Good evening everyone. What a beautiful day today! Sarah and I had a Girls Day Out. Enjoyed a late breakfast out, and then went shopping.
I've got the evening round of roast, taters, carrots, etc. on the warmer bar. So come on over, grab a plate and fill 'er up, and head outside to the patio.
Joe and Lance, have containers made up for you two, so you can take it to work tonight.
Everyone have a great evening!!

Good Monday morning, everyone. We've gotten a little bitty shower this morning. Didn't even know it was raining, until I stepped out on the front porch to see if the morning paper had shown up! Heard the rain hitting the awning over the porch, and looked out into the street. Then I noticed a tad bit of moisture on our front sidewalk, leading to the main sidewalk and the street. Interesting. Rain hadn't even been mentioned as a possiblity overnight.
Jay, so sad to hear about that family. Your town will be in our prayers.
Coffee is made fresh, along with oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple and apple juice freshly made this morning. Also have hot water for tea.
On the breakfast bar this morning: fresh cherries, pineapple chunks, cantaloupe & watermelon chunks, turkey bacon, sausage, sausage gravy w/homemade buttermilk biscuits, pancakes (regular and whole wheat), syrup, fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries, scrambled eggs.
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and also hope it was a good, restful weekend, for those who could relax.
Everyone have a good morning, and let me know if you have any meal requests for today.

Gah - what a weekend. I have a little something for just about everyone!
Driver had to work Sat and Sun mornings - so Sat - I was trackside at 5:30 am. But not before I went and inspected a fire going on about 9 blocks from the watch site. 86 year old huge, brick church was totally gutted in a 2 alarm fire. Started in the basement and went right straight up through the roof. I had to go over and find out what it was before I could settle in trackside. Told a coal train to wait for me, I would be right back. He did. I was.
Had a derailment just west of the watch site on Thursday nite - same pesky track we have talked about in the past. Put 4 loaded coal cars on the ground. I used my new bino-culars and found some panel track left over from repairs, some badly bent track, some ties with grooves in them, lots and lots of coal on the ground to be picked up and four empty coal gons sitting upright w/o their axels, which were sitting in a pile next to them.
Unlike Willy, I saw wall-to-wall trains - they were moving freight like mad in all directions. Saw my first 4 tarped cars of nuclear waste, I would assume. They were marked radioactive and heading west through the yard and probably out the other side toward Wyoming.
Also saw one freight train coming almost into the yard, stop and back all the way back out, try to come in on another track, back all the way out and then leave the entire train out on a siding north of town and bring just the engines into the yard. Suppose they were full at the inn?
And the usual moron that slid under the tank car, rather than go a few more feet and use the pedestrian tunnel......
MC - so glad you are enjoying our great state of confusion. Too bad you aren't a little closer or I would give you a birthday maul hug!
Jay - That's why the name of Delavan was so familiar. How sad.
Tree - had a whole weekend of stupid fires along with the big one. Stain your deck, put combustible rags in kitchen - burn down your new house.....
Joe - any skeeter bites?
Willy - nice weekend weather!
Randy - I used to ride on the doghouse......a lifetime ago.
CW - I am exhausted. Too much weekend and not enough hammock time. I am dragging the entire hammock out to the far corner of the garden.....Then I am going to button it shut with me in it.

mookie matts signing the aint no bugs on me jingle for you.the wind took care of them thursday night.yesterday i mowed and trimed and gave the resident rabbit more to chew on as i pushed the weeds back across the yard/woods line.we also had the usual moron try to go under the viaduct on friday.opened his truck up like a can of sardines.mookie better make sure you have a big enough peep hole.I'm getting your long straw for your coffee.

Those old churches are really hard to save - generally there is the delayed alarm (nobody there), lots of fire load (neatly spaced pews, wide open spaces with plenty of air), and they're old and well seasoned. Haven't seen one saved, yet.
You can bet the deck stainer won't do that again.
Another decent day on the railroad yesterday. More trainman training - this time with the ALCo and the trainmaster driving. Finding out all sorts of little things that aren't in the book, or obvious, but that are important, none-the-less. Still, I haven't hurt anyone or broken anything, both good things. I did get a cab ride out of it! We had plenty of crew, so everybody got a crack at everything. That's really nice for a couple of our conductors who were working as trainmen - they got to "play" a bit without the extra responsibilities of being conductor, too. That was left to the student conductor.....

....One would think a fire sensor and automatic alarm to the fire Co. would be the route to go for church buildings as mentioned above by Tree....Surely, that would give the fire co. a fighting chance to get on the problem much earlier.

