setting the wallet on the tonneau cover, but nothing else about the wallet. I found the wallet in the footwell of the passengers seat. There must have been a Swiss Cheese hole in my memory where I had brought the wallet off the tonneau and brought it inside the car.
Ns had shuffled some cars uptown today.Came home and took care of a few leaves next door.He has a bradford pear tree up front that still has some leaves.Leftover chilli for supper.

When I hand over my credit card at a restaurant or such, I make it a point to keep my wallet* on the table or in my hand until the card is returned. That's because my former habit of immediately putting my wallet back in my pocket resulted several times in my thinking I already had the card and therefore was good to go; only to have to call the place and then return to it to retrieve the card I'd left behind. So I have a new habit.
*are these still termed "billfolds" in places like Baltimore?
NKP guy... *are these still termed "billfolds" in places like Baltimore?
Maybe - but not by me.
I use wallet and billfold interchangeably but wallet most often.
Here are another couple of regional terms. We call soft drinks "pop" here in the upper Midwest but my wife is from California and calls it soda. I call it soda much of the time to keep her happy and also to get my siblings riled up. When we were dating, I sent her a Vermont Teddy Bear for Sweetest Day. She called me from LA and asked what it was for. She had never heard of Sweetest Day and then I found out it was a Midwestern thing. The last part is the best, though. Her sister was married to a guy from Toledo and gave him hell for knowing about Sweetest Day and never getting her anything.

Same here.
I was shopping in a small local grocery store on one of my visits back to the ol' hometown in Michigan when I looked up at the aisle markers and noticed that among the items to be found in that aisle was "Pop." I took a picture...
I'm not sure how current the usage is, but my ex, from New England, referred to such beverages as "tonic." And, of course, if you're in the southeast, I hear it's all "Coke..."

In parts of New Orleans they're called 'cold drinks'.

I asked my doctor if I gave up delicious food and all alcohol, would I live longer? He said, "No, but it will seem longer."
Ns sent a stack train west after work.Had some rain/snow mix on the way home.Need to update a couple things before we can send out Christmas cards this year.
tree68 I hear it's all "Coke..."
I've never heard it myself, but in Virginia and points south Coca-Cola was called "Southern Holy Water."
The W&LE was busy today. There were 5 units at Carey Yard, 2 at Hartland Yd, 1 with two CSX units at the huge grain elevator in Clarksfield and 4 working at Brighton. The Ashland Railway had to 2 units delivering a coil steel train to CSX at Willard.
First Polar Express trip in the books. Kind of a shakedown cruise, but minimal issues arose.
The trip home was another story. It was snowing when we got back to Utica, and coming down pretty good after I stopped for supper. Took an hour an a half for part of the trip that usually takes an hour...
Slush in the roads - you had to make sure you stayed in the track of the vehicles ahead of you.
OTOH, it's just flurries here right now. And the roads are just wet...
Inch and a quarter of rain since Noon. Snow further out West in the state.

The only "holy water" with which I'm familiar comes from Jalisco.

Then allow me to introduce you to the "holy water" that comes from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
Cheers!

Ns was running something on the main after work.Didn't see which way it was going.Ran errands.College boy said he would help with Turkey day cooking. We got most of what we needed today.Rain/snow mix and going to get really chilly for this weekend.
NWS Prognosticators suggesting we'll see upwards of two feet of the white stuff by the end of the weekend. So far, it's just what fell over the past day or so.
Right now it's staying to the south of us (and south of Buffalo, for the most part), but it's all supposed to be shifting north.
Anyone who subscribes to VR, check the Pulaski, NY cam from time to time. They'll be in the heart of it before long.
Snowblower is ready to go, and I'm headed out shortly to top off the gas can. Let 'er rip!
I did turn down working on the railroad this weekend, though. Not driving two hours through that you-know-what...

You are lucky you aren't on a PSR carrier - you could be FIRED for refusal to work.
Didn't hear anything on Ns after work today.Came home and put the outside lights out.Nothing too fancy. The Cleveland-Buffalo football game might be moved to Detroit last I heard. The boss said she wouldn't want that much snow.I just reminded her that she offered to help if we got snow.Glad we got the extra pillows on the couch.

Daytime's not bad. It's nighttime - less traffic and hard to see landmarks...
Not to mention looking like you're driving at warp speed...

It is being moved to Detroit - that way the Bills won't be stranded in Buffalo when they are scheduled to play in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day.
Weather guessers are saying six feet in Buffalo...
Did I already say that?
It does bear repeating...
No where near that forecast here, but I did pick up some fuel for the snowblower...
And the lake effect machine has definitely set up south of Buffalo at 3 AM.
We're getting a good dose here, too. Looks like the snowblower will get some exercise come dawn...