A lot of them do have alarms that are connected to a "monitoring service" and/or to the
local fire department, but as Larry said, given age, construction, etc., within several
minutes, the entire building is gone, there's generally not enough time for any fire
department to respond.
(Larry, correct me on this, but don't the insurance companies and IFPA consider 3-4 minutes getting "on scene" a good response time?)
Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!
Since no one has given me any meal requests today, here are your choices for the lunch/dinner and dinner/supper menu:
From the Sunday Dinner leftovers, open-face roast beef sandwiches w/mashed taters and gravy, green beans and cole slaw; and Italian spaghetti/garlic Texas toast or your choice of garlic bread and garden salad.
Desserts today: cherry and strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, and apple and peach pies.
I hope everyone approves of today's menu, and also hope everyone enjoys eating whichever you decide to have.
S-ghetti! Yesssss.
Mutt - our FD response time (we are still considered small city) is about 3 min tops in most cases. They do a wonderful job in getting just about anywhere fast.
Someone said there was possibly a wedding or reception in the basement the night before. Wouldn't that just make you feel awful knowing you may have contributed in some way? There is a kitchen down there. That's the 2nd time a wedding reception burned down a building - that I know of - I attended the first one many years ago and the next morning all "evidence" was gone!
Too sad!
Tree - they have a new batallion chief - they broke him in last nite on the rag fire. He sounded like he was reading a recipe going through what all he wanted done and wanted to focus on. I have listened long enough I kept wanting to prompt him. The old chief(s) are pretty relaxed and I kept wanting to tell him to breathe! But he is clear and pretty concise altho a little mixed up on some things. He will be good to listen to when he feels more comfortable.
Back to my garlic bread.......Haaaaaaaaa.......
Well...it's a Monday, that's for sure.
I thought I'd stop in from combat (work-) to grab a Gatorade and then get back to swinging my big, heavy hammer. Seems as though today is start crap at work day and I'm now fully on the warpath. I'll be going now...lotta heads need smashing and the hammer and I have lots of swinging to do...

Yikes, I think I better go find a helmet to match my tin boots...
//stops in for more Gatorade and a towel
I don't think even tin will work. This is one big hammer and I've still got loads of energy...hehe...but it's getting better. I'm running out of targets!

Me and the BFH are back later...where'd that warpath go.....aha!

locomutt wrote:(Larry, correct me on this, but don't the insurance companies and IFPA consider 3-4 minutes getting "on scene" a good response time?)
Actually, IIRC, 3-4 minutes is pretty good - I'm thinking the standard is more in the 8 minute range. Not too many cities have a station every "8 minutes."
Ms Mook - That battalion chief sounds like our current student conductor. Almost too thorough. I threw him a curve yesterday, though. The SPAF requires recording the times that all mainline switches are thrown. Since I don't wear a wrist watch when I work (I carry a pocket watch - part of the 'look') and the pocket watch is under my hi-vis vest, it's really hard to dig out the time when I throw a switch. So, instead of calling the conductor with the switch position and time, I just report the switch position 'at your time.' It took him off his regular script (and he all but carries one), but his replies sounded a lot more relaxed. Threw him for a loop when I reported the switch "lined and locked normal." Might as well have fun.
CW thanks for supper tonight. matt and I were busy today doing chores.Going to go get cleaned up for the regular job tonight.

Finally done with the warpath. Sometimes you just need to kick a little you-know-what to get things done. I'll put the hammer back on the shelf as it's not my preferred method of dealing with certain situations. CW what's for dinner? I'm starved!
Well, Dan, and everyone else: I was planning on having open-face roast beef sandwiches w/mashed taters, gravy, etc., but it seems that that and the spaghetti were all cleaned up at lunch today. So. . . supper will be:
1. chicken drumsticks w/corn, green peas and mashed taters and
2. beef tips portobello w/gravy, mashed taters, and a veggie medley of broccoli, brussels sprouts and carrots
Joe and Lance, I made you two plates for work tonight, with a little bit of both the above choices, so you don't have to decide which you'd like.
My hammer's bigger--got a 425hp Cat motor connected to it......
Went out driving again today, took the truck through Grafton and up to Plymouth, WI. I don't like taking State Hy 57, though, too straight and boring, have to keep cycling through the mirrors to stay alert. Tomorrow night we do our night driving excercise, should be interesting......
Went to a truck and tractor pull over in Union Grove Saturday night, was some good action and carnage, like the gal who blew up both rear tires on her brand new 4wd pulling truck, and the gent who broke an axleshaft and pretzeled his rear driveshaft. Guess those parts don't like all that torque....
Will take some Italian for dinner, then some rest. See everyone later.......

Mook, I'm not sure exactly how large our "city" is, since they merged the city and county
governments about four years ago, they say(have said) that we are the 16th largest in
the U.S.A. Others have said (and our own) that we are the 26th.
Recently, there has been quite a "Row" with city fathers on either rebuilding, or replacing existing fire stations so that there is still a good response time.
That "Batallion Chief" sounds like he knows his job!!!
(He will get adjusted to the job.)
Now, I'll get back to the S-gehtti and Garlic Bread.

Well, I'm a bit unhappy! I had no idea that this past weekend, the Chinese QJ's were running on Iowa Interstate to Council Bluffs. I don't know how I didn't find out that they were coming, but I guess they've come and gone and I've totally missed out. I was looking through pictures on Railpictures.net and all of a sudden I'm seeing photos titled: "QJ's in Council Bluffs" and similar other titles. This is just really sad. I missed out on what could be my only chance to see them! Arrrgh.
If there is any light at the end of the tunnel, it's the fact that the UP 844 will be coming at the end of June, so at least I'll be able to see one steamer this summer. Of course the 844 isn't as unique as the QJs, but at least it is something.
Willy
